Installation In Multiple Systems

I have a total of 4 computers (2 desktops and 2 laptops) in my home belonging to myself and my brother. I want to purchase windows 7 ultimate and what i want to know is whether i can install it in all of my 4 computers, that is can i install it in more than one computer. Please understand that i am not talking about multiple users but multiple systems. Of course it will be used for only domestic purposes and not any commercial or business purpose. Would i face any problems if i try to install windows 7 ultimate in more than one system?

Multiple Hard Drive Pc Installation

Just a simple question! At the moment i'm running xp - which means i'll need to move all my data etc (i know all that business). However, i have 2 hard drives on my pc - one which i will use for the os - the other for my music/videos etc. When i upgrade to windows 7, should i physically remove the music/video hard-drive? Or will it be safe, as i will be installing the os on the other hard-drive? I don't want to lose the data on the music/video hard-drive. I hope that makes sense!

Run 2 Operating Systems

I have purchased a dell computer with the windows (r) 7 professional 64 bit operating system and now have found out that i can not run some programs because of the 64 bit. I believe i can run 2 operating systems by creating a partition on my hard drive. This i have managed to do. I had 3 primary partitions (oem, recovery and then the one with the operating system win7) i shrunk the os drive, created a new volume and thereby created a new partition (logical drive).

Now i believe i could just insert my xp disk that i had from previous computer and it should prompt me where i would like it to be installed and then i would have 2 operating systems to choose from every time that i start the computer! I am nervous to do that, as the microsoft help info says that it is important to install earlier versions first and that you could actually make the computer not work all together.

Am i understanding the microsoft info correctly?
How do i get around this?
Would purchasing a win7 32-bit and letting them run next to each other be an option?

Swapping Operating Systems

I purchased the windows 7 upgrade disk for home premium and upgraded my copy of vista on my desktop. My wife has a vista installation on her laptop. I was considering buying windows home professional but this would only be useful if it was on my desktop.

Would i be able to apply my already-used upgrade disk to her laptop?  It would be a shame to have to waste the upgrade disk i spent all that money on. In other words, did that update disk "bond" to the original vista installation i overrote on my desktop?

Shuttling Win7 Between Two Systems

I have two identical laptops at two different locations (identical meaning: same maker, same hw model, same amount of ram, etc. Some ids like cpu-id and network mac addresses are of course different).

To spare me the hassle of having to keep both systems in sync and having to re-install each and every sw twice for years i have been using an windows xp system, that i installed on a portable harddisk with these two systems, i.e. I shuttled the system disk between the two systems, booted from that hard disk and worked from it.

In short: i used a single windows license for both systems, but always on one system at a time only.

Apparently that setup does not work any more with windows 7. I installed and activated windows 7 on one system. Each time i attach the hd to the second system i get an alert, that i need to activate windows and when i enter the activation code it is refused.

What are my options? Will windows 7 accept that setup if i buy another win7 license and enter that on the second hw or will it then cease to work on the first computer? Or can i define two hw profiles (or whatever) that will allow me to switch between those two computers? Or are there win7 licenses that allow such hw changes without having to reactivate all the time?

The problem is not the licenses (i would be even willing to buy a second one, if that allows me to keep working in the described manner although i would definitely not find it fair, that i need two licenses, even though i always use one at a time only), but i want/need to save me the trouble of having to keep two systems up-to-date, identically configured and all my documents in sync. Because that effort was simply too much hassle and drove me nuts and made me come up with the scheme i described above.

Two Different Audio Systems At Same Time

Is it possible to play the audio from a movie on tv speakers and at the same time have a different audio playing on a headset (example, kids watching a movie (media player) as i listen to pandora on a headset)? And if it can be done, what would it take to do this using the same pc?

2 Operating Systems On One Hard Drive

I just downloaded windows 7 on my computer. I had windows vista and i had problems with vista, hence why i upgraded to windows 7. I guess something went wrong with the download because when i turn my computer, i have to pick which operating system i would like to use (vista or 7). When i went to re-install microsoft office into my computer, i got a notification that my hard drive was almost full (not even enough space to install office), and i would like to get rid of vista to clear all that hard drive space up again. Please let me know how to do this.

Rolling Back Operating Systems

I just discovered that by upgrading from vista to windows 7, i created a problem with my hp dv9000 laptop. So now if i want to ever be able to use wireless again i must uninstall windows 7 and go back to vista. Can anyone either provide me a way to roll back the os or to solve the problem without changing os. The problem is odd, i did the same thing to my work laptop and i am still able to use my wireless air card, and with my home laptop i am unable to get online with any wireless. It seems as if the system no longer searches for wireless connections, any feed back is most welcomed. Anyone with hp now know they refuse to develop drivers to support windows 7.

Use Easybcd 2.0 For Dual Boot Systems

My frustration with changing a xp / xp dual boot to a windows 7 / xp boot was solved in 30 seconds with easybcd 2. 0. Perhaps i missed the referemce to a specific level of easybcd? This is a beta version so one needs to register (it's free) at the neosmart site to do the download. This version supports an option, when you have pre vista os partitions, to automatically create the needed boot.ini and copy the required ntldr and ntdetect.com files to the root of the win 7 partition! Just say accept to the prompt offered.

So if you have dual boot issues my recommendation is to look on the neosmart site and forum areas and download the beta level.

Finally a happy camper you can now proceed to play with win 7 while still having my old xp friend around.

One Pc With Multiple Users

I have one pc with multiple users (with text-based passwords) oneguest account turned on (with a blank-password).

I want to share some files, some folders, and some libraries between different users but exclude guest users. I have not been able to do it with any of the share schemes that seem to always address computers on a network and not multiple users on a single pc.

What tools do i as the administrator use to share selected files, or selected folders, or selected libraries between selected user accounts on the same pc? Everything i tried in the "share" tools seem to fail for some reason that i cannot fathom. The entire set of files was copied over from a failed xp pc to a new windows 7 pc with specific files copied to non-public folders for specific users.

I know how to use the public libraries that all users can see, to include guest.

Multiple Taskbars

This isn't a question, but rather a suggestion for a possible improvement in one of the upcoming sps. It would be fantastic if windows 7 had multiple task bars. I, and many others, use multiple displays. It would be nice to be able to minimize and restore windows in the display they're currently resting in. Not to mention, the window shake thing is nice, but it would also be nice to just clear off the desktop of the active display instead of all the displays.

You know what i mean, windows team?  Make the displays more modular. I'm not complaining, just requesting a minor (to the end user) enhancement to the way the desktop(s) work.

Printer Sharing Among 32-bit And 64-bit Systems

I have upgraded to windows 7 32bit. When i installed vista, i first tried the 64bit version, but found i could not share my connected printer across the network with a 32bit system. I could not install 32 bit drivers on my 64 bit system to enable other work group members to use my printer, and of course, could not install 64 bit drivers on a 32 bit system. Now that i have upgraded to windows 7, will i face a similar issue if i install the 64 bit version?

Multiple Monitor Support

I really love windows 7's feature of being able to drag a window to the left or right top half and then the window resizing to that half side. However, with a dual monitor setup, this is impossible to do on the inside halfs of the monitors . I have 2 monitors 1 and 2. On the right half of 1 and left half of 2, i cannot drag and resize to those areas. I can on the left half of 1 and the right half of 2. The above is copied from another post that i could not reply too!  I am curious if there is a planned fix for this?

Problem In Multiple Monitor

I got a really strange problem. I tried few days ago to connect a multimedia projector to my laptop that was working on windows 7 but it showed the display on only the projector and not on my laptop. All attempts to detect external monitor or projector filed. Then i boot the pc again with the projector being plugged out and first tried to detect the projector/external monitor. But it resulted in a very strange thing. Now i cant see on my laptop if i run win 7 normally but under safe mode (and win xp) it shows display.

I can see win 7 display only (not on my laptop) if some external monitor or projector is connected. I tried to select the multiple display option but for me it results in nothing. Help me please and tell what exactly to do i really like this win 7 miss to use it on my laptop.

Multiple Instances Of A Printer

When i converted from vista to 7 a hp5l printer attached to lpt1 showed up as attach to lpt3. I have tried to do an add printer specifying lpt1 but it add an additional instance of the printer attached to lpt3. On a second attempt to ad  the printer it again creates an instance connected to lpt3.

From devices & printers only the 3rd instance appears as  hp5l (copy 2). I can delete the one labeled copy2 but the other two do not show. How can  i delete them and start  over. I know there ar still twom instance since adding an additional one always creates copy 2 and if i run belac advisor it shown two instances of hp5l connected to lpt3.

Support Multiple Monitor

One wonders if the lack of adequate multiple monitor support on vista will be rectified in windows 7? Additionally if the audio issues with recording aspects for professional musicians will mean we will still either have to keep xp on a separate computer or in dual boot mode? Any information from microsoft will be appreciated.

For example - i can play a dvd on xp and stretch it across 3 monitors, i can use cubase 2, 3, 4 and 5 on xp and have individual mixers, edits and vst's in separate windows. On vista the only version that does not crash at some point is cubase 5 studio. With games, on xp i can get them to stretch over 3 monitors. Vista hardly plays any game older than 18 months and won't stretch jack - xp's compatibility mode works much better. Will windows 7 enable this or do i have to use virtual pc xp? The only way i have managed to get wallpapers to stretch is with ultramon.

Yes i have a quad processor with 8 gb ram, 2 tb hdd space, 1gb nvidia graphics card and no issues with anything except the operating environment. And last microsoft - while it's only aesthetics, will the dreamscapes etc - aero - etc if desired by end users to have installed, be available as extra downloads for the non ram conservative users?

Multiple Printer Configurations

My hp laserjet p3005d (usb) had several different configurations in win xp. All were numbered such as "1 hp 3005 tray2 duplex" so that they could be called up with macros (winbatch) and also so that i didn't have to be reconfiguring the printer numerous times a day. In windows 7 i have not been able to install additional printers using the p3005 driver. I've tried downloading different drivers but win 7 eventually eliminates one of the configurations.

Multiple File Selection

I upgraded to win 7 and have had no problems with it until recently. I used to be able to select multiple files using.

Shift click
Control click
Check boxes
Drag window

In the usual manner. Unfortunately this is no longer working. It tries for a second or so and then de-selects the files itself !I have tried sfc /scan in an elevated command prompt with no errors returned. I have tried running a script called single-file-select which fixed this problem in vista (as posted on another forum). I have tried resetting the folder options to default. Unfortunately none of this has worked and i an tearing my hair out.

Multiple Audio Devices

Like many people, i have a television connected to my pc as a secondary monitor (extended desktop). My television is connected through the hdmi port on my video card, which includes high-def audio. I also have a pair of desktop speakers next to my primary monitor, which are connected via the analog line-out jack. I'm having trouble finding a satisfactory way to specify audio output to the correct pair of speakers for the display i'm using. I've set-up the volume control options to display both available devices, and they are both enabled.

Ideally, what i'd like is for any window placed on the extended desktop (tv) to automatically send audio to the television speakers, and for application windows on the primary monitor to send audio to the line out (desktop speakers). If it can't be done automatically, can i specify which audio device each window uses individually? Or, is it possible to have both devices playing simultaneously, with the option of muting one device or the other?

What i'd like to be able to do, for example, is watch a movie on my tv with sound through the television speakers, while my wife plays a game or surfs the web using the desktop monitor with her audio routed through the desktop speakers. If this cannot be done through windows 7, is it likely that audio or video drivers would have this feature? Is there third-party software or hardware that can do this?

System info:

Pc - dell inspiron 580
Os - windows 7 home premium
Video  - nvidia geforce gt 220
Audio -    realtek high definition audio

Multiple Os Install For An Application

I have & need multiple installations (xp/vista/win7, etc). I often have a program/package (e.g office 1993/office 2007) which needs to be installed on multiple oses. I know that i can use virtual pc to install everything in a virtual installation, but is it possible to use another drive (for example an external drive visible to all oses) to install the program just once (one installation instead of one per os, thus saving space). Obviously the registry would be held locally for each os installation, but does the physical installation need to be too? How is this affected by the program data folder in vista/win7?

Multiple User Profiles

There are multiple user profiles under the user file on the hard drive: administrator, public, steve, steve_2 and steve_2. Steve_laptop.

There is nothing in the pictures, documents and video files under steve.

There are music and documents, but no pictures under steve_2.

There are music, pictures and documents under steve_2. Steve_laptop.

There are also two listings under homegroup - both listed as: steve (steve_laptop).

Not sure what i did for this to happen, but i'd appreciate any help to clean up this apparent mess.

Renaming Multiple Files

I have a couple hundred pictures from my web cam that i was trying to upload onto a website but i want to upload them by order of date and the way they are named when they were created doesn't go alphabetically. So instead of uploading picture1, picture2, picture3, etc it uploads as picture1, picture 10, picture 100, etc. The batch rename on windows 7 renames them in the same 1, 2, 3 fashion. I would like to rename them as 001, 002, 003, etc. Is there any way i can do this all at once or even manually without having to right click each file and selecting rename?

How To Display Multiple Tabs?

When i'm in ie and open a webpage, it loads to the first tab on the left side right below the tool bar. Id i go to my favorites and open another website, the first tab is now the second website instead of just creating another tab so i can switch back and forth between the two (or more) websites. The only way i found to get more than one tab is to do a ctl+t and then i get a "what do you want to do next?" Box. Is there a setting that i can change so that the second, or more, websites automatically open into a separate tab?
