Error When Trying To Copy/paste File From External Drive

I have a new computer with a windows 7 professional 64-bit operating system (500gb drive; 8gb ram). I have two external drives, each of which has a vpc on it. I use the vpcs for training purposes. They are virtually (no pun intended) identical, so one functions as a backup if something goes wrong with the other. One vpc has problems, so i want to overwrite it with the . Vmc and . Vhd files from the other vpc.

I've done this before (on my previous computer, which had windows xp-pro). I successfully copied the . Vmc file and the hard disk 2 . Vhd file, but it won't copy the hard disk 1 . Vhd file. I get an error message (error 0x8007045d) that says there is an i/o device error. How can i fix this so that it will copy the file?

Explorer Will Not Copy 8gb Iso Image File To External Drive

Windows explorer will not copy an 8gb iso image file to an external drive with 185gb of free space says file is too large for the destination file system. I tried copying an 8gb iso image file to an external drive with 185gb of free space and windows explorer keeps giving me the message "file is too large for the destination file system".

Then i tried copying the same file to a separate partition on my hard drive and it worked smoothly. I also tried copying a folder containing the sae content and about the same size and it also copied easily. I don't understand why it will not copy the 8gb iso file. By the way i am using windows 7 ultimate.

Cannot Copy / Paste Large Files From Usb

I tried drag and drop. I tried ctrl+c & ctrl+v. Neither work when trying to move a large folder (7-8gb) from my usb to my hard drive. I feel like i am the only one having this bug. It works with smaller files from my usb to my hard drive - even up to a couple gigs only took a couple minutes.
Update:† xp says "cannot copy file. Cannot read from the source file or disk. " So this is an issue with the usb.

Copy Slow To Or From External Hard Drive

I have a 64 bit i7 960 processor running windows 7 home premium when i try to copy a file to or from a usb connected 1 terabyte ext drive the copy starts out at 40mb a sec and degrades down to 2 or3 mb a second some times it drops below 1 mb a sec. I copy large video files so this is really affecting my work. I also have 2 internal 1 tb hard-drives and the copy between those work at great speed( 40 to 70 mb a sec)so far i have turned off rdc. Reloaded the the usb drivers, formatted the drive. Started in safe mode, installed teracopy. Turned off file indexing. Nothing works. The drive works great on my xp machine.

Cannot Read / Copy Jpg From External Drive

I just upgraded to windows 7 premium 64bit. Then i started to copy jpegs from my external hard drive to my new pc internal hard drive. This external hard drive was managed by xp previously.

Suddenly windows 7 complained. It tells me that the file or path does not exist. With some investigation i found that all jpegs larger than 1mb cannot be read or copied. Smaller files are fine. Then i tried to copy my latest photos from my camera's sd card. Same problem. However, windows 7 then asked if i wanted to fix a problem on the card. I decided not to and "imported" the images by choosing it as one of the options in the pop-up box. It then worked.

So manually trying to read, open, thumbnail preview or copy any jpeg larger than 1mb does not work at all only since i have moved from xp to windows 7 64bit. Why is this? How can i solve the problem?

Shadow Copy Storage File Issue

I noted the amt of free space on my c: drive drop almost 5gb overnight. I had not installed anything new so it seemed a mystery. Windows did install several critical updates. But nothing equaling 5gb. Knowing a restore point was created before the update i checked under advanced settings system protection. And my setting for max usage is at the 4% (23. 24gb)which is where i set it. However, current usage size is 27. 34gb. The difference certainly explains away most of the 5gb of free space i lost overnight.

I did run the shadow space command from a cmd line to be sure it showed the same information, and, it did. I thought as the space reached its max allotted size that it would drop older restore points and not exceed the allotted space? Since i have the max usage set at 23. 24gb. Then how is it that the current usage is 27. 34gb

Cannot Copy Large File Between Usb Drives

Using windows 7. Have two 1tb ntfs drives and i'm trying to copy a 600g music folder from drive g to drive e. Original file from a third drive was put trough a tag editor and saved to drive g†successfully. Have tried copy/paste, drag and drop and send to options. The drag and select show 13k items selected but when released over the intended folder, the copy files window pops up then†disappears. Trying break into smaller transfers, was able to transfer half the "a"'s (716 folders) then was only able to transfer single folders.

There are some files where the location was lost in the renaming process or folders that got duplicated which show up as conflicts or options to skip copy or merge two folders in the file copy process at the end of the transfer. I am able to transfer files between the drives, just not this large folder. Western digital support says it's an operating system issue. I†acquired†the original files from four†separate†drives †by drag and drop recently with no issues. In compiling all the folders, maybe some errors have crept in, but i can't figure out how to find and eliminate them.

Error Message - Disk Is Corrupt Or Unreadable - External Hard Drive

Seagate freeagent go 500g external hard drive usable in xp professional works fine, but when i try to use it on windows 7. I get the error message "disk is corrupt or unreadable ". Installed windows professional x64 11/16/09. Everything works fine, all updated drivers for motherboard chipset. Tried everything, i can plug it into windows 7 pro x64 and get an immediate prompt to reformat, followed by disc is corrupt or unreadable. I can disconnect immediately and plug into a xp home computer and it works just fine.

Tried doing the security allow all users so its not locked from this new computer, didn't work, installing drivers hasn't worked, basically at a loss here, not enough room to back it up on the working computer, format on the new, and reinstall it on newly formatted hdd.

Network File Copy Hangs When Device List Changes

This is a problem with two parts.

Part 1: the first is that if i start a copy of a large file from a network drive to a local disk, and then, whilst that copy is happening, dismount a drive such as a usb drive, then there is a good chance that the copy will stall and never complete. The copy progress dialog remains, and continues to animate, however the actual copy process stops. This has happened ever since i installed win7 ultimate, and after this happens the only way out is to press the reset button. This leads me into the second part.

Part 2: once the copy has stalled, there is no way to cancel it, or to kill the process doing the copy. In the past, with winxp, i would use task manager to kill explorer.exe if something like this happened, but killing this "hung" copy seems to be beyond task manager with win7. From my reading, the act of killing a process is more of a request with win7 whereas with winxp it was a command
.
I have tried to use the taskkill from within a command prompt to kill the hung process. Taskkill reports success, however the hung process remains, as does the copy progress dialog. My last resort is to restart the pc, but when i do this, i get a warning about having to force the process to die. I accept the warning and tell it to do so, but the pc never, ever, ever restarts. My only option now is to press the reset button. This problem has been here since win7 was released. I'd like to see a solution.

1. The copy process should not hang, or if it depends on a stable device list, then the dismount should be forced to wait.

2. If i am an administrator, i should be able to force any process to die.

Are there any other options?

File Transfer To External Hdd

External hdd: adata nh-92 500gb
Computer: asus g51jx

I'm trying to move an iso file from my desktop to the aforementioned external hdd, but when i drag the file over to the hdd, i get a window that pops up saying that "the file is too large for the destination file system. " Is the problem really because the file is too big (7. 86 gb), or is there something that might be wrong with my computer? I think it may be because of my laptop because i got this file from my friend's external hdd, so if he could copy it on to his external, why can't i?

File Error Copying Vob Files To Drive

I have been trying to copy a few . Vob files from a non-copyrighted dvd to my hard drive and keep running in to the same problem. After the transfer is complete, it looks like the full file is there but†it shows that the clip length is only :13 seconds†rather than the 35mins of the original file. Sure enough when i try to watch it, the clip appears corrupted, jumping around before ultimately freezing. Is this an error in the transfer, of the original dvd or something in 7 i just don't know about. I've only been using 7 for a few months and this is the first time i've tried to transfer vob files on this particular laptop.

Usb External Hdd File Transfer Stops

I have a dell xps m1530 laptop. I upgraded to w7 pro 32 bit via a clean install from vista home premium. My external usb† hdd (freecom toughdrive pro 320gb) used to work fine, and still does on other computers, including xp, vista and another w7 desktop machine. On my upgraded laptopi get problems transferring large files from the usb drive, the drive light goes out (but i can still hear it whirring), the copy operation hangs, and i can no longer browse through the drive in windows explorer. Bizarrely the drive still shows up in "safely remove hardware".

It also shows up still in device manager, with no warning symbols next to any device. I've tried seeing if the drive shows up in disk management, but that won't start unless i unplug it. My problem seems similar to the well documented problem with external drives on w7 64bit and nvidia chipsets with over 4gb ram. That issue has a hotfix. My system is 32bit though. I tried the hotfix just in case but to no effect. Any ideas microsoft?

Can't Copy From A Usb Drive

I can copy files from a cd why can't i copy from a usb drive? I know this is hard to believe but i'm having even more trouble with windows 7 security than i had with vista. At least with vista it was easy to turn off uac. So far with windows 7 i have only succeeded in turning down message levels so i get fewer messages for each failure.

I am trying to copy files from a windows 7 desktop to a usb drive and then to a different machine's windows 7 desktop. The target win 7 os say's i don't have permission even though i'm using an admin user account not a standard user account. The files on the original desktop were copied their from a cd without any problems being encountered.

Usb Flash Drive Error - Volume Does Not Contain Recognized File System

I plugged in my usb flash drive into a computer using windows 7. It always prompts me to scan and fix or cancel. I canceled every time, but i got annoyed with it popping up every time, so i told it to scan and fix. A loading screen came up so i patiently waited. After completion it asks to format my usb flash drive. I can't format it though because i have homework files and all my other personal files on there. So i canceled the format, but every time i plug it into my computer it asks t format it. I even plugged it into a computer running on windows xp and it wanted to format it.

When i try to run it without formatting it it says, "e: is not accessible. The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. " My question is, what did windows 7 do to my flash drive and how do i recover my data?

Briefcase Change Sync Copy In Drive

I have been using briefcase for years. I have the original files on the†flash drive i wear on a cord around my neck. This particular style of jewelry brands me a geek and proud of it. I have on my desktop computer a set of briefcases. Every morning when i get to my office i sync the files on which i have been working. One touch, it's great. I have on my laptop at home a set of briefcases. Every evening when i get home i plug into my laptop i synch the files on which i have been working. One touch, it's great.

The only part that isn't great is the russian roulette i play with drive numbers. When i set up my new office computers i had several things plugged into the usb ports and the briefcase assined the synch to drive g: instead of drive e: so now i get to my office and plug in my flash drive. I change the drive to e: and synch the briefcases project 1, 3, & 4. Then i change the drive to f: and sync briefcases project 2 & 6. Then i change the drive to g: and sync briefcase project 5.

Yes, i can delete all the briefcases and start over - which is what i will do if i can't find a direct solution. But i would really prefer to finally get some control over the "sync copy in" column.

Also, why the "briefcase is in use on another computer" message. It's not in use on another computer; i am trying to use it myself. It is extremely annoying. If it was in the process of synching i could understand, but it's just sitting there, synced, waiting for me. The flash drive has been disconnected. I should not have to shut down windows explorer to use the files just because it's a briefcase instead of a file folder. Is there any way to stop this message from popping up every time i try to access a file - besides shutting down windows explorer.

Files Copy Over Usb Drive Can Only See Empty Folders

Using transcend f25 external usb drive: files copy over but i can only see empty folders (drive size indicates that the files are still there, though).

I'm using windows 7 professional and everything seems to be working fine. I attached my new transcend f25 usb drive (300g) to use for backups. I copied over about 20 gigs of archives and had windows run it's first backup. Everything seemed fine, and the available space on the drive is now about 230g, which sounds right. The problem is, i can only see empty folders on the drive!

Now, i know for sure that the files are there because i tried plugging the drive into an old xp laptop - bingo there were all my files! Can anyone advise me? This seems like a configuration problem, or maybe a drive error. The files were there when i first added them, though, so it's very odd! How can i see my files?

Backup Onto A Second External Drive

I want a second backup on a second external drive (call it "drive2"), so i'd like to either #1) copy every now and again drive1's daily backup file to drive2, or, #2) perform an occasional separate backup directly onto drive2. I'm confused about issues with both approaches. Original title: i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches. With approach i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches.

#1, windows doesn't permit me to just drag the backup file icon from drive1 to drive2; instead, i have to open the file and then copy itsunderlyingbackup set files, at the end of which iím always asked about merging a folder (see graphic at† http://www.Box.net/shared/ykq0nikfqo): do i answer yes or no? (This merge question comes up even when copying just a single backup set file. ) And, can i drag over to drive2 just the most recent backup set file, or does the backup program update older backup set files when it runs, meaning that i would have to copyeverybackup set file anytime i copy between drive1 and drive2?†

With approach #2, i can change settings within the backup program and choose drive2 as the destination, but does that affect theexistingbackup set (which i want to continue using) by creating an incremental backup file in the new destination, or does the backup program interpret a new destination as "create a totally new backup file from scratch on that new destination"? (With xp's ntbackup, you could create different "jobs" and different . Bkf files; does windows 7 backup offer a similar choice?)
