Ie8 Favorites Do Not Work

I have the following problems with favorites in ie8:

Adding a favorite creates it twice (once with the url as name, once with the page title as name)
Clicking on any favorite in ie does nothing (no error, no feedback)

Favorites can be deleted without problem
Opening the url file in explorer opens a print window (the print is empty)
Reinstalling ie8 had no effect and no spyware was detected by multiple scanners

Anybody have any clue what could be the cause of this?

Favorites Not Working In Ie8

I have an hp pavillion running vista. Recently the "favorites" feature stopped working. All my bookmarks are still listed but they do not work (and the little icons before the text are now just empty boxes). If i try and add a favorite, it won't be added. I have not added any new programs that i am aware of. Favorites just suddenly stopped working. The favorites folder still exists in my users directory. The registry address is %userprofile%. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled ie 8. I have reset it. I have run it without add ons. I have scanned the computer for viruses using norton 360. Nothing has worked.

Cannot Delete Folders In Ie8 Favorites

I have a new hp pavilion desktop (6gb ram, 1tb hd) which came loaded w/ windows 7 and ie8, version 8. 0. 7600. 16385, 64 bit edition. I'm trying to clear all folders and favorites from favorites so that i can import a fresh set from another browser. All went well until the last few folders. When i try to delete these, i get the following message: "could not find this item. This is no longer located in c:usersferdfavorites. Verify the item's location and try again. " This is followed by the name of the folder and the date created.

I followed all of the steps, including those in the link to the microsoft kb article, in the moderator's reply to w mayberry's post of february 20, 2010, "i've been having a problem organizing my favorites file" because it seemed like a similar problem. However, none of those steps have worked for me.

Just to make things more interesting, i got the following error message in trying to delete one of the folders (unsorted bookmarks): "an unexpected error is keeping you from deleting the folder. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem. Error 0x80070091: the directory is not empty" i searched on this forum for this error code, but got "no results found". I have no other problems with ie8. It works fine. This issue is more of an annoyance.

History And Favorites Disappeared From Ie8

For no reason that i can fathom, ie8 has stopped displaying a short list of history and favorites in the drop-down address bar. Before today it would have a short list of 12 recent sites that i've visited, then a favorites heading and 5 sites from my favorites with an option to expand to more, then the history heading with 5 sites and the option to expand the list. Now i just get the 12 recent sites with no history or favorites headings at all.

I have tried unchecking the auto-complete options, closing the browser, restarting the computer, restarting ie8 and rechecking them (including favorites and history) and i just get the same result. I also ran ie8 without addons and confirmed that this is happening without an addon causing the problem. I liked being able to quickly click on one of my favorites from the drop-down menu (i kept my top 5 at the top of the list and so they were easily accessible), and i'd like to get this functionality back.

Will i have to completely reinstall ie8 in order to do so? As far as i'm aware nothing has changed on my computer between last night and today to have caused this. I think adobe updated, but as i mentioned i ran ie8 without any adobe addons and it still had the same issue.

Ie8 Won't Let Me Add New Favorites

I have ie 8 running on vista (w sp2) on a dell xps laptop. Just recently i found that i cannot add new favorites either to the favorites menu or the favorites toolbar. I can drag a link to the desktop and it will stick there, but after dragging one to the favorites toolbar, i can watch while the new link simply disappears. Likewise, when i click "add to favorites" on the menu, all the actions will take place, even to the new favorite appearing on the menu for a second but then it vanishes. There are no error messages when any of this happens. My old favorites are still there on the bar and the menu and work fine.

I have not been able to find anything about this problem elsewhere. I imagine it is a problem with a setting but i can't imagine which one. I have delete a lot of items from my favorites folder thinking it might be a storage problem but that was no help.

Ie8 Link With Target Not Work

I have windows 7 running ie8. After i installed some software, some links in web pages are no longer working. I notice that those "a"links have a "target" with something like "_blank", which would open a new ie window or a tab. Basically, the phenomenon is, when i click that link, a new tab is created with caption "connecting to ". The tab is always empty, and the address box shows the url of the original page.

However, for those links which open the web page in the same ie window, seem working fine. I would like to repair the ie8 or windows 7. But i don’t know how. It’s greatly appreciated if someone can provide some solution.

Igoogle Doesn't Work With Ie8

Ie will not open my igoogle home page correctly. Using firefox when i sign into igoogle i get the igoogle page that i have created. When using ie 8 i get a igoogle page but it is not the one that i have set up with my g mail address, it does have some of the igoogle things just not any that i have added. I never had this problem with ie 7. When i installed win 7 about a week or so ago i don't believe i had this problem, if i did something i can't figure out what it is. I do get bing and msn ok just not the igoogle home page i set up with the gadgets i put on that home page.

In addition on ie 8 it shows the sing in but will not let me sign out and doesn't show my google e mail id. When i click on that sign in it doesn't go anywhere, do anything like go to the igoogle sing in as it should. I just reset ie for the 2nd or 3rd time and tried to sign in to igoogle and i got a page that is somewhat like igoogle but isn't my page. I have 3 g mail addresses and i can sign in using firefox with all 3 and they display the igoogle home page correctly.

In addition ie 8 is a hog, slow and who knows what else but at times i need a separate browser and i paid for it and since it can not be deleted from win7 and i'm a stickler for getting what i paid for. In addition i cant install ie7 as it says that ie 7 is not supported on this system. I can't download a new copy of ie 8 as it says i already have it.

Ie8 Sort By Name Doesn't Work

I keep getting surprised about how the functionality of microsoft software keeps declining. Windows media player keeps getting worse with each version, and now ie8. I barely use it because i'm almost exclusively a firefox user, but firefox fails in scrolling some pages smoothly when zoomed in, and ie8 is better at that. So sometimes i use it only for that purpose, but now having re-installed windows 7 from scratch and having imported the bookmarks from firefox, i realize that in ie8 the "sort by name" functionality in favorites is broken.

When it imported the bookmarks from firefox, it placed all the bookmarks from firefox's bookmark bar into ie8's favorites bar, which is great, except that it placed them in reverse alphabetical order! Are you freaking kidding me? So i think, ok, this is really stupid, a multi-billion dollar corporation didn't have one person in the internet explorer team that saw this? But well, i figured i would just go to the favorites side bar, or the organize favorites box, right click on the "favorites bar" folder, and choose "sort by name". It doesn't work! It simply doesn't work.

It does nothing at all. And it doesn't work on the other folders in the favorites tree. And this is not an old, corrupted installation of windows, it's brand new from two days ago, from a reformatted hard drive, and it barely has any programs in it except for drivers. This is just pathetic, "sort by name" has been on ie since version 4 or 5, and now they took it away, but they are so lazy that they forgot to take it out of the context menu. Dded to this, ie is really ugly on the eyes, with that hideous baby blue color all over the interface, especially on the toolbars and tabs. Firefox at least has the anycolor and personas plugins to bring some decent visual taste to it.

Automatic Image Resizing Doesn't Work In Ie8

When i open an image in internet explorer, if it's larger than the window, it doesn't resize to fit the window. I've tried setting, unsetting and resetting the 'enable automatic image resizing' checkbox in internet options/advanced/multimedia , and it just doesn't work. This doesn't work, in two separate windows 7 machines, one of them an upgrade from xp, one of them a new windows 7 professional 64bit out of the box, so i don't think it's a hangover from an upgrade setting. Any clues on what else i need to do to make image resizing work in windows 7?

Favorites Adding

Before i downloaded this new version i was very content with the fact that next to my favorites star button another star button with a plus for easy adding without having to open the annoying favorites menu for adding. Giving that option back to us, well me since i loved the option so much, would be absolutely great. And no i don't like that new option that goes with the star button that has the arrow, hate it. I would like to put the adding favorites button back into my toolbar, not going to the menu.

I have tried to restore ie default settings, i resorted back to ie7, i reloaded ie8. I have exported the links (all look fine on export) i have deleted all of them, i re-loaded them and no luck. I click on them, select the arrow to the right, and nothing.

Favorites Missing

Over the last 2-3 weeks all the links within ie8 favorites have disappeared. In fact when first clicking on favorites the following error message appears:

"Location is not available - c:users*name*musicfavoritesfavorites refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be in a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet on your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been move to a different location"

Subsequent clicking on favorites within ie8 then just comes up completely blank. I can find all the links within a favorites folder in the music folder location. I don't know why the favorites have been moved and how to rectify this. Any advice would be appreciated.

The problem is on a laptop running windows vista home premium service pack 2.

Favorites Icons (favicons)

For each saved favorite in the drop down, a right-click to properties, then change icon, goes to a file containing only five preloaded generic other icons to choose from. Location: c:windowssystem32url.dll

So i want to design my own icons and tag them to various favorites (also perhaps on desktop). I also want to store them somewhere (if possible, add them to the same preloaded "library" at c:windowssystem32url.dll).

Can i do this? How?

Where Are Email And Favorites Stored?

My new computer crashed and is being replaced. I dumped the contents of the original hard drive to an external drive so i can retrieve some contents. I wish to retrieve my email contact list, my emails - in all their different folders, my internet websites and cookies which has all my logins and such. I wasn't able to do an easy transfer under the circumstances. Is it possible to locate these files and just copy them to the new setup? I would hate to loose all this information.

Saving Of Favorites Problem

In win 7-64, ie8, everytime i save a favorite, it saves two lines to the folder. One entry is the name i gave it. That entry will not open the site. The second entry is the complete link  it does open the site. For example:

Saved the following with the name i gave it:
Kitchen cabinet finishing

The second line, never adjacent to the first saved line was:
Kitchen-cabinets-and-hardware.com-kitchen-cabinet-finishing.html

The entry of the name i gave it is useless.

How can i solve this problem?

Import Favorites Lost Their Icons

I recently installed a new workstation running windows xp sp3 and ie7 (as was my previous workstation1). Can't go to ie8 because it is not certified to run with my company's enterprise software.

I exported my ie favorites from the old pc and then imported them on the new one; all the icons for my favorite sites have changed to generic ones. Why did the icons disappear and how can i get them back to stay? I have visited some of the sites and sometimes the icon comes back and other times it doesn't. Also, the icons don't always remain. Sometimes, for no apparent reason when i launch ie, some of them are back to generic again.

Change Width Of Favorites Toolbar

When i open my favorites toolbar, it appear on the left side of my screen (where it should), but only as a narrow sliver. When i drag my cursor over the right edge of the favorites tool bar i do get a double-headed arrow, but it wont let me drag the favorites window to give a wider column-width.

Also, when i try to 'click' the double-arrow on the toolbar's right edge, the right edge of the toolbar disappears and/or shifts to the left edge of the explores window (so i'm not sure if i'm actually selecting or 'clicking' on anything) - when i let go of the mouse button, the right edge of the favorites toolbar returns to its too-narrow config. Any suggestions? I'm also not sure how/why my favorites toolbar shrank to its present too-narrow column-width (i don't think i set it that narrow - if i need it that narrow, i just turn it off)

Office 2010 Favorites Feature

I'm looking for a couple features in office 2010 (just upgraded from office 2003). The first features is saving favorites from excel and word. In 2003 i would save a file link from the network or my hard drive as a favorite in internet explorer. Thus clicking the favorite in i.e. Would open the excel or word file on the network drive. The second feature i'm looking for is how to modify and save an attachment from an email without sending it or doing a save as to the hard drive. In 2003 you could open a file and it save it without having to do a save as. Hopefully this makes sense. Am running windows 7 pro 32bit on a new system.

Delete Favorites Bar Folder

How do i delete the favorites bar folder? I'm trying to delete the 'favorites bar' folder from my bookmarks list in internet explorer 8, as it is redundant. I do not currently, and will never use it, and i also do not want it there. However, every time i delete it, it comes back a few minutes later. I've disabled the favorites bar via group policy editor, and i've tried a suggestion i found of setting the corresponding folder to hidden via windows explorer, then deleting the folder from my bookmarks, but it reappears a few minutes later. Is there any way of getting rid of this folder permanently?

Favorites Doesn't Display Items In Folder

Every so often, for no reason i can determine, ie8 refuses to display the bookmarks inside one or more - but not all - of the folders under favorites. Usually it is a folder i have recently selected a bookmark from, but not always. To fix this, i need to log out of ie8 completely and then reopen it. I can also double-click on the folder name under favorites, which will open a display box and i can select the bookmark i want from there. Any idea what causes this problem and how to remedy it?

Win 7 64-bit Doesn't Distinguish Between Ie8 64-bit And Ie8 32-bit

Windows 7 64bit doesn't distinguish between ie8 64 bit and ie8 32 bit when attempting to set a default browser using the control panel default programs 'associate' utility. My new windows 7 64 bit pc (luv that i7 920 intel cpu) came installed with both ie8-64 bit and ie8-32 bit (nothing more need be said regarding the absurdity of having to deal with this in the first place - i should have gone with the imac).

Anyway, ie64 bit lacks the flash player cuz adobe hasn't released a 64 bit version yet, per their website. So i can't use ie64 with xm online music stream (et al). Ie32, on the other hand, supports flash player, but won't successfully link to various embedded hypertext links, such as those embedded in an email. My initial solution was to use firefox, which served me well until an application from a local vendor will only work with internet explorer. Sigh.

I've used windows since version 2 back in the 1980s, have become stoic, and can emotionally cope with having to use 3 browsers to get the job done.

However, just for fun, my current burning question is, with two different versions of ie8 (64 bit and 32 bit) installed into windows 7, why doesn't the control panel default applications utility seem to aware of the fact that there are indeed two different versions installed? It lists firefox and internet explorer, but does not differentiate between the two flavors of ie. My goal was to set ie8 64 bit as the default browser temporarily to accommodate the vendor's application.

Fyi, by setting the default, i refer to: control panel | default programs | associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scroll down to 'http' and click on the change program button. So in my case, firefox and only one instance of internet explorer, with no bit distinction, display as selection options.

Flashing When Use Ie8

There appears to be some instability with ie8 when i browse since i have loaded windows 7 rc. I also think that the problem may have started when i did a deletion of temp files and old vista files. I really love the new windows 7 rc so far especially compared to windows vista ultimate. Also, what is available for the new windows touch as far a hardware and will i need anything else to accompany it that is not included in windows 7 rc? My computer is a dell lattitude 131l with a athelon 64 bit processor.

What is the real differences or advantages with the 32 bit and the processors and the 64 bit processor? Which should i really use? I have both rc copies on separate disks with their product key so either one can be installed.

Ie8 Not Working

Until friday night ie8 was fine. Now it won't do anything. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, spybot scanned, ccleaned, uninstalled, reinstalled, followed numerous links to different 'help' pages on microsoft, tried a one care scan (but that won't work because my other browser is chrome). I can't do that run ie no add ons thing because it isn't there to click. I did get to the "cannot display this page. " Once in safe mode but that's all.

There is nothing wrong with my connection on virgin cable because every other program requiring internet works fine. I don't use any third party toolbars because my netbook screen would be impossible to use (it's hard enough now). Desperate for a solution as work on my websites is stacking up and i need to get into office live to update.
