Usb Drives, External Hd Not Shutting Down

When i finish using my usb thumb drive, or external hard drive and click the icon for "safely remove hardware and eject media" and click "remove", the message pops up saying the drive can be safely removed - but the drive light stays illuminated on the thumb drive or the external drive. If i pull the thumb drive out, the next time i use it i'm informed that there may be errors and i'm given the option to scan and fix the drive or continue without scanning. Because of this problem, i always shut the pc down before removing the external hard drive (its light stays on as well).

Is there some way to correct this?

External Usb Drives Disconnect

Regardless of the usb drive i connect to my desktop pc windows 7 continualy disconnects the drives. I have tested numerous drives, however when tested on my laptop which is using windows 7 ultimate 64 bit all of these exact same drives work perfectly. My desktop is using and intel core2 quad, q6600  2. 4ghz with 3gb of memory. I have read this complaint all over the internet and i have tried several fixes with no positive results. All drivers are up to date. I have uninstalled and reinstalled until i am blue in the face.

From what i have read during my research it appears this is a common problem that 64 bit users are complaining about alot, however this obviously is a problem with the 32 bit windows 7 version as well. Numerous tech sites on the internet are also stating that this is only a problem on desktop pc's and not on laptops, which i guess i confirmed during my tests. Has anyone else experienced this and has anyone found a fix?

Not Able To See All External Drives

I have window 7 home premium (64bit) and i've got 2 wd externals and 1 seagate external connected (all work fine) and i connect a third wd external and this drive shows in my device manager, but not in the "my computer window" and i can not access this drive. The same drive works fine when i remove any of the other drives and on another computer. How do i get this drive to show. All wd externals are 2tb and the seagate is 500gb. How do i get the third wd accessible?

Expansion Or External Drives

Please can someone help with an infuriating thing that is occurring. I bought a seagate 2tb expansion drive which is plugged into usb port on my motherboard, all recognized no problem but. Every now and again it will activate and the annoying windows trumpet keeps sounding! Can someone please tell me how to avoid this all the time, and the fact that it is not a drive problem, as despite being in contact with seagate and following instructions to format the drive, it still does the same thing! Now being relatively new to windows 7, could it be down to power settings or something like that. I just want the trumpeting to stop! Many thanks for the experts to oblige.

External Hard Drives Disappear

My external hard drives "disappear" and are not recognized by windows 7 after it's been running for 5 to 30 minutes. I installed windows 7 on november 1 to the computer which had been running vista since its purchase in july. I have two external hard drives a 250 gb seagate freeagent (it has its own power source hooked up via usb) and 1 tb hp personal media drive (slides into the personal media drive bay of my hp computer). I have had the seagate drive for two years, and it worked well with my old computer, never a problem. I have had the hp drive for two months, and it has experienced only light use.

Last week, after windows 7 had been installed for a week with no issues, when i went to save a .doc file on my seagate drive, it said that the drive could not be located. I ended up saving the file to internal disc and restarting the computer. After the restart, my computer recognized my seagate drive, and i was able to save the file. A day later, i attempted to save an image i had been editing, and the same thing happened. The problem began to occur more frequently.

Then, last night, i opened itunes and tried to create aac versions of songs from 2 new audio cds. Halfway through then ten songs on the first cd, an error message popped up indicating that the seagate drive was no longer there. After another failed attempt to import the songs, i popped in the other cd, but itunes could not copy the files to my desired directory. I changed the directory where i save files to the c: (internal) drive, and songs were successfully copied.

I restarted my computer and tried to import songs on the seagate drive once more. It finished the songs on the first disc successfully, without incident. Then i put the second disc into the cd drive. After importing one song, an error message again popped up. I clicked the computer icon on the desktop, and it indicated that the seagate drive was still there. I double-clicked the seagate drive, and instead of displaying files and folders, all it said was "this folder is empty. " I then disconnected the seagate drive from my computer. The computer folder still displayed the seagate drive as connected to the computer.

Fearing seagate drive failure, i pulled out my old computer and hooked up the seagate drive, just to check. All files & folders on the seagate drive were present. I decided to hook up my hp personal media drive to my old computer and proceeded to copy all files on the seagate drive to the hp drive. This took about two and a half hours. I then hooked my hp drive back up to my new computer and tried saving word files, image files, and importing audio files from cd into itunes. Again, just like the seagate drive, things worked well to start, but after 5 or 10 minutes, the drive had disappeared. Every time i restart my new computer, the drive is there for anywhere from two minutes to half an hour, and every time the drive disappears.

I have tried going in to disk management and rescanning disks. I have tried going in to device manager and uninstalling both seagate and hp disks, then restarting the computer, and then hooking them up once more. I have no idea why the drive would be recognized for a short amount of time and then disappear. I have checked for loose cables. It's just bizarre because i didn't really notice any issues with either drive for the first several days after i had installed windows 7.

Upon Reboot External Drives Are Formatted

After adding an external driver for data and backup, i partitioned the 300gb sata drive into two primary partitions and then formatted. I copied data onto each drive. I then changed the drive letters from e & f to m & n using "disk management". Then i used device manager, diskdrives, scan for drives to update. This was successful and my data was present.

After rebooting, a serious problem appeared - m: is not accessible and the volume does contain recognized file system and please make sure all the required drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted. I repeated the process with the same bad results. This is a sata drive attached to the controller via a backplate. Both of the partitions show:

(M:) and (n:) (no name)
146/151 gb raw
Healthy (primary partition)
Any ideas? /Howardj

Cd/dvd Player Or External Hard Drives Don't Stop Running

My camera displays images upside down after upgrading to windows 7 64bit and cd/dvd player or external hard drives don't stop running after quitting attempted access. I have an asus g50vt-x1 laptop that is a 64-bit machine. It had windows vista home premium 64bit installed on it and the camera worked properly with it.

I ran the windows 7 update advisory on it and it said i could upgrade to windows 7 64bit. After upgrading to windows 7 professional 64 bit the camera images are all upside down. I have contacted asus about the problem and they have sent me updated drivers, but the images are still upside down.could windows 7 be causing this problem as i know it worked fine in vista?

I have also noticed that my dvd/cd drive and external hard drives don't stop running after i exit an application. When this happens i can't eject the dvd/cd or safely remove the drive from the computer.

After Reboot Usb Drives Are Not Working

I just bought this computer yesterday and it worked fine, turned it on today and usb drives are not working. My mouse and keyboard were both getting power to them (could tell from laser light on mouse and num lock on keyboard) but were not responding at all at the desktop. Ive checked the forums already and have tried running my trouble shooting and uninstalling the drives and letting them reinstall after a restart, neither worked. Ive also checked for updated drives for it and their are none.

I have checked the properties on the usb drives and it says that its an error in the registry and that is a code 19. I have gone through the help toll and clicked where it say to click to remove the upper and lower registries to fix code 19, and restated and still not fixed.

Usb Hard Drives Are Not Recognized

My computer crashed 4 days ago and i needed to replace the mother board. During the process i was talked into upgrading from vista to windows 7. I spent the last 2 days uploading all my programs and up grading those that didn't work in windows 7.

I have a wd passport 160 gb usb hd that did not work when i plug it into the usb port. I called western digital support, thinking i needed a new driver. They told me i would need to buy a new portable drive as they were not supporting my passport. Everything works in my computer’s usb ports, flash drives, and phone. The only thing that does not work is my brand new portable drive i just bought (hp 320 gb) and my old passport. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what is wrong?  Both drive work in 2 other computers both running xp. The wd drive worked well in the old vista computer.

I have called western digital and hp support. They tell me that the drives are built into windows 7. I have been surfing all night; i can’t find anyone who has a fix for the problem. I ran a system scan looking for hardware drivers from the microsoft web site. I have installed window 7 upgrade advisor and ran the scan twice. I've check for compatibility on the microsoft site which says the dive is supported i only need to plug it in and it should work. The computer won’t even recognize or acknowledge the drive is plug in. I have tried different plugs it still does not work.

Usb Drives Have Power, But Not Recognized

Here's my problem: i've got an asus ul50vt laptop with windows 7 64-bit.

My usb drivers which until recently worked just fine have stopped recognizing anything. I know there is power because my flash drive lights up, but i can't access either of them and my ipod is not recognized either. I have tried to uninstall the devices so my laptop would re-recognise them, but that hasn't worked because the uninstallation process through the device manager seems to take so long it literally does nothing.

I'm at a standstill and i need these three drives working. What else can i try?

Cannot Copy Large File Between Usb Drives

Using windows 7. Have two 1tb ntfs drives and i'm trying to copy a 600g music folder from drive g to drive e. Original file from a third drive was put trough a tag editor and saved to drive g successfully. Have tried copy/paste, drag and drop and send to options. The drag and select show 13k items selected but when released over the intended folder, the copy files window pops up then disappears. Trying break into smaller transfers, was able to transfer half the "a"'s (716 folders) then was only able to transfer single folders.

There are some files where the location was lost in the renaming process or folders that got duplicated which show up as conflicts or options to skip copy or merge two folders in the file copy process at the end of the transfer. I am able to transfer files between the drives, just not this large folder. Western digital support says it's an operating system issue. I acquired the original files from four separate drives  by drag and drop recently with no issues. In compiling all the folders, maybe some errors have crept in, but i can't figure out how to find and eliminate them.

So on my one box here at work, i'm unable to use any usb thumb drives. When i plug them into the machine, they are recognized by the machine but never assigned a drive letter. When i go into disk management i note it identifies the disk, shows all the partitions but its status is offline. It won't permit me to put it online and gives me the message "the disk is offline because of policy set by an administrator. " I alone use these computers and no it guys touch them. Any thoughts on what and where this policy might be so i can change it?

Usb Flash Hard Drives Not Recognized

Since purchasing my computer, i've been able to use the various usb drives for other hardware such as wireless internet, hauppage tv reception, and wireless mouse/keyboard. However, any attempt at reading an external flash drive (then larger external hard drive) on all of the ports the drive is not successful. The drive appears in the device manager and is appropriately named, it is also listed in the disk management window as disc 5 (underneath the various sd drive ports and whatnot-one of which appears to be assigned the name of usb external hard drive when in fact it is not).

Upon attempt to reassign a drive path/letter the message appears that "disk management console view not up to date", but restarting does no good. Dell support is not supportive and claim it is a software problem because the ports work for other devices.

Front Usb Ports Overloading Flash Drives

My computer is an hp pavilion purchased this past christmas at best buy. About a month ago, after plugging my flash drive in to one of the usb ports and noticing that it didn't recognize that any device had been plugged into the system, i pulled the flash drive out with the intention of trying it over again. The flash drive was very hot to the touch, close to the point of being painfully so. I immediately tried plugging it into my laptop, with no success.

My wife then got her old flash drive and tried, just to see if it was a fluke, but the same problem occurred. The usb port ate her flash drive. It wasn't burning hot upon being removed, but the drive would no longer read when i plugged it into the laptop. It would recognize that a usb device had been inserted, but would be unable to discern what type of usb device it was and, as a result, fail to read it at all.

I have no idea whether the front usbs are shorted out or if this might be some kind of odd software issue. A friend of my wife seems to think the usb drivers need to be reloaded, but i still wonder if it isn't a short in the physical circuit. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? If so, what is the best solution? I've already contacted hp about it and they want me to mail them the tower for a complete system reload - back to factory conditions. I really want to avoid that with all the data i have on this computer, if at all possible.

Keep Win 7 System From Touching Usb Flash Drives

How do i keep windows 7 system from touching my usb flash drives when i use them? When i plug in a usb flash drive, i don't want any recyle bin or other hidden directories. I don't want any indexing progress bar. I just want my flash drive to be left alone so i can do what i want without any windows side effects, such traffic with the usb drive when i want to remove them.

Also i use truecrypt on some of my flash drives, not for encryption, but because i can get multi-cpu i/o. So i want these treated as described above when i mount them. How do i do that?

Cannot Find External Usb Hdd

I have just bought a new dell inspiron n5010 with windows & 64 bit. However i cannot get it to connect to my maxtor basic 500gb external usb drive. The drive works fine with my other vista laptops and when connected to the dell the light comes one and the drive spins suggesting the drive knows it is connected. The hdd has its own power supply. However nothing shows up on the dell.

Nothing in disk management and nothing in device manager. I have tested all the usb ports on the dell with a flash usb drive and they recognize that no problem. All the ports also recognize a usb mouse. I have raised this with dell who told me to reformat the usb hdd to ntfs (!). Needless to say that made no difference. Anyone got any ideas?

Losing Usb Drives / Devices When Working With Large Files

I keep losing my usb drives/devices when working with large/many files. Have to reboot to get drives back. Anytime i try to move a large number of files, or work with a large file (such as transferring to memory stick) my usb drives stop working. They still show up in explorer, but all file contents are gone. I have tried to use different ports, as far as i can tell all drivers are up to date. I have a dual boot to windows xp and in xp there is no problem with this. In xp i can move large and large numbers of files usb to usb with no problems whatsoever, but in win7 it just won't work.

Anyone else having this problem or heard of a fix for this problem? It does tend to get a little frustrating. Devices affected: wd mybook & essential usb hd's, usb memory stick, usb headset/mic, usb card reader, usb camera. Use of any of these with files larger than a few hundred mb results in freeze/lose device.

External Usb Hdd Not Recognised By Win 7

External usb hdd not recognized by win 7, and no longer recognized under win xp. Maxtor usb 300gb external hdd working fine on windows xp. Unplugged and attached to new windows 7 pc. Os responds by saying device found and working properly. I use the disk to download assorted files.

Then moved cpu a few feet (did not switch off or move usb hdd). Reboot, and usb hdd not seen as a working disk. Seems very unlikely that hdd damaged at this time. Manage disks shows the disk apparently working but not "initialized". Right click to initialize. Hour glass shows for ~2 seconds, and goes away, but disk not initialized.

Reattach to old win xp computer, and now looks the same as on the win 7 machine, not initialized and not unrealizable.gots lots of data on that hdd which i would like to keep, so have you guys got any new ideas?

External Usb Drive Initiated To Late

Today i switched from vista to windows 7. Unfortunately i noticed some problem with my external usb drive: wd mybook 320 gb. When i log in, in 75% of trials there is a pop-up that new storage device was found (the same when you put usb flash into your pc). Strange, because the disk is plugged into usb all the time. It means that when i log in just for a second the system does not see the drive, which has some some nasty consequences:

- Shortcuts directing to files on external drive are damaged
- Outlook cannot open archive folders on external drive (i have outlook in autostart)
- At startup system cannot reopen explorer windows (path not found)
- Etc.

After this faulty second everything is normal, i.e. Disk are discovered properly and the are working well. I tried to turn on login password (to give system more time), but it didn't help. This issue appeared neither in xp nor in vista. Is there any way to make system discover external drive sooner?

External Hdd Not Recognized By Usb Port

I have an external hard drive that is not being recognized by all of my usb ports on my laptop. When i connect to my third port, the computer recognizes the device and i am able to access the files on it. But, when i try to hook it up to the other two ports (located on the back of my laptop) the hd is not recognized. It receives power, however, because the power light comes on. Whats even weirder is that other devices, like my mouse and my ipod, are recognized by the back ports.

When i plug the external hd into these back ports, nothing happens, no "unrecognized device" messages or anything. I have tried a number of fixes, like reinstalling the usb drivers and updating the external hd's driver (its a toshiba). I don't know why the external hd is being recognized by one particular usb port and not the others! Any ideas?

External Usb 2.0 Hard Drive Not Detected

I am running windows 7 and trying to plug my 200 gb hard drive from an old computer with xp into my new computer via usb 2. 0 from an external enclosure. The external enclosure is has its own power source and does not require drivers. When i plug it in the usb port i hear the chime indicating window detects an external device and it will appear under usb devices in device manager but only for about 10 seconds and then disappears.

It never shows up under disk management nor under computer as a mass storage device. I have tried using other usb cables/ports. I have tried exchanging the external enclosure for a new one thinking the first was faulty but that didn't help.

Usb Flash Drives Device Driver Software Not Successfully Installed

Usb external drives, usb flash drives "device driver software not successfully installed". Acer and windows 7 problem. Not sure which one i am more frustrated with. Acer or microsoft trying to get decent customer service out of either seems so difficult. Ok, its a common enough issue.

I've seen this everywhere in other forums and every finger points back to microsoft. Usb flash drives, jump drives, memory sticks, thumb drives, whatever they are called, they don't work on my acer laptop. Yet all work perfectly well on my vista pc and my work xp. So they are not damaged. Also a freecom external 1tb usb drive. Doesn't work on win 7.

I have an acer 5338 (less than a year old) which sadly as windows as an oem so microsoft aren't interested in helping saying it's acer's problem. Acers website doesn't even acknowledge existence of the the model laptop i have which makes contacting them for a solution physically impossible (anyone got a phone number or email address>). Anyway they had a free upgrade to win 7.

(Oh you cannot imagine how much i wish i hadn't. ). So i upgraded. And all usb memory devices suddenly don't work. Ll of them try to load drivers then give up with the error message. Just to get the usual answers out of the way!I've tested the usb ports. All work. I've uninstalled all the usb ports and let win 7 re-install them. No problem i've cleared the file that keeps records of drives.

I did a new clean install. Nothing changed. Can't upgrade chipset drivers. Won't let me, says i don't need them every drive appears during the boot screen. Every drive appears in device manager but showing as fault. Updated, installed, deleted, re-installed every driver on the planet. Tried the 'regedit' solution suggested elsewhere, fragged my laptop, lucky i system restored up. Doesn't appear on disk management so can't deal with any drive letter conflicts. Have no virus.

Have only one firewall installed. Have prayed have hit the flipping thing have pleaded have pretended to cry. Not interested. So, i am hoping against hope that someone has a solution to this issue. I have a vague thought that it could be something to do with 'ports' and port settings. That, i am afraid is a closed book to me, so please, geniuses everywhere, give me something new to try! Or a way to speak to a human at acer!

System Shutting Down After Left Idle

Not sure if this is the correct forum. Every now and then, i come back to do something and my system has completely shut down, for no apparent reason. It is not restarting, but shutting down. I have not caught it, when it has done it. I push the powere button and it comes back up, and will either go for safe mode or regular start, either will work (though usually i do a safe mode and, scan the hd on restart). It did not happen with xp, but has been doing this for about 2 wks or more. I have  checked connections and the fans, all seems alright there. Anything i can check?

Access Denied With External Usb Hard Drive

I messed up on this one. I was removing advanced sharing on an external usb hard drive. First i turned off sharing, then i went to the security tab and removed "everyone" which was the only user listed. I got a warning that this would only allow the originator to access the disc. Since i was the originator i clicked okay. Bad move! Now i cannot access the disc. I now realize that i should have added "administrator" to the users when i deleted "everyone".

Now for the question. Does anyone know how to restore permissions on this ntfs external usb hard drive so it can be accessed? Since access is denied, i cannot restore permissions with the advanced sharing wizard in win 7 ultimate.
