Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Bootable Flash Drive Or Hard Drive To Install Win 7

estimating windows 7 wim file sizes - ufd too small for image. I was trying to capture awim file for windows 7 to a bootable ufd, but the 16gb ufd was too small. I reran and directed the capture to a usb hard drive. Is there a tool to estimate the ufd size required? Is the fat32 format a constraint? Can i build a bootable usb hard drive and capture the image to it so that if i boot from the usb hd instead of the ufd? Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.

Installer Put Boot Data On Wrong Drive

My computer has a new sata (c:) drive and an older ide (d:) drive that i use for infrequently used items. When i installed windows 7, even though i chose the sata drive to; 1)create the new partition, 2) format the partition and 3) install win 7. The install was successful and i was able to use the os. However, i couldn't restart without inserting the install disk. After some investigation, i discovered that the windows 7 installer had put the boot information on the ide drive.

Now i can set the bios to use the ide drive as the primary boot device, and everything works ok (windows runs from c: ok), but i wanted to remove the ide drive from the computer, since i no longer need it. So!  Is there any way to transfer the boot information either from the ide (d:) drive from or the install disk, to the sata (c:) drive, so that i can boot from the same disk from which windows actually runs?  I tried booting from the windows 7 install disk, opening a command prompt and executing the "bootsect.exe" file, but that didn't help (even though it indicated successful execution).

Backup Does Not See External Drive

I have a maxtor ethernet hard drive used for file backups. I was able to use this in vista, but after upgrading to windows 7, backup does not see this external drive, even though it shows it on my network. Windows explorer shows the network mss54d ethernet hard drive, but backup windows7 does not permit me to change from the dvd writer to the external hard drive.

Backup Onto A Second External Drive

I want a second backup on a second external drive (call it "drive2"), so i'd like to either #1) copy every now and again drive1's daily backup file to drive2, or, #2) perform an occasional separate backup directly onto drive2. I'm confused about issues with both approaches. Original title: i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches. With approach i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches.

#1, windows doesn't permit me to just drag the backup file icon from drive1 to drive2; instead, i have to open the file and then copy itsunderlyingbackup set files, at the end of which i’m always asked about merging a folder (see graphic at  http://www.Box.net/shared/ykq0nikfqo): do i answer yes or no? (This merge question comes up even when copying just a single backup set file. ) And, can i drag over to drive2 just the most recent backup set file, or does the backup program update older backup set files when it runs, meaning that i would have to copyeverybackup set file anytime i copy between drive1 and drive2?

With approach #2, i can change settings within the backup program and choose drive2 as the destination, but does that affect theexistingbackup set (which i want to continue using) by creating an incremental backup file in the new destination, or does the backup program interpret a new destination as "create a totally new backup file from scratch on that new destination"? (With xp's ntbackup, you could create different "jobs" and different . Bkf files; does windows 7 backup offer a similar choice?)

Internal Drive Not Available For Backup

I had been running vista business x86 and using an internal hard drive to do backups. I upgraded to windows 7 x86 and, after changing to a processor that supported virtualization, i did an install of windows 7 x64, since it wouldn't allow an upgrade. I am now getting all the programs reinstalled and back to where i was with one exception. When i try to setup the backup destination, the internal drive is not available. I am also not able to reformat the drive because of the "trusted installer". What can i do to use the internal drive?

Restoring A Vista Data Backup In Win 7

Before installing windows 7 ultimate, i backed up my data onto a usb portable hard drive using the data backup program included in vista home premium. Using the windows 7 backup and restore program, i restored my backup of ~140 gigs. However, after the restore completed i couldn't locate any of the restored data in windows 7 explorer but the drive did have ~140 gigs less free space (so apparently it is there). I then added up all gigs used in all the root directories, and that too was ~140 gigs short of the supposed used space on the drive.

I went to the command prompt, and when i did a hidden directory search (dir /ah) the restored directory was there. But, i can't access it or remove it. Does anyone know how i can access it (doubtful) or at least remove it so i can free up the hard drive space? I didn't realize until after restoring the backup that in doing the custom install of windows 7 (vista 32 bit to windows 7 64 bit), windows creates a "windows. Old" directory that contains all of the vista files that i needed. I wish i knew that before i did the restore.

Backup Does Not Allow Backups To Network Drive

Win 7 home premium backup does not allow backups to a network drive but it will allow a restore from network drive. Vista home premium allowed backup and restore to a network drive. I assumed win 7 home premium would have the same capability - wrong. Win 7 allows you to restore from a network drive - so how can you restore if you can't backup there? I thought the win 7 restore capability may have been included for previous versions of backup but it doesn't recognize my old vista premium backups.

I keep getting a message telling that my recovery d drive backup failed because my d drive is almost full. When i click to do a disk cleanup i the cleanup screen which only offers to let me delete files from the recycle bin. However the recycle bin always says there ar 0 bytes in it. I need to know what files should be in the recover d drive and which i can safely delete. Is it ok to just delete everything in the file and then do a system restore? I don't recall backing up files to the recovery d drive other than doing a system restore and when i try to check to see what files are there i dont recognize what they are. My computer is a dell insperion 530

Restoring Backup To A Network Drive

Is it possible to restore a backup to a network drive? I created a backup of my win7 rc to a mapped nas. I'd like to restore the backup to a folder on the nas to verify the contents of the backup before installing the full retail version. I would also like to be able to hand pick what files i copy from the nas to the new install. When i chose to restore the backup to a different location, the restore button is greyed out when selecting a folder on the w: mapped network drive. I can only click the restore button if select a location on the c: drive.

Backup To External Drive Failing

Am using windows backup with an external 1tb seagate xtreme freeagent drive, on an esata connection. The drive shows up as d: normally in windows explorer. Backup seems to reach around 57% ("creating system image"), then fails, with no error message. When i check windows explorer, the external drive (d:) has vanished. Scanning for new devices in device manager re-detects the seagate drive, but re-running backup results in same error.

Only workaround which sometimes works is to format the external drive, then re-run windows backup again, but this takes hours and is very manual. Subsequent incremental backups tend to fail again.
Any suggestions please?

Cannot Manage Backup Space On More Than 1 Drive At A Time

Cannot manage backup space on more than 1 drive at a time; can view backups on more than 1 drive at a time. I make image and regular backups to 2 different usb drives - because you do not know when a backup drive will fail. Win7 backup and restore gui allows one to view backups on multiple drives at same time via "select another backup to restore files from".

Manage space only allows to manage space on the currently configured backup drive. Further - if modifying the configuration to select a different drive - you are forced to start a backup before you can manage space on that drive. - "Save settings and run backup" there may be little space on the drive - so i will have to either cancel the backup after started or configure a useless  small backup so that i can then manage space on the drive.

Cannot Access Maxtor Usb Backup Drive

Windows 7 cannot access my maxtor usb backup drive but it shows it is working properly under device manager. It does not show that it is present in windows explorer. How do i get it to use the drive? I have a maxtor one touch external drive using a usb cable connection. I use it for backup. Windows 7 recognized it and created a backup image during install a couple of weeks ago. Since then it does not see the drive in windows explorer. Does not access it for backup. It does show up in device manager and indicates it is working properly. I have unistalled the driver and reinstalled it and the software but it still does not work.

1t External Drive Full After Scheduled Backup

I have a 1t external drive. The backup is half that & scheduled for each monday evening. 2 mondays. Full drive. Now what? Am i missing something? I would think the backup utility would do a comparison of the data on the main system and the backup and make them match each time the utility is run. If it does not work this way, how can i use the back up utility? Do i have to go in each week and remove the earlier back up manually?

Backup Fails Due To Corrupt C: Drive

Recently backup failed claiming a corrupted c: drive prevented some user files from being copied. On startup disc check is run automatically and reports a fault due to recently installed/upgraded software application and states that the solution is to restore to an earlier point. This fails on a series of restore points citing corrupt c: as the problem. (Some loop huh!)Regcure has been run and sped things up (a lot!) But not resolved the issue.

Windows 7 family premium is being run as an upgrade from the originally installed vista. Ny ideas please? I really don't want to reboot and start again if i can help it, especially as its an upgrade not original installation. (Most of me wants to go back to xp if i must stay on windows!).

Backup And Restore Vs External Hard Drive

I have upgraded from vista ultimate to 7. I also needed to change out my 150gb hdd for a 500gb hdd. I thought the cool thing to do would be to install 7 and all my softwareon the old drive, make a backup/image of that drive onto a spare external drive, install the new drive and restore the image to the new drive.

My plan worked to perfection with one fatal flaw. The image only created 150gb of usable space on my 500gb hdd. So i reinstalled the original 150gb hdd and put the 500gb hdd into an external drive box with usb connection. The computer immediately recognized the 500gb hdd but when i look for it on computer, it won't show up.

Neither will my other external hdd's. I have tried on different usb ports and usb cables and the device manager says that all usb devices are operational. Dell precision m4300, 4gb memory, 2. 50 gh, t9300 core 2 duo 32 bit system. Extra credit: can anyone tell me why the "safely remove hardware and eject media" icon won't work? Double clicking and right mouse click have no affect.
