Cannot Upgrade From Vista Home As Straight Upgrade

Just obtain windows 7 professional and it states it is an upgrade for windows vista. When i start the upgrade the program states that because i have vista home i cannot do a straight upgrade. The box does not say so. Installing the windows 7 professional as an upgrade i find i cannot do it from windows vista home as a straight upgrade. It must be a full clean installation. The documentation does not say so.

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium

Over 3 years ago i purchased an hp computer with xp mce on it. At the time of purchase the computer was eligible for a free upgrade to vista, via a requested dvd(or cd), which i received. I later did the upgrade with an "in place", so as to not lose xp programs. It worked well. I am now considering upgrading vista home premium to win 7 home premium, with an in-place upgrade. My question is do i purchase the upgrade, or full version of 7? The computer meets the microsoft win 7 upgrade eligible requirements.

Vista Home Premium Upgrade Licensing

Let say i have a client that is on windows vista home premium and wants to go to windows 7 pro or ultimate. I know i could theoretically go from vista home premium to 7 home premium and do an anytime upgrade to ultimate. My question is if i do this, would i an upgrade license for ultimate work or would i need an home premium upgrade license and then an anytime license to ultimate?

Vista Home Premium In Place Upgrade Problem

I have been having trouble with updates for a long time (a bit over 6 months. ) I tried to do an upgrade in place with my system instad of continuing to beat a dead horse (fixing whatever is wrong with updates - nigh impossible to do) or taking the slegehammer approach (clean reinstall of os)

The upgrade in place is fron vista home premium sp1 media. (I'm running vista home premium sp1 with the botched update problems. ) It appears as though it's going to work but then when i login after it's complete a get a dialog that says: this version of windows could not be installed. Your previous version of windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it. Before trying to install this version of windows again, check onlin to see if it is compatible with your computer.

Another dialog also comes up that says: windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown. A problems caused windows to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available. Finally, another dialog comes up that says: address a problem with audio driver (stwrt.sys) audio driver has stopped worknig properly. To solve this problems go to your computer manufacturer's website and search for audio driver updates.

Notes: i had the sound card completely disabled (via devmgmt. Msc) during this process. There is no update to the audio driver: it is the most recent. The computer is running vista home premium sp1. It is clearly capable of running in that configuration. (When i purchased it, it was running vista home premium before any sps had been issued. )

Win 7 Home Premium Upgrade Will Not Work With Vista Business

I purchased a pavillion laptop dv9000 from hp with windows vista business 32 bit. I also purchased a windows 7 home premium upgrade (32 bit) from microsoft, intending to use it on my desktop computer, but i bought a new desktop with windows 7 instead. I want to upgrade the windows vista business on my laptop but the windows 7 home premium upgrade will not work with vista business; i.e. , I need windows 7 professional or ultimate upgrade. Already having an unused windows 7 home premium upgrade, what is the most economical way for me to upgrade my laptop to windows 7?

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium 32-bit Failed Installation

I am attempting to upgrade from windows vista home premium 32-bit to windows 7 home premium 32-bit. I obtained this upgrade from a download, and my installation is failing.

At 21% of the way through the "expanding windows files" process, the installation quits with the following message:

"The upgrade was canceled. Any changes that were made to your computer during the upgrade process will not be saved. " And in a bow below that message: "setup can't continue. Your computer will now restart and your previous version of windows will be restored. "

No reason is given for the cancellation of the upgrade. I have, however, run the windows upgrade advisor, which has shown that my computer is fully compatible. All programs that it advised me to remove have been removed. I've also removed all external devices from my computer during the installation.

I fear i may have a corrupted installation file of some kind but am not sure of anything. I'd appreciate if anyone has any suggestions, or has been in this situation before and or knows what to do.

Upgrade Vista Premium To Win7 Home Premium

Bought a hp dv7 just before win 7 came out with promise of an upgrade to win7 when it was launched. When the upgrade disk eventually arrived in feb time we had a guy from hp come and do the upgrade. Unfortunately he had not done one before and was a hardware guy so i do not have a clue what he did but some 7 hours later it appears to be working. Unfortunately it seems to be unstable. We have strange things like when opening windows mail and using on closing we have to click on the x twice to close it, the first it appears to close but the second one then closes it.

Also i have just tried to install the latest quickbooks and the pos part locks up, installs okay on the hp i bought with win 7 on already. As part of qb it installs google desktop which causes the entry area in the taskbar to flash and a message keeps coming up that google desktop has had to close down and you need to run it again from the start menu. Tried running a system check package of the microsoft website but it failed with a runtime error. I suspect it is the vista to win 7 upgrade that is the cause or interaction with the hp stuff that gets installed.

Win 7 Home Upgrade On Mac

I went through the procedure to partition my hard drive for bootcamp, then inadvertently loaded the windows 7 upgrade disc instead of first installing my full version of xp. I try to close out of it, but all it does is restart to the install disc each time. I get prompted for drivers that i don't have (though if i did, it will allow me to upload them from a thumb drive. ). Does anyone know 1) how i can eject the windows 7 disc so i can first install xp or 2) where i can download the correct drivers so i can complete the install.

Upgrade Home Premium To Professional

Background: recently purchased an hp desktop computer that came with windows 7 home premium 64-bit. Since then i upgraded to windows 7 professional via a retail copy purchased locally.

Question: is there a chance of any incompatibility/conflict/? In using a non-hp winodws 7 upgrade package? I seem to have multiple errors on the machine except in safe mode and cannot seem to run long before the system crashes. All my hardware checks pass, but i get blue sceens on just about anything you can get them on - memory_management, ntfs.sys, bad_poool_header, pfn_list_corrupt, system service exception, page_fault_in_nonpaged area, registry error, irqnle.

Upgrade From Home Basic To Ultimate

I will be ordering a custom hp dv8t soon, and it will come with windows 7 home premium. I can purchase 7 ultimate for about 100 bucks after academic discount, so it would be cheaper than spending 200 bucks getting ultimate pre-installed. I was wondering if it comes with 7 home premium, can i purchase 7 ultimate and do an in place upgrade, or is a fresh install mandatory for this?I was thinking, maybe after i purchase 7 ultimate, go into windows anytime upgrade, would i be able to enter the key off of 7 ultimate i purchased from academic superstore and upgrade in place?

Tried to upgrade with windows anytime upgrade but get error message: "key entered is for an edition of windows that does not work with win. Anytime upgrade. Enter different key. " I tried to upgrade with win 7 pro dvd, and was told to use anytime upgrade. I contacted acer support about this and was told it is not an issue with installed software, and they tried to forward my call to a paid help line. Can anybody help?

Home Premium Upgrade Reinstall

I recently successfully installed windows 7 home premium using an upgrade disk onto my dell laptop that had vista basic with sp1 installed. I used the custom option instead of the upgrade option to do this. Everything worked well and my product activated as required. This also put a windows. Old folder on my laptop (which eats up a lot of space)

Here is my issue though - i have since found out that, after clicking the custom option, i had the ability to click on the drive option (advanced) button that would allow me to actually delete and then create a new partition for a completely clean install, which i would have preferred.

I have no problem at this point re-installing my os, but since i have a windows 7 upgrade disk and not the "full" product, if i delete and create a new partition will the installer still recognize that i am doing an upgrade or will i have a problem re-activating my product?

Ms Works 9 Issues With Home Upgrade

My parents after upgrading vista home to win 7 home had allof the icons change to wordpads. The icons are also inactive. On the start menu if a program is clicked a dialogue box opens stating can't open file at this location, or file may be corrupt. I walked them through unistalling ms works 9 (ms works, ms powerpoint viewer, and live office) reboot and all files reappear and work properly.

Tried to reinstall ms works and it returns to the wordpad icons and locked out of programs. You can open a word (works) file from the library fine but not from the start menu or icons. Had them uninstall for now. Until i can get a better answer. Any thoughts?

Home Premium To Ultimate Upgrade

My questions is about upgrading windows 7 home premium to windows 7 ultimate. At his moment im using windows 7 home premium, but im thinking of upgrading to windows 7 ultimate. But im not sure wich version of ultimate i need to do this. I was thinking of buying the full version of ultimate because when i need to reinstall windows later, only this disk will be sufficient.

Later i noticed that there is an upgrade version of windows 7 ultimate, but its available at the same price as the full version.

So basically, i want to know if i can upgrade windows 7 home premium to windows 7 ultimate using the full version of windows ultimate, or do i need the upgarde version?

Upgrade Home To Pro, Drawbacks?

I've identified desirable laptop vendors and am trying to select a 15. 6" model with windows 7 pro 64-bit *and* blu ray. This seems to be rare, so i was thinking about going with windows 7 home, then upgrading to pro. From the win2k days, i still have this expectation that upgrading to pro is not as good as installing pro from scratch (functionality not quite right). I was wondering if there has been enough consumer experience with windows 7 for anecdotal feedback on whether such upgrade wrinkles have been ironed out in windows 7? If not, what kind of issues can expect from upgrading a laptop that was designed for a native windows home version?

P. S. I know that asus and toshiba (my desired vendors) have 15. 6" models with windows 7 pro and blu ray, but newsgroups report that the asus model has a pervasive high-pitch hum when the i3/5 goes into low power mode, and the toshiba model is only available in the u. S. And i don't want to have to deal remotely. I'm in canada. P. P. S. I have other criteria too, but blu ray and windows 7 pro seem to be the main conflict. Hence the question about upgrading a windows home model that has blu ray. P. P. P. S. Is there a way to access this group through google groups, like the microsoft. Public. * Groups? It'd be way more convenient.

How To Upgrade From Home Premium To Ultimate?

Is there someone out there who can help me with this problem as i am going round the twist. Okay here goes, are you sitting comfortably then i shall begin. I bought a new computer and it had o/s win7 home premium set up on it and the disk etc. Was with it, i wanted to upgrade to ultimate but was put off by the price, i heard of this site that was software4students and when i got on it was able to buy the upgrade at a much reduced price, anyway i have tried to upgrade but have failed because it asks me for a key to activate it but i have only the product key, it tells me that i have to do a clean upgrade not a custom one, i bought it because i could do a custom upgrade as i am not in the slightest pc wise or a tecky at computer work, i can do the usual stuff but the ultimate upgrade is sat on my shelf and after trying to contact software4students and getting nowhere then microsoft, who wanted £45 to a question, i don't think so, i am left with a feeling that i have been conned as i have very little money and it took an age for me to afford the upgrade as i cannot work due to being disabled, a clean upgrade means i have to clear my pc and do the upgrade but it will come to nothing as i will be asked for the upgrade key and i do not have it so any help will be so very welcome. One thing please keep it very basic and simple as i am not very pc wise and able to do programming stuff, hope someone can help as i would like to get this up and running.

Anytime Upgrade From Home Premium To Ultimate

I have windows 7 home premium in spanish installed in my computer. I do not speak spanish, so i would like to change the language to english. For this purpose, i would like to upgrade my os to windows 7 ultimate. I have 2 questions:1. Are windows 7 "anytime upgrade" packages language specific (i.e. In order to upgrade my windows 7 home premium spanish, do i need to purchase spanish version of anytime upgrade package)? If yes, where can i find it in us?2. Anytime upgrade packages are not released in my country yet. I will travel to us next week, so i plan to purchase a package there. Can i install the package when i return back to my country? Or, will it check my ip and tell that i am not in us so cannot upgrade.

Upgrade Issues From Starter To Home Premium

So i just bought a dell mini with windows 7 starter on it. I have also recently purchased a copy of windows 7 home premium or my home pc. I used the activation code from the windows 7 premium with the mini it upgraded the mini from stater to home premium, but a few days later it rejected the activation code because it is in use on my home pc. I have no issue buying the upgrade, however when i go to windows 7's site there is no option for this. I keeps seeing that i have home premium installed even though it is not activated. It gives me an option to upgrade to professional. Any thoughts?

Upgrade From Vista

I just ran the windows 7 upgrade advisor beta and it says this : you can do an in-place upgrade to the 32 bit windows 7 home premium or ultimate. If you choose to upgrade to a different edition you will need to preform a clean installation. Does this mean i could not do a in-place install to windows 7 professional 32-bit ? And why cant i ? Is there anyway i can? I would like to find a way since my school is part of the msdnaa and windows 7 professional is available for free to me as a student. Please don't be to technical in any replies, i am only a little above an average computer user.

Upgrade From Vista Getting Stuck At 87%

Windows 7 home premium (x32) upgrade from vista hp (x32) is consistently getting stuck at 87% in the "gathering files, settings, and programs" stage. The compatibility tool indicates no conflicts. I've uninstalled virus protection, tv tonic, itunes, and logitech quickcam (as previously indicated by the compatibility tester. ) It does say i should download an updated realtek rtl8187 wireless driver to install *after* win 7 is installed.

I've left it running up to 14 hours, stops at the same place (87%) every time. (Though the file count is different everytime, so the actual absolute number varies. (e.g. This time it's 503490 of 592438. ) C:windowssetupact. Log hasn't been written to since the install first began, and indicates no errors. Setuperr. Log is empty. Any ideas?

Vista To Win7 Upgrade

Last year i purchased a pc with vista home premium 64-bit installed by the manufacturer, no os disk included in the box. I want to upgrade to windows 7 professional 64-bit. I am looking to purchase an oem copy from a local retailer. It doesn't seem financially necessary for me to pay $70 more for the cardboard, plastic and extra paper that retail version includes. I do understand that an oem copy can only be installed on one pc, however, this is not a concern to me. My only concern is if i can successfully install the oem software onto my system.

Free Upgrade From Vista

I bought a new dell laptop with vista installation disks with the promise from that i get a free upgrade to windows 7 when it was released. Now that windows 7 is released i would like to upgrade because my desktop program keeps breaking and my 3 month computer is being slowed to a crawl which is completely unacceptable . Theres so much clutter on the website that id sit here ours trying to find the upgrade link. So please if someone could go about explaining where this link is, i would be very much appreciated since i really don't have to go on and chew them out on their lies.

The whole reason why i didn't decide to pay the extra $150 to go to my favorite os, windows xp, is because of the hope to going to windows 7. The computer is the new studio 1555 so dont try to tell me that it was not out when the windows 7 free upgrade from vista was being incorporated into new laptops.

Vista Refusing To Upgrade

I just spent 28 hours downloading my student copy of windows 7 from microsoft it's not cheating (i'm also getting a dvd version in the mail in a couple of weeks but couldn't wait)

Now when it comes to installing, it will not let me upgrade from vista home premium to windows 7, despite the fact that the upgrade advisor said i can upgrade. It gave me the option but then said i cannot and need to do a clean installation.

I don't understand? I cannot do a clean installation either until my dvd arrives and would prefer  to do the upgrade instead.

Windows vista home premium cannot be upgraded to windows 7 professional. You can choose to install a new copy of windows 7 professional instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing windows, back them up to an external location such as a cd, dvd, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of windows 7 professional, click the back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select "custom (advanced)".
