Avast Wont Finish Scanning Because It Found A Corrupt Folder

Avast wont finish scanning because it found this corrupt folder. After searching around on the kb i found that other people with problems with this folder were having trouble installing updates and i am as well. Yesterday, a notification that i'm not running genuine windows popped up which i'm assuming is related to this folder. My copy is genuine. I've searched on this folder and found one suggestion to copy it from a good pc. Is that okay? Is there a way to repair it with the system disc? Protection From .scr Files

I stupidly clicked on an unknown . Scr file. After several seconds, i received a windows message that the scr file "had stopped working". Nothing happened after that. As far as i can tell, nothing unusual is happening. I scanned the original . Scr file with avast (newest definitions) and it did not seem to be a virus. Would win 7 first ask me if i wanted to allow this file to make changes before it actually was executed (as win 7 does this with almost everything i tell it to do first)?

Error Codes & Corrupt Files

I am having problems with installing updates and software onto my laptop: -

Windows update, i get error code 80200053, microsoft security essentials updates, i get error code 0x80240022 (this is a new install but haven't been able to run as unable to update with any definitions) windows live messenger and mail installation, i get error code hr:0x8007000d

I restored my laptop to factory default but the problem hasn't been fixed. I am still having the same problems but also, i am unable to download programs like java or avg (before i tried mse), i get messages either relating to corrupt files or unknown publishers/certificates. I have been having these problems for over a week now, in fact both my laptop and my partners desktop are having the same problems.

Having spent hours searching these forums, i found another user who appears to be having the same problems as me and followed the solution provided i.e. Disk cleanup; sfc.exe and then checkdisk but the problems haven't been resolved. The log file from the sfc.exe suggested that some corrupted files couldn't be repaired and i have looked at the results but to be honest i haven't got a clue what to do about this. The checkdisk result came back clean though.

We have managed to obtain a copy of avg from a cd and run a full scan on both the laptop and desktop and no virus' were detected. The only items listed were tracking cookies which have been deleted or repaired and 2 items on my laptop advising broken digital certificates.

Can you please help me with this, i don't know what else to do to fix this problem?

Dvd Maker Avi Files Corrupt

I have just found out about windows dvd maker and decided to give it a go. I tried to insert a file and found out it wouldn't allow me to select an mp4 so i decided to render each scene of my dvd into avi format instead of mp4 but as soon as i try and select them i get this error message:

"0 files were successfully added. 1 file could not be added. The file c:usersedwarddesktopuntitled. Avi is not a supported file type and cannot be imported. "

I installed a codec to try and get it to work but previous to this it came up with a similar error saying that the file might be corrupt.

What can i do as its really annoying me :( i have rendered the video as a wmv and it works but it annoys me because it isn't as good quality as the avi that i rendered.

Drive Is Not Accessible - Permission To Use Network Resource

I have done a clean win 7 64 bit install on c drive on my pc that used to be xp. The hard drive has two partitions c drive and d drive. The win 7 pc also has two other hard drives installed each with a single partition (e drive and v drive). The hard drives are not raid configured. The e and v drives were not involved in the win7 installation and therefore still have their xp configuration.
Prior to installing win 7 all partitions on all hard drives on the pc were accessible on the three other xp machines on my "workgroup" home network.

On the win7 machine i can access all drives on all of the xp machines. On any of the xp machines i can access the e and v drives on the win7 machine. When i try to access the win7 c drive or d drive from any of the xp machines i get:

"Pcpc (x) drive is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource" where (x) is either c or d depending on what drive was accessed.

I have tried un-sharing and re-sharing the c and d drive. I have also compared the property settings between the c and d drives that i can't access with the e and v drives that are accessible. Those setting are the same. Please advise any thoughts on what can be done to render my c and d drives accessible on my network xp pcs.

Low Resource Antivirus, Internet & Malware Software

Need solution for high rated, low resource antivirus, internet & malware software for small business with server for approx. 6-8 workstations & 1 server? Anybody know of a good solid software program to purchase, low cost? I own a small business with about 6-8 workstations, some desktops, laptops and 1 dell server.

I've been hunting for security software (all in one hopefully) that does the job, low on resources and costs. Found some in reviews (ie. Norton - no way, trend micro, and a few others. I don't have a clue on what to look for or how one performs over another. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm a sitting duck currently naked in cyberspace with my new thinkpad laptop and windows 7.

How To Fix Microsoft Update?

From the help menu in windows live mail, i selected get updates, which connected me to the microsoft update web page. Can I Use Upgrade Disk To Fix A Virus?

I have a lenovo ideapad that runs windows vista home premium. The laptop came with the operating system already installed, so i do not have a clean disk. I have a really bad virus that keeps me from looking at my indexes, doing a system restore or a virus scan with kapersky to do any type of repair. The virus keeps anything related to flash, java, windows media, activex, etc. From running. If i purchase and install an upgrade disk of either windows vista home premium or windows 7 would it fix the problem?  Or, do i need to wipe the entire system and start over with a clean disk? Is there some something that can be done if the operating system is on the computer when it's purchased?

Fix For Winsxs Folder Size

I am considering using a 40 gb ssd in a small new win7 system. The only thing keeping me on the fence about this is that the winsxs folder may quickly cause the os to take up well over half the space, due to copying dlls and other files.

Note that i already understand the explanation for the existence of winsxs (whether or not it is a good implementation is not at issue in this post). So do not post links to general information about winsxs. I would like an answer to my questions. Here they are:

1. Is there any fix planned by microsoft for the extreme file size use in this folder, so that win7 will become a more suitable os for systems with "small" data storage (i.e. 60-80 gb or less)?  As of today, winxp actually seems far more suitable than win7 or vista for such "small" storage due to this bloat issue.

2. As i understand it, the total size reported to/by windows 7 for the winsxs folder is inaccurate, in that less physical space is actually being used (due to how file links are counted up, etc. ). Is this true? If so, is there any fix planned for this terrible bug that leaves a good portion of the disk idle and unusable?

How To Fix Partitions Deleted By Update?

The latest round of updates has wiped four partitions by changing the partition table on windows 7 professional 64-bit! Having been on holiday for three weeks with no net connection, i found a multitude of updates apparently needed when i got my laptop back home. Luckily for me, i downloaded my pictures from the laptop to the desktop machine before doing the updates. (The laptop is fully protected by mcafee, with no reported problems. )One of these has changed my partition table so that only the c: drive is available.

The rest of the [previously allocated space is now apparently 'free space' according to the disk management utility in windows 7 professional 64-bit. Nice one! I now don't have my programs, data, pictures or media partitions. Also, the registry is in a mess as it still thinks that all the programs installed into the programs partition are present, but can't find them as there is no partition! It seems i am left with an install from scratch to sort out the mess - unless someone out there knows better?

Bitlocker Message - Do You Want To Scan And Fix Drive

I'm using windows 7 ultimate 32 bit on a 3 drive desktop pc, using bitlocker to encrypt drives d and e. After several weeks without any issues i'm now finding that every time i unlock drive d after booting up i get a message saying there are disk errors and asking me whether i want to scan and fix drive d. Or continue without doing so. If i confirm a scan and fix, the pc will take about 90 minutes to complete the task but then report that no errors are to be found, yet the next time i reboot the machine, exactly the same message appears.

If i continue but ignore the 'error' there's no problem until a scheduled backup to drive e is due, which then fails, telling me it can't backup drive d because there are errors on it:( i've run registry mechanic to fix any registry errors but this hasn't eliminated the problem, and i'm now at a loss to know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions what steps to take to resolve this?

Upgrade Vs Clean Install Key Fix

I have a feeling this is just a rant that will fall on deaf ears, but i would hope that someone at microsoft sees this and realizes that windows 7 has not made things simpler. Just about every version of windows since 95 has allowed upgrades. Those discs would require the presence of a previous version before installing, or if installing a fresh version, would simply ask for a key or previous install disk.

I just spent the better part of a day wasting my time to install a fresh copy of 7 that i now can't legitimately activate because my copy is 'upgrade' despite the fact that i own windows vista. This is ridiculous. Is there anything i can do to get my install to ask for my underlying key? Maybe it's time to cut the cord and go to linux, or perhaps just switch to mac. At least they have a straight forward licensing policy that won't leave me hanging.

Fix Separate System And Boot Hard Drives

I recently purchased and installed a new hd for my system that was running windows 7. I had purchased the windows 7 digital download installer so i have no install/repair cds to work with. My goal is to replace the old hd with the new one such that the new hd serves as both the system and the boot drive and if i want to i can either remove the old hard drive entirely or wipe it and use it for back up storage.

After installing and formatting the new hd i performed a custom installation of windows 7 using my downloaded installer and selected the new drive as the drive to install windows. After the installation completed i checked the disk management and the old drive (c:) is designated as the system drive and the new drive (z:) is the boot drive. As it currently stands if i unplug the old drive (c:) the attempt to turn the system on it tries to boot from the cd (which i don't have) and windows 7 won't start.

Further it appears that both drives now have windows 7 installed and if i have both plugged in, upon startup it asks what software i would like to run "windows 7" or "windows 7, " after a 20 second countdown it starts up normally. This is more of an annoyance than a show stopper because it adds about 20 seconds every time i start the system.

Any ideas on how to fix the issue? I will try reinstalling windows 7. If that doesn't work my next thought is to burn the digital installer to a cd, unplug the old drive and when it prompts to load from cd to try the burned disk.

Fix Error 651 Problem With Raspppoe.sys File

I have error 651 problems. I have a gateway sx-2800-01 desktop. It came with windows vista premium and was later upgraded with a gateway disc to windows 7. I used an at&t dsl connection which worked fine. When i switched to my current time warner cable modem i have started receiving this error along with a dial up window which reads "dialing attempt 1 . Unable to establish a connection. I also get messages telling me the page i want is not available offline. These are all new problems.

I tried to rename file raspppoe.sys to raspppoe. Old as recommended and i get a window that tells me "file access denied" because i am not a "trusted installer". When i try to click on the link in part 2 of the fix. Shell. Windows.com/fileassoc/0409/xml/redir.asp?Ext=zip i got a web page not a download-able file. I tried searching the web and when i tried to download their fixes i got a high warning about the program. They seem like reputable sites. What can i do? Am i not understanding something about this problem? Why hasn't windows update fix this if microsoft is aware of the problem?

System Protection......

I posted this question in another forum and did not get a resolution response. So i am posting it in this forum hoping new people will read it and someone may have a fix.
Windows 7 home prem; 32bit
System protection is set to 4% of my c: drive which in my case max usage=23. 24gb. This process reserves 23. 24gb of hard drive space to save restore points. The issue is, the current usage  exceeds the max usage space. Right now my current usage is 27. 23gb. Almost 4 gb over the max.

No System Protection Configuration

My computer (only a few months old) has been acting kind of glitchy, and i wanted to perform a system restore to try and solve the problem. When i got to my sytem properties, and click the system protection tab, it tells me that system restore has been disabled by my system administrator. Problem is, i am my system administrator. My user accounts tells me so. To boot, i created another user account with administrator privileges, yet still cannot configure my system protection, and therefore can't perform a system restore.

I am at a loss. Nd just btw, in case someone can help me out with this without system restore (though i still want that situation remedied), some of the issues i have been having are: normal run-of-the-mill programs (ie, solitaire) not opening, despite my system resources being otherwise unoccupied; weird restarts where i'll manually restart, it crashes in the process, and then re-restarts and everything seems dandy; regular browsing links causing unwanted windows to open, but only to google analytics something or other, and then redirecting to yahoo, as well as certain websites lagging unendingly (in mozilla firefox only) due again to some sort of conflict with google analytics.

Virus Protection And Pornographic Emails

While on a blog, yahoo buzz, i was interrupted by big warning of a virus threat. It said i was infected. I followed the procedures to get rid of it. I paid 99. 00 for and installed what is called security tool. The debit showed on my acct. It also showed and international fee of a few bucks.
Since that time, i have been getting pornographic emails. Also, that very same virus threat came up again and took me on the same merry-go-round to buy protection. This time i just closed all the windows and ignored the warnings.

What has happened to my computer? Why am i getting these *** emails?

Data Execution Protection Crashes

I was having a problem with repetitive data execution protection crashes when i accessed certain pages - particularly when trying to read my optimum email with a browser. This occurred with both ie 8 and firefox. The last straw was when i tried to renew my subscription for my trend micro internet security. Their app for renewing a subscription automatically started ie 8, which would then trigger a "internet explorer has stopped working . Checking for a solution" window, followed by a "close program" window, followed by a message that data execution protection had been the cause of the stoppage.

However, ie 8 does not close - it just triggers another succession of "checking for a solution, " "close program, " "dep was the cause" messages until i manage to get ie8 to respond to its own close button (the red x in the urh corner). Based on another posting, i started ie 8 as administrator and turned off the dep function - now when i try to renew my subscription, i get a rapid series of "checking for a solution" and "close program" windows, but no dep message. I finally had to renew my subscription by telephone! What can be done to fix this?

Unable To Access Hard Drive Because Of Password Protection

Hard drive with "windows 7" from my laptop not showing up in my other xp machine. I connect the sata hard drive through a sata usb cable. My toshiba laptop has windows 7 in it with finger printing password. After scanning my finger or entering bios password my hard disk unlocks and i can use my laptop. Now that laptop is dead because if its motherboard. The hard disk is working fine. I purchased sata usb cable and attached the toshiba hard disk to my other system which has xp through the usb port. It shows that a new hardware is installed and is ready to use but it doesn't show up in my computer or disk management.

I guess i have to unlock (by using bios password) it first and then only will be able to use it but i don't see the hard disk anywhere then how would i enter the password? I don't think it's a cable problem because the hard drive is making sound like it is working and in the xp machine it shows that the hard drive is installed and ready to use. I really need to extract the data from my toshiba hard drive otherwise i am doomed.
