Power On Password

I pushed the power on, just as i normally do. But found out displaying this: "power-on password". The last time i use it was like the usual thing i do. I do now know the password and how i ended up with this. I tried some of these: i tried to remove the battery for a meantime and hoping it will turn on normally but still shows the same result. Everytime i click enter, it shows the same until 3rd time. Everytime i click f11 or any function keys, it still shows the same. I just purchased windows 7 9 months ago but haven't experienced any negative things until now.

Power On Wrong Username Or Password

Everytime i turn on my laptop, i'm told 'wrong username or password' even though i didn't enter anything in. Next i get a screen with a user that i thought i deleted with a 'enter password' beneath it and a 'switch user' beneath that. When i press switch user it goes to a screen with the same deleted user and a 'other user', i have to put in my administration account details into the 'other user' button, then i'm finally let in. Why is this all happening?

Laptop Will Not Power Up

Have been given a toshiba protege r400 mod no:ppr40a-01000l to look at for a friend who is very ill and the machine just will not switch on. Have tested the adaptor and battery voltage and there is plenty. Now i don't have much experience with laptops as such and so cannot rule the psu as the culprit. When plugged in the blue power light is on and the small yellow battery indicator flickers at random speeds - but quite fast. Now i have the maintenance manual for it and i can probably get the lcd mask off to look at the power witch itself. But before i do i would like some opinions on the most likely cause and would prefer to avoid this if at all possible.

Why Doesnt The Usb Power Off ?

Why doesn't the usb power off in windows 7 & vista. My led is still on after i click on the remove usb icon. Vista and win 7 rc1 still say i can remove the usb but the usb is still powered. This, in my opinion, can still affect the usb. Is it possible to have the usb power down like in xp. It is not a big issue but important from the stand point of possibly losing data on the usb or other device.

Usb Power Surge

I got an error message stating usb power surge/failure. Since then, all 3 usbs on my laptop are no longer working. If i plug an optic mouse into it the optic light doesn't even come on making me think its a power issue. In device manager though, all usbs are showing as operational (although when you select one and go to the power tab, it shows 0 under power available. I'm worried i have fried my motherboard but everything else is working fine. Any suggestions ?

Mimic Xp Power User

We are trying to get legacy software to work on vista and windows 7. Our software could be run by administrators or power users in xp. According to microsoft, "to use power users group on windows vista, a new security template must be applied to change the default permissions on system folders and the registry to grant power users group permissions equivalent to windows xp". However, it does not tell me how to configure one or give an example.

Can anyone tell me what i need to do to create a security template that will be the equivalent of a power user in xp?

Power Settings Reset

Although i have setup my laptop not to enter sleep mode when i close the lid and this has worked several times, after installing updates this setting does not work anymore. The settings themselves did not change, just the behavior. I tried to change them back to default and then change them back to how i want (i.e. Not to enter sleep mode when the lid is closed), but the laptop still goes into sleep mode when the lid is closed.

Any ideas where i can begin troubleshooting?

How To Enable Power Icon?

When i installed windows 7 last weekend, there was a power icon in the system tray that i unintentionally disabled. How do i get it back? There is no entry for power when i click customize on the systray so i can't enable it through the ui. I also looked in the registry to verify that the icon was not disabled there.

The ups shows up in the device manager and powercfg correctly identifies it (apc es550). The battery is obviously working because i can unplug the ups and the machine continues to work. It would be nice though, to be able to see the battery status.

I've read a number of messages from people complaining about the power icon but i'd be happy just to see it. What's the secret here?

Power Option Does Not Display

I recently brought a new laptop which runs windows 7 home premium. I use it either at work, university or at home (where i attach an external monitor) and so often need to change the power settings depending on whether i am running on battery or not etc. However recently when i either click the power icon in the status bar (bottom right) or through the control pannel nothing happens, not even an error message. This happens regardless of whether its power by mains or battery, has the external monitor attached or not, or is connected to the internet or not. The icon in the control pannel has also changed to a file image instead of the power options icon. How do i fix this?

How To Use Most Of Cpu Power In Xp Mode ?

I want to use the most of my cpu power in xp mode of window 7. I am using amd x620 with 4 cores and 6g of ram. My machines work wonderfully in window 7 - very fast. But, when i only use xp mode in window 7, it seems that only one core out of four cores of my amd x620 is working, the remaining three cores/cpus are still in "holiday". That is, can virtual window create virtual machines with 4 virtual processors or 4 virtual cores per virtual machine? If so, what should i do to get the three lasz cores work harder?

Power Saver / Graphics Bug

My asus computer has this power4gear battery performance tracker/ruinmylife software. I should mention that i always keep my laptop plugged in for the duration of my session, then unplug it after shutting down. When i turn on my computer, everything is fine. But when i start to do anything, anything, an extremely intrusive and dictatorial performance pop up invades my computer screen, telling me that it is switching power plans (nothing changes during this 'switch'), and will not go away or minimize for at least two minutes.

If i try to do anything while it is on the screen, the screen immediately goes black and stays that way until the pop up decides to call it quits. I know it has something to do with nvidia graphics, but if i click on the tray icon nothing happens. Occasionally, after childishly trying to click the pop up away roughly 50 times it starts to fade white, behaving like a non-responsive program (which it obviously is). Every so often the pop up appears multiple times in one session, even if i'm doing one thing for the duration of my time on the computer.

If i'm gaming, i am hard-pressed to minimize the program if the occasion calls for it because bringing it back up each time dims the screen more and more. Is there anything i can do or press to make this pop up go away? It's just really, really annoying!

Nic Power Management Changes After Reboot

We are running windows 7 enterprise, fully patched on dell optiplex 745, 755, 760, and 980 computers and i can duplicate this on all of them. I go into device manager -> network card -> power management. Check the boxes that we want. Close device manager. Reopen device manager to check that the change took. It did. Reboot. All power management settings for the nic are now unchecked. Normally we run a script to do this, but it doesn't matter whether you make the change via script or by hand, the power management settings always revert back to all three boxes unchecked after a reboot.

As long as the computer isn't rebooted or shut down, the setting sticks for at least several days, the longest time we've tested. I found one thread that said this was a known issue, but the link to the answers.microsoft.com page came up 404. Any ideas? Here's the script, but like i said, it doesn't matter whether by script or by hand. On error resume next

Const wbem flag return immediately = &h10
Const wbem flag forward only = &h20

Battery / Power Supply Service

My laptop has crashed and battery checker still indicate 0%, but it's full charged. Pc normally work at battery over hour. Now, when i insert battery, dpcs and interrupt hw use 100% of cpu! Everything is slowly and keyboard doesn't work. But, when i take off battery and work only with ac supply, everything is good!

In safe mode it's working perfect with battery. I found, that in safe mode don't working some services. It seems like desktop (always on ac) and work both (battery, ac). I want to know, which service checking it and stop it. I don't need battery checking and tray icon. I only need work as safe mode.

Installs Notebook Power Settings On Pc

I installed windows 7 professional on a pc successfully, but the power option settings are for a notebook computer, offering 'on battery' and 'plugged in' options although it does not have a battery. (It is connected to a ups. ).

(1) can i alter the power options so that windows 7 knows that it is a pc and not a notebook computer?
(2) will there be any other issues that might affect this pc, if windows 7 thinks it has installed on a notebook computer?

Power Service Conflict With Screensaver

My screensaver and other standby mode options have had problems starting. (For example, if i set my computer to a screensaver after 1 min, a closed screen after 3 min, and sleep after 5 min, none of them work)i went through and did a clean boot, to find that the screensaver and other options still did not start. It was only after i selected "diagnostic startup, " did the screensaver finally appear. After enabling services one by one, i discovered that it was the "power" microsoft service interfering with the screensaver starting up. Is there a way to fix the power service so that i may enable it without having it interfere with my screensaver?

Power Failure During Boot Time

I have a hp system that was upgraded to windows 7 home premium x64 from vista using the hp upgrade dvd. Everything worked fine until yesterday. The system restarted after a needed system update and by mistake i hit the power button during boot time. I press the button again to start and the system just does not want to boot. I have tried changing to onboard video on bios setup, system repair, system restore and safe mode but nothing seems to work. I also entered commands bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot

During safe mode it just hangs at ahcxi64s.sys and then it restarts again. The system repair log shows below:

Root cause found:

Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem

Repair action: system files integrity check and repair
Result: failed. Error code = 0x490
Time taken = 849535 ms

Usb Drives Have Power, But Not Recognized

Here's my problem: i've got an asus ul50vt laptop with windows 7 64-bit.

My usb drivers which until recently worked just fine have stopped recognizing anything. I know there is power because my flash drive lights up, but i can't access either of them and my ipod is not recognized either. I have tried to uninstall the devices so my laptop would re-recognise them, but that hasn't worked because the uninstallation process through the device manager seems to take so long it literally does nothing.

I'm at a standstill and i need these three drives working. What else can i try?

Display Power Settings Are Not Saved

Power settings won't stay as saved - display setting always reverts to 3 minutes after re-boot. Maybe i don't yet understand how the new windows 7 works, but i can't seem to set my power settings and have them stay there. I've set them to turn off the display after 15 minutes and put the computer to sleep at 30 minutes. But when i re-boot the machine, the display setting always reverts from 15 minutes to 3 minutes. Is there any way to save these settings and have them stay as saved?

Power Management Tab Missing

I just reinstalled windows 7 home on my tablet pc, the hp tm2t. Since i switched my hdd to an ssd. However, as i'm setting the tablet pc's multitouch function so that it would be responsive after idle (before my reinstall, i could uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"), i realized the power management tab in device manager isn't there anymore.

The item i'm looking for is under the human interface devices -> usb input device (it's not specified, but this device manages the multitouch for my tablet). I still see the power management tab for my wireless card, biometric devices (fingerprint reader) and some other usb root hubs. Does anyone else have the same problem? Or know a fix?

Missing Power Management Tabs

After upgrading to w7 from visa i can no longer wake laptop[h. P compaq presario v6000] from sleep using usb op mouse or op keyboard. No power management tabs are available for them in device manager. Under usb root hub power management unchecked 'allow computer to turn off this device' but 'allow this device to wake up computer' is greyed out. There is no option in bios to alter power settings[infact very little in way of any options] but it worked in vista so dont see this could be a problem. Also put w7 on my home build desktop with no similar problem. Any suggestions?
