Downloading Issues / Save Or Open The File Message

Okay, i first noticed this issue when i was playing team fortress. Whenever you enter a server you'll be presented with a server message, which is a html page with-in the program (from my understanding). But when my computer is about to load the server message it minimizes and i get a message saying if i want to save or open the file, if i click open it will open in my browser and the in game window will be blank. Its happened to a few other programs as well, for instance when installing a program the eula will come up as a html doc within the installed and i have to scroll to accept, however it again asks me to open or save, if i open it will open in a browser.

The last place i noticed it was in outlook, whenever i get new mail, instead of doing the normal thing outlook does with mail it asks me if i want to save the file it's receiving. At first i thought my temp folder was full, cleaned it and i still get the issue. Its really limiting what i can do on my computer, could anyone help?

Downloading And Viewing A Pdf File

When i log into my utility provider web site to view my bill, internet explorer 8 opens a window and tries to down load the pdf file but just sits doing nothing. I have adobe reader 9 installed and if i try a different browser the pdf file is displayed correctly even with my anti virus active and i can print and save the file so the problem is obviously ie8. I have checked the settings etc but cannot see any thing obvious that is stopping the file from opening. Have tried shutting down my anti virus to see if this is affecting it but it has no effect.

Live File System Will Not Save File

Live file system will not save file!Windows 7 and udf will copy several files and then you get to the last file which is 700 meg and the space free bar under the dvd rw drive shows 1. 2 gig left. The copy starts and runs till about 350 meg left then it slows down all the way to 17 kbs and also till 10 k was left on the dvd. By this time about 5 hrs have gone by and the copy window has showed 1 hr left for 3 hrs. The cancel button won't work task manager when used will crash the system. You can force a shut down but then you have to reactivate norton with your purchase code. A search of the internet for me was no help at all.

Two Open / Save Dialogs

Windows 7 appears to have 2 different open/save dialog boxes. One simply has a few icons on the left (recent places, desktop, libraries, computer, network). The other has the complete file system, including favorites folders, on the left. Is there some reason there are 2 of these?  Is there any way to set windows to always use the more complete dialog box, or is this something hard-coded into the program i'm using at the time? If it's the latter, then i have a suggestion for sp1 - get rid of the limited dialog box so windows 7 will have a more useful and consistent interface.

Cannot Open Or Save Excel / Word Files From Internet

Recently i have not been able to open or save any excel or word files from any website or yahoo e-mail. When i click on the file i get a pop-up asking to save or open and i choose one then i see the file progress, then then nothing. The pop-up closes and no file, opened or saved.

In the past i've been able to open and save both excel and word files but now i can't. I was on the phone for an hour with hp support and they were of no help. They had me delete my cookies disable add-ins and reset ie8, none of that helped. Any ideas? Is this a ms office issue or ie issue?

Save As File Locations

Often when saving a file, a window pops up with several, what appear to be random, file locations listing where the file can be saved. Some of the locations are actually internet sights. I, always want to save the files to a folder on the hard drive of my computer, usually in the documents folder or a sub-folder. The list of available locations is getting longer and it's hard to find the documents folder in this list. How can i delete all the locations, especially the internet locations, and keep this drop down list manageable?

Unable To Save File To Remote Server

My site is hosted on a server with frontpage extensions installed. As such, i can edit my html files directly on the server, but also i have been able to open excel files that are located on the server, update them and then save them directly to the server itself. That was when i used windows xp.

Within windows xp i had added my site via 'my network places' and so could open the xls files within the 'open' dialogue box in excel (2007), click on 'my network places' and then double-click my site and login to view the xls files that i want to edit.

Since i have switched to windows 7, i find that i can no longer do this. I have added my site as a 'network location' in windows 7, but if i log into my site either via windows explorer or within excel, there are no files listed - it is just blank. I can open a file in excel if i type in the exact url address for it in the 'open' dialogue box, but when i try to save it, i find that i cannot save it to the server - the error message is "document not saved".

I really don't want to go back to windows xp, so is there a way to restore the functionality that i had in xp - editing and saving excel files to my server - within windows 7?

How Do I Open A File As A Zip File?

I work with an application that packages files into "zipped folders" (yeah, just zip files), but uses a different file extension. It works exactly like . Gadget (windows gadgets) and . Themepack (windows themes) files work: you can rename them to .zip and open them with the zip viewer.

I want to skip the step of renaming it each time. I want to just associate the files with the zip viewer. In fact i don't need to associate it, just open-with a single time: i know if i can do it once, it will always be an available option on the right-click context menu of the files.

But i can't find which program is associated with zip files. I tried searching the system-32 folder.

Unable To Re-open Live Mail After Sent Message

When i create an e-mail the message it can be sent, but the system then disconnects from the internet, and i am unable to re-open windows live from the task bar. To make windows live become active again, i am compelled to do a restart but must concurrently select f8. The taskbar then allows me to again select windows live e-mail. Have repeated this process several times but there must be a better solution to preclude the system from shutting down after each e-mail is sent.

Choosing A Program To Open A File

I was opening a file and right clicked to open the file, it was a picture file, and used the, "open with. " Command. I selected a program and left the check box below to have that program be the selected program for this kind of file, and all of my files from documents and other non-picture files changed to the particular program icon. All of the taskbar's pinned files/programs like control panel and the file library were all changed to be open by this particular program. It was the windows photo viewer.

I had to restore my computer in order to get it back to using the files in their normal programs. Even my files and programs on the start menu changed. I attempted to change one program back to its original state and left the box checked again, it then changed all my files and programs to this other program. How can i correct this problem so when i have a file i want to use with a certain program i can make that particular program the default but without changing all my other files and programs?

I know that the file is closed. Why am i getting this error and how can i get it to stop. It is taking me twice as long to complete a project file package as when i had xp.

Open File Security Warning

Whenever i boot up right after i log in, this open file security warning pops up, and also prevents my dell dock from loading. I have a 64 bit dell inspiron laptop, and have been dealing with this for the past 2 weeks after i have downloaded a video file transfer software, and have been graced with this security warning ever since. I even uninstalled the video software to see if it goes away. It says.

Open file security warning
Name: appdataroamingmicrosoftsvchost.exe
Publisher: unkown
Type: application
From: c:users(my name)appdataroamingmicrosoftsvchost.exe
Then gives me two options to run or cancel

And then it asks me by checking a little box if i want it to always ask before opening this file, but it opens this anyway every time i log into windows when it starts up. This is ridiculously annoying and i am on the verge of giving my one month old dell inspirion laptop to my dog as a chew toy and going out and buying a mac just so i wont have to deal with these ridiculous random security warnings that microsoft has plagued it's consumers with time after time with their operating systems. Can someone please help me before fido chews through the hard drive?

Cannot Open File C:recovery.dat

I have been trying to install windows 7 ultimate and when the installation is almost complete, where its about to take me to the desktop, i get a huge fat red error, and on the top of the screen it says can not open file c:recovery. Dat. It stays there and the only way i can turn off my laptop is if i unplug it and remove the battery, i have also tried going into safe mode with networking witch has had the same results ending with the error screen. What can i do to continue the final stages of installing windows 7 and get my laptop in working condition again?

My laptop is a asus notebook n50vn sn: 8bn0as09004045h

I have seen this on another thread but it doesnt work. My windows 7 ultimate is on a usb and cant be burnt onto a dvd. Try starting your computer in safe mode, follow these steps:

1. Restart your computer if it is powered on.
2. Tap the f8 key after your computer initially powers on.
3. Once you see the advanced boot options menu you can stop tapping.
4. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight your selection.
5. Select safe mode with networking and press enter.
6. You should see drivers loading, and then please wait.
7. You should then be at the welcome screen.
8. Logon to your computer using an account with administrator privileges.

Applications Crash When Go To File / Open

The issue started with office 2010. Go to file/open and the application crashes. Excel has stopped working, search online for a solution, or close the program. The issue has now expanded. I cannot attach a file to my email. App crashes. Same thing happens on file save as. I can open a file from explorer. Double click on a file and all is well. File/save works. The problem can be resolved by deleting the user, and re-creating it. But it does not take long for the problem to reappear. I have not been able to identify a specific activity that triggers the issue. Looking forward to a resolution.

Upgrade Adviser Error Message - Extracting File Field

I am trying to get windows 7 installed on my computer. I asked this question before and was told to do a clean boot which i did but that didn't help i still get the same error message. I am able to download other files. Why won't this one work right? Is there a another type of file that i can download to do the same thing? Do i have to use the window 7 upgrade adviser to upgrade to windows 7. This is all very frustrating!

Former question:

I am running windows vista. When i click 'run' to get the windows 7 download adviser to start i get an error message:

"Extracting file field: it is most likely caused by low memory (low disk space for swapping file or corrupted cabinet file. "

This is a new toshiba laptop i purchased in july. I don't have much on the computer so i can't possibly be low on memory. What's the deal? What do i do to get the upgrade adviser to work?

Error - Windows Can't Open This File

Windows can't open this file: in windows 7 with ie 8, when i click on an embedded link in an email, i get the message "windows can't open this file: and then there is a long file name is listed. "To open this file, windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it. Windows can go online to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs that are installed on your computer.

What do you want to do?" I then select "select a program from a list of installed programs" and use ie, and it works fine. Links within the link work. I select use this program but it doesn't matter, it always gives me this message. I did a system restore and did a ie reset, but i think this started after the most recent windows critical update.

Error - File Or Folder Open Or In Use By Another Program

I am using windows 7 64-bit on an asus laptop, and recently ran into a strange problem. I have a shared hard drive on a desktop pc that stores all of my working files. I often work from the laptop across my wireless network, working on files stored on my desktop hard drive. The desktop is running win xp professional.

When i try and move a folder on the desktop hard drive using the laptop running win 7 i am getting the error"file or folder open or in use by another program, please close the program and try again"
The files are not open on the desktop or elsewhere on the laptop either, but nothing i do seems to unlock these files so they can be managed remotely from the laptop across the wireless network.

I found one forum post that said something about having to unlock the permissions for the file in windows 7? Is this the problem? And if so, how would one go about doing that? I have checked the permissions of the folders themselves, and they are set to full read write access for everyone, so i don't know what i could possibly change. This is a very annoying glitch, having to go to my desktop every time i need to move or delete a file from my shared hard drive!

Also i have had no problems in the past w/ my previous two laptops managing files across my network on this particular desktop drive. Those were running win xp home and media center edition.
