Win 7 64-bit Ram Is Gone

Upgraded from windows vista 32 bit version to windows 7 64 bit version, hoping for the improved performance by being able to use all my ram in the 64 bit version, my 4 gigs of ram previously being limited to 3. 3 due to the inherent nature of 32 bit os's. I formatted the system drive as directed so i could put in a fresh 64 bit install on the system. After all was up and set, i hit the desktop and checked my ram, it was reading 2 gigs.

Upon further investigation it is now showing 2 gigs of ram in bios as well, but here's the sticker. It's detecting both dimm 2 gig sticks, just only half of each stick! Did windows 7 quietly flash my bios? I can't fix this issue no matter what settings i try, and post is quite insistent i only have 2 gigs now. I tried changing each stick individually and with each one only in the system, both each read 1 gig alone, they were 2 gig sticks before windows 7!

Motherboard: evga nforce 780 sli
Ram: 2 gig  patriot dimm 800hrz ramx2

Not Showing All Ram In Win 7 32-bit

I have just built from the ground up a new system with 4 gb ram. I have installed win 7 32 bit. The bios shows 4g, but windows only recognizes 2. 4 gb. I have verified the following (stolen from other forums): bios. You can check with your bios manufacturer, about how to enable the maximum memory.

Check the advanced boot options.
1. Go to start, in the search bar type msconfig and press enter.
2.system configuration window will open on the screen.
3. Click on tab named "boot".
4. Click on "advanced options" and uncheck the box for "maximum memory".

I have verified the max memory is unchecked, and found it unchecked.

For the record, i have the following hardware:
Msi nf980-g65 mobo
4gb ocz ddr3 pc1600 (2x2g)
2 nvidia 7800 gt (256 mb) in sli

Win 7 X86 32-bit Only Recognises 3 Of 4 Gb Ram

Windows 7 x86 (32-bit) only recognizes 3 of my 4 gb ram. Should i upgrade to windows 7 x64 (64-bit)? I just upgraded to win 7 from vista (both x86) on my sony vaio vgn-280e which was shipped with vista home prem x86 and sony state that it is capable of 4gb ram. I have just upgraded from 3gb to the full 4. And of course only 3 usable according to system properties.

You all say that it's cos x86 oss aren't capable of 4gb ram but that's just not the case with everyone, i've read other forums where people have. And also where x64 users can't access all their 4gb, only 3 or 3. Xgb. I have run linux x86 on here, which uses the full 4, and have an os x leopard install which also detects and uses all 4gb. My bios detects all 4 too. Is there absolutely no way that i can get win 7 to use the full 4gb ddr2 (pc-2 5300 667) ram i have installed?

Further system spec:
Mobile intel 965 express chipset family
Core 2 duo 667mhz t5450 cpus
Intel gma x3100 video (total available graphics memory: 358mb - 64 system, 294 shared)

Also: if i upgrade to win 7 x64, and the full 4gb ram is utilized by the system, isn't the trade-off that an x64 os is more demanding on system resources including ram? Ie. Probably performance-wise i'm not any better off?

Extra question to you: how do i update bios? My bios is showing the full 4 actually, so is my os x install (and using it too). But win 7 x86 says 4 installed, using 3. How can i tell if that extra 1 is or isn't "wasted", ie is it going to graphics (c. 300mb in my case) etc?

Win 7 64-bit Crash - Ram Issues

I recently picked up a copy of windows 7 and thought i'd do a few hardware upgrades at the same time, notably picking up an extra 2x2gb of ram.

The (clean) windows installation continually crashed after the "completing installation" restart, so long as these new ram chips were in the machine; when they were removed, the install went flawlessly. Subsequently, when i put them back in after the install, the computer began to crash just after clearing the windows load screen (the same location as during the install).

I have since tested both these two ram chips and some extra 1gbs that i had laying around in various configurations and amounts to the point where i think i can say that all the ram sticks work fine, as do the slots on the motherboard. I even flashed the motherboard bios hoping that would solve my troubles, but no luck. The bios recognizes all installed ram, and only crashed *after* windows began to load. As near as i can tell, using completely different ram sticks than my new shineys, windows crashes only if my system exceeds 3gbs of ram. Under or at 3gb is fine, in any ram slot configuration, but as soon as i throw the extra gig in it starts to crash.

I've seen other cases on the 'net of similar ram issues caused by the motherboard, but microsoft's compatibility center seems to indicate i should be alright.

Any ideas?

System specs
Asus m2a-mvp mobo
Amd athlon 64 x2-6000+ cpu
Radeon x1950 pro video

Win 7 Home 64-bit Ram Issues

Firstly, pc spec etcmobo = gigabyte ga-n650sli-ds4 http://www.Gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?Pid=2514#ovram = corsair xms2 6400c5c 1. 8v ver 5. 1 (currently at 2*2gb sticks)graphics card = nvidia geforce 260 gtx "approx" total memory 2671 mb (as read from dxdiag)cpu = intel core 2 quad @ 2. 40hz(4 cpus)

The issue im having is im trying to upgrade to 8gb or ram on the above mentioned ram sticks but when ever i go above 2 sticks and enter the realms of >4gb ram windows gets as far as the "starting windows" screen and thats it, it wont even play the little animation. The usual hold-down-power for 4 secs to get a power down goes to a single push at this point (unsure if thats relevant).

I have 4 slots and i have tried all the sticks in all the slots (its been a long night). This is all on the back of a new install after something went horribly wrong in the msconfig interface and my machine was stuck in a loop asking if i wanted to repair windows or start normally both would just reboot the machine back to those options.

In the msconfig interface i have unticked the maxi mum memory (an it support told me to tick it and set it to 0 which is how i got the above issue)regarding bios. My bios can see i have 6gb running when i have the 3 sticks in, not even got to 4 sticks yet. But it just seems windows doesn't wanna play ball. Iv never ungraded my bios before as all the warnings signs tell me not to unless its really really needed. I really hope someone can help with this as iv ran out of things to try.

64-bit Win 7 Ram Compatibility - 2gb Only 1.87 Gb Usable

I'm now using windows 7 32-bit, but my programs require an upgrade to windows 64-bit version. I have used windows 7 upgrade advisor to check if my computer can install a 64-bit version. Then i received a report that said my ram is not compatible. I install 2gb of ram but only 1. 87 gb are usable, so the report said i wouldn't be able to install a 64-bit version of windows. It require a whole 2gb of ram. I now wonder to know that can i install that 64-bit version?

Dell Xps 710 - 8gb Ram With Win 7 64-bit

Unable to get to 8gb ram on x64 dell xps 710 windows 7. Less than 6 works fine. Notice asymmetric vs interleaved and sdram speed listings change. Dell xps710 did clean install of windows 7 x64 from xp. All went well and things worked fine for a while. Decided i wanted to get more out of my x64 machine so decided to upgrade the ram from 4x1gb to the system max 4x2gb. I originally ordered the wrong ram (pc2-6400 800mhz) and when i installed them the system wouldn't even turn on.

Picked up the correct pc2-5300 667mhz 4x2gb units and after a clean install i put 2x2gb sdrams in with 2x1gb original sdrams. Machine shows 6. 0 gb installed and lists them as 667mhz and dual asymmetric. Everything works fine.

If i installed 4x2gb sdrams, the system says 8gb installed but lists them as 800mhz and dual interleaved? Won't make it through startup. Will try to do a repair but nothing works. Go back to 6 or 4 gb and things are fine? Any ideas?

Win 7 64-bit Installed 12gb Ram But Only Sees 6gb

I have windows 7 64 professional installed with 12 gb of ram and i note the following:

Cpu-id shows me with 12 gb of ram (http://valid. Canardpc.com/show_oc.php?Id=1136011)
However, window's system info show installed memory (ram) as 6. 00 gb. I also notice that during boot-up, the screen indicates that there is also only 6 gb. Lastly, i ran the memory configuration from crucial which also shows only 6 gb of ram!

Any ideas?

Win 7 64-bit Bsod When Playing Wow Game - Ram Issue

I've been getting windows blue screen of death for some time. I thought it was one of my ram because after swapping them in and out of every slot and even one at a time. One of them was the one that was causing the bsod while the other one was stable. So i replaced both with 4 new sticks and now i'm getting bsod even more often. Like every 30 mins. Before i used to only get it when i was playing a game like wow when i had 2 sticks of ram in and i could go days without crashing. With 1 stick it was constantly stable. Here's are my 2 most recent errors:

Problem signature:
Problem event name: bluescreen
Os version: 6. 1. 7600. 2. 0. 0. 256. 48

Upgrading Ram - Which Type Of Ram I Would Need?

Currently i have a windows vista 32 bit, and am going to go to windows 7 64 bit. I only have 2 gigs of ram right now but i want to upgrade to 4 gigs.

Current specs:
Intel core2 duo t9300 2. 5ghz
2. 00gb ram
Windows vista 32 bit

1- i was wondering how to find out which type of ram i would need. (Btw, this is a laptop)

2- is there anywhere that can give instructions for self installation (i heard it was easy to do myself), or if its even wise to do it myself.

3- would it would benefit me to install the ram before or after i did a clean install for windows 7

Ps- any reliable companies that you would suggest that make ram.

Win 7 64-bit Doesn't Distinguish Between Ie8 64-bit And Ie8 32-bit

Windows 7 64bit doesn't distinguish between ie8 64 bit and ie8 32 bit when attempting to set a default browser using the control panel default programs 'associate' utility. My new windows 7 64 bit pc (luv that i7 920 intel cpu) came installed with both ie8-64 bit and ie8-32 bit (nothing more need be said regarding the absurdity of having to deal with this in the first place - i should have gone with the imac).

Anyway, ie64 bit lacks the flash player cuz adobe hasn't released a 64 bit version yet, per their website. So i can't use ie64 with xm online music stream (et al). Ie32, on the other hand, supports flash player, but won't successfully link to various embedded hypertext links, such as those embedded in an email. My initial solution was to use firefox, which served me well until an application from a local vendor will only work with internet explorer. Sigh.

I've used windows since version 2 back in the 1980s, have become stoic, and can emotionally cope with having to use 3 browsers to get the job done.

However, just for fun, my current burning question is, with two different versions of ie8 (64 bit and 32 bit) installed into windows 7, why doesn't the control panel default applications utility seem to aware of the fact that there are indeed two different versions installed? It lists firefox and internet explorer, but does not differentiate between the two flavors of ie. My goal was to set ie8 64 bit as the default browser temporarily to accommodate the vendor's application.

Fyi, by setting the default, i refer to: control panel | default programs | associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scroll down to 'http' and click on the change program button. So in my case, firefox and only one instance of internet explorer, with no bit distinction, display as selection options.

Xp Mode Is 64-bit Or 32-bit In Win 7 64-bit

I am planning on purchasing win 7 pro & installing the 64-bit version. I intend to make use of the "xp mode" feature if i can install 32-bit printer drivers within the xp mode, as my photo printers have no 64-bit drivers. I currently edit my photography on a win xp pro 64-bit pc, which is networked to a win xp pro 32-bitpc in order to print images. I need to know if "xp mode" is 32-bit - even when installed with the 64-bit version of win 7 pro. I want to be able to convert/edit my photos in win 7 64-bit, then print these images using "xp mode" via the 32-bit driversi intend to installin xp mode- all from the same pc. Is this do-able?

Upgrading Ram

Why on earth is sdram more expensive than ddram? I thought that since it's an older version of ram it'd be cheaper. Well anyway, i'm trying to upgrade someone's pc and they are currently using sdram (sdr 133) on their computer - problem being the 2 ram cards aren't even the same size or brand - they do not wish to spend a lot of money, but want more memory on their pc for when they upgrade to windows 7 home premium. I know you're supposed to look at the motherboard to see what ram is compatible with it, but what am i looking for? Please, any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Four 240-pin ddr2 sdram dual inline memory module (dimm) sockets
Channel a slot 0 and slot 1
Channel b slot 0 and slot 1
Support for ddr2 800 mhz, or ddr2 667 mhz dimms
Support for up to 8 gb£ of system memory

Here's the motherboard link :

I have two 2 gb ram sticks
Transcend 2 gb ddr2 667 mhz
Kingston 2 gb ddr2 800 mhz

I have plugged the 667mhz ram stick on channel a slot 0 and 800mhz ram stick on channel b slot 1. Would it make a difference in the performance of the computer if i use 2 ram sticks on different channels or shall i get ram sticks with similar speed.

Ram Problem With Xp Vs 7

I have an older computer that has been running windows xp for a long time. It was custom build has an old fic k8-800t motherboard with amd anthlon 64 process and 3 ram slots equaling 2 gigs (1=1g and 2=512mb).

Upon trying windows 7 i could not get anything to install. I tried all different combination of my ram and also did a memtest that gave em no errors. Finally i got windows to install with just 1 of the 512's. Now that its installed if i put in anything other than 1 512 it will boot then freeze soon after. Aka i can't put the 1 gig or 2 of the 512's or all three. My question is i know alot of people would tell me its a ram problem and to get knew ram but i did mem test and found no errors and as of last night windows xp was running fine. So i'm a little confused on why its knit picking the ram so awkwardly.

Using 5 Gb Of Ram Idle

When i first start windows 7 it normally uses about 1 gb of ram idle. After having my computer turned on for an hour or so, the ram usage creeps up to 5 gb idle. The ram usage of the processes in my process list is only around 150 mb. If i reboot its back to 1 gb, but it slowly creeps back up to 5 gb. What gives?

I thought i would try to re-install windows 7 as a possible solution, but i put my windows 7 dvd in and my computer only shows a readme.txt file on the disk which states something about a udf error.

Ati Radeon Sapphire 5770 - Win 7 64-bit Asks For 32-bit Drivers

I have windows 7 64 bit. I recently changed my video card for an ati radeon sapphire 5770. I had an nvidia before that stopped working. I installed the lastest drivers from ati for win7 64 bit (version 10. 5) after uninstalling those from nvidia. Everything seems to be working fine, but windows keep telling me that there's no drivers installed for my card, even tho i can access the catalyst control center. When i click on the link that windows provide, it always lead to the 32 bit version of win 7. Is it a known problem? Is there something i can do to correct that?

Multi-boot System Win 7 64-bit & Vista 32-bit On One Hard Drive

Multi-boot system windows 7 (64-bit) & vista (32-bit) on one hard drive - do i need two hard drives?I have an existing windows vista ultimate (32-bit) system installed on a 500gb sata hard drive, partitioned into 2 partitions (c: and d:). I would like to make the system multi-boot so that i can back-track to vista if i have a problem with win7.

One issue here is that i plan on multi-booting vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit on the same hard drive without touching the d: partition of the hard drive. I don't know if this is possible, but i'm interested to see if it is.

I've done some research and have found that win7 has many compatibility modes, so maybe i don't need to worry about keeping an installation of vista on my system? I just don't want to be "caught with my pants down" if something were to go wrong with win7, like if one of my programs was incompatible or something along those lines.

If i can't multi-boot vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit from the same hard drive, can i do it with 2 hard drives having one os on each hard drive? Or, am i being much too paranoid about this and should i trust microsoft on this one that win7 will not have any large compatibility issues with my most used programs?

For reference, here are some of my most used programs: firefox 3. 5, steam, adobe photoshop (versions 7. 0 and cs3), ie tester (for web development), winamp, trillian (an im and irc program), itunes, skype, mozilla thunderbird (for e-mail), and fraps (in-game video recording software).

I know that this is a lot all at once, but does anyone see any foreseen compatibility issues with any of these programs and win7 64-bit ? I'm also worried about the compatibility of some of my drivers with win7 64-bit, but i've heard that there have been leaps and bounds made with driver compatibility on win7 64-bit (as compared to the mess it was with xp 64-bit). Is this true?

Printer Sharing - 64-bit Win 7 And 32-bit Xp In Remote Desktop Session

Printer sharing - 64 bit windows 7 and 32 bit windows xp in a remote desktop session. Windows 7 machine with a local ricoh / aficio 1045 b & w multifunction printer attached. Works fine, uses 64 bit printer driver. This computer connects to a windows xp machine (32 bit) using remote desktop session (terminal services).

On the xp machine, i installed the 64 bit printer driver via printers and faxes -> server properties - drivers - add driver. I can see the driver there, successfully installed (have rebooted, etc). Despite this, the printer will still not show up when rd session is run. In event viewer, i can see there's an issue with it finding the correct driver.

I've used the terminal server printer redirection tool in the past to solve these problems (tspdrw.exe) which works great. The correct 64 bit driver is not listed as a choice when scrolling through options to reassign the driver. Hopefully that is clear, not sure what i am missing.

Can anyone tell me with certainty if the drivers will or wont work for windows 7?

Upgrading 32-bit Vista To 64-bit Win 7 Without Losing Files

I have two computers with vista home premium 32-bit oem versions on them. I want to upgrade both of them to windows 7 home premium 64-bit versions, without losing any files, folders or programs.

Can i use the same family pack license to upgrade both computers to windows 7 home premium 32-bit versions, then upgrade both 32-bit versions to 64-bit versions using the same family pack license?

Will this keep the original files, folders and programs intact? Is this a reasonable process that will get both computers to 64-bit versions? Or should i just upgrade both computers to 32-bit versions of windows 7, and live with it?
