Protect Files From Being Deleted

How do i protect files and/or folders from being deleted?  Our photos and videos are our most valuable possession and they need better protection - from us. We back up to external drives. But, we would also like to "lock" the files to ensure that when we are sorting, browsing, and copying they are not effectively deleted. How do we eliminate deleting and/or moving of files? If possible we would like to eliminate the possibility to delete while still allowing viewing, copying to project folders, tagging and rating. Is this possible?

Files Send To Dvd-rw Drive On Network Results In Deleted Files

"send to dvd-rw drive" when the source files are on a network drive results in deleted files! Windows 7 rc 7100. Have a mapped drive to another computer. I opened the folder, right clicked on a group of .doc files. I choose "send to dvd-rw drive". Responded to the prompt of "use like usb drive" or use in a cd/dvd player by choosing the 2nd choice. Then was faced with a prompt that filename.doc is no longer in this location cancel/retry/skip. All the files were gone! Not in recycle bin of either computer.

Deleted Files By Accident

I was in recently viewed documents and they were all short cuts to my original files and pictures. I deleted one of them and checked the original location and the file was still there. So i thought these recently viewed were like cookies, so i deleted all 212 of them. Went back into my file folder and they were all gone. Recycle bin was emptied, restore item didn't work either in the recycle bin. I check in system restore but i never backed up my files. All my passwords contained in one word document.

Microsoft Update Deleted All Files

How do i figure out which update did this so i can get rid of it!Ok, here it is. I am really getting upset with microsoft and their updates! This is the second time their updates have done something to my computer! The first time i had to reformat my computer. This time or rather last night i allowed microsoft to install their updates to my computer. After they were through i turned my computer off to go to bed.

And when i turned it back on, i see a message as it is going to the log on screen that says personalizing your desk top this may take a few minutes and when i logged on to my desk top everything and i means everything that i had saved in my c drive no longer existed! I can't believe it! Do you think system restore will bring it all back? Or what else should i try!

Which Win 7 Backup Files Can Be Deleted?

I've been using windows 7 (and vista) backup for my pcs and laptops to back-up to an external hard drive. The drive has now run out of space and i need to find some room. Windows has automatically created a number of sub-directories on the drive under the pcs' names over the last several months. Can i just delete the older folder(s) to create more space? My concern is that the back-up has been an incremental one and deleting one or more of the older folders will mean that a restore (should it ever be needed) won't work.

Live Sync - Unwanted Restoration Of Deleted Files

For the last three months i have had a recurring problem of deleted files from livesync re-appearing suddenly overnight out of the blue. I can verify that they are in fact gone from the directories of all three of my syncing computers (two on xp, one on windows 7). Then suddenly out of nowhere, 24-48 hours later, i get all the files deleted since january 2010 reappearing in their original directories. It's a huge headache and takes hours & hours to delete again manually.

Setting Up Security To Protect Router

I set up a network and installed a router for wireless access to the net. I did not set up the security protection on the router at that time. Am trying to do so now but keep running into road block. I followed the directions  for security set up in the "setting up a wireless network. When i click on the "set up a new network" and click next i get a window that has two (2) messages.

"Choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure" and "it might take up to 90 seconds for unconfirmed devices on your computer to appear". Under the second message is a blank box. Nothing ever appears and the only options i am left with is cancel or next selection is not activated. Can someone help on where to go from here. The router manufacturer has provided ip address and password which i don't know what to do with.

Earlier this year i bought an asus ul30a with windows 7 home premium. A while ago i formatted the os partition and installed a different os, but now it has crashed (can't boot), and i want to format it and go back to windows 7. How do i do that? I purchased it and have a product key. Is it possible for me to download an install file from microsoft to a different computer (for free of course), put it on a usb (the ul30a has no optical drive), boot my asus from that and install windows, using the product key i already have? Btw i have some files that i cannot afford to lose, they are on another partition of the same hdd.

Chkdsk Deleted An Index

I'm running windows 7 professional 64. Today i turned my pc on and it ran chkdsk for no apparent reason. As far as i can tell it deleted the index for one of my music files (filename. Wav), then replaced the index for the orphaned file with filename?Wav. The file still seemed to exist on the computer, but it didn't seem to know what to do with itself. I found that the file name in windows was filename[japanese character]wav, and i'd assume the japanese character i saw was there in place of a ?, As? Is one of the characters that can't be in a file name. Does anyone know what has happened or why? For the record, i can make a new file from the original audio cd, but it bothers me that this has happened at all, and i'm worried that it'll happen again and i'll lose something more important.

Deleted And Changed Registry

Currently i am running win7 ultimate x64. I was trying to get wmp 11 to run on win7 using these instructions: http://www.Blogsdna.com/2409/downgrade-windows-media-player-12-to-wmp-11-on-windows-7.htm

Since altering the registry, i am no longer able to use wmp 12 or wmp 11. I have tried to download and reinstall the wmp 12 pack (both x64 and x86), but i am told that it is not suitable for my computer. I have also run my win7 repair disc. Any help on how to restore my computer. Wmp to its original state would be appreciated.

I right-clicked the windows explorer icon on the task bar and selected delete from the context menu. Doing this in xp just deletes the icon. It looks like doing this in w7 deleted the program. When i press windows key + e i get an explorer.exe pop-up window that says: "unspecified error. " When i go to start | accessories | windows explorer i get an explorer.exe pop-up window with the message, "this file does not nave a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default program control panel. " I just moved to this w 7 laptop from an xp laptop a couple of days ago. Any way to fix this?

Login Cookies Are Being Deleted

Okay, this is a weird one! Every so often, seemingly at random, i sit down at my computer to find all my login cookies have been deleted from my favorite websites. This is a reall pain! The first thing i did to solve this was to reset my privacy settings to 'medium' from 'medium high. ' i then added every one of my favourite websites to the list of sites allowed to use cookie information. This worked for the last couple of days.

Then, i woke up this morning to find it had happened again! All my cookies had been deleted, and i had to sign in to all of my favourite websites. I've checked to see if maybe my antivirus program (avg) or anti-spyware program (adaware and spybot s&d) were responsible. Nope, neither one had done a scan in recent days. The only other possibility i could think of was that maybe there had been a power failure during the night, but that would be the first time a power failure has caused this to happen. It certainly never happened when i was running windows xp.

Nor did i get a message about improper shutdown when i first went online this morning. Everything looked the way it always looked, expect for the missing cookies! (I left the computer running all night, as i have seti at home installed, and it works on analyzing data from outer space while i sleep. ) Can someone please help me get rid of this cookie monster that keeps 'eating' my cookies?

Sticky Note Can't Be Deleted

I have a particular sticky note that seems to be stuck somewhere on my laptop which is running windows 7 home premium 64 bit edition. I can create new notes, delete all other existing notes, etc. , But this one particular note can't be opened or deleted. When i select it from a search box, a new blank note opens (rather than opening that note). A screen shot of what i mean can be viewed at http://www.Zumodrive.com/share/6xrwotnmmz. Note i crossed out the names in the memo title for anonymity reasons, but you'll see the note is stuck there from july 8th, and you'll note a new blank note which opens if i click it.

I hope i've adequately explained the problem i'm having with this screen shot. It's kind of a strange problem to describe in writing, particularly because i doubt that most people use a search box like this to view a list of their sticky notes, but rather probably just open the sticky notes to see all their notes at once. If i can provide any further details, please advise, and i'll be happy to do so. I'd greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can offer.

Media Center Albums Deleted

Within the last week, i upgraded from windows vista to windows 7. In my windows vista version of the media center, i had nearly 60 cds that i'd ripped and kept in my albums collection. This evening, i found that my windows media center shows me having 22 albums, most of them intact, a few not, and the 22nd album containing 600+ tracks. Basically all the other missing albums lumped into one. Everything appears to be correct when i access them through the media player, but completely ruined in the media center. Is there any way i can restore my original albums without deleting my whole music collection and starting from scratch?

Deleted Encrypted Bitlocker Partition

Here's the clearest description i can can up with:

Was running: seagate 320gb hd -60gb storage partition (d:) -240gb windows & everything else partition (c:) -additional 100mb "system reserved" partitions -hidden? Partitions (not sure, because i was using bitlocker) windows 7 ultimate 64-bit w/256 aes bitlocker encryption on both partitions.

It had been a while since installation, and i was receiving bsods every time i restarted/shutdown. I figured i would do my normal routine: backup all my documents from my windows partition (c:) to my storage partition (d:), delete, recreate, and format the c: partition, and reinstall windows. After installation, i could simply type my password into the d: drive and unencrypted it. I've done it this way dozens (yes, that's accurate) of times.

This time, however, when i deleted the c: partition (using the windows installation disc), all (let me dwell on that for a moment. A l l . )Of my partitions were deleted. After a few brief moments of turrets syndrome, my instincts kicked in, and i shut off all power to the drive to preserve as much as possible. No formatting was done. It simply says that i have 290ish gb of unallocated space.

Using another computer, i ordered and received a 2tb western digital hd. I removed the old hd, installed the new one, and installed windows without a hitch. I attached the old hd using another sata hookup (they are both sata). I have tried using easeus to recover the hidden storage partition (d:). I have found numerous variations of 294gb, 100mb partitions, and even found a partition with 60gb (bingo!) But it won't let me retrieve it.

So here's the bottom line: is there any way i can recover my partition, encrypted or not (i have the key), using my new hard drive and old hard drive? Gimme anything. Program names, processes, something please?

Win 7 Restore Points Deleted By Xp

I have two separate os systems (xp pro and win 7 pro) on separate hard drives. Restore points are created on both systems. No problem with xp. I have presently 20% of the 500gb drive reserved for restore points in win 7. I am only monitoring win 7 on the win 7 drive and only xp on the xp drive. No files are on the win 7 drive- only the os and programs. Win 7 works fine and keeps the restore points. However if i boot up xp pro and then boot up win 7 pro i find that all of the restore points that had been listed in win 7 have been deleted. How do i fix this problem?

How To Fix Partitions Deleted By Update?

The latest round of updates has wiped four partitions by changing the partition table on windows 7 professional 64-bit! Having been on holiday for three weeks with no net connection, i found a multitude of updates apparently needed when i got my laptop back home. Luckily for me, i downloaded my pictures from the laptop to the desktop machine before doing the updates. (The laptop is fully protected by mcafee, with no reported problems. )One of these has changed my partition table so that only the c: drive is available.

The rest of the [previously allocated space is now apparently 'free space' according to the disk management utility in windows 7 professional 64-bit. Nice one! I now don't have my programs, data, pictures or media partitions. Also, the registry is in a mess as it still thinks that all the programs installed into the programs partition are present, but can't find them as there is no partition! It seems i am left with an install from scratch to sort out the mess - unless someone out there knows better?

Desktop Icons And Folders Cannot Be Deleted

Help me remove icons and files from my desktop! I've deleted them several times - put in the recycle bin, emptied the bin, shut down, and the same files keep reappearing. I recently had the img virus, which was successfully removed from my laptop - and the virus installed a folder on my desktop - which is how i knew i had a virus. That folder keeps reappearing but tech support shows no trace of the virus remaining. I store temp images and docs on my desktop and wanted to clean it up.

Win 7 Recreates Deleted Wifi Profiles

I'm running windows 7 64 bit. I have two wireless routers. My wireless n router a linksys wag160n is the default router with wpa2 enabled. I have a wireless n dongle. The room the computer is in appears to be on the end of the range and keeps loosing connection, however when i implemented a netgear 802. 11g router, it can connect to this quite happily. The problem is that windows 7 insists on reconnecting to the linksys every time it finds it.

I moved the profile down the list in the network wifi management console and windows 7 keeps bumping it back to the top. I deleted the profile and windows recreated it. I tried putting dummy settings in and windows 7 rewrites it. I tried renaming it and windows leaves the renamed profile in place and creates the old one again.

The only way i can now think round this is to change the ssid on the linksys and change all the pcs that connect to it successfully. I'm also thinking of scrapping the linksys as it doesn't perform as well as an older router and it keeps dropping the adls link. I don't want to use the netgear for security reasons. Any advice before i throw the linksys away?

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

A2c Files Downloaded As Zip Files

If you go to alice.org and try to download one of their image files, ie8 changes the extension from a2c to zip making the file unusable unless the user manually changes the file extension.

http://alice.org/index.php?Page=gallery/amusement park/index

In our school network users are not allowed to change the file extension so that does not work. I found that the user when downloading has to change the file type to all files and change the file extension then. This is a bother to have to remember. When i tried with a different browser (chrome) the a2c file was recognized correctly. The computers in my school are laptops running windows xp. At home my desktop runs windows 7 and the problem is there as well. There was no problem with ie7.

Docx Files Downloading As Zip Files

I am having an issue with docx files turning into zip files when i try and download them in ie8. I have done alot of research on this problem and have looked into the 2 main solutions to this problem: 1) set security settings to "open file based on file content, not file extension" to disable  2) check the mime type table on the web server and make sure the office 2007 extensions are added.

The first step i tried and the file was still trying to open as a zip file. The second one i was only able to ask the vendor because the web server does not belong to me, but the vendor said they were able to get the same exact docx file to download as a docx file and everyone on their end was able to. I am able to save the zip file and rename the file extension to docx and open it, but sadly this will not be an acceptable answer.

I've tried adding registry settings to allow it to open with docx files as well with no success.
I am curious if anyone has any other suggestions for me?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.
