Activating On A 2nd Computer

I upgraded from vista to 7 on a laptop. Several features were lost so i want to go back to vista. With that i'm ok with. I have a desktop i need to reinstall windows onto (hd died and i am replacing it so no os on it right now). I originally bought vista for it and was using vista on it before it crashed. Windows 7 is compatible with all the hardware and software for the desktop.

If i reinstall vista on the laptop (and no longer using my purchased copy of windows 7), can i install the windows 7 on the desktop now? I guess what i am asking is, since i installed my copy of win 7 and used the key on the laptop, will ms know that i am no longer using the os on the laptop so i can use the same key on the desktop? Do i have to somehow unregister win 7 from the laptop before reinstalling vista, so i can install it on the desktop?

Activating Win7

I purchased a new desktop computer that had windows 7 home premium on it. I later purchased a used laptop that had windows 7 ultimate on it. Shortly after i had started working with the laptop, i received a message that the windows 7 program was not authorized. So i went and purchased the windows 7 ultimate upgrade package and installed the 32 bit disc onto my laptop. Everything seems to be fine with the laptop. I then put the 64 bit disc into my desktop, and after a few minutes it said i needed to use windows anytime upgrade to upgrade the windows home premium. After restarting, the computer said i now had windows 7 ultimate.

But i keep getting an attempt to activate, then the attempt fails. I go through the steps and keep hitting on the buy new product key. The validation program runs, and tells me the program is valid. But then i'm told i've got 25 days left, and the activation program keeps running. I've tried just going back to the windows 7 home premium, but it says to reinstall it and it doesn't reinstall. What is the problem? Am i activated? It's valid. Does everything stop after 25 days? It doesn't make sense.

Activating Second License

I recently bought a office home and student 2007 suite. I activated the license on my son's computer in south africa. As the home  office package allows me 3 licenses, i would now like to activate a second license. I am currently living in sweden for the next couple of months. How do i now activate the second license in a different country. ?

Although the box says that there is an activation restriction (south africa only), the salesman at the pc shop told me that i should be able to activate the second and the third license in different countries. However the activation keeps on failing. Can you please suggest what i should do to install the second license in a different country?

Activating Ultimate

Here is my problem: i bought windows 7 ultimate through ebay. I was sent a download location and the key to register it. That was about 4 months ago. Now i start getting this annoying messages about it being a counterfeit copy. So i read a little and it seems that it was actually a scam. Then i proceed to buy a copy from amazon and when i try to change the product key i get a screen saying that the key is blocked. I tried phone activation without luck also. Here is the wga tool says:

Activating Administrator

I used the transfer utility to transfer my credentials from a windows business laptop to a brand new laptop with windows home premium on it. When i got to windows hp i found out that my account was a standard account instead of an administrators account - even through the account says administrator type when i drilled down it was set to standard and would not allow me to change it. Looking at some of the other threads i tried a number of things and this is what i found to work below for me.

Signed on to my account
Went to the windows/system32 directory and found cmd.exe
Highlighted the file name and right clicked
Chose run as administrator from the menu
Double clicked on the file
The command window opened
Typed in net user administrator /active:yes
Closed the command window
Rebooted

The administrator now show up on the welcome window i tried the windows key and r - which did not work. When i tried to type lusrmgr. Msc i got the message that this was not supported in home premium my question is was this because my transferred account was an administrator's account to begin with? Or was this fluke that i managed this - the administrators account when activated does not have a password on it and i'm assuming that i should create one - but i'm not sure what will do after the fact to windows utilities and the like. Anyone?

Re-activating Win7

My computer came with windows vista, i then upgraded it to win 7. I recently wiped my hard drive totally clean, with no back ups, images, etc. I did put  a system image on an external hard drive, but it killed my external hard drive (about a month to early before microsoft came out with their update to prevent this unfortunately). I was having compatibility problems, so the idea was to have two partitions, xp 32 bit, as i knew that would be compatible, and reinstall win 7 with the
32 bit disk and hoped for compatibility since i like using it as an os.

This is when i realized the upgrade disk was from vista only, but could be installed like a fresh copy. I didn't have compatibility issues with my win 7 32 bit, so i made a system image back up before i wiped the drive. Unable to recover anything from the external hard drive (frustrating to say the least), i installed my win 7 32 for the last time, now however, the product key is only for an upgrade. I can't seem to get around this.

2nd Email Account

I've sent up my first comcast email account without any issues. I've then created another identity on the computer and tried to set up my second comcast email account but have run into this problem. It tells me i'm successful but when it tries to send or receive email i get a "logon to mail.comcast.net box asking for my user name and password. I type in what i think my user name for my second account is but it still won't "authorize" to get or send emails.

Activating Upgrade Version

I purchased windows 7 professional upgrade version a while back. My laptop previously had windows vista ultimate edition installed by dell when i purchased the machine. Unfortunately my hard drive died between purchasing and installation of windows 7 and the new key does not work as it tells me i'm not allowed to install as a clean installation - which quite frankly is a little annoying.

What do i do now? Do i have to go buy another copy of windows 7 or pay the difference between the upgrade version and the full version? Or do i have to uninstall windows 7, install vista ultimate then reinstall the upgrade version? Either way it is pretty annoying as there was no mention that clean installations are not allowed when installing the upgrade version.

Win 7 Installing For 2nd Pc

I need some help how to activate my windows 7 home edition. I built a new computer all the hardwares are brand new in it. When i wanted to activate the windows it just doesn't accept the product key. I heard that if i install the windows for a new pc the activation can be issue because the product key is already hangs on (or belongs to) the first pc where i installed the windows first. But i didn't believe that can be true. So each time when i upgrade my pc or something breaks in it should i buy a new product key or the disc again ? Any idea what could i do ?

Missing A Partition On 2nd Drive

I purchased a new w7 pc. I added the hd from my old pc as a second drive. This hd had been partitioned to a c, e and f drive. However, i can only see the old c & e partitions (now with drive letters e & f). I can't see the old f drive which contained all my burned cd's. The entire hd is 160gb and windows explorer shows the e&f drives equaling about 150gb, which would be correct with the typical loss of some gb's. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what i can do to see the old f drive? Thank you.

Cannot Detect 2nd Hdmi Tv Display

I had a vga display as my primary display and a hdtv display via a hdmi cable as a second display hooked up to my computer. This worked fine until a month ago. When at first the picture showed only a zoomed in top left hand corner of the screen on my hdtv with all psychedelic colours the first thing i tried was a roll back of the updates but this had no effect, as dis changing the cable. Then when i changed the graphics card windows 7 stopped being able to 'detect' my second display with either card.

Any ideas or solutions would be most helpful?

Activating With Upgrade Product Key

I bought and downloaded a clean install of windows 7 professional 64-bit. Installed and activated onto my desktop no problem. However i did not realize that windows 7 could only be installed on one computer. As such, i installed it onto my laptop, and after 30 days was deactivated. I want to activate it and am wondering if a product key from an upgrade would work? I want to find out for sure before i spend the money on a product key that will be incompatible.

Win 7 Fails To Detect 2nd Monitor On Boot

Clean install of win7 with ati radeon hd4550 pci express graphics card. Running a mitsubishi diamond plus 100e monitor and a sony multiscan 500ps monitor, both off the 4550 card. On boot, the primary (mitsubishi) monitor is detected and the second (sony) monitor is not. I can open the control panel for screen resolution and see both monitors correctly identified. If i select extend these displays, windows re-labels the sony monitor as generic pnp and the sony monitor then activates and works properly.

As soon as i shut down the computer and reboot, the sony monitor is again undetected and i have to go through the whole process again. I have deleted all ati drivers and reinstalled current catalyst drivers (8. 732, 5/26/2010), as well as current motherboard drivers. (Motherboard is gigabyte ma790gp-ds4h). Integrated graphics card on motherboard is currently disabled, although this made no difference to the problem.

And i no longer have the free windows starter disk either or product key for windows ultimate cause i accidentally shipped them in the mail with household goods back to the states, where im being stationed next.

Dual Monitor Problem - 2nd Monitor Detected Black

Ok, so i have a dell that was running vista and two monitors. When i upgraded to windows 7 pro i ran into the infamous black screen problem and fixed it. However, i only fixed my main monitor. When i open the display window, both of my monitors are detected but my secondary monitor shows a black screen and the monitor itself says there is no signal detected from my pc.

The strange thing is my pc thinks its working (i can drag a window from my working monitor towards the black one and it moves out of my working monitor into the black screen). I currently have both of them plugged in using a dvi to vga splitter and i have also updated the drivers by clicking the "update driver" button in the monitor properties window. Please help if you can!

Moving Data From 1st Disk To 2nd Disk

I installed my w7 on a single disk pc then i added a second disk for data. I want to have all my data (documents, photos, music, etc. ) In this second disk. In xp, when i did so, i copy my documents from "documents and settings" folder to the new location (d:/) and i was done. Now in w7 i open the "user" folder i found that files are not on a single folder but that there are several document folders (images, documents, etc. ) And settings folders (favorites, etc. ). May i copy all the user folder to the new location or i must leave there some of them in c:/system/users? In xp, when i move my documents to d:, every thing was redirected there (default1 saving folder, default download folder, defautl music folder, etc. ) In w7, would happen the same? The link on the desktop will redirect me to the location or may continue pointing the old one.

Do You Want The Following Program To Allow Changes To This Computer

I always get message "do you want the following program to allow changes to this computer?" When starting mozilla thunderbird after upgrade from vista to windows 7 home premium. I have changed the "privilege level settings" of thunderbird to "run this program as administrator", but it still makes me log on as administrator every time i start thunderbird to see my email.

This is not only annoying (i.e. Having to login as administrator every time i start thunderbird), but also prevents thunderbird from starting when accessed, for example, from "windows photo viewer" email button (apparently, it tries to start thunderbird, but doesn't have enough permissions so fails).

I don't get this with any of my other applications (e.g. Firefox, etc. Run fine without requiring me to logon as administrator). I'm not sure if i have installed thunderbird odd, or did something else different, but this never happened to me in vista. I don't want to remove all uac security for all programs. What can i do?

Cannot Hibernate Computer

My laptop is a t400 thinkpad lenovo with windows 7. Whenever i try to hibernate it, after the screen turns off it beeps and the "sleep mode" led turns on. The computer doesn't go to hibernation and power doesn't go off. In this situation the only thing i can do is to push the power button for four seconds to kill the power manually and off course next time i turn it on it asks to load the safe mode because of improper shut down. I tries system recovery of windows but it didn't help. The shutdown and sleep both work properly. Anybody has any idea how can i fix this?

I set my computer to sleep after 30 minutes. It did go to sleep. When i moved the mouse to wake it up, only the wallpaper loaded up. No icons at all. I had to turn it off by the on and off button on the tower. Any ideas how to set it to sleep without this problem? This is a new windows 7 computer. Hp pavillion elite 137c

Computer Not Updating

My computer is set to automatically update every day, but has not been updating at all for the past year. When i check for updates, a message appears that says "failed"  and when i look to see the list of things that try to update, they all say "failed. "  When it searches for updates, a code comes up that says "error" with a bunch of numbers after it. Because of the computer unable to update, i am no longer able to print or open up any microsoft programs, such as word or excel.

When i try to open these programs, it tells me that not updating the computer could affect the stability of the computer and that i would need to go to windows update to install new updates. When i opened up windows update, it said that i must first install an update for windows update. I clicked "install now" and it attempts to install, but then goes right back to the original page.

The other night i went online to see what else i could do about this. Several websites said that the problem was most likely from the catroot2 folder and that renaming this folder to catroot2old would fix the problem. I tried this and it would not allow me to change the name. Now i don't know what else to do.

I cannot seem to load my windows operating system. Before this problem occurred, my computer was installing windows updates, but then it freezes and i had to forcefully shut it down. I was hoping since i was no longer using it on the broken machine i could use it on another. Is there any way to activate it?

Installing On New Computer

I am going to be receiving a refurbished computer here soon, i have purchased the windows 7 copy to upgrade from vista. My question is do i just do upgrade or customize and do like a clean install. I will have really nothing on this computer other than what comes on it already. If i do a clean install do i lose things such as (and i know these arnt important things but there just small easy details to elaborate with) solitare, calculator, and meaningless things that like. Or are all of those things then re-installed with the windows 7 reprogram, or will all that stuff then be on other software disks i receive with the computer. Again sorry to sound stupid just want to make sure i do things correctly and should i just do the upgrade or a clean sweep on a new system.
