Upgrade Product Key Vs Clean Install Issue

Recently i purchased a copy of windows 7 professional and installed it onto a linux/unix system. After the instillation was completed, the product key i received would not work claiming it was an upgrade key. Although having it install on this non-windows computer so well, i can't believe upgrade/clean install are so vastly different that they require different product keys. There are also no options for telephone activation for some reason. Does this mean i'm officially forced to buy a whole new copy of windows 7 just for a product key?

Upgrade Product Key With Clean Install

I removed my previous post because i thought i had solved the problem, but i was incorrect. To make a long story short, i have a laptop that came pre-installed with windows 7 starter edition. It was not accompanied with a cd or dvd to reinstall windows. I had to reformat the hard drive for unrelated issues, and was stuck without a computer. I had purchased a windows home premium upgrade through the current college student promotion and tried to use that product key, but discovered it would not work for obvious reasons. I'd like to speak to someone about providing both of my keys (the windows 7 starter key on the sticker on the bottom of my laptop and the windows 7 hp upgrade key) to facilitate activation of my install.

Invalid Product Key When Upgrading Or Clean Install

I have done many windows version upgrades and clean installs. I have purchased an upgrade version of win 7 specifically for use on a macbook pro using vmware fusion. I have tried both upgrading a copy of win xp and a clean install. Both attempts give me the message of "invalid product key" when i get to that point of the install. It does not allow me to finish the install. I have retyped the product key multiple times for each. This purchase was from office depot and looked previously unopened. I have not seen a satisfactory method for correcting this on the microsoft site or in the forums i have been to so far.

Key Was For Upgrade And Not For Clean Install

When i purchased windows 7 online from the ultimate steal, it wasn't clear that it was an upgrade until it was too late and i'd already paid for it. Since it was intended for my brand new tower i have no previous operating system to upgrade from. I managed to do a fresh install regardless from a bootable disk. When i went online to enter the product key, it told me it was for the upgrade and not a clean install. I have 27 days to enter a product key. The reason i got it online was because of the offer for students. Being a student i can't afford to pay for a whole new operating system again and was wondering what i could do to avoid this?

Upgrade Vs Clean Install Key Fix

I have a feeling this is just a rant that will fall on deaf ears, but i would hope that someone at microsoft sees this and realizes that windows 7 has not made things simpler. Just about every version of windows since 95 has allowed upgrades. Those discs would require the presence of a previous version before installing, or if installing a fresh version, would simply ask for a key or previous install disk.

I just spent the better part of a day wasting my time to install a fresh copy of 7 that i now can't legitimately activate because my copy is 'upgrade' despite the fact that i own windows vista. This is ridiculous. Is there anything i can do to get my install to ask for my underlying key? Maybe it's time to cut the cord and go to linux, or perhaps just switch to mac. At least they have a straight forward licensing policy that won't leave me hanging.

Install Upgrade - Product Key Has Been Blocked

I've reinstalled windows 7 ultimate many times due to the failure of my computer, but i'm getting this message whenever i enter the product key:"the product key you typed has been blocked from use by microsoft"i'm then given 4 different options to choose. I tried doing the activation over the phone but that just turned into a wasted call because it rejected the number i entered after following the on-screen instructions. So what can i do to activate my genuine copy of windows 7 ultimate?

Install Upgrade Product Key Blocked

I have been using windows7 since the start of this year. Yesterday my computer crashed, likely from having two many applications open. This happens every so often. Even the background photo went away for the first time ever. Today when i restored to a previous windows from the day before i had a message that i may not have a legal copy of windows 7, so i went through the process of validation. I entered the same product key i entered months ago and windows still blocked it. Where do i go from here?

Install Upgrade - Product Key Not Valid

I am a graduate student at at univ. Of maryland, college park. Until around a month ago, i was using windows vista, but it kept giving me problems and viruses. So, i decided to switch to windows 7. The windows 7 cd is available at subsidized rates for staff members at the university. Since i am a teaching assistant, i could avail of this discount. Although i had asked for the upgrade cd, when i was installing windows 7, the cd asked me whether i wanted to upgrade an existing os or install a fresh copy.

I was not aware that the upgrade cd cannot be used for fresh install. I thought that if the upgrade cd cannot be used for a fresh install, then the cd would not give me the option of a fresh install. But since it did give the option, i decided to erase the windows vista files and install windows 7 afresh, since windows vista was giving problems. So, i installed windows 7 ultimate afresh, and i was asked to activate it. Its been about a month, and when i try to activate it, it says that the product key is not valid (that is, it can only be used for upgrade) and hence i am not using a legal windows copy.

But i was not told that the cd can not be used for fresh install while installing, and was given an option to either upgrade or install afresh, which resulted in me deleting my original windows vista files. I immediately contacted the university it helpdesk, but they do not have the fresh windows 7/vista cds for graduate students, they only have update cds, and advised me to contact microsoft. What should i do now? Can i get a new product key?

Install Upgrade - Activating Win 7 Product Key

In january i got a free windows 7 starter disk in the mail. Last month i upgraded to windows 7 ultimate for like 100 bucks at the store. Last week i had did a whole reformat thing to my computer cause it was acting up really bad and when i restarted the computer as windows 7 ultimate it asked for me to put in my product key again that i got from the store. I tried that and it wouldn't work. And the computer says i still have 22 days left to activate windows 7. Any ideas? I tried the free starter product key as well . No luck. And i no longer have the free windows starter disk either or product key for windows ultimate cause i accidentally shipped them in the mail with household goods back to the states, where im being stationed next.

Changing Activation Key - Clean Install On Dell

I want to install a 40 gb intel ssd, but windows came preinstalled on my computer from dell. I recently contacted dell and they told me that no recovery media was available for windows 7 (dubious, i know), and that they could not help me. I have a copy of win 7 professional through the msdn academic alliance, i upgraded it to ultimate and therefore would prefer not to lose it. Therefore, i was wondering 2 things:1. If i install from the win 7 professional addition cd, but changed my activation key to the win 7 ultimate key, would i run into any problems?2. And if i did this, would upgrade the additional features included in ultimate edition (i suspect yes, but i'd like a confirmation)?

Upgrade As Clean Install Using Upgrade Media Using One Hard Drive

I need help with planning my upgrade to windows 7 from windows xp pro. Can i do this upgrade as a clean install using upgrade media if i've only got one hard drive? I'm currently running 32-bit windows xp professional and want to upgrade to 64-bit windows 7 professional.

My laptop only has one hard drive on it, so installing "fresh" to a separate hd isn't possible. Since i already back up all my data to an external hd, i'd like to just format the internal hd and install windows 7 onto that. Will that be possible though using upgrade media? How does it verify my existing xp pro license?

Upgrade Or Clean Install

I have a dell studio one 1909 that is being serviced soon because the motherboard went out.
I ordered and received the window 7 upgrade packet from dell several months ago but was too chicken to complete the upgrade from the horror stories i have read. Would now be a good time to do this upgrade?  Would a "clean install" be better? Can i still do the upgrade or install of windows 7 even after the january 2010 free upgrade program deadline? Will i have any problems registering or activating window 7 now?

Can An Upgrade Be A Clean Install?

A friend of mine is getting a free upgrade to windows 7 home premium, as he bought a laptop right before windows 7 was released. Yes, it really is taking this long for people to get their upgrade discs through arvato. His question to me, and which i'm posing here because i have no personal experience, is whether the windows 7 upgrade disc can be installed as a clean install. I have advised him to do a clean install if at all possible, because of the many problems we've heard from people who have done in-place upgrades from vista. It's just that neither of us is sure of the mechanics of how to do that (or whether it's possible).

Clean Install With Upgrade Media

Well my computer had rescue discs but since they were proven to be functionally useless i was stuck with a very buggy system after a recently (read: yesterday) reformat/reinstall. Well, things have been screwed up to the point where i need to start fresh. I purchased win7 pro x86 and have that installed currently. My comp shipped with vista and that is what is contained (somewhere i'm sure) within my useless rescue discs. My question is if i could perform a clean install over my existing win7 install w/o any problems using my upgrade disc. Please help; i am tired and fed up and could really use a hand.

How To Clean Install With Upgrade Media?

I had a virus and my windows vista (64 bit) system crashed and would not re-boot. First, i tried to restore the system to the dell factory setting (like new) but it still will not start. Then, on a different machine, i downloaded "darik's boot and nuke" to cd. I plan to nuke my system and then upgrade to windows 7. How do i validate that i have a license for this computer, allowing me to use the upgrade w7 disc? Ps  it is a dell machine that came with vista 64 bit pre-installed.

Cannot Clean Install With Upgrade Media

I recently reformatted my hard drive because of multiple errors and the like piling up on my system. After installing windows again and installing my applications, i remembered i skipped registration during the setup process, so i went to activate my key, and i got this error:
The following failure occured while trying to use the product key:

Code:
0xc004f061

Description: the software licensing service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations. This is very bad for me, because i got my copy of windows with the student discount via download, and unless there is a workaround or microsoft would kindly reinstate my product key, then i will have no pc. My pc will expire in 27 days, please help microsoft.

Product Key Is For Upgrade Only

Problem entering ultimate upgrade keyi purchased windows 7 ultimate upgrade on dvd and ran anytime upgrade to install it. The key was entered at this time. All seemed ok, ultimate worked fine. Now i need to activate ultimate but when i enter my ultimate key i receive a message saying that i can only use this key to upgrade not a clean install. I have not performed a clean install, nor do i want to. The original key for 7 starter is not accepted either. The window 7 ultimate upgrade disc appears to be genuine from a reputable dealer. I now have a message on my screen saying this windows is not genuine. How do i fix this ?

Student Upgrade Version Cannot Be Used For A Clean Install

I bought windows 7 student upgrade back in i believe it was december, i kept the bootable jumpdrive i made from it and the registration key. The hard drive i installed it on failed recently, so i went out and bought 2 new ones, set it up in raid, and reinstalled windows 7 as well as transferred over some of the files i keep backed up and installed all the programs i lost. Bout a week later i realized i never activated it, and upon doing so received the error that the student upgrade version cannot be used for a clean install.

Now i am fairly sure i can find the original windows discs and registration numbers, however do i need to uninstall windows 7, install the old windows, just to reinstall windows 7 and all of the programs again? (Took me an entire weekend so i think you could see why i don't wish to do this) or is there a way of showing that i have a previous version without needing to go through the hoops of uninstalling everything.

Upgrade Disc Clean Install Problem

I have a computer that came with vista home and upgraded to windows 7. We ran into problems and was advised to do a clean installation. I did the clean install on a new hdd and cannot use the upgrade activation key code. Now what? I've already transfered all the data and cannot easily wipe the drive and reinstall vista to to do the upgrade. I have all the activation numbers from both vista and windows 7, can't i just talk to someone to get the correct activation numbers for this situation?

Upgrade Or Clean Install Using Oem Disk

I am building pretty much a new system, just for myself. I will have new motherboard, new hard drives, new case, new psu, new video system (going sli). I currently have xp sp3 and i want to go to win 7. I bought an oem copy of win 7, but have not broken the seal, and won't unless i know i can use it. My question is: once all the hardware is together, my assumption is that in my oem package i will find a win 7 dvd from which i can straightforwardly install windows. Can i do this, or should i get a retail version?

Upgrade Version Product Key

I have a laptop and a netbook, one legitimate vista key, one full retail win 7 key and one upgrade retail win 7 key. My question is this: currently the full retail version is installed on my laptop and is activated. I have also installed the full retail version on the netbook - this is awaiting activation after changing the laptop (to which the vista key belongs) to the upgrade version.

My question is - can i just change the installed product key on the laptop from the full version to the upgrade version without having to re-install vista first and then doing the upgrade? If you find my response helpful, please click on the "vote as helpful" button!

Upgrade Product Key And Language

I'm trying to finish upgrading my network to windows 7 (i've upgrades 2 at the official release), so i bought a family pack upgrade. But the family pack was only available in french (no english copies left).

Can i use the product keys from the french family pack to activate english installs? I already have english upgrade media from the previous upgrades, so it's just a question if the keys will activate?

If i can't activate an english install what options do i have? Is the french family pack of no use to me?

Activating With Upgrade Product Key

I bought and downloaded a clean install of windows 7 professional 64-bit. Installed and activated onto my desktop no problem. However i did not realize that windows 7 could only be installed on one computer. As such, i installed it onto my laptop, and after 30 days was deactivated. I want to activate it and am wondering if a product key from an upgrade would work? I want to find out for sure before i spend the money on a product key that will be incompatible.

Install Product Key Not Valid Problem

My wife recently purchased and installed windows 7 on her pc, and i installed it shortly after. The product key didn't work so i found a universal one on the internet that seemed to work fine. Now i am being alerted or warned that the product key is not valid and i need a new one, or something to that affect. Cant the owner use the product key on more than one computer? Do i need to uninstall it and revert back to vista, or buy another one and use that key? I want to keep windows 7 but i don't want to have to reinstall it again, it took too long. Any recommendations or solutions?

Win 7 Upgrade Product Key Was Invalid

I upgraded my computer from windows 7 home to windows 7 pro, and the product key was invalid. I have installed the pro copy into another computer, which now has windows xp pro on it, not windows 7. I want to transfer it to this computer, so i used windows anytime upgrade, typed in my product key, and it said it was valid. 3 days later, it popped up saying that activation had failed, and the product key was invalid. I retyped it, hoping that was the problem, and no, it wasn't. I used the phone activation option and when i said "2" by mistake, they hung up-well, not really, because it was automated.

I want a real person on the other end, and i want to ask if they could remove it from the old computer. Until then, does anyone know how to undo an upgrade? I tried to upgrade to windows 7 home by typing the product key on the bottom of the bottom of the new computer, but because it was home, it said that i couldn't downgrade. Again, anyone know how to undo an upgrade?

Trying To Reinstalled Win 7 But Product Key Is For Upgrade Only

Here's what happened:i had windows vista that came with my computer. I purchased the online upgrade to windows 7 ultimate. I wanted to install linux on my computer, but it needs its own hdd partition, and i was unable to shrink the windows partition to allow me to create another partition for linux.
To get around this, i wiped my system, set up two equal partitions, installed linux on one, and borrowed my buddy's windows 7 install disk to install it on the other. After i installed, i tried to active, and got an error message saying my product key is for upgrade-only, not fresh installs.
I legitimately purchased windows 7, but because i didn't know my product key was for upgrade-only, i am unable to activate it. How can this be fixed?
