Upgrade From Backup Disc

Upgrade from backup disc not possible? I bought an upgrade to windows 7 home premium (from vista 64) via the store, downloaded the upgrade file - geez thats a big one. But could not install it kept coming up "crc error". Tried a couple of times to download again, but always ended up with crc error when running the file. So i thought, ok, wait for the backup disc in the post. The latter arrived today (took two weeks).

Put that in the dvd drive, an up comes an error message (contained in a txt file) claiming it cant install from dvd unless the op sys supports iso13346 udf file system spec.

I am assuming that translates to the fact that the back up disc will only work (in terms of op sys install) if windows 7 is installed. If i am correct, and i am posting this to check my assumption, then it looks like i must go back and fight the good fight on clean download of the original upgrade file (i've tried many ways including download managers).

The catch 22 of a op sys install backup disc that will only allow install if the op sys is installed is worthy of monty python, you couldn't make it up. Anyway, having allowed myself a mini-winge.grateful for advice as to whether or not i need to hit the download route again, or if in fact i am making a basic error somewhere.

Phenom2 8gb  1tb disc (currently has vista 64), checks out ok on upgrade advisor, all "green"

Stalled Backup Burn Onto Disc

Yesterday, i tried to burn my weekly back-up disc. It stalled , so i canceled it. Today i tried again, was told to put in the old disc. I did and it stalled again when it came time to take out the first disc. I had to shut down and use the paper clip. I tried again with a new disc (the other one had finished). The process got to 63% and hung there for more than 1/2 hour. It never told me to insert another disc, although, after 2 hours or so it must be done. I will have to paper clip it again to get the disc out. I'm assuming i'm 2/3rds done with my back-up (i have a lot of photos).
Why does the program not say anything when it's hung up?

Backup And Restore - Win 7 Will Not Load Recovery From Disc

So yesterday i was on the computer and it just quit. Shut down and restarted without warning and flashed a blue screen with a sunshine ray type screen. Then i got a windows error recovery and i choose to start windows normally as this has never happened to me. When i choose that i got a blue screen that a problem was detected quoted stop: 0x0000007e. I managed to get into the advanced boot options but no option would work. It would only just recycle a restart. Then i would get the error in windows boot manager about 0xc0000428. Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. I have put in a recovery disc that was made and a genuine windows 7 disc and i get the option to boot from disc but it just takes me to the digital signature error.

I have pulled the hard drive out and put into an external case and hooked up to my laptop. Everything is still on my hard drive. I have ran the smart tests in the bios menu and they all passed. I have taken out the ram and put it back in. I do not get any beep codes or anything. I read on here to try the windows defender offline disc. I burned a disc off my laptop which is just a few weeks old and clean of malware and viruses. When i put disc in all i got was a the blue symbol (4 squares in a square) and it just sits and goes no where. Thinking there might be something wrong with the dvd drive itself i tried an external usb dvd with same results. I even made a copy on a flash drive with the same results except shortly after loading i now get an all blue screen that says recovery your pc needs to be repaired. An unexpected error has occured. Error code 0xc0000229 and so on with the f8 for startup settings or enter to try again. Well nothing happens when i choose f8 or press enter. I have to restart the system with a hard reboot to get anything to happen again.

I have also went into the bios and reloaded defaults. Not sure what else to do. I am not 100% tech savvy but i would say i have about 75% knowledge on the systems. Any help and guidance would be much appreciated. I have searched out the problem but cannot find anything else that repeats my problem. A lot of people are able to load from a disc but i cannot. Hp pavillion p6000 series, windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Upgrade Option Disc Is Not Working

I just started to install windows 7. I inserted the upgrade assistant disc and followed the directions. When it told me to eject the assistant and insert the operating system disc, i did, and again followed the directions. It said that i needed to complete the following task before the installation could continue. The task was to restart my computer so certain files could be changed.

It said to close out of the upgrade, restart my computer, then continue the upgrade. I closed out, took out the disc, restarted my computer, inserted the disc again, and nothing popped up like it did before. What's more, i can't find the disc under 'computer. ' what do i do to finish the installation and activate windows 7?

Sony Win 7 Upgrade Disc Did Not Come With Drivers

I received a sony windows 7 upgrade disc in mail, but it did not come with the companion disc for the drivers. Where can i order or download the missing companion disc. I sent in my laptop to sony to have windows 7 installed. Ive waited 3 weeks and still haven't gotten it back, and the technician is saying he does not have the companion disc available to install.

Ive talked to other technical support and apparently none of them carry the companion disc. Ive also placed another order with sony for the windows 7 upgrade, and again received the windows 7 without the companion disc.

Upgrade Disc Clean Install Problem

I have a computer that came with vista home and upgraded to windows 7. We ran into problems and was advised to do a clean installation. I did the clean install on a new hdd and cannot use the upgrade activation key code. Now what? I've already transfered all the data and cannot easily wipe the drive and reinstall vista to to do the upgrade. I have all the activation numbers from both vista and windows 7, can't i just talk to someone to get the correct activation numbers for this situation?

Backup Before Upgrade

I've got an hp - got the window 7 upgrade assistant disk from hp directly for purchasing the hp new from best buy before windows 7 came out. So - beginning to start the upgrade and it says in instructions specifically do not use windows complete pc backup program from the back up and restore center to create your personal date file backups. The program only allow complete computer image restoration, and windows 7 cannot access the stores data files. Great - so, ah, what the heck do i use to back up my computer? Please advise. Not wanting to spend any money on this - just want to back up files onto a cd.

Restoring Backup Of Upgrade Version

My new computer will ship with (oem) windows 7 home premium pre-installed. Thanks to my student status, i purchased a retail upgrade version of win 7 professional from microsoft at a great price. Once i've checked out my new pc to make sure the hardware works properly, i plan to use the win7 pro upgrade disc to do a custom ('clean') install.

I'm really good about backing up, so i plan to create an image of my new windows 7 professional installation, and to continue imaging my pc on a daily basis.

My first question is about restoring an image: in my case, the image contains an upgrade version of windows. Windows 7 setup does its compliance checking before you format the disc. How does 'uncle steve' know that i qualify to restore an upgrade version of windows, since i performed a custom installation of the upgrade?

My second question is more complicated: i qualify for an upgrade version of windows on the basis of my original oem license. An oem license can't be transferred to another computer, but i performed a custom install of the upgrade, so the original oem version is gone. Does this mean i can move my copy of windows 7 professional to a new computer?

Win 7 Virtual Xp Backup By Microsoft Backup & Restore

Windows 7 virtual xp backup by microsoft backup & restore - does it backup "both" c drives? I am running microsoft windows 7 professional with virtual windows xp. Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Dell Datasafe Local Backup Vs Windows Backup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows 7. One of the first things i did was configure all of my back-upsettings / schedule in windows. I used the recommended windows default settings in regards to what data is being backed up and set my back-up location to an attached external wd drive. All seems to be working fine. That said this machine also has dell factory installed back up software (dell datasafe local back-up) that does it's thing and backs up data to a partition on the "c" drive. My question is if i've set up windows to back up my data to an external drive do i even need the dell datasafe local back up program at all? The concern is this program is using space on my c drive and if the c drive were to crash having the back up info on it seems kind of pointless to me anyway.

Disc Replacement

When windows 7 first released, i purchased a digital copy from company called digital river through microsoft which was made for college students for $29. 99 (after providing my college information to verify i was a student). It was an upgrade version and i upgraded from windows vista business 64-bit to windows 7 professional 64-bit.

Well i would like to do a fresh install for windows 7, but i don't have a disc. I am posting here to ask if i qualify to purchase a disc replacement purchase or something of that sort or if i can even do a fresh install with my version of windows 7 because 1) i don't even know if it is possible with the version of windows 7 i purchased, or 2) if i am even able to get a disc for it.

In the past, my windows vista was also a digital purchase through my it class in high school. I was directed from the microsoft forums to a microsoft site where i could order a replacement windows vista disc for $10. I was just wondering if such a place existed for windows 7 discs. ?

Also if i am not allowed to purchase a new disc or even do a fresh install with the upgrade version of windows 7, can you recommend what i should do if i want a fresh install of windows 7?

Just as a note, the reason i am asking this is because my computer is performing very slowly and i am guessing it has to do with the upgrade since most of the time when installing an os, you are supposed to do it from scratch with a clean hdd and when i did my upgrade, it was on a half full probably fragmented hdd (since at the time of installation i hadn't run my weekly defragment yet). I know it isn't my computer itself because i exceed the requirements by a longshot (q9550, 4gb of ddr2 1000, gtx 260).

Recovery Of Disc Image

My desktop pc had a hard drive failure. Windows 7 home premium had been installed as an upgrade from win xp a couple of months ago. Here is my question - i have replaced the bad drive with the original drive still containing win xp. I can re-install win 7  home premium, but i also have a new and unused upgrade package of win 7 professional. Also, i have a disc image of my pre-crash win 7 home premium on an external hard drive. Which win 7 should i install (home premium or professional) and can i then recover the disc image, thereby saving the re-install of every program i had pre-crash?

Stick On Disc Labels

Are they really not a good thing? Do they add so much thickness to the disc that some players just can't handle the added thickness to make it work/play well in a car disc player or for that matter a home dvd/cd player? The labeled discs i speak of are completely without lumps/bubbles/and are perfectly centered/no overhang/etc. I do have and occasionally use lightscribe - but find they are hard to read. Overall. Are they not recommended because of the added thickness?

Install Disc Corrupt

I recently purchased an hp pavilion elite. It came with windows 7 home premium 64-bit. I wanted to scrap all the random stuff that hp puts on their computers, and i have a copy of windows 7 professional 64-bit anyways that i wanted to install.

So i booted from the disk, did a clean install, formatted the hd and hit continue like i have to done with clean installs with this same disc successfully 2 other times. It moved to the next screen, copied all the files to 100%, and "moved on to expanding windows files". Then it just sat at 0% for about 15 minutes, until giving me this error:

"Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart installation. Error code:0x80070017"

Does this mean there is something wrong with this disk? I was thinking of just going out and buying a new copy of windows 7, but i wanted to know that there wasn't another option.

Disc Read Error

So back when i was reppin' xp, i believe i had a disc read error that prevented my computer from functioning. Since i am not a computer whiz, my solution to the problem was to wait for windows 7 to come out, which came out about a week after i had the error. A quick fix.

So i managed to install windows 7 and salvage my computer, so to speak. After the installation, every time i booted up the computer, the computer did not take me straight to the log-in welcome screen. Instead i was confronted with 3 options; run xp, run windows 7, or run in safe mode, i believe. (I am not entirely sure of this because this screen no longer occurs, and i quickly adapted to scrolling down to the run windows 7 option instead of inventorying the options into my memory. ) So this sufficed, and i had no qualms with the odd starting screen because, _, the computer worked.

Fast forward a couple months and i was confronted with a bootmgr issue. Not knowing what that was, i looked it up and was able to get a program on a disc to help alleviate that issue. This allowed me to use my computer for 2-3 days, but with intermitten and gradually increasing computer "hiccups". What i mean by a hicuup is that my computer would freeze, in the begining for maybe a minute, and then it would unfreeze and i was allowed to use my computer again. These were not programs freezing, for my music would halt as well as the other program i was using at the time. After a time period elapsed (of my computer being frozen), my computer would spit static through the speakers and start playing again, with the song proceeded. So i missed part of the song, and i resumed doin' work.

As i mentioned before, the freezes progressively got worse. From 1 minute long freezes to 30 minute freezes, to freezes which i presumed were infinite. ( For the last freeze, i went downstairs and watched a movie, as a reference to how long the freeze could last. It was frozen when i returned). Eventually i was no longer able to even access my computer in a functioning state.

Going back to the bootmgr program i put on a disc, i was able to access a very limited program that frankly did nothing, which was probably due to my lack of computer competence. After a couple of days of trying to manage that, my computer failed to even load that program. Now i am confronted with this; a black screen, with or without the disc for the bootmgr, with a blinking cursor. After the cursor blinks a couple times, a disc read error text appears and offers me the option of restarting through ctrl alt delete. Restarting does nothing but further a cyclical response of disc read error.

What do yall think?

No Installation Disc For Win 7

I purchased a new toshiba laptop in malaysia last month and i did not receive with it any discs for windows7. It has a legitimate copy of windows. I am aware of the methods of restoring and reinstalling available without using a disc but am still a little concerned about the possible problems of not having one. Does windows7 always come with a disc or is it normal to buy a computer and not get one with it? I have not received a satisfactory answer from the dealer yet and i want to know where i stand before communicating with them further.

Error - Please Insert Disc In D Drive

Error: "please insert disc in d drive" when trying to copy some pictures onto a disc. Original title: reads some discs in cd drive but not others. I use my computer mostly for gaming, but he other day i needed to copy some pictures onto a disc. I put a cd-rw disc in my d drive and when trying to copy i got a message "please insert disc in d drive". I tried this with many discs with the same result. D drive will read my game discs and other discs that have pics on them. I even took my blank disc and put it in my laptop and my laptop said it was a blank disc like it should. What do i need to do?

Code 32 - Disc Drive Problem

I just entered a cd into my disc drive and noticed nothing was happening. So i went to manually click on the disc drive itself, and saw that it was completely gone. When going through the troubleshooting process in windows 7, this note came up:

A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32). Obviously i need to re-enable this service, but i am clueless as to which one or how to do so.

Easy Transfer & Disc Space

I just upgraded to windows 7 professional from vista home edition and was required to do a custom installation. Before installing, i moved the contents of the c drive to an external drive using windows easy transfer, as microsoft recommended. Now when i try to use easy transfer to move files back to the c drive, i get an error message that reads: " "there isn't enough  disc space available to transfer your files and settings. "

Easy transfer has 16. 3 gb to move, and the c drive reports having  203 gb available. The f drive has 231 gb available, and the d: recovery has 3. 05 gb available (out of 14. 6 gb). What's the problem with easy  transfer's moving these files back to c? More importantly, what's the solution?

Sudden Appearance Of Local Disc

Booted system up this morning and had a message from microsoft security essentials saying it could not scan for spyware. Looked in my computer and noticed that under c drive there appears to be a new drive that wasn't there previously and it's called local disc q. I did a right click on the q drive and looked into properties and there is no option to delete the drive. It doesn't allow me to view the security properties and says i need to have permission but it does not allow me to take ownership.

Copy Disc Using Dvd Maker

Ok. Every time i go to windows dvd maker and i try to copy a dvd i made i run into several probs. First, i  have to select "all the files" because nothing shows up under "media/video/picture files" in the d drive otherwise. After selecting everything from my dvd, some of the files still get rejected from being transferred anyway!. Then when i go to click "burn" and it says i need to put in a "blank disc" which i do. After it burns for a minute and gets to about 70% it says cannot burn anymore because of a "invalid pointer. " What is that? Can you not copy a disc using windows dvd maker? If so how?
