Formatting Hard Disk, Will I Need A New Key?

My pc has gotten really slow, so i'm reformatting my hd. However, i am worried that i will need to fork out another 70 something quid for a new upgrade key. I have a valid vista base install on my pc, so i will be upgrading from that. But still, will i be needing to purchase another key? Please can someone answer, and if no, explain what i need to do. Ps, i tried contacting ms support, but i need to spend £40 to ask a question, as it says my product id has expired. Any idea's?

Installing After Formatting Hard Drive

I have a lenovo t60 and started the process for formatting the hard drive. Prior to this i made the rescue and recovery cd that helped me get to this point. However, now the machine is asking for product recovery disc, this i don't have and the disc i made is not it either. I checked with lenovo and they would like to charge me $45 plus shipping to send the disc, windows xp pro. I really wanted to get windows 7 on this machine anyway. Can i purchase the upgrade at this point or do i need to buy something else?

Formatting Hard Drive During Installation

I'm doing a custom install of windows 7 professional from vista home premium. I'd like to reformat the drive before installing, but i'm not sure how. It's unclear to me whether that option will appear during the installation process or if it's something i have to do on my own. Which is it? How do i reformat my disk before the install?

Ok, i just chose which drive to install on and clicked "next. " The program started installing 7! I just wanted to see what the "next" part of the setup was to see if it had the reformat option. Anyway, is there any way to reformat at this point? Will i have to install windows 7, reformat, and reinstall? I'm rather frustrated right now. Note to microsoft: make the button say "install, " not "next. "

Hard Disk Cleanup

I did something dumb. I moved a program (not installed a program) to program files (not program files(x86)) of my local c hard disk. I realize it shouldn't be there and want it off. When i look at the instructions for disk clean up i get confused about what to choose and find that for such  a potentially ruinous application the instructions are too simplistic. I don't want to ruin anything and want to be sure i'm doing the right thing first. I have windows 7 pro.

The program does not show up at the control panel uninstall although the uninstall should be with the program. I can't find it anywhere. The program seems to work fine but i'd like to install it properly. Everything is working fine so i'd rather leave things as is if i would run a risk of any malfunctions. So if anyone out there can convince me on how to get rid of the offending program i'd bevery thankful.

Upgrade With New Hard Disk Drive

Vista 32 bit home premium (oem) to windows 7 64 bit home premium (upgrade) with new hard disk drive my current setup: i have a 2 year old hp laptop which came with windows vista home premium 32-bit pre-installed (oem). I have a partition on the hard disk that will allow me to 'restore' my system. I also received the 'restore' dvd from hp. I do not have the os re-installation dvd as this was oem (and hp doesn't give these out with their laptops) - i only have the 'restore' dvd / partition on the hdd.

I bought the windows 7 64-bit home premium (upgrade version) last summer when win 7 was released but have not had the time / courage to use it yet! (Laziness too!). Current problem: my laptop hdd is only 160gb and its already too full. This is what i want to do: i would like to replace my existing 160gb hdd with a new 500gb hdd and move from my existing vista 32-bit os to the new windows 7 64-bit os. If at all possible, i would like to do a clean install of windows 7 on
The new hdd instead of upgrading from vista to windows 7. Can this be done?

Hard Disk Space Unusable

I am using windows 7 32 bit edition on dell inspiron 1545. The specifications are
Intel core 2 duo
2 gb ram
250 gb hard disk

There is only one drive ( c drive ) in the partition. Only 232. 77 gb is allocated out of 250 gb. The problem is that 118 mb is unallocated. It was the oem's partition but i formatted it because i didnot knew what it was for. The left over 118 mb cannot be merged with 232. 77 gb. It only shows the option of creating new drive. On the other hand c drive does not show the option of extend volume. How can i use the 118 mb ? Do i have to format ?

Now i can't load windows 7 upgrade, does not get past compatibility check.compatibility report on my desktop was empty. Downloaded and ran the windows 7 compatibility software. It said that i was good to go for the upgrade. Tried to reinstall windows 7, did not get past compatibility check.

Change Hard Disk After Windows 7 Was Activated

I have one hp desktop with vista 64, i upgraded it to win7 by the upgrade disk mailed to me. My hard disk is 500g seagate. Thanks for the 7200. 11 seagate bad reputation, i might need to change it, in case burned. My question is :

Can i re-do the upgrade win7 on a different hdd in the future and activate it, or i have to stick with the same hdd after the win7 activated. What about motherboard, can i change motherboard after win7 activated? Or i have to change my mb before the win7 activation. Or put it this way, after the win7 activated, can i still change all the hw parts, or some restriction applied?

Unable To Use 2 Hard Disk Through Usb Connection Simultaneously

Unable to use 2 external hard disk through usb connection simultaneously connected - with each disk of different capacity. When using 2 external hard drive one of 1 tb another of 2 tb on a single computer together - one of them gets recognized properly the other one does not get recognized. Inserting the same drives one at a time make them work fine. The drives are seagate freeagent drives.

The computer nearly hangs when the drive that is not properly recognized is accessed. If it does not hangs it may show situations such as drive needs to be formatted - or does not have any data etc. I am facing these on problems in two computers - one core 2 duo desktop pc using intel motherboard and running windows 2008 server (with all important updates applied) and another core 2 duo dell inspiron laptop intel chipset running windows vista home basic (with all important updates applied). I am sure it is driver issue - but the drivers are provided by microsoft not seagate here.

Error Message - Disk Is Corrupt Or Unreadable - External Hard Drive

Seagate freeagent go 500g external hard drive usable in xp professional works fine, but when i try to use it on windows 7. I get the error message "disk is corrupt or unreadable ". Installed windows professional x64 11/16/09. Everything works fine, all updated drivers for motherboard chipset. Tried everything, i can plug it into windows 7 pro x64 and get an immediate prompt to reformat, followed by disc is corrupt or unreadable. I can disconnect immediately and plug into a xp home computer and it works just fine.

Tried doing the security allow all users so its not locked from this new computer, didn't work, installing drivers hasn't worked, basically at a loss here, not enough room to back it up on the working computer, format on the new, and reinstall it on newly formatted hdd.

Win 7 Sees External Usb Hard Disk But Can't Access It

I'm using windows 7 home premium and had a power supply go out causing my computer to shut down in the middle of moving some large files to a fantom 1 tb external usb hard disk. I've got the system back up and running (after repairing the boot disk that had a corrupt boot sector) but when i plug in the external disk, windows won't allow me to access files. It does recognize the drive when i plug it in but if i go to properties and try to look at drive details or do disk maintenance, it gives an error message saying it can't access the drive. Also, the external drive is not partitioned.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the fat or partition table that got messed up when the power went out. I ran the easeus data recovery wizard-it was able to access the drive just fine and tells me the data is still there.

Any thoughts?

Cannot Install Win 7 On Sata Hard Disk - Intel 945 Chipset Motherboard

I troubleshoot more than one pc with dual boot system which run windows xp and windows 7. Which system are most latest- intel g31 chipset, 2gb ram, 500 gb sata hdd, 2. 5 ghz intel dual core etc.
But, now i face some installation problem with my pc. Yesterday i run my pc smoothly with windows 7 with 2 ghz pentium 4, 1 gb ram, 80 gb pata hdd, 945 chipset motherboard etc. I need more storage area, so i purchase a hitachi 500 gb sata hdd. My motherboard has one pata connector and two sata connector. I use the pata connector to attach my hdd and dvd. They worked fine.

But, when i attach my new 500 gb sata hdd to sata connector and remove the 80 gb pata hdd. Only dvd attach with pata connector. I insert my windows 7 installtion dvd to the drive and restart my pc and go to bios. This is amibios. I find bios recognize the sata hdd as primary master and dvd to secondary slave drive. I also find sata drive mark in ide form. (Their also raid and ahci also available. ) I save the configuration and reboot. After reboot, when pc want to start from dvd, i press the space key from keyboard and the setup start to copy installation file in 2 stage and i find it complete the copy process. And pc going to start up, but, but a green color bar running through a tube for about 2 hours. Nothing happen. Read more at the forum.

Upgrade To New Hard Drive - Product Key Not Valid

My hard drive crashed - trying to install windows 7 upgrade to new hard drive - product key not valid. I upgraded my computer running vista to windows 7 with an upgrade disk - no problem. My hard drive crashed so i now have a brand new hard drive in the computer.

I boot from the windows 7 dvd but of course the product key is invalid because there is no operating system on the new hard drive. Is there a way to get around this without having to install an operating system on my new hard drive first?

Swapping Hard Drives, Single Activation Key

Ok, here is the thing. I am using windows 7 professional 64-bit on my laptop. Now i need a bigger hard drive (which i already ordered). The product key for my windows i got from my university. Now it is a single activation key. It is extremely retarded but yes, you use the key once, its gone. Now i going to attempt ghosting the hdd via clonezilla and swapping the hard drive.

My second option is using the windows backup and restore function (i already have a dvd using the iso image which university provides). Now, i just want to know if windows backup and restore function requires a reactivation of windows or re-entering of the product key. Also, what about clonezilla?  Does ghosting, in general, require reactivation?

Activation After Formatting / Reinstalling

I am looking to purchase and install windows 7 home premium (full-dvd) on 3 workstations. These workstations are constantly being "fiddled" with and may need to be formatted and re-installed.

Will i face any licensing restrictions if i install and activate on computer a, format computer a (changing no hardware), re-install on computer a and attempt to activate?

If this is allowed - how many times can i do this? Or does wga prevent my re-activation after x-amount of activations?

Printer Formatting Issue - Alldata Prints Incorrectly

I have new computer with windows 7, i use quick books v9, alldata, and alldata manage, also excel. The win 7 computer is the server to an xp based machine. Excel will not display correctly and will not print correctly. Alldata manage prints incorrectly. Looks like formatting issue because the print lines are cut in half horizontally.

Some parts of some print lines are misplaced vertically so that the horizontal line is choppy. Excel is same with displaying and printing. Quickbooks no printing problem. Also no problems printing from the xp machine using same programs and printer through the lan. I have attempted to download a new driver for the printer, but dont know how to check what version is installed.

Code Formatting Ignored By Rss Feed In Live Mail

Normally i would have used outlook explorer for news and rss feeds but it seems that you have to use windows live mail under win7. So i went about the business and added eric lippert's msdn rss blog feed and discovered windows live doesn't show the indentation of the code.

http://blogs. Msdn.com/ericlippert/default.aspx
http://blogs. Msdn.com/ericlippert/rss.xml

This sort of problem is pretty much a deal breaker for a developer to use windows live for staying up to date with rss/newsfeeds. Any ideas if this can be resolved?

Formatting Usb Flash Drive To Ntfs Causes A Red Bar

Reformatting usb flash drive to ntfs causes a red bar when used with readyboost vs. Blue bar in fat32, and hdd shows blue bar with ntfs. Is this a problem? Reformatting a usb flash drive to ntfs file sys allows full usage of flash drive storage cap. In readyboost but shows as a red bar in my computer while my hdd. Is also in ntfs shows blue. Flash drives formatted in fat32 also show blue. Does the red bar mean that that flash drive isn't compatible? Or is not working in windows7 64 bit?

Using 64-bit Key On A 32-bit Disk

I recently bought a windows 7 professional kit with both 32 and 64-bit versions. I installed the 64-bit version and it works great. Feeling emboldened, i bought another win7 disk in 64-bit for my amd laptop. It installed fine, or apparently so, but now the sound card and networking are not working correctly. What i want to know is this:

1. Since i bought [2] copies of windows (one of 64-bit and one of both 32 and 64-bit), can i go back, use the 32-bit install disk from my first purchase (since i installed the 64-bit version on my desktop) to install the 32-bit version on my laptop but use the 64-bit key to activate it?

Moving Data From 1st Disk To 2nd Disk

I installed my w7 on a single disk pc then i added a second disk for data. I want to have all my data (documents, photos, music, etc. ) In this second disk. In xp, when i did so, i copy my documents from "documents and settings" folder to the new location (d:/) and i was done. Now in w7 i open the "user" folder i found that files are not on a single folder but that there are several document folders (images, documents, etc. ) And settings folders (favorites, etc. ). May i copy all the user folder to the new location or i must leave there some of them in c:/system/users? In xp, when i move my documents to d:, every thing was redirected there (default1 saving folder, default download folder, defautl music folder, etc. ) In w7, would happen the same? The link on the desktop will redirect me to the location or may continue pointing the old one.

Disk Read Error And Recovery Disk Not Working

I have a toshiba satellite c650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that i have read about on the internet. I have made a windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has windows 7 installed. When i use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why i am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

Error - Logonui Exe No Disk - Outlook Exe No Disk

I have windows 7 professional running 64 bit. A very annoying error pops up every five minutes or so. The message varies and can read "logonui exe no disk" or "outlook exe no disk" or "your favorite app. - No disk" depending on what i am running at the time. I have looked at many forums and can see that this error occurred in previous windows flavors. Some answers point to malware or infected file, others seem to think it's a corrupt install file. I have a fresh install of win 7. My previous os being xp.

I have reinstalled win7 and tried repair functions. No luck so far.

I though that it will work because i am still using my previous hard drive.

3) running the recovery disks to re-install my copy of windows 7 pro or am i missing something?

Not Enough Disk Space

I installed windows 7 on my dell pc. The os is in d: drive. When i run windows easy transfer to retrieve my old files i get an error saying there is not enough disk space. Yet i have 198 gb free, it's supposed to take only about 116 gb. Now according to the easy transfer program it also wants to transfer some information to drive c:, though i didn't run the transfer program on drive c:, only on drive d: dell uses the c: drive with a only a small partition for some diagnostic programs. According to the transfer program, it wants to transfer about 83 megabytes of data, and theres only about 11 mb of free space left.

Am i going to have to get a partition program to make it a larger partition, or what? Also, when i run the transfer program and go to advanced options where it shows the drive mappings, it shows the drive mappings as c: -> c:, d: -> d:, and maxtor (where i had the easy transfer program store my files -> maxtor. I assume i need to change the maxtor to maxtor -> d:, is this correct?
