Unwanted System Tray Items

I recently used revo uninstaller to uninstall weather watcher, weather watcher live and weather bug. Most everything was removed except for their system tray icons and options from the notification area icon control panel. How can i get rid of all traces of these apps?

I guess i can't attach an image here so, here's a link to a screen shot of what i'm talking about:

http://i103. Photobucket.com/albums/m132/bug67/computer/unwantedsystrayitems.jpg

I had some other stray files that i was able to get rid of with regedit but, i for the life of me can't figure this one out. I hope i have this in the correct place. I'm sure there are files somewhere i need to delete which is why i chose this forum.

System Icons Not Showing In System Tray

The volume, network, power, and action center icons are greyed out and nothing i do using gpedit. Msc or regedit is working to fix this. I've also had problems with setting and configuring my network which was working just fine until recently.

I've followed these two guides and still nothing:

System Tray Icons Look Weird

My system tray icons look different on my normal user profile, but i created another profile to see if i would have the same problem. I created one and the icons looked like they did when i first installed win 7. I have the screen shots of them but i don't know how to put them on this forum. Basically the icons on my normal user are sometimes really big or sometimes really small, but they're always a little blurry and the white color inside the icons over fills the icon. It's hard to explain

Some Of The Icons In The System Tray Are Greyed Out

Just upgraded from vista to windows 7 on a sony vaio laptop. Some of the icons in the systray are greyed out: e.g. Action center, charge indicator, internet access (router) and speaker volume. Is this correct? I would like the ability to see the signal strength of the router/access point that i am connecting to and the visual indication of the amount of charge remaining is also helpful.

Deleting Unwanted System Files

I need to delete old vista system folder such as "windows, intel, program files etc"

The story so far (but refer other posts from me")

Bought new vista pc (32 bit home premium)
Loaded w7 rc1 32 bit

Removed w7 rc1 but it left system folders. When w7 was released obtained upgrade pack loaded w7 64 bit as a clean start. This presented several options but i chose this setup pc had vista on c: drive. Ie was the system drive.

D: drive was a media drive with no system files after w7 installation pc was setup as multiboot at startup with w7 as the prime, vista a option. The installation changed the drive names swapping the c: and d: w7 was on the now c: and vista was on the now d: i could live with this?

After a while when i was comfortable with w7 i wanted to remove the multi-boot option with w7 and vista and remove all old vista system files on the d: drive. I did this using a program (see earlier post)

However this left the vista system files on the d: drive. I have been trying to delete these old unused (i think) folders.

This is what i have tried:

Tried to delete folders using explorer as administrator - access denied

Changed permission for administrator and user to full control - tried to delete folders using explorer as administrator/user - access denied

Utilized program driver cleaner - the file type ie.system folders does not appear in list so cant delete file (see earlier post)

Utilized drive management program in w7. Note it sees the system drive as the d: drive not the c: drive.

Used cmd.exe as administrator using the rd /s switch command - access denied.

Tried to reformat the d: drive - it tells me it cannot reformat the the system section. Note again the system drive for w7 is the c: drive - this is where all the required system folders are reloaded the w7 install upgrade disk and reinstalled w7 64 bit.

After completion nothing changed - i still cannot delete the old system folders on the d: drive and the system drive is still being seen by drive manager as the d: drive! At the moment i am going round in circles with this how do i delete these old system folders? There is a total of 20gig of unwanted files! It should not be this hard!

Bsod When Opening System Items, Device Manager, Msconfig

I am encountering bsod errors when trying to open any item on the "system" control panel menu, the device manager, and when trying to open msconfig (among others). The following is a description of events leading up to the bsod errors:

1. I decide to upgrade to windows 7 pro from xp. My xp system has worked flawlessly for years. All hardware is working normally and is compatible with windows 7.

2. Windows 7 is installed on a freshly reformatted drive. Drivers and software are installed. All windows updates are applied. Everything is working perfectly and i can freely open device manager, any item in "system, " and msconfig etc. I have not attempted any 'tinkering' yet.

3. First bsod. I decide to edit pagefile.sys by turning off windows control and setting it to a custom size of 4096mb-4096mb. Windows immediately bsods. I restart and find that i can't access any of the windows system tools listed above and decide to reformat and start over (it was a new install and i had nothing to lose).

4. Windows 7 is installed as per step 3. I give pagefile.sys a wide berth and let windows handle it. I decide to perform some maintenance by disabling extraneous programs loading at startup using the program regseeker. I only disable unimportant things like adobe updating tools and the games platform steam etc. I open msconfig to confirm that the disabled startup programs have been disabled. Immediate bsod follows. I restart and find that opening "system" items, msconfig, and device manager all cause immediate bsod. In fact, i can't even right-click on my computer and select "manage" without causing a bsod.

All i can do at the moment is browse the internet and use other simple productivity programs. I can no longer 'tinker' without risking a bsod. I have tried using system restore to various earlier points. None work - i still experience the same symptoms. I have run memory tests on my memory.

I have not tried reseting my hardware because there is no reason to suspect they that have come loose (xp worked for years). I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling hardware drivers, as i hope for someone to interpret my minidumps for me so that i can troubleshoot intelligently. I can provide said minidumps via the preferred method of anyone who can help.

Program Were Uninstalled But Its Icons Are Still On Tray

I had previously uninstalled a few private programs. However when i enter into the "notification area icons" for wins 7, i am still able to see the unwanted program's icons in the list. As it seems that the "uninstall program" doesn't really remove the programs entirely. Therefore, may i ask the best solution to remove the unwanted programs completely? Lastly, i also suspected that the programs are still running and using on my adsl network. How can i stop it permanently from using my network since it is slowing down my internet speed?

I have had since problems connecting to my home wi-fi with the strangest being that though the icon in the tray shows connected with no internet access i have in fact access but other times it does not connect at all. I checked the driver and is the latest and device manager shows the device working well. Ny ideas on how to solve it?

The router is relatively new and has been working fine with the vista machine.

Unwanted Upgrade

I have accidentally upgraded my windows 7 professional oem to ultimate through the upgrade windows anytime tool, i don't have a product key and really don't want to have it, and was wondering if there was anyway of getting my professional back without losing all my stuff. I would really appreciate the help, and please spare the comments about what an idiot i am in doing this or asking me why i did it. Personally i wanted to see what the tool looked like and thought that it would have asked me for a product key before doing anything. Please help.

Monitor Unwanted Auto Reset

I have recently installed windows 7 premium onto my desktop. It has been performing reasonable trouble free but this latest glitch has me perplexed. It has been hot, but the machine was performing well until i left it for a short time and came back to find that the monitor setting had reset to create a blank screen and the "not optimum mode. Recommended mode:1280x1024 60hz". I have restarted the machine and the program is restarting properly, but there is nothing on the screen, just this message.

The machine has quad core q6600 2. 4ghz *mb cache
4gb dual channel ddr2 800 mhz memory
Nvidia geforce 8600gt - 512 mb pci-e graphics card
Samsung syncmaster 710n monitor

I have encountered this on an xp machine and the solution is to interrupt the boot process get into the a mode where you can change the monitor settings, but this was done by a technician. Any solutions?

Live Sync - Unwanted Restoration Of Deleted Files

For the last three months i have had a recurring problem of deleted files from livesync re-appearing suddenly overnight out of the blue. I can verify that they are in fact gone from the directories of all three of my syncing computers (two on xp, one on windows 7). Then suddenly out of nowhere, 24-48 hours later, i get all the files deleted since january 2010 reappearing in their original directories. It's a huge headache and takes hours & hours to delete again manually.

Unwanted Research Pane Appearing In Word Office 2007

Unwanted research pane appearing in word (windows 7, office 2007), keyboard then acts strangely, unpredictably, f1 key then doesn't work. Office 2003 was removed before installation of office 2007, and word 2007 seemed ok previous to this. While typing in a windows7 word doc (new office 2007) i suddenly get the research pane appearing on right of screen, un-asked for. Going to the review tab, proofing area shows research button highlighted (never selected by me); my keyboard (microsoft!) Then locks up and behaves strangely and i can't seem to do anything.

I can't find a way to remove or switch of this unwanted intrusion except by shutting down and rebooting but it has happened again and again. Got a 3000 word report to write, going crazy now. No joy with online help - in fact f1 button stops working during these 'turns'. Has anyone got any similar problems, or ideas where to go from here?

How To Pin Items?

Quick bar fail and thus need help with pinning to start menu okay, here's my frustration. I got windows 7 on my new pc 3 months ago and the first thing i did was google a guide to get quick bar back in some over complicated way since this function was removed and no new proper function to replace it was introduced (see below). (Quick bar was there and set up however it's bugged and keeps disappearing, even if it's saved to a theme.

This might be related to a bug with language bar. So i'm so sick and tired of having to set up and reset up quick bar, i decided to give the "superbar" a new shot. )So this decision was made 2 hours ago right, and i watched like a million guides and read the howto by windows and everything but it's simply not working, because windows insists on doing it its own way. See, this is exactly what you shouldn't code your os to do if you want something to be intuitive, because frankly to get everything working the way i want it was as counter-intuitive as i ever had a windows. I actually read guides to get the simplest of things done.

I always knew the ins and outs of windows versions up until but excluding vista and i never touched a guide. Nyway, with that rant over (yes, 2 hours), here's my issue. My quick bar always has the following four icons shown:firefox, my documents, my partition disk d, desktop. Now, i want these exact icons to be shown on my bar. Yes, i know there's a desktop button to the far right, but that's the issue, it's to the far right. Not fast enough, not good for carpal tunnel. Furthermore, just hovering over it gets this annoying pointless "view your desktop but you can't even click the shade of a window to go to it" feature.

I could find no shortcut that actually brings me to desktop. Windows+spacebar doesn't do that. The issue is i can pin firefox perfectly fine, but i cannot pin documents or whatever. Furthermore, i obviously lose all the quick access to less used software that would normally be here with quick bar under the arrow (please fix quick bar to be an easily configurable, non bugged feature), but i'm ready to lose time over that by having to access it by typing it all out in the search bar. I cannot add my documents or my disk because it adds it to 1 single icon, namely windows explorer, and i obviously don't wanna click 3 times to get something i want in 1 click. I haven't even tried pinning desktop yet because i can already sense windows will disagree. Please help me to either make quick search stay forever or fix the above issues with this pin thing. Am i missing something?

On a sidenote, if you'd simply just make "pin to startbar" the default for anything dragged to the start menu - even a frigging song -, and then allow people to drag it into a different icon like windows explorer, it would be more configurable, more intuitive like you want your windows to be, and i wouldn't have wasted 2 hours. Thank you so much for your time and effort and my apologies for my anger, but this is such a pointless waste of time to get a functionality back that always was there and always was configured in a matter of 1 minute.

Recent Items Problem

My 'recent items' are being redirected to my c: drive, so when i click on them they 'can't be found'. Most are in my shared or home drive. Even when 'pinned', the wrong drive is inserted, even though the path is correct when i use it to open the document. Also, 'pinned' items are not removed when i select 'unpin'.

Sorting Taskbar Items

I read that with windows 7, they have added the ability to reorder the open application windows in the taskbar by dragging them. I tried it and found that it drags all the windows of a specific application. I don't group all windows of a specific application so i am finding that the reordering "feature" doesn't do what i had hoped.

For example. Let's say i have 3 different ie windows open to different webpages. If i drag one of them in the taskbar, it doesn't do anything except drag all 3.
Is there a way to drag just one window to reorder it or is the reordering function useless?

Desktop Items Gone After Reboot

So i came home from work, and when i unlocked my computer it was mentioning something about damaged section on one of my 1tb hdd's. Windows 7 asked for reboot, so i accepted. Pc rebooted and a black screen came up and started to repair something. After 5-6 steps done pc rebooted again and log in screen popped up. After that i logged in and pc fully booted i noticed that my desktop items wore missing. Win 7 asked for recovery, so i accepted that, hoping it would solve my problems. After 10 min, and the recovery done i rebooted my pc.

Pc wore fully booted and icons are still missing.
I tried some trouble shooting, and after 2hr's of reading and clicking in win 7 i gave up.

I can't left click on desktop to multiple mark ether.

I cant find anything wrong, and nether can the troubleshooting program.

I have right clicked my desktop > personalize > change desktop items.
They're all marked in the box.
I have tried to end explorer.exe and boot it up again.
I tried to run backup image.

And nothing seems to help me.
Win 7 is installed on a 150 gb 7200 rpm hdd.
It's a clean hdd with only win 7 installed on it.

From my prospective i have to format c: and do a clean install.

I'll add a picture of my desktop.

Dragged Items Off Screen

I have a program that has a search option within that program. I accidentally dragged the search box off the screen all the way and now i can't see it at all to drag it back. There is no option to restore, resize or maximize the search box. I've tried everything including changing the display resolution and orientation. Alt/tabbing sees the box, but as i stated before there's no way to resize, restore or maximize it to grab it and move it around.

Cannot Open Items From Within Search

I note that many, many folks are having difficulty with explorer in windows 7. This is likely related, but i can't find discussion of this specific issue.

Windows 7 pro x64

When i have the search window open (i use ctrl-f to launch it), it erratically but frequently ceases to allow me to open a file or email message from within the search window. This is usually accompanied by the preview pane ceasing to work. This is then usually followed by explorer crashing.

However, all of the above are somewhat inconsistent. They happen on a nearly daily basis, but in different permutations. Restarting will always resolve the issue, but only temporarily. It sometimes returns immediately, sometimes hours later.

I don't see this behavior on my other systems so perhaps it is a third party software issue. But i can't associate this with any obvious third party software interference.

Has anyone experienced and resolved a similar issue?

And, who can recommend a third party search utility that works well with windows 7 and specifically with outlook 2007? I am completely dependent on searching my email archives, previewing and then opening the messages from within the search window/utility.

Items In Recycle Bin Invisible

I've got 3 systems running on windows 7 (64-bits), but one of them has a malfunctioning recycle bin. When i delete an item or folder, it does not appear in the bin, while the bin itself has a certain size and appears to be filled somehow. I cannot restore the deleted items either, but i can empty the bin.

I've already tried to delete/hide the recycle bin from the desktop and i've checked its properties several times, but i can't find out how to fix it. This problem was present from the very beginning, even before i had installed other applications.

Wildcards, Keywords, Search Items

If i enter track in the search box for folders, it finds 2 files with track. If i enter *track*, it finds 4 files. Why? Are there other search symbols like asterisk? I'm using a book titled ms windows 7 in depth by cowart and knittel. It shows an example of start->search where a 'b' is entered. Every line produced shows some use of "b", but several do not. For example.

Videos(1)
Wildlife

Why wildlife.

Later, a figure showing showing "search results in libraries>" shows a 'b' typed in the search window. Again wildlife shows up. Possibly the same problem above. Further, the figure shows a calendar above the file folder which says "select a date or date range". What's that about?

Somewhere i read w7 allows boolean operators and maybe some search keys like wize: *.txt < 100 mb. Where do i find out more about them?

Deleting / Discovering Items Is Very Slow

I have just built a new computer with windows 7 ultimate, and i am having a problem similar to those described in article id: 976972, but i do not have an nvidia usb ehci chipset, i have an intel x58 chipset (asus p6x58d premium motherboard) with one 160gb intel sdd drive, and 2 6gb/s 600gb wd velociraptor drives. All drives are currently on the 3gb/s sata connectors to avoid issues with the marvell sata controller. (Note: the problem also occurs if the velociraptor drives are on the 6gb/s controllers).

If i copy large media files (wmv or tif) from one velociraptor to the next, the files might copy quickly, but when i go to delete them, i get the message that files are being discovered, and that message can last for 30 to 60 seconds. The file delete process can become very, very long. Clearly others are having the same problem. Turning off file indexing had no effect. Nother note: i have acronis true image home installed, which may be causing some issues. Is there a solution to this problem?

I was changing settings in the start menu properties and all the items are now gone. These are the items that were there initially. Wondering what i could have done so i won't do it again. 2) in the start menu properties i don't see settings to display internet explorer and windows live mail. Do i really need to search for windows live mail in order to pin it to the star menu?
