Editing Drives That Are Saved By A System Image

How do i prevent windows from automatically adding a drive to a system image. I have a couple of external hard drives that i use with my laptop. One has a large number of files and programs(mainly games) that i use, but i do not need them to be backed up. The other i save all of my backups to. For some reason windows wants to make a system image of both the laptop's internal hard drive and the external drive with all of the games on it. I only need the internal hard drive backed up and i am wondering how do i tell windows to not create a system image of the external drive, or are there any files on the external drive that are causing windows to think it needs to backup the drive?

System Image Reports Two Boot Drives To Image

I have a sata (boot drive) and an ide drive in my win 7 pro 64 bit machine. Is there any way to remove the old boot partition on my ide from the list of drives to image w/ sys image? I can understand the c: part (sata/boot) and the "system reserved" but i don't want to image the d: part (1st part on old ide xp pro boot drive that has 84gb on it that i don't want to bkup). Funny thing is that the ide drive doesn't even show up on the boot sequence in bios. I really don't want to reformat in case something happens to my new sys i can still run xp on my old one (i lost my xp install disk).

I just want to leave it out of the sys image list. Theres no way to remove it from the list without reformatting the d: part. (Old boot drive)? Can i possibly make the d: part. Non bootable without running the xp installation on it and make it bootable again later?Maybeny help removing it from the list would be greatly appreciated!

System Image Recovery Can't Find System Image

I am trying to restore a backup system image to my repaired pc. It is wiped clean. I have the "repair disc windows 7 64 bit" that i created in windows 7. Using windows 7 backup i have a system image backup on an external wd essentials 1tb usb hard drive. I insert the repair disc and start the system. Get to system recovery options. I have the external hard disk with the system backup image connected. Select system image recovery option. Says "windows cannot find a system image on this computer. Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final dvd from a backup set and click retry. Alternatively, close this dialog for more options.

Retry gives me the same message. Tried starting with drive attached, not attached, same result. Click cancel. Next option selected is "select a system image. " No system image listed. Hit refresh, still nothing. Top of screen says "click advanced to add a network location or install a driver for a backup device if it does not show up in the list below. "  I click on the advanced tab.

Option to "search for a system image on the network" or "install a driver. " I select install a driver. Find the right driver for the wd essential hard drive (disk.sys and partmgr.sys) and when i click on them i get "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. "  Click ok. Can't find how to load these drivers i am being asked for. Funny thing is that on the screen where i search for driver i can see the wd essential hard drive connected to the system. I can also see the system image files but when i click on them i get the same error message, "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware. "

Failed System Image

I'm attempting to use the windows 7 back up and restore feature and get an error message during the creation of the system image:

Windows backup encountered and error when accessing the remote shared folder. (0x8078015b)

     Additional information:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. (0x80070079)

A backup without the system image works fine.

Restore From System Image

I have a hard disk with two partitions, one for my windows 7 installation and one for my media files. I want to make a system image of my windows partition only using the backup and restore feature in windows 7 (a backup of the files on the media partition would require more space than i currently have).

If i create a system image of the windows partition only and use it to restore to the the same hard disk that windows is currently installed on (which also contains a partition with my media files), will i lose the files on the media partition?

System Image Recovery Stops

I had to send my laptop in for an rma, so i made a system image of my drives using the windows 7 backup utility. I have a single 250gb hard drive which is partitioned into two different drives. My c: had mostly windows 7 files and some programs while my d: had game installations and was used for general storage. When i received the laptop back (they just had to replace my dvd drive), i noticed they reformatted my hard drive and threw windows vista back on the thing, but the partitions still looked to be the same as before.

My system images were stored on a 1tb external drive, so i booted off of a windows 7 recovery cd and attempted to restore the c: and d: drives. After 13 minutes in the progress bar reaches about 1/3 of the way in. The hard drive activity light switches from always on to just flickering every couple seconds and no more progress is made. I've given it over an hour just sitting at this spot, but no matter how much time is given, the restore does not progress.

I've tried changing different options in the restore utility (only restoring one drive, formatting the drives to match the images and not), but no matter what i do, i get the same problem. I've also tried running the system image recovery from a windows 7 disk and from within windows 7 after a clean install. Does anyone have any suggestions? When i made the system image, i was told it was successful.

Create System Image Failed

Upgraded windows 7 home premium to ultimate using anytime upgrade. Tried to create system image on a second hard drive, and it failed with a message about not having enough disk space on the destination drive. Before starting the backup, i got a message that about 27gb would be needed. There is over 100gb of free space on the second hard drive. Tried again, this time saving to my networked shared drive, also with over 100gb free space. Same failure message. The system c: drive shows 52. 1gb free of 74. 4gb

Unable To Create The System Image

I have two acer slimline towers. One almost one year, the other just two weeks. I thought that finally i shoud create a system image. So far i was lucky and haven't lost anything but after the purchase of the second acer i became a little more concerned.

I purchased iomega 1tb external drive ntfs and tried to create the system image. On the older comp. I receive a message that the harddrive has not enough free space for creating the system image. The 1tb drive is empty. The newer comp. Will not even let me go to the same point. It tells me that "windows 7 backup stopped working". The next message gives me a choice to cancel or debug but nothing happens anyway. From reading several non-microsoft forums i assume that this is a serious problem and my concern is who will give me new windows if i loose the content of one or both of my computers when there is no longer hard copy of windows supplied. One comp is 32bit, the other is 64bit. Both have w& professional upgrade.

If i may add another question, the newer comp, the 64bit doesn't shut off properly. It takes 4 minutes at least. The older one with much more stuff in it shuts off immediately. I tried to stop services and startup programs but it doesn't help.

I am trying to install a larger hard drive on my system and i want to use my burned system image on the new hard drive. My old hard drive is 150gb and the new drive is 500 gb. After using the system recovery mode to install the burned image on the new drive, this drive shows up as being 150 gb rather than 500 gb. I did not see any instructions on formatting the new drive before burning the image. I need help with rectifying this situation as i would like to have access to all 500 gb. I am running windows 7.

Problem Generating System Image Into Dvd+r

Try this :

Open services (click start and type in services. Msc) and scroll down to see if there is a " windows backup " service currently. If the service is present, you can try this before trying to repair (which i do not think will be succesful!)

Backup your whole registry before you try this

1) click start and type in regedit
2) click on hkey_local_machine
3) click on system and look for folders (i.e. Keys) named controlset. There is more than one.
4) look in each of the controlset - services folders for the "wbengine" folder. You may be missing "wbengine" in one or all of the folders but should have at least one folder with wbengine in there. You must get "wbengine" in all of the controlset folders including currentcontrolset. You cannot copy and paste keys in regedit

.
5) once you find a wbengine folder. Right-click on the folder and click export.
6) save the export file as wbenginefix. Reg to your desktop, or somewhere convenient.
7) go to your desktop and right-click on the file and click edit. The file will open in notepad.
8) look at the key location directly below "windows registry editor version 5. 00"
It should say:
[Hkey_local_machinesystemcontrolset001servicesw bengine]

9) in notepad, adjust the key location name to match the controlset folders with the missing wbengine folder (i.e.controlset, controlset001, controlset002, etc).
10) click save as and name the file wbengine1. Reg (or anything you want). Remember to type . Reg at the end or else it will save as a .txt file.
11) double click on the wbengine1. Reg file you just created and click ok to continue. You should get a message that the registry was successfully updated.
12) repeat step 7-11 for each controlset folder you have.
13) after all controlset folders are updated open regedit and confirm the wbengine is in all of the controlset folders.
14) restart, or logoff and on, and see if you have been succesful.

Hope it helped
Azeez nadeem - microsoft supporthi azeez , i have just purchased a dell inspiron with win 7 last week . While i was going to create system image on dvd+r the first day this computer was received , it kept on pop-up a box with message "label and insert a blank media bigger than 1gb . Please write the following label on blank media and insert it into e:" using the same disc number "1" despite numerous disc were inserted. This is exactly the same situation what tlee2microsoft had encountered, excepted that i don't need to power-down to cancel backup process.
After read through your solution above, "wbengine" file may be missing in some controlset folders. If i am not mistaken from step 13 , you want to make sure that "wbengine" is in all of the controlset folders. However , i find out that all my controlset folders " (ie controlset001 , controlset002 & currentcontrolset) already have "wbengine" file in it (with correct key location name matching the controlset folder). This mean that i am supposed to create system image to dvds with current registry of my computer , should your solution works .

Please advise if there is another solution . Or it is like what tlee2microsoft have mentioned :" according to the tutorials, my only options using the backup scheduler to create a system image are: a separate disc partition or a separate internal (or external) hard drive. It will not let me create a "system image" to a _set) of dvds using the backup scheduler. "

System Image & Backup Extremely Slow

I started running windows 7 backup, including a system image 2 days ago. It's only up to 17% completed now. I am running windows 7 professional, 64bit. The internal hd is 2 tb, 8 gb ram & amd phenom ii x3 processor, 2. 5 ghz. I am backing up to a firewire seagate free agent external hd. The mainboard is msi 770-c45. I have set the power option to never turn off the monitor or hd. I have tried other imaging software such as shadowprotect and rebit.

When i run those 2 together i get bsod's. Since the system image and backup features are in windows 7, i thought this might be a better way to make a disk image and backup since they are integrated into the os. But at this rate, the system image and backup may never complete. Any suggestions?
Oh one more piece of information. The c drive that i am attempting to backup has 686gb of used space.

Note: when i had windows xp with about the same amount of used disk space and used shadowprotect or acronis true image, the disk image would complete overnight. This is a new computer so there's no issue of upgrading from xp.

Using System Image To Restore Programs After Upgrade From 32 To 64-bit

Can i use windows system image to restore my programs after upgrade from windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit? I have read through a fair amount of the forum but can't seem to find a straight answer on this. I may be naive but i am looking at upgrading my 7 ultimate 32 bit to the 64 bit version and want to know if i can use the system image utility in windows back up to restore all my programs and files after the custom install necessary to get to 64bit. I don't have a lot of my serial numbers etc for programs i have purchased and it will be a hassle to get everything back on there.

Driver Update Via System Image Recovery Problem

Driver update via system image recovery. Not enough disk-space on "virtual"x: drive. Trying to upgrade my computer with windows 7. The following problem occurs. After trying to reboot, the screen says starting services. The screen flickers and a message appears with windows 7 encountered and unexpected problem. After that the system hangs. After googling, i've figured that the ati driver is the problem.

I wanted to repair this with system image recovery, using the driver install option says there isn't a system image yet. I can load a file and try to install this driver but a message appears with not enough disk space. When going to the explorer (still in system image recovery) i see a new disk x: with only about 38 mb disk space and about 2 mb free.

System Image Restore When Size Of C: Drive Changed

I have so far have had great success in restoring from system image (as opposed from system restore) for my windows 7 ultimate x64. Some small clarifications:1. On day 1, i make a system image of c: os (windows 7 ultimate) and system reserved partition (100mb). Say on that day, the c: was 100 gb in total size. 2. On any day after that, i modify the c: partition size to something different from 100gb. This could be because i am reinstalling windows 7 and thought to change the partition size or want to change the partition sizes or any other reason. Say, the c: is now 90gb or 110 gb or whatever, but not 100gb which it was on the day i made the system image.

Suppose, i am not happy with the result or feel the need to abort this install, and go back to my system image. 3. Will system image restore now work, considering that the c: is no longer the same size as on the day the image was made?4. Finally, windows 7 makes a system image called 'windowsimagebackup' or something. Do subsequent imaging overwrite this completely if i choose the same external hard drive i made the first image from.

Second, i have seen that if i change the name of the image say to 'windowsimagebackup290510', windows system repair disk no longer recognizes it. What is the way out. I basically want one partition with different system images say 'windowsimagebackup290510', 'win. Backup050610' and so on. But windows 7 restoring has failed for me when i rename the image file?

Backup Create System Image On External / Network Drive

I am running windows 7 home premium 64bit and i have 2 internal hdds plus a networked windows home server. When i go to backup and select create system image i am only shown the option of backing up the system drive (c drive) and not the other hdd (d drive). And as destination for the backup of the system drive i am presented with no option other than the d drive. I am not shown the option of an external drive or the whs network drive. Apparently the option of an external or network drive should be available as long as they are ntfs formatted.could it be that these options are not available for the home premium edition?

Creating System Image On External Usb Hard Drive

Creating a system image on an external usb 2. 0 hard drive
Applies to: windows | windows 7 | system repair and recovery

We have a new hp g60-533cl notebook running windows 7 64-bit home premium. Attached to it is a new hp usb 2. 0, 500 gb pocket media drive (pmd). I use windows 7 to create a system image of the laptop's hard disk(s) onto the pmd. In the windows 7, create a system image dialog box you see the following selected drives:

Drive used space

System (system) 33. 66 mb
(C:) (system) 40. 76 gb
Recovery (d:) (system) 9. 87 gb

Space required to save a backup of the selected drives: 50. 66 gb

I watch the winodws 7 progress thermometer as it creates the image for these drives, and you see that all 3 drives are "imaged" to the pmd. Once the process has successfully completed, the pmd has a folder on it titled, "windowsimagebackup".

I then right-click on this folder and select properties. It provides me with the following information.

Location: f:
Size: 33. 9 gb (36, 501, 698, 638 bytes)
Size on disk: 33. 9 gb (36, 501, 749, 760 bytes)
Contains: 21 files, 4 folders

My question: why are there only 33. 9 gb of information saved to the image, when the 3 drives listed above required 50. 66 gb of space? Is all of the information listed above actually being saved? What's happening ?

How To Block System Access To Hard Drives?

Basically, i want to block windows from accessing a certain drive, my macintosh drive (e: drive).

I'm using a macbook, running the latest version of os x snow leopard, i dual boot windows 7 ultimate, and access my mac drives with macdrive8. Whenever i'm running windows 7, certain applications will write a folder/file onto my macintosh partition, thinking it's a normal partition, thus corrupting my macintosh partition. I basically want to block anything on windows (including the os itself) from writing to it. Is there any way to do this? Seriously, i'll try anything.

Fix Separate System And Boot Hard Drives

I recently purchased and installed a new hd for my system that was running windows 7. I had purchased the windows 7 digital download installer so i have no install/repair cds to work with. My goal is to replace the old hd with the new one such that the new hd serves as both the system and the boot drive and if i want to i can either remove the old hard drive entirely or wipe it and use it for back up storage.

After installing and formatting the new hd i performed a custom installation of windows 7 using my downloaded installer and selected the new drive as the drive to install windows. After the installation completed i checked the disk management and the old drive (c:) is designated as the system drive and the new drive (z:) is the boot drive. As it currently stands if i unplug the old drive (c:) the attempt to turn the system on it tries to boot from the cd (which i don't have) and windows 7 won't start.

Further it appears that both drives now have windows 7 installed and if i have both plugged in, upon startup it asks what software i would like to run "windows 7" or "windows 7, " after a 20 second countdown it starts up normally. This is more of an annoyance than a show stopper because it adds about 20 seconds every time i start the system.

Any ideas on how to fix the issue? I will try reinstalling windows 7. If that doesn't work my next thought is to burn the digital installer to a cd, unplug the old drive and when it prompts to load from cd to try the burned disk.

Keep Win 7 System From Touching Usb Flash Drives

How do i keep windows 7 system from touching my usb flash drives when i use them? When i plug in a usb flash drive, i don't want any recyle bin or other hidden directories. I don't want any indexing progress bar. I just want my flash drive to be left alone so i can do what i want without any windows side effects, such traffic with the usb drive when i want to remove them.

Also i use truecrypt on some of my flash drives, not for encryption, but because i can get multi-cpu i/o. So i want these treated as described above when i mount them. How do i do that?

Editing Registry Administrator Rights

I have a java program which needs to edit registry at hkey_current_user. It is able to execute regedit when run from a standard user account but when i run the very same program from an account having administrative privileges, i get the error saying the "regedit needs elevated privileges".

This is mind boggling as a standard user is able to run regedit without a prompt where as an administrator needs elevated permissions ?

Is there any way i can edit hkey_current_user registry values from an account having administrator privilages without having to "elevate" the privileges of this account.

Start Up Programs Editing Tool

In vista, windows defender included an editor for programs that run on system start up. When i upgraded to 7 i remember that on the defenders' help section there was a topic about ditching the editor and it gave me a hint about an alternate program i could download. That was from a microsoft site but it was a semi official tool . Fter i installed it i clipped it to the task bar and although i used it quite often i never got it's name. I know it's on my pc but i can't find it thanks to an idiot pc technician who deleted my account and all it's info. I've searched every single program file single handed with no results. So now i'm bustin my head to remember the programs name. Can any 1 help me. ?

Excel Visual Basic / Macro Editing

Ok, well heres the deal: i want to setup a macro that will change a cell's fill color based on the cell's value. So if its above 50, lets make it green, and if its below, lets make it red. This is in excel here is the code:

-The code starts here -

Sub colorfillfromvalue()
'
' colordesign macro
''
With selection. Interior

If (activecell. Formular1c1 >= "50") then
. Pattern = xlsolid
. Patterncolorindex = xlautomatic
.color = 5287936
. Tintandshade = 0
. Patterntintandshade = 0
End if
If (activecell. Formular1c1 < "50") then
. Pattern = xlsolid
. Patterncolorindex = xlautomatic
.color = 255
. Tintandshade = 0
. Patterntintandshade = 0
End if
End with
End sub

-The code ends here-

A) the fields are limited to double digit numbers. 100 and beyond, 9 and below are all coming out as red.

B) the macro only works for one cell at a time, how can i edit it so a large selection treats all cells separately?
