Long Time To Load Win 7 On A Sata Drive

Win 7, 64 bit loading on a gigabyte ma785gm-us2h with 4 gig of memory. One pata pullout drive, 2 dvd burners, one pullout sata, (hot swappable) and one internal 160 gig sata drive. Have tried raid, with no array and i am currently trying ahci setup for the internal drive. Only happens on sata internal drive. First load took about 6-8 hrs. Second load was about 3 hrs when it should be about 1/2 hr. On first install, (a few months ago) took about 1/2 hr. To install my new version of win 7 and all programs loaded in a minimal amount of time and were not sluggish ro run.

The same programs are taking a long time to load. It seems to load to a pata drive o. K. When it takes a long time to load my programs are sluggish to run the first time i loaded it new out of the box with the same programs to load everything was fine. I was impressed and had i not lost 2 sata drives set up as a raid aray 1 it would still be running.

Vista tends to do the same thing and i wouldn't load it but there are some features. I like so it is loaded on the other computer. For the first time in a while vista was about 1/2 hr to load and hope it doesn't crash for a while as i do not want to load xp onto the sata drive in matts computer. Windows 7 is on maries computer. Both computers are named after my kids. Version 7 is impressive over vista 32 bit.

Programs Taking Long Time To Load

Windows 7 - when i right click on any icon, in desktop, programs, my computer, documents, it takes 5 minutes for the window to open. Also any program in system tools takes 5 minutes to load. Windows explorer must be corrupt. Before i do a complete wipe, i was hoping someone knew of an easier solution to my problem. This is what i am running.

Here is the problem i am having when right clicking. After running several complete disk scans, registry cleaner, disk defrags, error fixes, device mgr. You name it, i have ran it, even from the cmd, there are no system errors, except for one minor error pertaining to my monitor display.
I have searched through all my hardware, and checked for updates, it always comes back as latest version installed already.

What is happening is when i "right click" any icon on the dektop, pgms, my computer, recycle bin, etc. It takes windows explorer like 5 minutes to open the little options window. Here is the problem i am having when i left click. When i go to system tools, and try to run defrag, it takes the same amount of time or more to open. Left clicking on 95% of all pgms. Works fine with no hang ups.

My thought is, windows explorer has been infected somehow but gets by all my system checks. I really don't want to do a wipe, but if it will make this issue go away i have no choice. I must add, that after my complete system check and defrag, everything worked great, but after the next boot, i was right back where i started with the same problems mentioned above.

Hard Drive, Devices Window Takes Long Time To Open

When i open the "computer" window, to see the hard drive, devices, etc. It's taking five minutes for it to load. Why is it taking so long when the drives and devices should just pop up? Click on the start icon, move over to my computer, then wait forever for it to load.

It doesn't make sense why, this system is analyzing the content for so long when i just bought tis computer. I have a mac, and i know this is different. But my dell laptop, and my wife's old computer doesn't nearly take this long. If i right click over computer, open in new window appears, and it acts as it always has. Why the unnecessary difference between the two. It should be fixed.microsoft shouldn't let this go on for long.

Usb Drive Takes Long Time When Sorting Files In Directory

I have several external usb drives on my machine. Some of the folders on those drives contain several thousand files, the default is for them to be in name order. Fine. But i quite often want to rearrange them by date, everytime i do this i get the semi-transparent green progress bar at the top of the folder but it seems to take an age to complete.

On previous versions of windows clicking on the column you wanted files sorted by made the sort almost instant. Each time i go back to the folder i have to wait all over again. I thought i had added the folders to the library etc to make searching and sorting easier. Am i doing/not doing something stupid?

Usb Takes Long Time To Eject

I upgraded to windows 7 over thanksgiving with no problems. However, recently i discovered that when i clicked on the "safely eject" icon on the taskbar to eject my usb drive, it takes over 1 min for the menu to pop up. I restarted my computer in safe mode and tried ejecting my usb, which worked fine with no lag. I don't know what happened that suddenly made ejecting so slow now. I haven't installed any new software since i upgraded, and this is definitely a recent issue. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Pc Is Taking Long Time (10 Minutes) To Shut Down

I am having trouble working out why my laptop sometimes takes up to 10 minutes to shut down. It is an acer 5920g with a core 2 duo (t7300) and 2gb ram. It is running windows 7 home premium to which i have upgraded from vista home premium (both 32 bit). It is on a small home network but the problem still happens on moving it to a different network. The delay seems to be longer if the laptop has been switched on for longer - i.e. If the laptop has only been on for a few minutes then it shuts down very quickly but if it has been on for a few hours then it can take 10 minutes to shut down. Event viewer does not seem to be much help as even creating a custome log of all information around the time of the delay it shows nothing - here are the messages either side (nothing appears between these times:

Information 02/02/2010 22:09:14 kernel-general 12 none
Information 02/02/2010 22:00:20 kernel-general 13 none

I have run full anti-malware scans and am fairly confident nothing nasty is lurking. I've seen mention on some forums of clearing virtual memory on shutdown causing delays but windows 7 home premium does not seem to have the gpedit.exe utility that is recommended to cure this. Also i have looked in the registry and found a key labeled "clearpagefileatshutdown" which i assume would be the one to set with gpedit but this is set to 0x00000000 (0) - i'm guessing this setting means that the page file should not be cleared at shutdown - is that correct?

I have tried setting the registry key for waittokillapptimeout to both 2000 and 20000 but this seems to make no significant difference. Does anyone have any ideas of what else i can look for to try and find out what is causing the delay? Just as a final thought - while the close down screen is sitting doing nothing for the 10 minutes i have noticed some slow disc and network traffic but i can't tell what this is doing. As i said earlier there seems to be nothing in event viewer's logs - at least that i can find. I'd be really grateful for any help with this as i'm stuck for what to try next.

Sata Drive Order

I have two western digital cavier (wd5001aals) drives on my new system. One is fixed and the other is in a removable vantec ez 2 swap case (mrk-300st). I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64.

The fixed drive is bootable and contains windows (c: drive). The removable drive (d:) is empty. Windows' disk management indicates that the fixed drive is 'disk 1' and the removable drive is 'disk 0'. I wish to reverse this designation. That is: the fixed drive should be 'disk 0' and the removable should be 'disk 1'. I've tried using different sata ports on the mother board but no matter how i switch them, windows always keeps the designation the same. The mother board is: asus p755d premium.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how i can resolve this issue?

64-bit Sata Drive Issue

I recently built a new computer and installed win7 pro, 64 bit as the os. I have two, 1. 5 tb sata drives installed in the raid 0 and raid 1 position on the motherboard. The device manager shows both drives as operating normally but yet, when i click on my computer, it shows only "drive c: 139 gb. " I would like to configure it as drive c: and drive d:. The bios is set to ide/sata. If i go back and reset it as ahci, windows fails to boot. What have i done incorrectly and how can i correct the problem?(Intel i7 860, 8 mb ram. Evga p55-sli mobo)

How To Prevent Users From Ejecting Sata Drive ?

Hi, i've a second sata drive (wdc wd15ears-00z5b1 if it matters), that windows 7 thinks is removable, and shows in the "safely remove hardware and eject media" applet, allowing any user to "eject" it. The hard drive is not removable, but sometimes users (non-admin) occasionally click "eject" it and remove from the system, forcing me to restart computer to bring it back. How do i disable this functionality and tell windows 7 this drive is not removable and may not be "ejected" by my users?

Recover Disc Image From Sata Drive

I just purchased a new laptop. Spent all last weekend upgrading the os to win7 pro; reinstalling all my apps; and transferring all my data. Done! I then discovered one of the usb ports didn't work.
When i return to the store, i found they had the same laptop, but with a larger hd at the same price. So. I need to transfer all my "stuff" to the new machine.

I used the windows disk image utility. I successfully created the images on an external esata drive.
When i tried to run the windows restore utility on the new machine, it didn't recognize any available images. (The esata drive appears ok in windows explorer.

Fresh Install Of Win7 On Sata Drive

I have tried several times to install windows 7 oem onto my freshly built computer onto a sata 2 drive. It hangs up each time after it copies the files off the dvd and says its starting up windows. No error messages are displayed. It never gets to the point where it asks me if i need to install 3-party drivers for the gigabyte sata controller. I have tried to install with the wd drive both non-partitioned and partitioned/formatted to ntfs. What am i doing wrong?

Gigabyte ga-ma785gmt. Ud2h
Amd phenom ii x4 965
4 gig of corsair dual channel ddr3 1666+
Internal integrated ati radeon hd 4200 graphics
Western digital 500 gb sata 2
Seagate 500 gb sata 2

Jack

Update as of 12/19/09

I have finally got back to trying to finish the build after about 10 days of waiting to get the time to sit down withthe system again. I'm developing a painful disgust for windows 7. The software is real touchy in comparison with windows xp which i have loaded on several types of systems with no problems. I went through some forums on the subject and found several suggestions which ultimately helped me get the software installed. The system subsequently crashed while getting updates from microsoft's website. I'm now going through the motions of trying to reload the software. Here is what a few people suggested:

1. Remove all hardware not needed for the install: cd/rw, external usb devices, etc. And bring memory down to one stick. (Done) note: i never had to do this with xp.
2. Make floppy or usb with sata driver. Install when prompted. (Done)

Note: make sure you install sata and not raid driver because people have had problem with raid drivers during install.

3. Make sure bios is set to sata mode. (Done).
4. Make sure your not using raid sata connectors. I have 5 connectors all the same color listed as sata2_0, sata2_1, sata2_2, sata2_3, and sata2_4 which according to my manual can all be used for sata or for raid depending on bios setting. (Done).

My current install says it is completing installation and has been setting in the same spot at the progress bar at the bottom #2 installing windows for over 90 minutes. I believe the install hung up again for whatever reason. Going to try again and recheck everything. Failed again taking motherboard, processor, and ram back to fry's tomorrow.

Update as of 12-20-09

I returned the gigabyte ga-ma785gmt. Ud2h, amd phenom ii x4 965 and 4 gig of corsair dual channel ddr3 1666+ back to fry's for store credit. Fry's said that due to the issues they suspect that the motherboard was bad. My new selection was asus m3n78-vm motherboard, amd phenom ii x4 965 processor, and kingston ddr2 2gb ram. I built the system and windows 7 loaded with no problems.

The bios and windows 7 recognized the sata 2 hard drive without even loading the sata driver at install. The system seems stable. I'm going to let it run overnight and see if i get any errors. My faith in windows 7 is restored.

Win 7 Does Not Support Sata Cdrom Drive

I installed windows 7 home premium from my lg gsa-h62l super multi dvd rewriter which has a sata interface. Device manager sees the drive as hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-h62l ata device. When i insert a disc, the drive spins up, the light flashes a few times, then goes out.co-incidentally, the hard disk led comes on solid. However, nothing else happens, and the hard disk led stays on solid. When i eject the disk, the hard disk led still stays on solid forever, i have to shut down the system to restore normal led activity on the hard disk.

I know the dvd drive is good, cause it still works fine on my xp computer. It also works on the windows 7 computer, if i boot up from bios with a bootable cd in it. However, if i boot up with the windows 7 cd in it, it goes past the starting windows screen, then hangs on the blue windows 7 splash screen. The mouse pointer still works. Ctrl-alt-del does nothing. The hard disk led is on solid. Have to force power shut-down. This is with the bios raid mode set to either ide or raid. If set to ahci, the computer boots from the windows 7 disc ok, but does not boot from the hard disk, which also has a sata interface. It hanhs on the circling windows icon display, the resets.

I cannot do a system restore, since windows 7 was installed on a computer that had xp running on it.

Sata Drive Doesn't Wake From Sleep

Have a clean install, firmware and all drivers are up to date. Windows 7 enterprise, x64
2 hard drives are installed in the system - 120 gb intel ssd with os install and 2tb wd caviar green which is used as a misc. File storage drive-system works fine until pc goes into sleep mode. If the pc wakes from sleep the 2tb drive is not accessible and does not appear under my computer found an article referencing a hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977178/, however i can't figure out what to download. The following are the files available as a download in the hotfix request page:

Windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2   all (global)  x86   sp1fix299433 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)x64sp1fix306215 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)x64sp1fix299433 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)ia64sp1fix299433 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)ia64sp1fix306215

Then there is a reference to manifest files (. Manifest) and the mum files (. Mum), as well as additional files for all supported x86-based versions of windows 7 what exactly do i need to download and install?

Sata Hard Drive To Usb Adaptor Cannot Access

I cannot get my windows 7 x64 laptop to access my sata hard drive connected via a usb adaptor. Upon connecting for the first time or after you have uninstalled the usb mass storage device, it successfully installs the drivers. But you cannot see the drive listed in "my computer" nor access it. If you go to disk management the drive is acknowledged but offline. I had no problem accessing an ide drive connected via a usb adapter that was made by the same manufacturer that makes the sata to usb i am using. I have read/wrote to this sata drive and usb adaptor plugged in several other machines using vista and xp. My sata to usb adaptor:

Hangs / Freezes While Transferring Files From Sata Drive To Raid 0

Windows 7 hangs/freezes while transferring files from my e drive (sata) to my c drive (raid 0 sata). Every time i try to move a large group of files, the copy process will lock up about 40 seconds in. I can move smaller groups of files, liek 100-200mb or less and everything works fine, but if i try to move a gigabyte or more, the system will freeze.

Motherboard: asus p5n-d 750i

Cannot Manage Backup Space On More Than 1 Drive At A Time

Cannot manage backup space on more than 1 drive at a time; can view backups on more than 1 drive at a time. I make image and regular backups to 2 different usb drives - because you do not know when a backup drive will fail. Win7 backup and restore gui allows one to view backups on multiple drives at same time via "select another backup to restore files from".

Manage space only allows to manage space on the currently configured backup drive. Further - if modifying the configuration to select a different drive - you are forced to start a backup before you can manage space on that drive. - "Save settings and run backup" there may be little space on the drive - so i will have to either cancel the backup after started or configure a useless  small backup so that i can then manage space on the drive.

Remove Drive From Raid / Change Sata Mode From Raid To Ahci

Remove a drive from raid then change sata mode from raid to ahci, situation: i have 3 physical hdds: 1 ssd and 2 identical mechanical drives. The ssd stores the win 7 x64 pro installation while the mechanical drives, in raid 1, store data. The sata mode is set to raid at the moment. I want to remove a mechanical hard drive, thus, breaking the raid. Using the intel raid manager interface, i think i will still have all the data on the 2 mechanical hard drives.

Then, i will want to change the sata mode to ahci (1) because i will no longer have a raid (2) i want to enable trim for my ssd. Questions: how will changing sata mode to ahci affect my os installation? Should i change the mode before or after i remove a raid member? Will i have to reinstall windows?

Ide Hard Drive Connected Via Usb To Ide/sata Adapter

I have an old maxtor 9 1303d6 ide drive which is connected via a usb to ide/sata adapter and an active usb hub. The device worked fine under vista 32 ultimate. After doing a clean install of windows 7 ultimate and subsequent updates, the device is no longer seen in windows explorer. Device manager does see the hard drive, but the usb controller section of devman now shows an unknown device.

(I suspect that this is the usb to ide/sata adapter) the device is accessible using a hard disk recovery utility which can read the maxtor drive. I've tried to unininstall/reinstall and have moved the adapter from port to another on the hub. The device returns a code 43 error and i've tried the suggested kb updates with no luck.

New Sata Boot Drive Wont Boot

I have a new 2t sata drive (seagate). It took about 5 days of research to finally get my computer to see it. I used seagate's disk wizard to clone my older drive (ide). The sata drive was supposed to become the c: drive. Disk management does label it as the c drive but in "computer" it sees it as f:i disconnected my older drive and when i booted up the bios kept looking for the ide drive. Although the motherboard has sata built in, there seems to be no way to tell the bios that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive.

Also with the original drive disconnected i get a "ntldr not found. Press control-alt-delete to restart. "I believe mybios is the problem. I have flashed it with the newest bios i could find, (dates from 2005) but no sata adjustments in the bios. How can i make the bios know that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive?

Or is there a way to trick the bios into thinking that it is an ide drive? As it is, the computer is recognizing the sata drive as a scsi drive. I read somewhere that this is not a problem. In summary, i want my system to boot from the sata drive. I would like to reformat the original drive.

Load Driver - A Required Cd/dvd Drive Driver Is Missing

I tried to do fresh install of windows 7 ultimate 64 bit version (pls don't recommend 32 bit, as 64 bit support is the main reason for me to switch to win7) on my home pc and installer is requesting for additional driver. I've seen similar problems in other forum threads, however responses does not really help me.

My hw configuration is:
Msi p35 platinum + q6600 + 4 gb ram + few sata hdds + nvidia geforse 9800 gtx, i've downloaded all latest drivers from msi site. I even manage to extract drivers, which require installation (such as all inf drivers, etc). However, windows installer is rejecting all drivers (it allows to select driver but throwing "no new driver found" message after i press "next" button).

So, here is summary of my biggest frustration:
1. Why windows 7 installer rejects all latest drivers?
2. Why windows 7 upgrade advisor is saying that all devices on my computer are windows 7 compatible (on 64 bit report)
3. Why windows 7 installer does not mention device which requires new driver?
4. If microsoft is planning to run qa on its customers i'd like to get my fees!

Long Boot Times

After getting to the log in screen, i type in my password and my system seems to hang for anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes. This started about 3 months ago and since then i have resigned myself to just sleeping my computer. That worked fine for a while, but not it's hanging for almost the same amount of time. The light on my hdd never goes out during these hangs.

I have tried the start up repair utility. I did not install anything new before this started happening either. I have not tried to reinstall windows because, in my opinion, this shouldn't be necessary. I tried (not sure if i did it successfully) to disable any and all external network connections (like my xbox 360 and other windows based computers) on the off chance that it was hanging trying to connect to their shared folders.

How To Upgrade Hard Drive At Same Time I Upgrade To Win 7?

How should i upgrade my hard drive at the same time i upgrade to windows 7? I plan to upgrade my laptop from win xp pro to win 7 pro and want to at the same time upgrade my hard drive. I don't know what i should do to ensure that the win 7 install program recognizes the prior win xp installation.
Would it work to put the old (win xp) drive in an external enclosure connected via usb? Alternatively, what would i need to copy from the old hard drive to the new in order to have the win 7 install recognizes win xp?

Installing Programs Takes Too Long

I have seen similar issues raised on this forum but none of the answers so far work for me. My system specs are : windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram, 2. 80ghz when i attempt to install various programs (games, audio editing, gadgets) the pc runs through the standard pop-ups, license acceptance etc in normal time right up until it attempts to actually install the program. Then it appears to stop. The pc doesn't crash, other applications keep working (freecell helps pass the time).

The install window isn't frozen (the loading 'pulse' keeps moving). Task manager shows the install program as 'running', cpu usage is 12% or thereabouts. Physical memory approx 17%. So it appears there is plenty of capacity to handle the task but no urgency. For all of the programs i have tried to install i have used normal, administrator, compatibility & safe boot install modes with no effect. Disabling virusguard and unnecessary applications / processes has no effect.

For minor applications after 8 to 10 hours the install may complete, i guess other applications might also complete too but i don't have a week to spare. Please, please don't suggest 'microsoft installer cleanup utility' - this bug occurs for several different programs and on 1st install even in safe mode. Nd please don't ask me to reinstall windows 7. You may as well suggest i buy a new pc (actually a mac is looking good right now).

Ie8 Script Running Long

The last few times i have tried to access my hotmail inbox with ie8 i have gotten the following dialog:

Windows internet explorer stop running this script? A script on this page is causing internet explorer to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive.

-
Yes   no
-

If i click no and wait, then 30 seconds later or so i get the dialog again. If i click yes then ie locks up completely. That is, it stops displaying this dialog and becomes unresponsive. I have to end it with task manager. I can't disable javascript because the passport site needs javascript to function and if i put *. Mail.live.com into my restricted sites (where javascript is disabled) then the login process fails. I have experienced this on more than one computer. This one is running xp and the other windows 7. Both are running ie8. Any ideas?

Problem Booting In Sata Mode

I recently built a computer using an asrock x58 extreme mobo. I installed windows 7, but realized only afterward that the mobo's default setting for the hdds was ide rather than sata.

I followed the registry hack instructions to change the "start" parameter for the msahci driver to "0" (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/922976?P=1), rebooted, changed the bios setting to ahci and everything worked fine. The sata drivers loaded and things were looking good!

However, a few days later i had a problem with going into "sleep" mode. The computer hung, and after several minutes i just switched if off and rebooted.

Now, i cannot get it to boot properly with the bios in ahci mode. The registry entries are still the same as when ahci was working, but it will not boot in sata mode. I get the message "problem loading os". Changing the bios back to ide allows me to boot.

Any ideas as to what went wrong (was it the hard shutdown that messed me up?), And any ideas on how to get sata working again?
