Upgrade Installation Monitor Goes Out Of Range

Monitor goes "out of range" before windows 7 upgrade installation completes. Installation fails, or just stalls at that point. Help this is frustrating. There is no reason why you would think my computer would have a problem with this upgrade install. I had it custom built just this summer. Here are my components so you know what i have.

Intel core i7 920 64bit processor
Intel dx58s0 motherboard
3gb ddr3 ram
Xfx ati radeon hd 4870 1 gb ddr5
Running 64 bit vista business

I am a student so i figured i would download the windows 7 pro (x64) file from the msdn software site and take a stab at the upgrade. This allows you to download a valid iso image of the full version. I would then launch the .exe from a virtual drive. Starts just fine.

The compatibility part of the install wizard asked me to unistall itunes, the ati catalyst control center, the ati catalyst install manager, and microsoft live onecare. I completed these tasks and relaunched the install.

At first i was experiencing the install lag after the first reboot during the expanding windows files section, but it eventually completed. After the next reboot, the install wizard would get to the final transferring files section, appear to finish, and then my monitor is sent "out of range". Nothing happens after this point, i have waited at least 20 minutes during one attempt. It could be wanting me to continue and i just can't see it. I am not able to do anything else and i am forced to do a hard shut down, where on the reboot, the installation of windows 7 fails and rolls back to vista, which works just fine (a lone bright spot in this).

I have researched this endlessly for hours with no acceptable solution. I'm sure i can't be the only one to have had this issue. I have tried disabling my video card before the istall, made sure i had the latest drivers before the install. I've even tried to make sure my monitor is compliant. The w7 upgrade advisor also checked out perfectly fine.

This is not a problem that can be solved by rebooting in safe mode since the install never finishes, so please don't post that solution. I am also not having the 62% stall issue, or the constant reboot issue after it rolls back. This seems like a driver thing, or maybe an hdmi thing.

Any help would be appreciated. Also i would rather stay with vista than waste another day either attempting this upgrade without a solution explanation, or doing a complete install and reloading all of my files and apps. Maybe this fix hasn't come along yet, or i missed something. It just seems that my setup should have made for an easy upgrade, unlike those trying to install w7 on outdated hardware.

Ive tried booting from the cd i just get the message cannot boot form cd.code 5, ive tried three other monitors. Same result. To all intents and purposes i have no computer.

Error - Out Of Range - Monitor

"out of range" error appears on my monitor right before logging screen. Have this quite annoying little bug, when i boot up windows 7 it starts loading then suddenly my monitor will just go black and a "out of range" error will pop up. I've tried everything i know to fix this, logged in safe-mode and updated all my graphic drivers and still no luck. Currently in safe-mode as we speak. I believe it's something to do with my resolution, graphics card. I have a nvidia 9600 gs.

Monitor Out Of Range Issue

After doing a clean install of windows 7 on my computer, several "drivers" were not installed for my integrated motherboard including network, printers and scanners etc.

Device manager showed several issues, so i inserted the "motherboard" cd disk in and installed the drivers that were for that specific motherboard (my mistake).

Network started to work and i was able to access the internet (one step forward before my two steps backwards here). The motherboard installed something which caused the display to default to 600x800 or some low resolution.

I then went into the display properties and slid the slider to max and hit apply. Suddenly the monitor displayed a blue box stating "out of range".

I tried booting into safe mode, but once it made it through the boot process, the same out of range display message popped up. I can't do anything to access the display properties as the only thing i can see is the warning message. I am thinking that the only thing i can do is remove the graphics card and replace it with another hoping that the system will recognize it and change the settings. Other than that for a solution, is there another one?

Cannot Complete Upgrade - Installation Just Stops

Cannot complete upgrade from win vista home premium 64 to win 7 home premium 64 using student offer, installation just stops at transferring files, settings and programs with no hd activity. I have tried upgrading my pc from vista home premium 64 to windows 7 home premium 64 four separate times, using microsoft's academic upgrade offer.

I use the upgrade option in installation, have tried both "online get latest installations updates" and "do not get latest install updates" and my upgrade goes fine all the way to the end when it should be moving my files, settings, and programs over to win 7  from vista, this is after win 7 has been installed at this point everything just stops, no hd activity, computer is not locked up though, caps lock still works, can move mouse, can even hit the x button in the installation window and get the message "installation cannot be canceled now. Etc. ", But the computer is not doing anything because no hd activity, i even left it on for 8 hours and no movement what so ever once it gets to this point.

I ran microsoft windows upgrade advisor the downloadable one and the one win 7 installation runs, and according to it everything should upgrade fine. I know this is extremely frustrating, i updated my drivers and everything yet it still get stuck at the end. I think doing a custom install would work, but i did not want to have to re-install everything, if i would have wanted to do a clean install, i would have purchased win 7 professional for the same price as home premium, since it is the version i preferred, but just to lazy to re-install everything on my pc.

The pc i am trying to install it on is a new system, just built in march of this year, core i7 920 system, and i even took it back down to stock clock in the bios, just in case that was causing problems. Anyone have any ideas, besides doing a custom install?

Custom Installation Vs Upgrade Install

I'm planning on upgrading my vista 64 bit to windows 7 using my upgrade discs i got from hp. I'd like to make a clean installation rather than an upgrade install but there is a warning in the manual that if i choose to custom install, i may need to reinstall drivers that are not included in my discs. What does this mean? Does this mean that if i custom install windows 7, i may need to download programs in order to run my mouse, keyboard etc? (Sorry i'm an no computer techie).

Also just in general, is there a big performance difference between custom install and upgrade install?

Frequency Out Of Range

After launching a game my computer was switched to, (i believe) 1600x1200. That of course is to much for my monitor to handle, so the screen goes black, and in a blue box it says "frequency out of range. " (And the box bounces around the screen mocking me. ) If i try to restart windows it will happen again, so i have to start again in safe mode. I can't change my resolution in safe mode, and if i try to go into normal mode to change it i get ""frequency out of range, " and i can't see what buttons to press.

Display Is Out Of Range

I was messing around with my screen resolution because there was this site that was supposedly best viewed in a higher resolution! So i changed the resolution to a higher one and pressed execute or confirm, (i dont know the exact word in english) and the screen says "out of range" som i press escape and im back with my old resolution, but the drop down list is still set on the higher resolution, so i change it back to 1440x900 and instead of pressing confirm/execute before i press ok, i press ok by accident, and the resolution is still confirmed/executed in that higher res, so the screen goes black with a message "out of range" and now there is nothing i can do, i have tried to restart the computer and screen etc, but im lost, i cant get to my desktop!

Out Of Range Display Issue

I recently installed windows 7 ultimate 32-bit on my acer aspire t180. The install appears to be fine but when booting windows 7 in normal mode my monitor blacks out and says "out of range". I can boot in safe mode and have set the screen resolution to 800 x 600, max for the monitor is higher than that. My graphics card is directx 9. 0 compatible.

My best guess is that my graphics card isn't quite good enough or doesn't have an up to date driver, but i'm not sure how to fix it - most of the control panel options that look helpful aren't available in safe mode.

Will Upgrade Installation Require More Space On Boot Drive ?

I have a very small 32gb boot drive with vista premium installed. Will upgrade installation require more space on the boot drive? The boot drive i have is an 32gb ssd. Since ssds are so expensive i ordered this small one as a boot drive only. So will i need space available on the c drive to upgrade my windows vista premium 64-bit to windows 7 64-bit? I have a secondary hard drive as my f drive. It is 320gb and contains all my programs and games, leaving about 200 gigs left.

If space is indeed required from my c drive, is there an alternative way to upgrade?

Can I Re-use Installation Key To Upgrade From Premium To Professional On New Laptop?

I have purchased four computers, and return four computers because i've been told that the computers i have purchased would run the windows 7 professional in xp mode, and they do not.

I have now done research, and will return and purchase a new laptop which i am certain, according to the specifications, will run windows 7 professional in the xp mode.

My question is can i re-use the installation key to upgrade from windows 7 home premium to windows 7 professional on the new laptop i will be purchasing because i am returning the old one. Purchased the laptop on monday, the software, i purchased from a separate vendor when i purchased the initial laptop.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, but i know the new store will not trade my now invalid key code for the software i installed on the laptop i am returning to them.

Can anyone help me please?

Cannot Locate Driver Files For Ide Controller During Upgrade Installation

I just bought the windows 7 home premium upgrade family pack which entitles me to upgrade all three of my computers, i was told. I have installed it successfully on my gateway desktop with vista home premium without a problem. I anticipate putting it into my l vista laptop.

I've tried to update another xp dell desktop, but keep running into a wall. The installation program asks me to choose a hard disk partition onto which i should install the update. One of the partitions is marked "reserved", so i choose the other. But i can go no further in the installation until i locate driver files for the ide controller.

I've tried finding such files on the windows xp disk, in cwindowssystem32drivers (since that is where device manager says they are) and on the windows 7 disk itself. So far, no matter what driver file location i have tried, i cannot get beyond that point in the installation. I realized that upgrading windows xp to windows 7 would mean losing my data and other installed programs and am willing to do so because i'd like all my computers on the same os and the use of 'homegroup'. Please advise on how to get beyond this point in the installation.

Win 7 Upgrade Version - Installation On Reformatted Hard Drive

Win 7 (upgrade version) reinstallation following hard drive reformat. Need to reinstall xp now in order to activate win 7. I made the mistake of creating primary boot drives too small for an os other than xp or linux. Shortly after install i was unable to update my win 7 because of lack of space on the hard drive (all programs i could change the installation of, were on a separate drive). That meant i had to wipe the hard drive to repartition it.

I was under the impression that i could upgrade to win 7 after a clean install by putting the disk in and having windows check for it, like when i upgraded from me to xp. (Yes, i realize now the error of my ways. ) Now i need to fix it. Add to it, i have 32-bit xp and 64-bit win 7.

Having contacted microsoft tech support, i was told i could simply reinstall my xp and win 7 would recognize that it was there and set up dual boot. That isn't the case, as i suspected. In the reformat, i have lost some data that i thought i had backed up and obviously didn't, which is why i really don't want to reinstall win 7 a third time after reinstalling xp.

I have no windows. Old because of the reformat/repartitioning of my drive. Is there anything else i can do? (I'm so tired of being penalized with drm, activation etc. For purchasing licensed software because of all the pirates out there!).

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium 32-bit Failed Installation

I am attempting to upgrade from windows vista home premium 32-bit to windows 7 home premium 32-bit. I obtained this upgrade from a download, and my installation is failing.

At 21% of the way through the "expanding windows files" process, the installation quits with the following message:

"The upgrade was canceled. Any changes that were made to your computer during the upgrade process will not be saved. " And in a bow below that message: "setup can't continue. Your computer will now restart and your previous version of windows will be restored. "

No reason is given for the cancellation of the upgrade. I have, however, run the windows upgrade advisor, which has shown that my computer is fully compatible. All programs that it advised me to remove have been removed. I've also removed all external devices from my computer during the installation.

I fear i may have a corrupted installation file of some kind but am not sure of anything. I'd appreciate if anyone has any suggestions, or has been in this situation before and or knows what to do.

Dual Monitor Problem - 2nd Monitor Detected Black

Ok, so i have a dell that was running vista and two monitors. When i upgraded to windows 7 pro i ran into the infamous black screen problem and fixed it. However, i only fixed my main monitor. When i open the display window, both of my monitors are detected but my secondary monitor shows a black screen and the monitor itself says there is no signal detected from my pc.

The strange thing is my pc thinks its working (i can drag a window from my working monitor towards the black one and it moves out of my working monitor into the black screen). I currently have both of them plugged in using a dvi to vga splitter and i have also updated the drivers by clicking the "update driver" button in the monitor properties window. Please help if you can!

Cannot Move Windows From One Monitor To Other - Dual Monitor Setup

I have two monitors of the same resolution connected to an ati radeon hd 4300/4500 video card. In windows 7 extended mode i see a full working desktop on one monitor, but only the background picture on the other - the four-square flag motif again a blue background with wispy lines, butterfly etc.

No taskbar, icons or anything else. On one occasion briefly the mouse cursor appeared on it instead of on the full desktop image. If i try to drag a window on to the second monitor it won't go there. The settings are landscape with two mointors "1" and "2". I have two images but how can i use the second one?

Upgrade As Clean Install Using Upgrade Media Using One Hard Drive

I need help with planning my upgrade to windows 7 from windows xp pro. Can i do this upgrade as a clean install using upgrade media if i've only got one hard drive? I'm currently running 32-bit windows xp professional and want to upgrade to 64-bit windows 7 professional.

My laptop only has one hard drive on it, so installing "fresh" to a separate hd isn't possible. Since i already back up all my data to an external hd, i'd like to just format the internal hd and install windows 7 onto that. Will that be possible though using upgrade media? How does it verify my existing xp pro license?

How To Upgrade Hard Drive At Same Time I Upgrade To Win 7?

How should i upgrade my hard drive at the same time i upgrade to windows 7? I plan to upgrade my laptop from win xp pro to win 7 pro and want to at the same time upgrade my hard drive. I don't know what i should do to ensure that the win 7 install program recognizes the prior win xp installation.
Would it work to put the old (win xp) drive in an external enclosure connected via usb? Alternatively, what would i need to copy from the old hard drive to the new in order to have the win 7 install recognizes win xp?

Slow Installation

When installing win7 ultimate 64 bit to a new clean ssd i get to expanding windows files and the percentage meter goes up very slowly or hangs indefinitely. I sometimes get an error saying that it cannot read the media eg cd/dvd drive.

Things i have already tried to solve this:-

- Install 64 bit and 32 bit version.
- Download new 64 bit and burn slowly to disc.
- Check that all hardware is not faulty.
- Check that the hardware meets min requirements and is compatible with win 7.
- Remove all ram but one stick.
- Remove all unnecessary hardware.
- Enable/disable almost every setting in bios individually before install. This includes disabling floppy, usb etc.
- Installing win7 on a usb flash drive.
- Updated drivers, bios etc.
- Many other things i have forgotten by now that others have been successful with. I have run out of ideas.

Monitor Will Just Go Blank

I have an issue where my monitor will just go blank. The computer is running but no display. My first thought was that this is a display adapter/video driver issue but i not longer think so. Let me explain. My set up is a hp m9040n running windows 7 ultimate x64. I have a nvidia 9600 gso card that is less than 6 months old and use a samsung syncmaster t240 monitor.

This first started happening about one month ago right after i upgraded my video card driver to the latest version. I would be away from the computer for awhile and when i came back no amount of mouse shaking would bring the screen on. At that point a hard shut down and boot up would bring things back.

Thursday it got worse. Hard shut downs would not bring anything back but i would see the bios startup screen so obviously the monitor and display adapter has some output. I started in safe-mode and installed that latest driver from the nvidia website. No difference, in fact it appears to be the same driver that windows update put out.

My next step was to roll back my driver to the one that came with my video card. This kind of works. There are new symptoms now. Now what happens is that after working for awhile i would hear the usual kind of insert/disconnect sound (like plugging in a usb device) and then the screen resolution would change from 1920x1200 to 1024x768. For some reason the monitor according to the screen resolution control would go from my monitor to a generic. If i click on the detect button, the screen will blank out and once again i have to do a hard shut down. The hard shut down followed by a boot in safe mode and and reboot restores things to normal.
