Can Update Patches Affect Bios?

Can the windows update patches effect the bios? I had a discussion about testing patches against different platforms yesterday. My stance was that software updates/patches have nothing to do with hardware on any given machine. The response i got was well each platform has a different bios and software updates can be affected by the bios. I have never experienced any kind of relationship between a os, application software , etc. And the bios. M i correct in saying that software updates have nothing to do with the bios of the machine unless that update is specifically a bios software update?

Problems Updating Bios After Update

Yesterday i went to the amd site to download the latest bios. I installed sp3 for windows xp and got the bsod but no specifics, just four error codes after the 0x0000007e stop. The bios saved as a winzip, and when i opened it, it was set as a vlc media player file, which seemed wrong, and as a text file, which seemed wrong. Earlier i had been able to open it, and run it, but then it said i had to shut down to get it to activate. So when i said shut down, the system said, hold on, it's not finished and if you shut down now, you could lose files. So i waited, nothing happened.

So i did it again and it said do you want to uninstall it, suggesting it was installed already.
If it was installed, it clearly had no affect on my bsod problem. I can only boot in safe modes since i upgraded to sp3. And one issue it said could be the problem is an out of date bios.
Do i have two bios? One for the cpu and one for the motherboard? I went to try and update my asus mb, but that may have been where i got the winzip issue, not the amd bios for the cpu. Either way, still getting the bsod. And when i have booted, i don't think the version of bios has changed. But i was able to check my version versus the latest versions, and i am seriously out of date.

Have windows 7 installed, was trying to update bios to correct issues (bios from dell for dimension 8400) when attempting to run the bios update (from a04 to a09) received error message: error encountered trying to configure windows, please reboot and try again. Bios was saved to one machine and then moved to the machine since i don't have internet access. Any thoughts on what the problem is or how to get around this. I have no sound or internet access since a clean install of windows 7 (previous was xp)

Install While In Bios Or In Xp

I don't know if i should install windows 7 before i load windows xp, while i'm in the bios (boot from cd drive) or should i run it while in xp, when i put in the disk it says install now, check compatibility online. On the directions that come with the disk, it says do it through bios, but then online it says to load windows xp and install it that way (where it actually pulls up the screen mentioned above). So my question is a- what is the difference, and b- which one do you use, and c- under what circumstances do you use it?

Bios Install / Corrupted Hard Drive

I need help. I've been trying both disks to boot from cd-rom. And they are both not reading at all. I have tried disabling caches, and different boot priorities. I cannot go into windows itself because of "blue screen of death".
Although, i can get into command prompt with windows 98 on the other hard-drive.

-Windows xp corrupted(blue screen of death)

-Cd-rom drive does not read windows 7 disk(went through bios)

-Windows 98 command prompt works(but can not boot into safe mode/normal mode due to missing information)

-Tried both 32-bit/64bit windows 7 disks

Can anyone help? Been at this for 2 hours now, and i cannot find anyone with the right information. Im stumped.

Install Update Bug

I've install windows 7 and like it's excitement, i install the update, but i found that the problem is in the networking. Suddenly i cannot connect to the internet using my broadband connection, the troubleshooting is i have to disable my lan, and try to repair the trouble, and it can connect again to the net. But, if i don't install the update, it can connect anytime without doing the "ritual", i've try to restore the system earlier before the update. Any suggestion or the update is really a bug?

Cannot Install Update Kb951847

Enough people seem to be having trouble with this automatic update. I get error 8007 0663 and . 0643. The offered solution is usually to uninstall all versions of dot net (2. 0, 3. 0 and 3. 5) then start all over again. I did that once a year or so ago with the help of an ms support person. It took hours. I feel like maybe this is the easiest answer, rather than the right answer. I don't want to have to take a day off every time dot net fails. Actually, i don't even have a problem except that the update wont run. I compared automatic updates on my two computers.

The other computer never got this update, so why did the one with the problem download it. This update seems fairly old. Did it think it needed to try to refresh dot net? My automatic updates - even to dot net have been running just fine. I can't find a way in the update program to turn this update off. Is there a way to delete the downloaded copy which it keeps using, and try a fresh download. This computer was also rerunning kb982168 and reporting it successful each time. Now it seems to be back in the queue and maybe waiting for the problem update to complete. Nybody have an idea how to get this update downloaded clean so i can try to run it? Or any other ideas?

Update Kb976422 Will Not Install

Windows update kb976422 will not install for me. Every time i run "update" it tells me that the update is an optional install for my system. Every time it runs i observe little cpu or disk activity. The update task never completes. If i run the update during the shut down process, the pc eventually shuts down (long after i'm asleep) but still is listed as an optional update after a restart. I am running windows 7 ultimate (64-bit) with 6 gb of ram, 2. 2 tb of disk (raid 5, though os is not on the raid device) with all other updates successfully installed. The windows troubleshooter did not find a problem or suggest a way to proceed. Is there some way to fix this, or should i just live without it?

Install Update On Reboot, Not On Shutdown

I have a question that i thought microsoft would have thought about and implemented years ago. When there is updates for windows that needs to be installed, why do microsoft only have the option to install these on a shut down? If there is any updates you get 2 options.

1. Shut down the computer and install updates.

2. Install the updates and hope that the update doesn't require you to reboot.

What i want is this.

1. The option to install updates when i reboot my pc because then i can install the updates if i go away for a while and the computer are updated, rebooted and ready to be used again when i get back. Even if the update doesn't require a reboot this feature would appreciated. Murphys law apples here. If you don't have the time to reboot after installing updates a reboot is required. If you do have time a reboot isn't required. And even if a reboot isn't required there is no harm done if i choose to reboot and install updates.

2. The option not to install updates when i want to shut down my pc. Sometimes i might just want to shut down the computer without having to install the update because i'm in a hurry. I don't want to have to wait for the updates to install before i can take my computer with me.

.net Update Wont Install

Advice sought on this situation: dell inspiron 1501 w/vista home basic sp2 32 bit. Windows update recommends installing:  microsoft .net framework 1. 1 service pack 1 security update for windows 2000, windows xp, windows vista, windows server 2008, windows 7, and windows server 2008 r2 (kb953297). Install fails.

According to programs and features, the following .net versions are installed already: .net framework 1. 1, .net framework 1. 1 hotfix (kb929729) and .net framework 3. 5 sp1 attempted to uninstall all three of these versions (with intention of reinstalling from windows update). Only the last uninstalled successfully. When tried to uninstall the first, got message "valid only for products that are currently installed. "

When tried to uninstall the second, got message "the upgrade patch cannot be installed because the program to be updated may be missing. " I'd like to know what version of .net this computer should have, and how to go about getting it installed correctly.

Kb980408 Update Install Failed

Installed win7 pro on my hp desktop two days ago. Installed about 30 updates without issue but am getting hung up on one of them.

Kb980408 keeps failing. The error i get is: "windowsupdate_800b0100" "windowsupdate_dt000"

I downloaded the update and attempted a manual installation but that did not work either. I tried microsoft fixit and it did not resolve the issue even with aggressive mode. I've tried running the system update readiness tool but that didn't work for me. I've pasted the log at the end of this message if it's of any use.

The only antivirus i am running is microsoft security essentials.

Security Update Kb954430 Wont Install

I have tried many things, like downloading it manually. I have read other forums, who say to uninstall the existing 954430 update (in add or remove programs) and reinstall. There is no existing one.

When i install manually, it comes back with an error message:
Hkey_local_machinesoftwareclassesmsxml2. Domdocument. 4. 0clsid verify that you have sufficient access to that key. I am trying to install sp3, and it will refuse that, too, because an update is not installed. I am just running a plain version of windows xp home.

Cannot Install Cumulative Security Update For Ie8

I cannot install the latest security cumulative security update and appear to have been infected with something called cidutility-mud. This appears in the bottom screen tool bar whenever i log on and creates two entries of iexplorer.exe*32 in the task manager. I think this program is stopping the install of the security update. I have tried many scans with ms security essentials which show no virus. I have also tried spybot search and destroy also which finds no adaware. I am concerned my explorer 8 has been hijacked.

Installer Has Been Corrupted After Failed To Install Office Update

My windows installer has been corrupted since a failed to install office update (kb981715). Now i cannot install adobe reader. I have vista home premium, 32 bit on my dell inspiron 518 (purchased march 2009) last, april (2010) i had a failed to install update (kb981715) for microsoft office  2007 and after many , many hours working with a microsoft tech support, i finally was told to just hide that update because my "windows works plus" didn't need this update.

However, i believe that this "failed to install update" removed part of the windows installer and i have been unable to get updates for adobe reader and after i uninstalled that software, i could not install that new download at all.microsoft support page will not accept my correct product id, so now i can't even get that help. What will happen if i try to download a new windows installer?

Nvidia Geforce 8600m Gt Unable To Install / Update Drivers

Clean install windows 7 64 bit from vista 32 bit.nvidia® geforce® 8600m gt gpu listed as a 'standard vga graphics adapter' and unable to install/update drivers. I have a sony vaio vgn-ar51su and installed windows 7 64 bit.

I have downloaded the latest nvida drivers from here: http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/notebook_winvista_win7_x64_195. 62_whql_uk.html

Running the program it doesn't find any compatible devices. When i go to device manager and do it manually (update driver) and point it to the correct folder on c drive where the previous programme has installed all of the driver files it says 'the best driver software for your device is already installed' which, of course is untrue. Can anyone help?

Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 Family Update Fails To Install

I have an hp dv-4 pavilion laptop that is running windows vista 64bit. The "microsoft .net framework 3. 5 service pack 1 and .net framework 3. 5 family update (kb951847) x64" constantly fails to install. I have tried 3-4 times and continue to get a code 800b0100 error. I clicked on the link to troubleshoot the error. This brought me to microsoft's website to download the "system update readiness tool for windows vista for x64-based systems (kb947821){august 2008}". I successfully downloaded this tool but i continue to receive the error when trying to update. Any suggestions on what to try next?

System Won't Install Automatic Update Kb973688

Having a repeated problem with this installation. I receive a: code 643 windows update encountered an unknown error. This also applies to kb954430. I've come across other info on this site to fix this problem but so far with no success. (http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/vistawu/thread/f4bd0a46-a7aa-407b-b64b-f8517fd4ed7f)

I've read the article on this issue. I've downloaded the update and tried to install manually but that didn't work. The info said press the ignore button but i don't get this option. The only option is an ok button at which point the installation rolls back. I've tried updating the windows update component by using the microsoft "fixit" program but i get the same error: an error occurred during the installation of assembly component

{7b2b4ea5-1028-b7e6-a06b-d6b9abf34537}.
Hresult:0x80073712.

The setup dialog has the status as: publishing product information

I then tried to uninstall the msxml4 file by going to the remove programs in the control panel but it states that there are no updates on the computer. Probably got wiped out by one of the pc "cleaners" i've used (ccleaner and the such). Other than this problem, the machine is up-to-date and all other updates have installed successfully. Also tried it with the firewall and antivirus turned off. This is a six week old machine running windows 7 64.

Bios Memory Issue

I'm having memory issues; win 7 is crashing about every 36 hours. Running win 7's memory checker (f8 at startup) says i need to contact manufacturer (memory errors reported). After contacting manufacturer, he said i need to make sure (first and foremost) that my motherboard bios is up to date. Then i need to make sure other bios settings are correct as well.

In previous version of windows, going into the bios was accomplished by pressing f2 at startup; now, however, i have only 2 options when executing this procedure: (1) staring win 7 normally or (2) performing the memory test.

How do you get into the bios? Choosing win 7's help feature, it says either f2 or f12. But neither of these takes me to the bios any longer. My motherboard is nvidia, by the way. Oh, and by the way, once i get into the bios, how do i update?

Changing Bios Settings

I have a custom built computer that has been running the windows 7 release candidate. I've been trying to install the full version but have not successfully been able to boot from the cd/dvd drive. There are two options to prompt the screen before windows starts either press delete for bios settings or f12 for boot menu. First off, i'm not sure which one i'm supposed to so i tried both. When i went to the boot menu the screen was frozen and i could not select the boot first device. What am i doing wrong?

No Bios Screen On Startup

No bios seen on startup - wrong resolution when finished startup but have to put the laptop to sleep and re-wake to finish startup. Acer 5920g; black screen on start-up or re-start

System:
- 5920g
- 8600m nvidia
- 2gb
- Vista home premium upgraded to windows 7 home

Symptoms:
- On start up no bios details and screen stays black but i hear the windows start up sound
- When plugging in the external monitor unable to see laptop screen as a selectable option (so fn+f5/fn+f6 do not work)
- Started about 5 weeks ago.

Actions:
- Put computer to sleep fn+f4
- Wake up and get resolution of 1200 by 768
- Re-set resolution to 1280 by 800
- If put to sleep and re-woken no impact continues to work fine
- Tried with an external monitor and works fine – can see the bios start-up routine

What has been done:
- Re-installed drivers sourced from acer and nvidia
- Refreshed the bios (source acer)
- Re-set the bios defaults
- Got confused with some many hardware suggested issues but convinced it is not a back-light or inverter problem

Will a reload back to vista or a clean install of windows 7 solve the bios post screen and resolution issues?

Bios Cannot See Any Devices To Boot

I performed a full hard disk encryption on my laptop using truecrypt. Now i cannot boot. Before i started i took the precaution to take a full image backup using norton ghost. I used the latest stable version - 6. 3a of truecrypt. I created a truecrypt rescue disk.

My hp laptop was running windows 7 ultimate (32-bit). The laptop contains 2 x 640 gigabyte hard disks from western digital - wd6400bevt blue scope 5400rpm - part number 591192-001 - model number wd6400bevt-60aort0. The system disk had 4 partitions before i started.

When i ran truecrypt i opted for: "encrpt the system partition or the entire system drive"; "standard truecrypt volume" i.e. No cascades; serpent encryption algorithm; the ripemd-160 hash algorithm; and 7 passes. The truecrypt program checked my parameter choices and did a test reboot without any error messages. The encryption process continued for 32 hours.

After the encryption finished with a "successful" message i was a little surprised that the program didn't suggest an immediate reboot. So i looked around on the disk. My file systems appeared normal. I was able to get into microsoft outlook and download new mail. I was able to browse my favorite sites on the internet. I was also able to look inside word documents.

So i decided to reboot. Since then i have not been able to get my system to run at all. I have had no luck using the truecrypt rescue disk; or a system recovery cd; or even the original windows 7 installation disk.

I get a black screen with a 4-5cm diameter blue disk displayed in the middle with the white letters, "hp". Down in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen it says "press the esc key for startup menu". Pressing esc does nothing, unless you press it 8-10 times, when it causes a "beep" noise to sound.

The problem is that the insyde h20 bios supplied by hp is unable to communicate with either of the hard disks or the cd drive; or a usb thumb drive. The bios program does talk to the keyboard.

I have tried a strategy to reset the bios back to default. I removed the battery and power cord from my laptop. Then held down the power-up button for 15 seconds to ensure any residual power had drained. Then i plugged the power supply back in, and hit the power up key. I still get the black screen with the hp logo and the press esc message.

I tried powering up and pressing a range of function keys.
F1 gives me a , "f1.system information" message.
F2 gives me a , "f2. Startup check" message.
F9 gives me a , "f9. Change boot device order" message.
F10 gives me a , "f10. Bios setup options" message.
F11 gives me a , "f11.system recovery" message.
Esc gives me a , "esc. Pause startup" message.
. But none of these options actually work.

To me this indicates that the bios programme is working partially and able to intepret keystrokes from my keyboard. But nothing else happens other than the whirr of my fan, the led lights displaying normally around my keyboard and the sound of my dvd/cd drive spinning up, and then slowing down again. It appears that in order to bootstrap my hard disk or even bootstrap from a bootable cd the bios needs to talk to one of the (now encrypted) partitions on my system hard drive.

I have tried re-seating the hard drive cables and contacts, and even swapping the hard drives over. I've probably voided my warranty by unscrewing the covers off the underside of my laptop to access these hard drives. I don't have access to another laptop or desktop capable of mounting my western digital hard drives. So i haven't been able to try the option of decrypting my system hard drive by that method.
