Chkdsk Won't Run On Startup

Whenever windows starts, i receive a message that says that there may be an inconsistency on my disk, and suggests that i permit chkdsk to run. I immediately receive a message that "disk checking has been canceled. " I was receiving this message when running the 64 bit version of windows 7, which i believe was somewhat problematic with some of me applications, so i decided to to install the 32 bit version, which works fine otherwise. The problem with chkdsk remains.

Chkdsk Cannot Run

My laptop tries to run chkdsk every time i boot up but says the disc is corrupted and cannot run. I also cannot run system restore as it says the disc is corrupted and whenever i try to run backup it freezes the pc after about 80% completion. If i run chkdsk from a command prompt it gets to 4% and freezes the computer.

Apart from that the pc is working normally but i'm concerned that a bigger failure might be around the corner and since i'm struggling to back up i'm even more worried. I'd rather not go through the reinstall windows route so if anyone can offer any suggestions i'd be grateful. Btw my diagnostics tools say everything is aok.

How To Get A Program Run On Startup?

Win 7 home premium i'd like to get a temperature utility program such as realtemp or core temp running on startup.core temp has a setting to have it run on startup, but it doesn't. (Neither of these are installed programs, but standalone .exe files that i run with a shortcut. )I've tried placing a short cut for either program into the startup folder but still have to start either one up manually. If i run system configuration, with either shortcut in the startup folder, it shows it being set for running on startup, but it doesn't run. http://moz.execulink.net/~jspirko/temp/system_config.jpg

Explorer Doesn't Run At Startup

Today i started my computer put in my password at the log in screen and my explorer didn't load. Just a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl+alt+deleted and ran an explorer.exe. After that i thought maybe i could fix the problem by checking if explorer was unchecked in msconfig. When i type msconfig in the start box, my computer automatically restarts.

After that i looked for a fix on this forum and tried to run my command prompt to fix it. That also restarts my computer automatically when i type it. I ran my computer in safe mode, still the explorer didn't load and same results with msconfig and the cmd prompt.

Chkdsk Deleted An Index

I'm running windows 7 professional 64. Today i turned my pc on and it ran chkdsk for no apparent reason. As far as i can tell it deleted the index for one of my music files (filename. Wav), then replaced the index for the orphaned file with filename?Wav. The file still seemed to exist on the computer, but it didn't seem to know what to do with itself. I found that the file name in windows was filename[japanese character]wav, and i'd assume the japanese character i saw was there in place of a ?, As? Is one of the characters that can't be in a file name. Does anyone know what has happened or why? For the record, i can make a new file from the original audio cd, but it bothers me that this has happened at all, and i'm worried that it'll happen again and i'll lose something more important.

64-bit Chkdsk Issue

I got a new hp-dv7 2237cl with pre-installed windows 7 which i've been using for about 4 weeks now. Up until now it's been great, but just in the last couple of days i've been getting a notice that it wants to run chkdsk on startup. Firstly i left it to run, but it just froze on 'press any key in 1 second to cancel', otherwise i press keys and it doesn't respond anyway, or after i restart with the power button it will respond to key presses and skip it.

So today i let it run again and it actually started. It took about 20-30 mins and reported no faults. Then on the next screen with the windows7 logo and black background it mentioned installing 390 registry updates. Then on the blue screen prior to the 'enter your login details' screen it had a notice saying it was 'configuring windows' which it did for a few minutes.

Then i logged in.
I got heaps of errors like
'c+ visual library run time error in c:program files (x86). '
'desktop - you do not have permission to view this folder'

And every file, shortcut and folder now has a padlock icon on it, whenever i try to open anything it jumps up with one of those security warning windows with the program name 'edit security'. About half my programs no longer work and cannot be found, including three of the application links i have on the task bar which include windows media player and windows explorer - it brings up an error saying 'cannot access this file, may have been moved/renamed/deleted'.

And every time i start up any program at random seems to stop responding and brings up a '. Program has stopped responding, windows is checking for solutions' window. Adding to the security thing, firefox no longer has any permissions to save cookies, or any other info as it keeps bringing up a notification that its sending information over an unencrypted connection on every page load at microsoft.com.

Everything in my documents folder is no longer there. Whether its deleted, in another user account or just hidden, its not there.

Also, it doesnt seem like the applications have security privileges to save information? It's got a hp dock which keeps bringing up an error that it cant read its' own xml file, and every time i start up the pc 'rockstar games social club' requests i agree to the terms and conditions, something which it'd normally ask once and save my response.

How do i fix this without losing any more of my information?

Windows Boots To Chkdsk Error Recovery

Original title: windows does not load - bootscreen -> bsod -> chkdsk -> error recovery -> repeats i've had my computer for about 2 years now, and, up until this point, have had very few problems. However, i recently experienced a large problem - windows will not load. The first thing i do is turn on my computer. The boot-screen comes on and remains on for a long time, at least 5 minutes. After that, a bsod appears for about 3 seconds, and the computer restarts.

The bootscreen reappears, and it goes to chkdsk, which does nothing for about 5 minutes and then runs for about 30 minutes. After it's done, the computer restarts and the boot-screen appears, stays on for about a minute, and then goes to windows error recovery. This searches for problems, "fixes" them, and then restarts the computer. After it restarts, the cycle continues. I'm running windows 7 ultimate x 64.

Win 7 Startup

I'm running a dell e521 which started life with vista. I upgraded months ago to windows 7. The upgrade went quite smooth. This past week i was performing a system restore to a previous date when during the process the computer rebooted which is normal. I got the dell logo, then the windows 7 start-up screen with the four little revolving lights. Then the computer progressed to the black screen with the cursor in the center and froze at that screen. I have been unable to get past this screen since. I tried rebooting with the windows 7 repair disc but with no success.

I have since bought and installed a new hard-drive and was able to extract most but not all of my files from my external hard-drive. I would like to know if there is a solution to fixing my old drive so that i can retrieve all of my data and perhaps use it as a second drive in my computer. Note; when this problem hard-drive is connected i can't get past this black screen so i cannot access my computer to find a fix.

Unmute On Startup

I purchased my laptop with vista on it, with an upgrade to 7 home premium when it was released. I've since installed, but now the system automatically turns the sound on at startup. It never had a problem with vista, and i didn't mind that the very first time i booted into 7

This is particularly annoying when i'm in class and someone sends me a message and the whole class think's i'm talking away. I've had more dirty looks from instructors in the past few months than i can remember.

I know i can go through and disable all the sounds, and switch between sound schemes, but i would rather not bother going through that path 2-3 times a day. How do i get my sound settings to stay where i put them?

No Startup Folder

Recently, i put a program in the startup folder in

C:usersadminappdataroamingmicrosoftwindowsstart menuprogramsstartup

I later decided that i didn't want the program to startup every time i log on, but instead of deleting the program i accidentally deleted the startup folder instead. The folder is no longer in the recycling bin. Does anyone have any idea of how to replace my startup folder because i would really like to put some programs in there.

I've tried using task scheduler, but didn't find it to be very effective. What i really need is a new startup folder.

Freezes On Startup

I have a computer that is one day old and will not start up (windows 7 home premium 64 bit). It will freeze at "windows starting. " It will freeze under safe mode at the classpnp.sys file. I have attempted to boot from a recovery dvd and it will not not not boot from it and freeze, and the bios settings are set to boot from the optical drive 1st. It will freeze when i try to enter the repair console.

I am out of ideas as to what to do, and i can find no answers online.

The comlete story is as follows: i was installing various programs fine (office, symantec, turbotax 04-09, etc). After installing adobe photoshop, the os "freaked out. "  I have no other way to describe it. Various components of the screen starting flickering (not the entire screen, but certain parts of programs). The touchpad became unresponsive, jerky, and seemed to click on its own. The computer began a shutdown sequence - because updates had queued, those began installing once the os logged off. Upon power on, i made it to the welcome screen. Each time, the touchpad was unresponsive, and the keyboard seemed to have its own inputs, because it would freeze and lock me out of the system.

After a few cold shutdowns, the touchpad and keyboard stopped acting weird (i know this sounds crazy, but i swear its true), and i was able to log in. I created the recovery dvds using the vaio console, uninstalled photoshop, and did a system restore to before the photoshop installation. The computer shut down, but has never been able to completely boot into the windows welcome screen.

Startup Faliure

On june 23, 2010, my computer received an auto-update from microsoft. I believe that that my computer restarted once after the update, but since then, it fails to start up at all. The computer does not usually get as far as providing me with the repair screen options, but occasionally does. Those efforts were unsuccessful. I have even tried making the repair using the os software disc. However, that was not successful. Usually, i end up with a completely black screen. Dditionally, i tried to restore the computer to three prior periods, but each attempt has failed. I received the following information after the failed repair efforts:

Problem event name: startup repair offline problem signature 01: 6. 1. 7600. 16385 problem signature 02: 6. 1. 7600. 16385 problem signature 03: unknown problem signature 04: 21201010 problem signature 05: auto failure problem signature 06: 4 problem signature 07: bad patch os version: 6. 1. 7600. 2. 0. 0. 256. 1 local id: 1033

I'm guessing that i got dinged in the update that was downloaded. Regardless, i just want to get my computer back up and working. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Yes, i have disconnected all of the external devices and still have made no progress with this problem.

Startup Programs In Win 7

Docked vs. Undocked hardware profiles. As we all know in xp i could have programs like outlook and response point load on startup when i am docked at the office. But at home where i did not need outlook and response point to load at startup they would not because they i was undocked and they were not in the startup up folder for undocked. I am aware that this hardware profiles are no longer an option in 7. But is there a was to have some programs startup when i am at the office and not when i am at home?

I had tried several times now, but the same happend. When i upgraded first time from xp to win 7 everything went ok until a few days later. Then started the taskbar to freeze, i could not click any items in the taskbar etc. Until i start the task manager by pressing #ctrl-alt-del" when i had dne that the task bar can be used again !I had tried to run 5-6 different virus scanners, i have avg installed, nothing from any of them, i thought in the beginning it could be a problem with the csrss.exe file as in the task-manger can i not see the properties, it not come up at all, also it not show who user ise the csrss.exe, my notebook does that !

I had re-installed the win 7 2 times again, and now it seems like the taskbar freeze at sratup, so when had had started the task-manager 1 time it works all ok ! That is quite strange !Any have a brilliant idea about what is wrong ! My computer is an acer stationary, 2 gb ram. Intel core duo e4500 2. 2 ghz. Windows / 32 bit.

Taskbar Freezing After Startup

When windows starts the taskbar is frozen, and i cannot click on anything. All icons on the desktop are not affected and can be clicked. When i click ctrl+alt+del, then cancel it, it goes back to normal and works fine.

I was on windows vista when this was happening. Once a installed windows 7, with an otherwise empty computer, it is still happening. As there is nothing else on my pc now, i presume it is microsoft related, or hardware.

I have tested the memory and its fine. I have checked the temperatures and there fine. The bios is upto date. There are no virus's or malware present.

I have now ran out of ideas, and for the life of me cannot work it out

I have checked on google, and used many tech forums to no avail?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

Have just moved a few pc's at home to windows 7 (one ultimate and the others home premium) and am having problems with startup programs not starting. The programs are all in msconfig as startup items but when i log in they don't start. All of the users are administrators but the only way to get them to start is via the start menu. When i do start them it comes up with the warning about do you want the following program make changes to your computer. Is there anyway to make these programs run at startup?

Black Screen At Startup

Bsod? With cursor? Updated my pc to windows 7 after vista gave me the true bsod a long time ago. I couldn't make a connection to my network's router. I restarted my pc using start->shut down when i pressed the power button, startup was same as usual. Until it got stuck on the black screen with cursor. Unable to start in safe mode. F8 will not do anything. Crtl-alt-del shuts my pc down instantly. I'd tell you the specifics of my pc if i thought that would be helpful but i've been running windows 7 since it came out with no problems. It's been over a week at least since i've downloaded anything.

Quicktime Error On Startup

Machine = dell studio running 64 bit windows vista with sp 2. I installed the latest version of quicktime. There was an error at the end of the install, but no error message beyond "windows installer has stopped. " Nothing specific. When i try to run quicktime, i get the "please install apple application support' error. I did some research and found that it was suggested that i re-register the vbscript.dll. I tried this, but got an error code = 0x80004004 message saying the call to the registration server failed. I don't know if this has anything to do with the original problem.

Startup Issue With Upgrades

I purchased a new computer a couple of months ago and have had on-going problems when turning the system on. Windows 7(64bit) was loaded by the supplier. To start with start up repair would loop two ot three times and then be unable to fix the problem, after re-loading and up grading using the disc, i now have the problem that start up repair fixes the problem and all appears ok. On turning off the system, there are always 14 upgrades. Leave the computer for several hours and turn on, start up repair fixes the problem. Shut down and there are 14 upgrades again and so on.

Error Message Upon Startup

I'm not certain this is the forum i should be in but if i am in the wrong place, please someone redirect me to the correct place okay ?! Upon start up when i turn on, boot up or whatever you wanna call it, i always receive this error message and i have done everything i can think of to get rid of it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled programs that i thought that particular .dll file
Came with and on and on but nothing has worked.

Error message: the program can't start because msvcr71.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem.

I have searched and brought all of the crazies out of the woodwork with their "magical fixes" if you install this registry scan and that registry scan but i have enough smarts to know that is all they do is scan, none of them actually fix the issue.

Anyway, is there a simple fix for this. I ran a system restore but my restore points don't go back far enough and the error message box is still there! Lost

System Freezes During Startup

After behaving normally for two weeks or more, my computer (using retail copy of win 7 professional 32 bit system) will not start up.

It freezes during the "microsoft starting" phase. The 4-color logo never gets formed up and that's it. I have tried all or most of the config and reboot options but nothing happens i always get stuck at the same place. When i use the option that shows the 32 bit system drivers getting loaded it never gets past . Disk.sys or the next one . Snp.sys. And that screen ends with "please wait".

There were some downloads/updates installed on last good day (thursday 1/21/2010). I might have downloaded firefox that day as well. One more thing i set up a (wireless) network but i only have one win 7 machine so i don't think it will do anything for me.

Upon the next start-up two days later - i experienced this trouble that will not go away. I do not have a boot-up disk but when i try to start with the original dvd media the same thing happens - it appears to read the disk then the "microsoft starting" begins and ends just as already described.

Freezes On Startup Logo

I have windows7 home premium and am doing a clean install. The installation completes, but when windows 7 starts up for the first time, it freezes at the "starting windows" after the little balls have come together to make the windows logo. Keyboard strokes and mouse movements do not do anything, and i have no choice but to restart the computer by physically pressing and holding the power button. Windows recovery and repair doesn't fix it. I have a gigabyte ga-h55m-ud2h motherboard, intel i3-530 cpu, and 4gb memory, the boot drive is a sataii western digital drive. I removed 2gb of memory and tried the install again with the same result. What now?

Issue With Startup And Repair

So i have windows 7 on an alienware. It's been running great, but i recently started up my system and it was stuck at the screen that has the windows logo and says "starting". I turned off my system and ran the repair program. It eventually fixed the issue and started up, but now the system loads up about 5 times as long as before. It use to take under a minute easily and now about 5 but it does start up. I've run my anti-virus and no virus detected, i cleaned up the disk, and i turn off my system properly. Is there anyway to fix my start up situation?

Win 7 Startup Sequence

I want to reduce the number of programs that are automatically started when i boot my win7 pro 64bit os. I went to the system configuration (sg) tab under config.sys, opened the windows help file to ensure i acted appropriately and was told that sg was not the appropriate way to permanently stop a program from loading - the uninstall/change program handled that function.

I wanted to stop itunes from loading. I initiated the change command, but was offered only the choice to uninstall or repair. I chose repair. No change to the boot process changed nor were any options offered. I unchecked itunes in the system configurator and itunes stopped loading.

What can i do to honor windows recommendation to not use sg for permanent changes but still be able to prevent certain programs from loading? I want these programs available but only when i want to use them.

No Bios Screen On Startup

No bios seen on startup - wrong resolution when finished startup but have to put the laptop to sleep and re-wake to finish startup. Acer 5920g; black screen on start-up or re-start

System:
- 5920g
- 8600m nvidia
- 2gb
- Vista home premium upgraded to windows 7 home

Symptoms:
- On start up no bios details and screen stays black but i hear the windows start up sound
- When plugging in the external monitor unable to see laptop screen as a selectable option (so fn+f5/fn+f6 do not work)
- Started about 5 weeks ago.

Actions:
- Put computer to sleep fn+f4
- Wake up and get resolution of 1200 by 768
- Re-set resolution to 1280 by 800
- If put to sleep and re-woken no impact continues to work fine
- Tried with an external monitor and works fine – can see the bios start-up routine

What has been done:
- Re-installed drivers sourced from acer and nvidia
- Refreshed the bios (source acer)
- Re-set the bios defaults
- Got confused with some many hardware suggested issues but convinced it is not a back-light or inverter problem

Will a reload back to vista or a clean install of windows 7 solve the bios post screen and resolution issues?
