Usb Flash Drive - Usb Device Is Not Recognized

I have tried 4 different usb flash drives from different manufacturers and my usb hard drive from western digital. Windows 7 recognizes it until i start transferring files. Then it can't find the drive. When i unplug it and plug it back in, i get a notification that the usb device is not recognized. After i restart the computer, it does the same thing all over again. I ran vista before windows 7 and never had this problem. I am very frustrated. I must have access to my flash & external drives or windows 7 is useless to me.

Usb Flash Drive Problem

I have windows 7 on a dell inspiron 1525 (originally came with vista). Every time i use my flash drive to read or play files, or even just view files on windows explorer, it freezes up. The only way to fix it is to unplug it and wait, otherwise it will just sit there with a blank white screen. This never happened on my xp desktop. But what i wanted to do was back up my system. It seems to work until it reaches 25%.

That's when it freezes again. This also happens with a blank cd. The only external memory (besides an external hdd [i never tried that]) that works is a sd card. I don't have a high enough memory card so i'm stuck. I need something to back my system on.

Can't Erase From The Usb Flash Drive

I attempted to install a chrome os(portable) on to my 8gb flash drive, but it didn't work. But i can't erase it from the flash drive now because windows vista recognizes it as a unformatted drive and now reads as 720mb. I did not try to format the drive because i don't know if it will do further damage.

The software i used to install the .img file is win32diskimager (https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download), i used this software along with power iso all the time so i figured i knew how to install something from a flash drive i was wrong, the only thing i can possibly think of is a software program to decipher the type of .img it is and delete it.

Unable Eject Usb Flash Drive

I've recently installed windows 7 on my system and since then i am having problem in ejecting my usb devices. When ever i click on eject the pop-up notification in the system tray says "your hardware can be removed safely" but the light on the flash drive still keeps blinking and i can still access the drive. Even if i repeat the process of clicking on safely remove hardware at various location(system tray, devices and printers, my computer. ) I am still able to access the device despite the message "you can safely remove the hardware)

My flash drive has even produced bad sectors because of unplugging the device ignoring this.

Readyboost On 16gb Usb Flash Drive

Windows recommends reserving 15. 125 gb for ready boost on a 16 gb usb flash drive, but if i set it to that capacity the drive usage indicator turns from blue to red. Even though the stripe turns red it still shows a small amount of space available on the drive, but only around 570 mb. Should i ignore this red stripe or dial back the reserved space for ready boost? If i dedicate the entire device to ready boost it also turns red.

Will ready boost still function properly if the indicator is red when dedicated entirely to ready boost?

Autoplay Not Working For Usb Flash Drive

Auto-play works smoothly on my windows 7 pro 64 bit installation with one exception. For some reason, it will not initiate with my usb drive (formatted fat32). The drive shows up in explorer just fine. I have already gone into the control panel for autoplay, and changed just about every setting imaginable, to no avail.

This is not a huge deal, except that it would be nice for this device to have the same behavior as other autoplay type devices. Oh, by the way, autoplay works just fine with this usb thumb drive on my notebook.

Usb Flash Drive Hidden In Explorer

I can see my f: drive in my admin account; but when i switch to mys daily user account -  any usb flash drive plugged in is invisible - if i manually type f: into the path box - it lists the drive contents just fine.

I've used admin, comp management, disks and the drive shows up as f: without any problems, if i re-name it to x: it then shows up in explorer; but swap it for another usb flash drive and its again invisible. Switch to admin account and its plainly visible. I had a look with tune-up utilities and the 'customizable drive displays' option for f: is ticked. I can hide and display other drives this way; but f: never appears.

Note i have a card reader, so drives g: h: k: are also always visible; dvd drive is e: and i have 2 hard drives c: & d: plus a hidden recovery drive, i can rename that to x: and it shows and hides - but still no f: drive. Where is the 'display / hide drives' option in win 7. I used to be able to do this in tweak ui on xp; biy do we miss that utility.

Usb Flash Drive Device Not Working

I have about 3-4 flash drives. 2 from kingston and 2 from transcend. I'm having trouble using the 4 gb transcend flash drive and 32 gb kingston flash drive. Scenario 1> the transcend pen-drive: the device is not recognized after i plug it in and when i go to open it from start>computer  it gives me error message"please insert a disk into the removable disk. "

Troubleshooting done:

1> change the drive letter from disk management wizard(start> right click on computer>manage).

2> checked for usbstor value(3).

3> checked on numerous computers(xp, vista, windows 7)

4> deleting usb root hubs and controllers and allowing windows to re-install them.

5> updated bios. Scenario 2> with the 32gb kingston flash drive.

Unlike the transcend pendrive, this seems to behave very strangely. The problem arises after i tried to format the drive. Though data can be copied, it cannot be viewed. (Be it any files music, video, documents)troubleshooting done: same as the previous one.

Installing Win 7 To A Usb Flash Drive

I own an asus eee and i have been wanting to install windows 7 ultimate onto it for a while now. Unfortunately the hard drive only has around 3. 7 gb of memory in it. I was wondering if i could possibly install it to an 8 gb usb flash drive instead. Earlier today i was trying to figure out why the usb drive wasn't on the list of locations to install to, and in my desperation i accidentally formatted my entire hdd, rendering the laptop useless unless i can install an os onto it. I have tried google-ing and it constantly keeps displaying how to install from a usb flash drive. I just want to install windows 7 onto my lappy toppy without buying any extra hardware.

Usb Flash Drive Works With Xp But Not With Win 7

I am having a problem only with an ocz rally2 512mb usb flash drive in my desktop machine (all of my other flash drives work fine). This flash drive works in winxp 32bit but not in windows 7 32-bit on same pc. This flash drive also works on windows 7 32bit on my laptop. When i plug this flash drive in with windows 7 running, the drive is given an unique drive letter but i can not access the contents. I have upgraded my chipset and deleted all of the usb drives in the device manager but after rebooting this drive still does not work.

Usb Hard Drive Does Not Appear In My Computer

I have an ads tech external hard drive that allows one to put any regular hd in the case and connect it to the pc via usb. My 2-week-old machine has windows7 running. After successfully accessing and removing all data on a hd using the usb external, i removed it from the computer, and placed another hd inside the usb case. Upon reconnecting, win7 recognizes that a usb device is being connected.

Windows also lists the device in the device manager and it is listed under devices and printers (from the control panel). Upon attempting to troubleshoot the device, i'm told that no problem can be identified. After rebooting with the device attached and unattached, it still does not appear in the list of hard drives in my computer.

Usb Flash Drive Write Protected Message

Usb Flash Drive Write Protected Problem

I have a usb flash drive that will not initialize in disk management because it is being reported as write protected. There are no switches or etc on the key. It is an older 512 gb lexar key. I tried the hkey_local_machinesystemcurrentcontrolsetcontrol storagedevicepolicies" - dword "writeprotect" set to '0' regedit solution i see some people mention. It didn't help. I'm not sure if this really applies to windows 7.

Usb Flash Drive Drivers Wont Install

I have a dti8gb flash drive stick that would work fine with vista, but when i plugged it into my upgraded windows 7 system build 7100 it has an error and states that "windows found software for your device, but an error occurred and could not install it" (something like that) and to contact the manufacturer. Its plug and play so there are no drivers on the kingston website for any systems beyond win98.

I have tried: to update drivers search for them manually within the system32 folder under drivers file repository (it finds it but cant install it). It is a plug and play device so it would work off the mass storage device i assume but i have tried to update those drivers also to no avail.

The only place in my system that it shows up is in the device manager, i hear the sound that a device has been inserted but it doesn't show up in my computer so i wasn't able to try a reformat.

I have also tried other usb ports and all my other devices work in all of the other ports.could there be a conflict in the system preventing the installation? Not sure what is different from vista to windows 7 but am i unable to find a solution online either.

I need the files ans settings but since they are 7 gb i don't know of any other way to get them into the computer if i can't read the flash drive.

Slow Transfer Speed To Usb 2.0 Flash Drive

I know that this topic has appeared once or twice in these forums but there haven't been any resolutions and they've been quiet lately so i started a new one. Recently, i migrated from windows xp to 7 and found this problem. When i try to copy a file (a 1. 2gb video) to a usb flash drive that i know is usb 2. 0 hi-speed (copying files to it in xp were really fast) it takes over 2 minutes. 7 reports that it is copying at 3-4 mb/sec. When i copy from the flash drive to my computer it copies at about 9-10mb/sec.

I've also tried plugging it into the rear ports but that doesn't change the transfer speed at all. I know it isn't something related to the flash stick itself because transferring files to it in xp were a lot faster. Some random information: transferring files from one hard drive to another averages at about 60mb/sec (both of the hard drives are sata ii drives).

I'm not sure what speed it should be but it doesn't feel drastically slower than on my xp machine. Windows 7 and my device drivers are all up-to-date.system specs:dell optiplex gx620 pentium 4 3. 2ghz2 gb ram windows 7 professional 32-bit avg 9 free edition anti-virus my setup is almost identical to how it was on my windows xp machine except i have less programs installed so there isn't something new that could have caused problems.

Usb Flash Drive Detected / Working But Not Display In Pc

I am running windows 7 professional. Any usb storage drive i connect to my laptop is not displayed in computer. It is assigned a legitimate drive letter and i can access the drive's contents by typing in the drive letter in the navigation bar or in run. I have verified this using the disk management utility. File operations on the drive work perfectly fine. The only issue here is that the drive is not shown or is hidden in computer. I have set folder options to show everything, ie. Any option to hide anything has been unchecked.

Additionally, when clicking the safely remove hardware icon in the tray, the device is listed as ". " Instead of the actual device name and drive letter. Note that there is one user account which is my administrator account. Interestingly, i created a new standard user account and was able to see the usb drive in computer when logged in to that account. Is there any setting i can change on my admin account to enable this? I would prefer not to have to create a new account and reconfigure all my settings.

Formatting Usb Flash Drive To Ntfs Causes A Red Bar

Reformatting usb flash drive to ntfs causes a red bar when used with readyboost vs. Blue bar in fat32, and hdd shows blue bar with ntfs. Is this a problem? Reformatting a usb flash drive to ntfs file sys allows full usage of flash drive storage cap. In readyboost but shows as a red bar in my computer while my hdd. Is also in ntfs shows blue. Flash drives formatted in fat32 also show blue. Does the red bar mean that that flash drive isn't compatible? Or is not working in windows7 64 bit?

Usb Devices - Flash / Hard Drive Causing Bsod

I am completely stumped as to why my flash drive (verbatim 16 gb) and my external hard drive both seem to be causing windows 7 to crash. At first, it only seemed to happen when i tried to save a word file to the flash drive (so i thought it was an issue with that device) - but when i tried to transfer files to my external hard drive, i got another bsod. Oddly, i have no trouble opening and saving to a onenote notebook file on the flash drive - but i don't know what that means.

Usb Flash Drive Driver Install Failed / Not Recognized

I plugged in a flash drive to my laptop the other day and i got the plug and play message, it downloaded the driver but the installation failed. Now windows 7 will not even recognize that the flash drive is plugged in or try to install the driver again. The flash drive still works on my main computer just fine and other usb devices including other flash drivers work just fine on this laptop. Device manager and computer management under administrative tools do not register it as being plugged in either.

I could not find a way to check if maybe the driver did install and was corrupted. Is there anything i can do?

Usb Flash Drive Error - Volume Does Not Contain Recognized File System

I plugged in my usb flash drive into a computer using windows 7. It always prompts me to scan and fix or cancel. I canceled every time, but i got annoyed with it popping up every time, so i told it to scan and fix. A loading screen came up so i patiently waited. After completion it asks to format my usb flash drive. I can't format it though because i have homework files and all my other personal files on there. So i canceled the format, but every time i plug it into my computer it asks t format it. I even plugged it into a computer running on windows xp and it wanted to format it.

When i try to run it without formatting it it says, "e: is not accessible. The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. " My question is, what did windows 7 do to my flash drive and how do i recover my data?

Ide Hard Drive (usb 2.0) Not Recognized At Computer Startup

Ide hard drive in external enclosure (usb 2. 0) not recognized by windows 7 at computer startup, but recognized if it is rebooted after windows 7 is done loading. I have a western digital 500gb pata (ide) hard drive in an enclosure. I leave the enclosure on at all times since it has a cooling fan.

However, if for whatever reason i need to reboot my system, windows 7 never recognizes this drive unless i turn off and on my enclosure. Once i reboot my enclosure, windows 7 recognizes the drive and tries to autoplay. I would like w7 to recognize my drive at startup so that i don't have to reboot my enclosure every time i reboot my computer. What can i do to fix this?

Bootable Flash Drive Or Hard Drive To Install Win 7

estimating windows 7 wim file sizes - ufd too small for image. I was trying to capture awim file for windows 7 to a bootable ufd, but the 16gb ufd was too small. I reran and directed the capture to a usb hard drive. Is there a tool to estimate the ufd size required? Is the fat32 format a constraint? Can i build a bootable usb hard drive and capture the image to it so that if i boot from the usb hd instead of the ufd? Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.
