Reset Security Settings / User Permissions To Default

I replaced my winxp computer with a new windows 7 machine this weekend and i'm still getting my feet wet with the new os. I tried to download and install a game, but i kept getting error messages indicating that i didn't have the proper rights. The solution ended up being to set the uac settings to zero. Before i got there, i made some unfortunate attempts to change permissions on the c: drive that got stopped part way through due to errors popping up.

Is there a way to set my permissions all back to default without recovering back to before the changes were made? There would be quite a bit of work (downloaded programs, rearranging files after the transfer from my old machine, etc) lost if i just use the recovery tool.

Reset All User Permissions To Default

How to reset all user permissions to default? I accidentally stopped a user permission change task and now my system is all messed up, programs won't load correctly after reboot, etc. . I can't change the permissions back because it tells me that i do not have access to certain folders. When i try to find these folders to change them manually, for some reason they are not visible any more. (I have show hidden files to show them). I tried a system restore and the restore points are corrupt, so, i have been looking for a way to reset all permissions to default or factory setting if you will.

Is there any way to reset all permissions to default without going one by one?

I need help to see if someone can tell me how to restore settings to default.

Power Settings Reset

Although i have setup my laptop not to enter sleep mode when i close the lid and this has worked several times, after installing updates this setting does not work anymore. The settings themselves did not change, just the behavior. I tried to change them back to default and then change them back to how i want (i.e. Not to enter sleep mode when the lid is closed), but the laptop still goes into sleep mode when the lid is closed.

Any ideas where i can begin troubleshooting?

Security Permissions

I just upgraded from vista home premium 32 bit to windows 7 professional 64 bit. Before i did this i copied a massive number of files to a external usb drive. Once i got w7 64 bit installed and opened the external drive, where i put all the files, i can't see the files. The new w7 user is part of administrators. Administrators has all permissions set. When i tried to apply administrator permissions to the entire external drive i get nothing. How do i get my new w7 user to see all the files on the external drive? On all my external drives?

User Account Has Reset Itself

I recently restarted my computer, after uninstalling my "dell support center" because it's been annoying. When i logged back into my user account, it was like i was logging onto a brand new account. No files were in my documents etc. And no shortcuts were on my screen. However, all my files are still on my hard drive. Is there something i can do to fix this and get my old account back? I've checked and its still the same account name, just everything gone.

Security - Total Loss Of Permissions And Access

I have been trying to work this one out on my own for over a week now. I have a pretty good idea that my computer is being used through remote desktop. My administrator rights have been trumped and i can't access important parts of my computer systems. I have tried a ton of the advanced prompts in attempts to regain rights over group policy. I didn't make the disks for a recovery, i know, what your thinking but i have only had this computer a couple of months.

Now after doing much reading about the mechanics of my computer i now realize my error. Bottom line is i need to know if there is anyway to get rid of the rif raf running my computer systems. I also have had a ton of stuff installed in my system that i don't recognize at all. (In the device manager) at times i have had my internet adapters disappear and after painstaking hours finally found a way to retrieve them. I am by no means an expert on computers but know enough to navigate it well, so if someone could help with instructions on how to clear all this out.

I know how they breached my system so once their out i know what i have to do to keep it that way but i just am struggling with getting this all fixed. I don't have a ton of money or a debit card to order the disks either. So any help or advice that i can get for free would be greatly.

I am at my wits end with this computer and am about to throw it out the window not really but, i can't take too much more, it took me all night to figure out why i couldn't get online just so i could come here and get this typed out. I look forward to any suggestions.

Add Email To Default Settings

I have a new computer with windows 7. I've installed and have been using "live" as my email account without any major issues. However i do not have any email showing as my default because i do not show mail at all in my default settings. I understand how to get to the default settings, i know how to change existing default settings, what i can't figure out is how to add mail to the default settings to then make my "live" email my default. Anyone?

Restoring Factory Default Settings

I am a novice to intermediate pc user. Here is my problem. I have a netbook running windows 7 starter edition. When i got it, i was probably prompted to allocate memory on the second drive for backup space. I didn't know the ramifications and set half the memory which was a mistake. How do i either change the ratio of allotted space or how can i simply restore the computer to factory default settings so i am prompted to start over and reallocate space. I don't mind wiping the device of all in pictures, music, settings, etc. Just want to go back to factory default settings.

Excessive Security Settings

After installing windows 7 home premium, it has apparently decided that i am no longer the administrator of my machine. I cannot access links in office, nor can i make changes to certain documents in word - they are apparently all read-only. I continually get the default message (something to the effect of) "this operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator", whether it's attempting to utilize links in message in outlook, or whether trying to change or save documents in word.

Also, i no longer have access to certain folders on my hard drive. There have been other issues, but i have slowly been able to resolve some of them. I have already tried multiple attempts with the standard microsoft help desk, but they have been no help, and have since refused to answer any of my subsequent questions, and it has now been more than two months since the last time they responded to me.

My question is when i restore defaults to the default key settings group: bank 1, all of my assigned macros turn to not assigned as they should but not s4-s8, it is only on the default key settings group and bank 1, for example my custom game macros if i restore defaults to the mall of the customized settings that i made return to not assigned as they should. But if i restore defaults to the default key settings group: bank 1, s4-s8 macro keys are left with what looks like something
Is assigned to them but nothing really is.

Security Settings And Trusted Sites Problem

I've encountered many irritating problems since i bought this windows 7 dell computer. With enormous time and effort, i've managed to solve most of these problems but not all. Here is one of the unsolved ones:

I want to set security for general internet browsing to the highest level. This setting is located on the internet options security tab. It provides for different settings for general browsing than for trusted sites. I have added about fifty trusted sites to the list and chosen a low security setting for them since i trust them.

But here is the problem: when i set the highest level of security for general internet browsing, some of the trusted sites no longer display anything. I just see a blank screen. It makes no sense, because there is a different setting for trusted sites, and they shouldn't be affected by the setting for general browsing. So it doesn't work as it should. And in order to visit my trusted sites, i have to set security for general browsing to medium high instead of high. That is the problem.

User Profile Not Loading Settings/preferences

On friday 4/23 i went to my computer and my entire user profile appeared to be corrupted. I have my main admin. Account, and my girlfriend has her own user account (not admin). When starting up into my main admin user account, i had an error message for settings.ini being used by a different process. My other problems are as follows:

- All app icons pinned to taskbar became icons of blank pages
- My gadgets do not appear on the desktop.

- When trying to access windows help and support, i get what looks like a .txt stating: "windows help and support encountered a problem you might be able to resolve the problem by restarting
Windows help and support. " Restarting does nothing.

- Any searches i attempt, both in the windows explorer bar at the top right or in the search field in the start menu return 0 results any time i search.

- Many icons when clicked either do nothing (i.e. Firefox) or give me an error message along the lines of "not able to load critical files for this application to run. Specifically skype. When trying to open mediamonkey, for example, i get an error saying "the directory c:users[my girlfriend's user profile]appdatalocalmediamonkey cannot be created. " Something along these lines happened with a different application, notifying me that it was not able to access c:users[girlfriend's profile name]appdatalocal[etc].

- Google chrome is not able to read nor write to its original location, and forces me to choose another. It does not save this state and asks me each time i try to load it. Also, all bookmarks and settings/prefs. Have disappeared.

- Many different applications act as if it is the first time i open them, each time i open them. No settings, preferences, or history is saved after the application is closed. After doing a significant amount of searching and very basic diagnostics, i believe what has happened is that my user profile is attempting to read all preferences and settings from my girlfriend's user account.

When logging onto her account, i have absolutely no problems with accessing the same applications i have troubles with on my account. I seem to have no personal preferences nor changes i have made to my account saved. Or if they are saved, they are in my c:users[my account]appdata[etc] and they are
Not being read by the service that reads preferences in windows.

I have gone into msconfig and disabled all non-ms services, as well as trying to enable all startup items, and disable all startup items. The problem still persists.

Does anyone have any insights to this issue? How might i direct windows to read my preferences and settings from my user account and not default to another - if that is indeed what is going on here.
I feel it would be good to note that on thursday night near midnight my girlfriend downloaded yahoo messenger. When i went to her user account there were several (appx. 40) photos of a blonde girl, some pornographic in nature, that were sitting directly on the desktop.

When checking the properties of the photos, they were created on friday morning around 3-4:00am she denies all knowledge of these photos. There is a chance, i suppose, that i was hacked through ym and the pics were downloaded then, and something malicious was done to my settings. I ran malwarebytes and my avg internet security virus/malware scans and nothing was detected on my machine.

Unable To Locate Files After Changing Security Settings

Thought i changed security setting for file, but instead, all files gone. No error messages, but after having "fiddled" with a parameter in file security, the system seems to have altered my administrator profile. It appear as if the underlying file structure/names have been altered, so that previous i had c:usersole, and so on, now i have c:ole. And so on. This means that all my files are out of reach.

However, by starting an old application program from the installed program directory, that program still retains and can access earlier file kept as "recent" file in that application. I cannot copy these files to my new directory structure, as the application will tell me, that the directory (new) stated is not accessible. It appears that my earlier underlying file structure was parsed to eliminate the "user" folder, how can i get it back?

Security Center Can't Change Your Automatic Update Settings

Windows update cannot be opened and windows update settings cannot be changed. When you click on the windows update tab, nothing opens. If i try to change windows update settings, it displays an error message saying, "security center can't change your automatic update settings". This error message does not cite any number. As suggested to somebody in the forum with a similar problem, i tried a virus and malware scan, the result: no viruses or malware detected. Every other suggestion i found does not get me anywhere. What do you suggest?

It's all there, i can see the icons and such, but i cannot view it when i click to open it; no permission.

Home network includes a vista machine and a 7 machine. I normally map the c drive of each machine to each other with a drive letter. I have mapped external drives on one machine to the other just fine. When i try to map the "c" drive i get a permission denied. Something happens if i try to map c:usersbruce. Bruce is my one and only user and is system administrator. I have gone to sharing and set everyones permission to full control with no luck. What do i have to do to see the c drive from one machine on the other.

Administrator Permissions / Privileges

Another new computer running windows 7. I'm pleased with windows 7 but have encountered the problem of being owner and administrator account but there are privileges not allowed. The error reads "cannot import c:usersdocumentsieopen. Reg: error accessing registry. " I have used this script before on a windows xp computer and had no trouble at all. I am asking someone to help me change the administrator privileges so i can add to the registry. Like the answers i read it is hard to believe a computer with me as administrator doesn't have these privileges.

Password Reset

I just purchased dell inspiron 1545 and set up my user name and password. I've ordered my modem. I bought a transfer cable to connect my older pc to this one to transfer my files. The problem is that i can't log on because it won't accept my password. I just set it yesterday when i took it out of the box. I've checked everything i know such as caps lock and possibly transposing my password. The password i set up is the same one i've been using on my other pc for years, so i know i didn't forget it.

I need to find out how to bypass the log in to reset the password.

Folder / File Permissions In Properties Tab

I have a particular program that will not start because i do not have write permissions for the folder, sub-folders, and files associated with the program. Going to the properties tab reveals that the folder is read only. I uncheck the box but can't seem to make it a permanent change. It always comes back up as read only. I have gone into every imaginable edit/advanced tab possible and given permissions to every possible group i can think of, yet despite the fact that every kind of permission possible is enabled and visible, i still can't uncheck the read-only box permanently and i still get "you do not have write permissions" from the program. I have tried changing ownership, running as administrator, and yet no progress on this problem.

Access Denied On Usb Drive After Removing Permissions

I accidentally removed all the access permissions from my external usb drive, after i had already taken full ownership of the drive, and now it shows me the drive icon and letter "e:", but states that access is denied when opening. Even the "security tab" is gone from the drives properties.

I was trying to change permissions to include inheritable ones, and i hit the wrong button to remove i think(i was stupidly moving too quickly through all the options, my fault), and after that i was no longer able to access the drive. I have thousands of files on this drive! Please help, anyone? The drive still shows up within windows explorer as e:, and disk management shows it as a healthy (primary partition).

Update: found the fix, thank you lord! I tried going into safe mode just in case, and it worked! Go into safe mode, and login with an administrator account. From there you will be able to right click on the drive and have the "security tab" working again, where you can take ownership and add permissions back!

Monitor Unwanted Auto Reset

I have recently installed windows 7 premium onto my desktop. It has been performing reasonable trouble free but this latest glitch has me perplexed. It has been hot, but the machine was performing well until i left it for a short time and came back to find that the monitor setting had reset to create a blank screen and the "not optimum mode. Recommended mode:1280x1024 60hz". I have restarted the machine and the program is restarting properly, but there is nothing on the screen, just this message.

The machine has quad core q6600 2. 4ghz *mb cache
4gb dual channel ddr2 800 mhz memory
Nvidia geforce 8600gt - 512 mb pci-e graphics card
Samsung syncmaster 710n monitor

I have encountered this on an xp machine and the solution is to interrupt the boot process get into the a mode where you can change the monitor settings, but this was done by a technician. Any solutions?

Login Password Recovery / Reset

A friend of mine is setting up a new laptop with windows 7. He gave his assistant his chosen password to access windows, however, she forgot to write the case combination she used down. So now he can't access windows. Is there a password recovery section or a way that he can reset this. I am not sure if there were alternate security questions asked that he could refer to, but getting around the password with alternate questions, would he still need the password to be able to reset this?

I just got my new computer and powered it on. Windows asks for my passwords, and i enter them both (i am sure i entered the same password both times). Windows 7 boots up, goes through the set up. Then says there are a couple updates, to restart the computer. I restart the computer. Now when i try to log in, it says my username/password are incorrect and i can't reset it because i haven't even been able to set up an administrator account or a password reset disk. How do i fix this?

Reset Local Area Connection 2 Adapter

When i upgraded to windows 7 64 from vista 64 a few weeks ago i began getting stop page in my internet connection requiring "reset the local area connection 2 adapter". The internet ceases during video-on-demand downloading and requires manually running the network troubleshooter which "reset the local area connection 2 adapter" to get the connection back. I have nvidia nfp 3600, driver is up to date according to nvidia's test app. There are a ton of people with this issue, and as many superstitious suggestions, seemingly none embraced by microsoft as a definitive cause and solution. No, i don't want to install a vista driver on my windows 7 box.

No, i don't have the "task overload" option to turn off. No, changing the internet rate to 100mbps from auto didn't fix it. No, i'm not doing complex registry alterations to "see" if it goes away. No, reseting the cable modem didn't fix it. I want to know microsoft acknowledges it to be a general problem so i can follow the progress on providing an update to fix it.
