Changing Security Policies At Root Not Working

I have recently upgraded from vista ultimate 64 to windows pro 7 64. I have several systems behind my firewall. The issue that i am experiencing is when i goto the properties, then securities on any of my 1 tb hd's and try and change policies at the root level. When i apply i receive error message that denies certain root directory system files as well as some directories structures. No problem with hardware because i was effectively doing this on vista machine with no issues. Is there a work around?

Security Issue With Sharing Root Drive Letters

I use the wifi ability of my lg ally smartphone to access lan shares with estrong file explorer. When i built a new pc which runs windows 7 home premium os, i shared a couple folders and tested to make sure i can access them from my phone. What i saw was unbelievable.

According to any information i have been able to find about sharing files and folders in windows 7, it is supposed to be impossible to share a "root drive" (the entire drive content, like "c:" and all its sub-folders) in windows 7. You can share a folder, but not a whole drive. Well, estrong file explorer, running in lan access mode by wifi here, is showing me all the drive letters (i have several) of my windows pc, and their sub-folder content on the screen of the ally phone! Even my other cat5 connected pcs can only see the folders i have set for sharing on the win7 pc. I am only stopped from accessing a few folders on the win7 computer's c drive. Aside from that, i can access every drive letter and all of their folders and files, even though i do not have shared folders on most of those drives.

Of course i do not have any of the root drive letters shared because windows 7 won't even let me attempt to do that. I can't explain how this is working, but it seems like something microsoft would want to look into. I can repeat this action any time i want. I did have to create a user account for the phone to even get into the win 7 pc via wifi, but with that information the phone seems to have full access to the entire pc.

Unable To Locate Files After Changing Security Settings

Thought i changed security setting for file, but instead, all files gone. No error messages, but after having "fiddled" with a parameter in file security, the system seems to have altered my administrator profile. It appear as if the underlying file structure/names have been altered, so that previous i had c:usersole, and so on, now i have c:ole. And so on. This means that all my files are out of reach.

However, by starting an old application program from the installed program directory, that program still retains and can access earlier file kept as "recent" file in that application. I cannot copy these files to my new directory structure, as the application will tell me, that the directory (new) stated is not accessible. It appears that my earlier underlying file structure was parsed to eliminate the "user" folder, how can i get it back?

Root Certificate Update Not Working

At some point my computer (windows 7 enterprise, joined to domain) lost the oids of ev certificates. The problem got fixed with custom import of certificates in the local trusted root certification authorities store. After digging into the problem, it turned out that upon unknown certificate met on the web windows does not activate the root certificate update functionality - no certificate call is made (no events from capi2 in the event viewer) and as a result microsoft trusted certificates are not added automatically to the system.

My question is - which group policy setting to tweak, so that the root certificate auto-update works? I have checked the resultant set of policy snap-in and i see no custom setting for internet communications settings -> turn off automatic root certificates update. In gpedit it is set to not configured. But the local user has active computer configuration -> windows settings -> public key policies domain imposed settings applied. Which of these might be the problem?

Is it something in certificate path validation setting? I have readhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731638.aspx but it is still not very clear. In the certificate path validation i have the following:stores tab - all recommended are checked, except for root certificate stores where only enterprise root cas.network retrieval - all options are on it is worth noting that once added in the local machine, and trusted root certificate works just fine.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749331(ws. 10).aspx was not of much use, too.

Can't Access Root Folder Nas Drive

Since i upgraded from vista to windows 7 i can't access my root folder on my network drive (nas) anymore. In vista when i choose network it displayed me all networks including my nas drive, there i could select it and it would forward me to the nas root. In windows 7 it doesn't show me to nas and if i tell to go to root likezelst it will give me a permission / access error. The only way for me is to map a sub-folder on the nas directly likezelstfolder1 etc. I wanna know if i can make windows 7 show me my nas drive again and being able to access it's root folder.

Windows Security Versus Norton Security

I have just taken for granted that i need a separate security company, because every time i purchase a computer, "norton" came with the included software. My question is; is windows defender and ms security sufficient security for a home computer?

Changing Keyboard

I have a laptop with a japanese keyboard. I am running an english os. I have gone to control panel. I clicked the change keyboard. I added languages so that i have both english and japanese and both languages keyboard options installed. The ime too. When i press alt and shift, the language bar does change between en and jp. The language bar also indicates that the keyboard has changed too.

However, even when the language bar says the language is japanese and that the keyboard is japanese, the pc still types as if configured for an english keyboard. I have also tried typing with the default input language set as japanese, and then tried it set as english.

Does anyone know why, despite following all the steps; despite having text services and input languages indicating that under installed services that english and japanese input devices have been added (and yes, i pressed apply); and despite having a language bar that does switch between english and japanese when alt+shift is pressed, that nothing changes and the key board still behaves as an english (us) keyboard?

Changing Activation

I recently purchased windows 7 ultimate x64 about a month or two ago. Since then my old pc bit the dust and i just built a new one and naturally i used the same windows disc (why wouldn't i, i spent 200$ on it and only got to use it for a little over a month). Anyways my question is, is it possible to switch my activation key over to this computer or whatever?

The other pc is no longer in operation and it doesn't seem fair that i would have to buy a new operating system, i paid alot of  money for it, and i have barely used it. I have spent all day trying to find a phone number to contact microsoft but i haven't been able to find one.

Translucent Taskbar Changing

I restarted my computer today and two effects came into place (i have no idea why).

1. My taskbar, which used to be translucent, is now blue.

2. When i hold my cursor above icons in the taskbar it just shoes me their names. It used to show me a mini-picture of the page. If i had a video it even showed it running.

I have tried changing it back but i have no idea where to. Checked all of my definition menus and windows 7 help. This is getting on my nerves a bit!

Changing Name Of A Hidden Folder

Tivo tech support gave this response to a problem with tivo desktop. I am wondering if there would be additional problems in changing the name of a hidden folder. Following is tivo's answer:got the fix today from tivo !

Had the "tivo desktop cannot find file specified" problem today for the first time since upgrading to windows 7. Great tech support guy at tivo suggested the following. It worked perfectly.

Easy quick fix -

Click start in windows 7, then at the top right click the user name. Then click on the folder called "app data". ( Note - i did not see this folder at first - you have to go to control panel and make sure hidden folders are displayed. )  After clicking on "app data", then click on 'local". Once there, probably towards the end of the folder list you will see a folder
Called virtualstore.

This is the fix - just change the name "virtualstore" to "windows_save".

With the tech guy on the phone, i did the ctrl-al-delete process to kill all tivo related processes, and then restarted the tivo desktop server. (You could do a complete computer restart if this is confusing.

Backups To Changing Locations

I'm backing up to external usb hdds using the windows utility. I plug the hdd in and out just for backups and it can be assigned a different location by windows (drive letter eg. I:, j: etc) from the last backup. I can change to the new location with "change settings" but windows wants to do another backup as well to the "new" location.

Question: what do i do to tell windows to default to a new drive letter so that i can use the "manage space" function without forcing another backup? I'd rather not permanently assign drive letters to the removable hdds partitions.

Changing Bios Settings

I have a custom built computer that has been running the windows 7 release candidate. I've been trying to install the full version but have not successfully been able to boot from the cd/dvd drive. There are two options to prompt the screen before windows starts either press delete for bios settings or f12 for boot menu. First off, i'm not sure which one i'm supposed to so i tried both. When i went to the boot menu the screen was frozen and i could not select the boot first device. What am i doing wrong?

Problem Changing Resolution

On my previous 8. 9" netbook running winxp, i was able to set a higher resolution than the monitor supported, by checking the box to "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" in the monitor tab in the advanced display properties. I need to do this in order to run a program that otherwise does not start.

I have now a new 10. 1" netbook running win7 starter and the maximum resolution i can select is 1024x600 and the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" is grayed out. I am lost, any suggestions? Both netbooks have pnp monitors and intel  945 express chipset family, yet the one with xp allowed me to do the change. Is this an issue with win7 ? If so can it be fixed?

Win 7 Keeps Changing Time

And that screws up my tv watching and recording. It's very annoying. I've seen the problem here with vista (though my husband's laptop with vista never does it) and the only answer relates to the time changing on boot and having to do with the bios.

Well, my dell computer with windows 7 will change time even when it's left on and i checked the bios. The bios has the right time. When i noticed it tonight (it didn't record survivor), win7 said it was 3am. It was 9:15pm. I shut down the computer and checked the bios: 9:15pm.

I've even set this to automatically update every 4 hours. How did it get to be 3am? Will there be a patch for this win7 problem? I've tried turning off autosync, changing servers. And for awhile it stayed solid but then changed again!

Changing Computer Or Motherboard

I get a new computer, or at least get what is effectively (motherboard, ram, cpu, hdd) a new computer every 4 years. Can i reinstall my copy of windows 7 on a formated drive in a new computer, and then have it not installed on my old one? Can i switch which computer it is installed on? It is still only one copy in use on one computer at any given time. Is it as simple as reactivating it or will red flags go up if the differences between the two computers is too great. i.e. New memory: no need for reactivation; new memory and hdd: need reactivation; new ram, hdd, cpu, and motherboard: will not allow reactivation?

Wei - Index Keeps On Changing

My pc configuration is:os : windows 7 ultimate 32 bit processor :pentium d 2. 66ghz (intel pentium d 805)ram : 3gb ddr2 667mhzhd : western digital 80 gb motherboard : gigabyte 945 . Graphics : intel gma 950bios setting: intel thermal management enabled.country: india season: summer, average maximum temperature : 48 celsius

My problem is that my windows 7 experience index(wei) keeps on changing. It changes every time i refresh it. I am unable to understand the cause of this problem because i have not changed any of my hardware configuration. Neither have i installed any software. The typical wei fluctuating ratings are processor rating from 2. 1 - 2. 2 -4 - 4. 2 graphics rating from : 2. 1 -2. 3- 2. 8i would like to mention the cpu temperature in bios remains at a average from 70 celsius to 90 c in winter and summers alike.

Also there are some small black spots on the processor pins and the motherboard socket pins. I am aware the cpu thermal management reduces the processor performance , but the wei rating fluctuates far to often. The above reasons result in sluggish performance of the system sometimes and cpu usage going to as high as 90% for simple tasks. Ie copy -paste, printing etc. I have tried changing hardisk , but the performance remains same. This also eliminates any chances of virus.

Screen Resolution Changing Randomly

Just purchased a new pc running windows 7 which occasionally, when i turn my pc on, the desktop icons have moved & are of a different size & poorer clarity. When i look into the screen resolution on such occasions, it seems the pc has not recognized the brand of my monitor & refers to it as 'generic' & the recommended screen resolution (1680x1050) is not on the drop-down list of available screen resolutions. Restarting the pc does not fix the problem. But then i'll restart the pc hours/days later, & everything is back to normal. Becoming a real nuisance. Any ideas?

Problem Changing Desktop Display

I can't change the desktop display in windows 7 - i have previously been successful in changing the display from the 'windows set-up pic' to my own set of pictures but even though the control panel - change the display background - and all the pictures are ticked, all i have is the same windows pic! Grrr i have saved these pics in my pictures/display and then browse for them in the above control panel display feature. I have recently re-loaded windows 7 so that i could partition my hard drive to keep all data on a separate drive to the programs but have saved the pictures on the program drive (c). Does anyone have a solution to this - all i can think to do is use the windows 7 disc to repair or re-load!

Shortcut Keys Changing Keyboard Language

Concerning short cut keys (ctrl + shift) changing keyboard language setting and changing the short cut key. For all the windows versions i worked with there is one short cut key set which has annoyed the out of me. Being ctrl + shift. Why? Simply because it changes the language setting of my keyboard from the used (us/international ) to the near non-existent (dutch ) and of course back if i accidentally hit it again.

In the netherlands, us/international is the standard keyboard format, yet all the version of windows have supplied us with a dutch keyboard setting (which is totally different, and jumbles up you key bindings big time)! This dutch keyboard however does not exist or is extremely rare, and it's a mystery to me why it is still existent.

To change the keyboard settings however there is the above mentioned short-cut combo (ctrl+shift) which is easy to hit accidentally. I want to get rid of the short cut key combination to prevent the constant frustration of discovering i accidentally changed the settings.

Is that possible? If so, how?
