Missing Menu Items In Control Panel View

I have just done a windows 7 upgrade install on my wife’s hp pavilion dv9725 laptop. I upgraded my sony vaio laptop last year to w7. Both pcs now use w7 professional. If i open e.g.control panel >> personalization - on the vaio i have a line of menu options "file/edit/view/tools/help" just below the back/forward buttons and address bar and above the detail window

On the hp pc there is no line of these menu options!
Why aren't they there?
How can i get them back?

Lost Java Control Panel

I've lost the ability to run youtube videos for some reason, i have, also, lost my java control panel in the windows control panel. I tried un-installing adobe flash player 10 active x and java 6 update 18, 32bit, even though i have a 64bit vista op sys, i tried the 64bit ver anyway but with no luck. I am running ie8 which i'm assuming is 32bit as it does not say 64bit. Also, when i go to  ie8/tools/internet options/advanced/settings  i see no reference to java at all. Even though java seemed to have installed ok. Any ideas on a remedy would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot Uninstall Programs With Control Panel

I am trying to remove several programs using control panel - add or remove programs. I receive the following error message -an error has occurred while trying to uninstall [name of the program]. It may have already been uninstalled. Windows then gives an option to remove the program from the directory. I did this hoping it would then remove the program itself, but no such luck. The program is still listed under start, all programs and runs properly when clicked on. Any help understanding why control panel thinks the program is uninstalled when it is not would be very helpful, as would a work-a-round.

Sound Control Panel Not Responding

Windows 7 x64 sound control panel not responding (except for volume). Not working: change system sounds, manage audio devices, playback devices, recording devices. All the sudden my windows 7 sound controls stopped working. I have a asus p6t se motherboard running windows 7 x64. Here's what works:

Audio icon -> volume control options

Which shows the following sound devices:

- Speakers (hd audio device)
- Digital audio s/pdif (hd audio device)
- Digital audio s/pdif optical (hd audio device)
- Ati hdmi output (ati hd audio device)
- Headphones (hd audio device)

What doesn't work (they all produced nothing when clicked on):

Audio icon -> playback devices
Audio icon -> recording devices
Audio icon -> sounds
Control panel view by large icon -> sound icon

Control panel view by category -> change system sounds, manage audio devices

Anybody have any clue how to get these controls back and working?

I tried:-

* Un-installing the audio driver and reinstalling automatically

* Updating the audio driver from asus's web site

The weird thing is it was working last night (apr/16) when i changed the system sound to headphones. When i restarted the computer, the above symptoms appeared and the sound was stuck to my hdmi connected monitor instead of my 5. 1 speakers. When i tried to do a system restore to april 15th, the above symptoms is still there. Weird since it was working after the 15th.

Control Panel / Devices And Printers Issue

My computer stopped accessing my laser printer after i shut off all power to my system when i went away for a weekend. The printer worked ok before that.

My inkjet printer is shown under printers on win 7's control panel/devices and printers page, but my laser printer is within a folder(?) Under devices (control panel/devices & printers/ken-office), and not under printers. Double-clicking on ken-office shows my motherboard manufacturer, gigabyte technologies, as the manufacturer of the ken-office device.

The inkjet has a usb connection, while the laser is on a parallel port (lpt3). The computer can access the inkjet, but the docs sent to the laser just stack up in the queue.

Thinking that i needed to install the laser again, i did so. Now i find that i have hp laserjet 4l and hp laserjet 4l (copy 1) both assigned to lpt3, and don't know how to delete one. It seems that dealing with this group of problems would be easier if the laser was out under printers instead of in the ken-office device.

Control Panel Doesn't Show

I have just upgraded from vista to windows 7. When i try to open the control panel, the icon shows on the tool bar and right click shows the options within the control panel, but nothing actually opens up. If i click on one of the choices i see a box fleetingly flick across the screen , only to disappear off the screen to the right. If i use the toolbar icon to close that option, the missing screen flicks back from beyond the right of the screen to the tool bar icon. If i start in safe mode i can use the control panel without any problems, but not if i start normally.

Can't Open Explorer.exe, Control Panel, Or Help

Brand new windows 7 computer - can't open explorer.exe, control panel, or help. Can't see or save to c: or d: drives. Got the computer last night, and it worked fine. But tonight i can only access ie, media player, etc.

I only have the default user account at this point, so i have admin rights. I haven't really done much yet since i just got the computer last night. I was going to transfer files from my old vista computer tonight, but i can't even open up explorer on my new windows 7. I tried rebooting, but it didn't help. I also ran the sfc; it did not find any integrity violations.

When i click on the folder icon on the task bar, i get a dialog box with a heading of "explorer.exe" and a message stating "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. " If i try to print a web page to xps, it doesn't commit the save on the c: drive (os and program files) or on the d: drive (data).

I have no idea why it is doing this! It is a brand new system. Last night i installed windows updates and changed the desktop background. I haven't installed any programs or transfered data. And it was just fine last night; this problem started when i turned it on tonight.

Classic Start Menu

I want to know how to get the classic format for the start menu. This question was previously asked by nice get but the ms engineer, debbie, who replied, missed the point. Start Menu Links Do Not Work

I'm using windows 7 ultimate. It was working fine. But a couple of days before, all the programs in my start menu have got file extension ". Lnk". Now whenever i try to open any program using start menu(eg: "adobe reader. Lnk" which should be adobe reader.exe"), it doesn't work/open. It seems like all the files in the start menu have been asked to open using internet explorer, so, may be, file extension has been changed to ". Lnk". Please give me an appropriate solution to resolve it.

Hidden Icons On Start Menu

I installed an old game (neverwintr nights) on my new win7 pro system and win7 told me that the game was not compatible when i tried to run it. So, i went and grabbed (manually) the latest patch and the game runs fine. However, the program group and program icons for the game do not show up on my start menu, even though they exist in the c:programdatamicrosoftwindowsstartmenu-programs folder, and they do not have the hidden attribute set.

The account i'm running under is an administrators account. Obviously there is some sort of setting, probably in the registry, which for my "safety" is blocking me from viewing and therefore using these icons. If someone could let me know how to turn off this very annoying "feature" i'd be very grateful.

Start Menu Closes Prematurely

I have got a problem driving me mad: as soon as i open my start menu or any other application's context menu it automatically closes within just a few seconds without notification or error. The crazy thing about this is the fact that it only happens when i log in using my usual user account. As soon as i create a new one on the same system, with the same set of installed applications and services, or simply log in as another user everything starts working just fine. I have already tried disabling every single application and service one by one when logged in as the problematic user but so far all in vain. Any ideas?

Changing Settings Start Menu - All Items Are Gone

I was changing settings in the start menu properties and all the items are now gone. These are the items that were there initially. Not sure what i did but i probably will remove all the items anyway and populate the start menu with my own items. Wondering what i could have done so i won't do it again. 2) in the start menu properties i don't see settings to display internet explorer and windows live mail. Do i really need to search for windows live mail in order to pin it to the star menu?

Moved Target All Programs Under Start Menu

I moved the target where "all programs" under the start menu points to. How do i restore it? I recently installed windows 7 professional over windows vista home premium. A windows. Old folder was created on my hard drive which stored all my previous files. Once the installation was complete, i moved all of my files back to where they should be. However, my program files (c:program files and c:program files (x86)) were not showing up in the "all programs" list under the start menu.

So in an attempt to remedy this, i opened the "all programs" folder by right-clicking on it, right-clicked the programs folder, then on the properties tab changed the location target to point to c:program files. Unfortunately, this did produce the desired results. Each program folder lists all sub-folders and files associated with that program (not just a shortcut to the program itself).

So how do i restore it back to the way it was? The original programs folder is no longer there. Also, if you know of the right way to have my programs appear in the "all programs" list under the start menu, that would be much appreciated.
