Usb Hard Drives Are Not Recognized

My computer crashed 4 days ago and i needed to replace the mother board. During the process i was talked into upgrading from vista to windows 7. I spent the last 2 days uploading all my programs and up grading those that didn't work in windows 7.

I have a wd passport 160 gb usb hd that did not work when i plug it into the usb port. I called western digital support, thinking i needed a new driver. They told me i would need to buy a new portable drive as they were not supporting my passport. Everything works in my computer’s usb ports, flash drives, and phone. The only thing that does not work is my brand new portable drive i just bought (hp 320 gb) and my old passport. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is wrong?  Both drive work in 2 other computers both running xp. The wd drive worked well in the old vista computer.

I have called western digital and hp support. They tell me that the drives are built into windows 7. I have been surfing all night; i can’t find anyone who has a fix for the problem. I ran a system scan looking for hardware drivers from the microsoft web site. I have installed window 7 upgrade advisor and ran the scan twice. I've check for compatibility on the microsoft site which says the dive is supported i only need to plug it in and it should work. The computer won’t even recognize or acknowledge the drive is plug in. I have tried different plugs it still does not work.

Usb Flash Hard Drives Not Recognized

Since purchasing my computer, i've been able to use the various usb drives for other hardware such as wireless internet, hauppage tv reception, and wireless mouse/keyboard. However, any attempt at reading an external flash drive (then larger external hard drive) on all of the ports the drive is not successful. The drive appears in the device manager and is appropriately named, it is also listed in the disk management window as disc 5 (underneath the various sd drive ports and whatnot-one of which appears to be assigned the name of usb external hard drive when in fact it is not).

Upon attempt to reassign a drive path/letter the message appears that "disk management console view not up to date", but restarting does no good. Dell support is not supportive and claim it is a software problem because the ports work for other devices.

Usb Drives Have Power, But Not Recognized

Here's my problem: i've got an asus ul50vt laptop with windows 7 64-bit.

My usb drivers which until recently worked just fine have stopped recognizing anything. I know there is power because my flash drive lights up, but i can't access either of them and my ipod is not recognized either. I have tried to uninstall the devices so my laptop would re-recognise them, but that hasn't worked because the uninstallation process through the device manager seems to take so long it literally does nothing.

I'm at a standstill and i need these three drives working. What else can i try?

Ide Hard Drive (usb 2.0) Not Recognized At Computer Startup

Ide hard drive in external enclosure (usb 2. 0) not recognized by windows 7 at computer startup, but recognized if it is rebooted after windows 7 is done loading. I have a western digital 500gb pata (ide) hard drive in an enclosure. I leave the enclosure on at all times since it has a cooling fan.

However, if for whatever reason i need to reboot my system, windows 7 never recognizes this drive unless i turn off and on my enclosure. Once i reboot my enclosure, windows 7 recognizes the drive and tries to autoplay. I would like w7 to recognize my drive at startup so that i don't have to reboot my enclosure every time i reboot my computer. What can i do to fix this?

Usb Flash Drive - Usb Device Is Not Recognized

I have tried 4 different usb flash drives from different manufacturers and my usb hard drive from western digital. Windows 7 recognizes it until i start transferring files. Then it can't find the drive. When i unplug it and plug it back in, i get a notification that the usb device is not recognized. After i restart the computer, it does the same thing all over again. I ran vista before windows 7 and never had this problem. I am very frustrated. I must have access to my flash & external drives or windows 7 is useless to me.

One Hard Drive Not Recognized

I have 3 drives in the following configuration before installing win 7 rc:

  1. 120gb drive with xp 64 sp2 (used as a c drive)
  2. 120gb drive with vista 64 (used as d drive)
  3. 320gb drive used between them for data (used as e drive). Both oss could see the 320gb drive.

Did a clean win 7 rc install on the vista drive (replacing vista and all). Now, i can not see the "e" data drive when booted in win 7, but when i do a defrag, the defrag program (from accessories) sees the drive though not as a drive letter. Xp64 can still utilize the data drive as well. Please let me know what specific info i need to share with you if necc.

Usb Device Not Recognized

I just purchased a toshiba notebook satellite l500. It has stickers shown windows 7 on the notebook but i can't find the windows cd in the packaging. I have alot of problems with this notebook till i can't do my homework and run basic tasks.

Problem 1) the system always prompt 'setting up for 1st time use' in every time i switch on the notebook. Then all the setting in internet explorer are reset and not reflecting what i changed to.

Problem 2) when i plug in my imation apollo 2. 5" portable hdd (25 phdd-500gb), the windows shown 'usb device not recognized'. I tried using ms fix tool but still doesn't work.

Problem 3) i added a password into my account which is also administrator account. The same password works when pc starting up but it doesn't work when i tried to switch pc back from sleeping mode with the same password. It shown me 'account being disabled'. I see no option in the control panel for me to activate this account again.

Problem 4) whenever i switch on my notebook, the screen shown 'system preparation tool 3. 14'. What is this for and is it recommended to have this? If not, pls advice how to switch this off at windows 7. I found some procedure to switch off at windows vista but not 7. Apologize for i can't differential between toshiba's problem or window's problem. All i know, i have some frustration to get things done with this new notebook and windows 7.

Usb Driver Not Recognized

I keep getting error message "usb driver not recognized" every three seconds? And it does not identify which one has malfunctioned! Normally, the only one attached is my mouse. Printer (canon mx100 series) won't work! Everything is hooked up, driver downloaded (from canon) and it still just won't work. I had a canon sent to me with this laptop. (Which worked, finally) i am not a novice either, been working with and on others computers for over 25 years!

Running windows vista home premium program and trying to use outlook express. Being told windows live has taken over as the new outlook, however, keep being told to sign up for hotmail. When you do? You keep being told to sign up for hotmail? Then it'll tell you that you have no inbox (and you never get to your email even though its telling you you have many emails sent to you already).

This is so awesome (or is it awful?) Think its time for a mac rather than a pc.

Can I Swap Hard Drives?

I have two dell machines both bought with windows 7 ultimate. I have had one of these machines for six months and the other i bought this week. The new dell pc is much faster than the older pc however the older machine has so many apps installed and it is running exactly how i want it to. My problem is i have virtualization software and images on the older machine and i don't want to go through the process of reinstalling on the new pc, therefore can i just swap the hard drives. I'm aware the os license number is tied to the mac address. But i would like to know, would it be a case of just going through the authentication process again via the internet.

Problem With Hard Drives

I have a wd 750g black hard drive set up as the primary sata drive. I have another 80gb hard drive accidentally set as the 4th sata drive rather than secondary. I installed windows 7 on the primary hard drive, at least i thought so. Seems that it only sees the 80g drive. It has installed windows 7 on the smaller drive. And in the windows explorer that is the only drive that i see. Bios has it right and in the hardware manager, it shows both hard drives. I am very confused, can anyone help me?

Usb Drive Not Recognized After Reboot

I have a windows 7 64-bit system. I connected my maxtor 500gb usb drive while the pc was on and it recognized the drive using the default windows driver. Seagate, which owns maxtor, does not have a 64 bit driver for this drive. Seagate and microsoft say the drive should work with the windows driver. It was working beautifully.

Then i re-booted my system. Upon windows re-start, the drive came up as "usb device not recognized". In device manager it is a yellow icon next to "unknown device". I removed the usb cable and re-plugged it to no avail. I then removed the drive's power cord and plugged it back in. The drive was instantly recognized again.

What is happening on a re-boot to mess up the usb connection? How can this be resolved? I don't want to have to pull the power cord on every re-boot.

Usb Device Not Recognized In Win 7

So it seems ms has a problem with " usb device not recognized in windows 7 ". A google search will find no real solutions to the problem. I haven't found one hear ether. How can i have a handful of flash drives and external hard drives that will not work on only 2 win7 systems that i know of , yet work on others ? I never needed to download drivers from anyone to make them work on any other os . I just plug them in and the work . The 1st time. Not after trying all things that don't. This is something that needs a real fix. I should not have to pay tech support to find out why. This is clearly an os win7 problem.

External Hard Drives Disappear

My external hard drives "disappear" and are not recognized by windows 7 after it's been running for 5 to 30 minutes. I installed windows 7 on november 1 to the computer which had been running vista since its purchase in july. I have two external hard drives a 250 gb seagate freeagent (it has its own power source hooked up via usb) and 1 tb hp personal media drive (slides into the personal media drive bay of my hp computer). I have had the seagate drive for two years, and it worked well with my old computer, never a problem. I have had the hp drive for two months, and it has experienced only light use.

Last week, after windows 7 had been installed for a week with no issues, when i went to save a .doc file on my seagate drive, it said that the drive could not be located. I ended up saving the file to internal disc and restarting the computer. After the restart, my computer recognized my seagate drive, and i was able to save the file. A day later, i attempted to save an image i had been editing, and the same thing happened. The problem began to occur more frequently.

Then, last night, i opened itunes and tried to create aac versions of songs from 2 new audio cds. Halfway through then ten songs on the first cd, an error message popped up indicating that the seagate drive was no longer there. After another failed attempt to import the songs, i popped in the other cd, but itunes could not copy the files to my desired directory. I changed the directory where i save files to the c: (internal) drive, and songs were successfully copied.

I restarted my computer and tried to import songs on the seagate drive once more. It finished the songs on the first disc successfully, without incident. Then i put the second disc into the cd drive. After importing one song, an error message again popped up. I clicked the computer icon on the desktop, and it indicated that the seagate drive was still there. I double-clicked the seagate drive, and instead of displaying files and folders, all it said was "this folder is empty. " I then disconnected the seagate drive from my computer. The computer folder still displayed the seagate drive as connected to the computer.

Fearing seagate drive failure, i pulled out my old computer and hooked up the seagate drive, just to check. All files & folders on the seagate drive were present. I decided to hook up my hp personal media drive to my old computer and proceeded to copy all files on the seagate drive to the hp drive. This took about two and a half hours. I then hooked my hp drive back up to my new computer and tried saving word files, image files, and importing audio files from cd into itunes. Again, just like the seagate drive, things worked well to start, but after 5 or 10 minutes, the drive had disappeared. Every time i restart my new computer, the drive is there for anywhere from two minutes to half an hour, and every time the drive disappears.

I have tried going in to disk management and rescanning disks. I have tried going in to device manager and uninstalling both seagate and hp disks, then restarting the computer, and then hooking them up once more. I have no idea why the drive would be recognized for a short amount of time and then disappear. I have checked for loose cables. It's just bizarre because i didn't really notice any issues with either drive for the first several days after i had installed windows 7.

Losing Additional Hard Drives

I've installed windows 7 rc on my computer (easy installation btw!). I have 3 hard drives.

The issue i'm having is that when windows 7 boots up, it detects all 3 of my hard drives fine. However, after an indeterminate period of time, two of the hard drives (the ones where windows 7 is not installed to) disappear and windows 7 says they don't exist. It can't find files on them, nor do they don't show up in my computer -> manage -> storage devices.

To get them back, i restart my computer. When i restart however, windows 7 won't boot up. I have to physically power off the machine in order to get windows 7 to boot up (and again all my hard drives are visible initially).

I've tried installing the latest chipset driver for my motherboard, but this has not resolved the problem. I've tried searching for information on this problem but haven't been able to find anything. Is this a known issue? Does anyone know if there's a fix for this?

I have two hard drives and would like to be able to dual boot with vista or 7. Would it be possible to remove the hard drive with vista and do a clean install on the second to see how it works and then remove the second drive and do an dual boot upgrade on the drive with vista. Everything i read says a clean install is better but i would like to have vista available if i have problems with 7.

Win 7 Only Detects 3 Of 4 Hard Drives

My windows 7 has detected 3 of my 4 hard drives hooked up. I have drives c e and f, but it wont detect g. The hdd it wont detect does still have windows xp installed on it, but i'm still baffled as to why i can't browse it as just another hard drive. Windows xp does detect all the drives and browses the drive with win7 installed on it just fine, but win7 can't browse the drive with xp on it. My device manager in win7 shows that it's there and working properly in my disk drives, yet it won't display the drive in my computer. Is there a way to force windows 7 to re-detect that hard drive so it will show up in my computer?

Lg Touch Phone Usb Device Not Recognized

I plugged my new lg touch phone into my laptop to load music. Drivers were automatically loaded, except one failed. The one that failed to load wasn't a problem because the other two drivers were the ones needed to identify the phone in windows and load the music. The problem is the alert ("usb device not recognized) keeps popping up and i can't get it to turn off.

I replugged in the phone and that cleared it while the phone was plugged in and for 5 minutes after but then the alerts started up again. They flash every few minutes. I've closed the connection, it doesn't show on the task tray but in the alert menu under windows it continues to list "usb device note recognized. " How can i clear this alert?

I've rebooted and completely shut down the laptop to no avail.

External Hdd Not Recognized By Usb Port

I have an external hard drive that is not being recognized by all of my usb ports on my laptop. When i connect to my third port, the computer recognizes the device and i am able to access the files on it. But, when i try to hook it up to the other two ports (located on the back of my laptop) the hd is not recognized. It receives power, however, because the power light comes on. Whats even weirder is that other devices, like my mouse and my ipod, are recognized by the back ports.

When i plug the external hd into these back ports, nothing happens, no "unrecognized device" messages or anything. I have tried a number of fixes, like reinstalling the usb drivers and updating the external hd's driver (its a toshiba). I don't know why the external hd is being recognized by one particular usb port and not the others! Any ideas?

Dell Webcam - Usb Device Is Not Recognized

My new laptop had been running great for the first week or so, but today problems started occurring. Right now i'm having problems with the built in webcam, the screen is black and i'm not sure if the mic is picking up sound or not. I keep getting a warning that the "usb device is not recognized" even though i don't have a usb plugged in, so i'm under the assumption that this problem relates to my webcam issues.

It comes up almost every five seconds and is really bothering me. I have also seen a message come up that i have a problem with my dell dock. I don't know what this means or what the problem is, but i know that it probably is important and possibly relates to my other issues. I'm new to the whole windows 7 operating system because i've been using xp for years so if you can walk me through what to do that would be great.
