Cannot Change Users

I cannot change users. I have tried everything that is offered and nothing works. Is there a big secret? I am using vista home premier. I am not computer literate enough to go any farther than what is provided. I cannot create any new users, and if i try to change name it tells me it won't recognize all the figures from the bottom row of keyboard. , . /}{:?>< Etc. I have tried to share all the files but it requires a password and program will not let me create password.

Change Folder Name For Users Account

I set up my computer with account name "vdewan", and then changed it to "stuti" the c:/users/vdewan did not get renamed. I have tried to rename this folder to c:/users/stuti but rename is not an option on rt click of mouse.

Any ideas, i spent 2 hours with online chat with tech support but the kept giving me solutions like. Click on control panel, user accounts, change your account name. Sorry already did that, that is not the prob. Then they offered rt click on the folder, click rename. I already tried that. Log on as admin. I am admin. Stuti is an admin account, very frustrating!

Relocating C:users

I am about to do a fresh win7 installation on a brand new machine. I have always preferred to keep user data on a separate drive, in order to make it possible to back up all user-related stuff without necessarily having to back up the whole os.

In windows xp, it was possible to relocate the "documents and settings" directory to a drive other than "c:" by running an unattended installation. I am trying to determine whether a similar approach is necessary with win7, or whether there might be an easier way to accomplish the relocation of the "users" directory.

If the answer is that there is an easier way, i'd like to hear it. But if not, see below.

I have downloaded the waik, and its documentation, and i have been trying to find a win7 setting that would allow me to relocate the users directory. So far, i'm finding the documentation rather confusing, and i haven't yet located the right setting.

One Pc With Multiple Users

I have one pc with multiple users (with text-based passwords) oneguest account turned on (with a blank-password).

I want to share some files, some folders, and some libraries between different users but exclude guest users. I have not been able to do it with any of the share schemes that seem to always address computers on a network and not multiple users on a single pc.

What tools do i as the administrator use to share selected files, or selected folders, or selected libraries between selected user accounts on the same pc? Everything i tried in the "share" tools seem to fail for some reason that i cannot fathom. The entire set of files was copied over from a failed xp pc to a new windows 7 pc with specific files copied to non-public folders for specific users.

I know how to use the public libraries that all users can see, to include guest.

How To Make A Program Available To All Users?

How do i make a program available to all users if the program was installed for one user. Basically the problem is that i created another user account but only a few random applications show up on it and i'd really hate to have to reinstall some +50 programs so my computer can function normally on my secondary user account. I am able to locate many of the installed programs by snooping around in explorer and have been able to run a few by creating shortcuts, but many of them (spybot, itunes, google chrome, the list goes on!) Do nothing when the .exe is opened and are rendered useless (on that account).

Input Language For All Users

Is there a way to make the language toolbar stick for all users? In xp, if you turned on the language toolbar, it was on for all users. I can't seem to figure out a way to have it stay for all users. Each user seems to have to go to the control panel>clock, language and region>change keyboards options. I work in education so we'd like to keep from having to make every student that logs into a computer go through the steps of adding the keyboard layout each time they use a new computer.

How To Share Programs With All Users?

I set up standard user profiles in windows 7 home premium for my children plus couple of other users, but they cannot see or use any of the programs i installed under my admin account; such as ms office, itunes, etc, etc.

Could someone please help me understand how i make all programs visible to all users as there appears to be only two options when setting up a user account.

I recall that maybe i should have selected an option during program installation (ms office, itunes etc) to 'allow all users access' but do not recall seeing that option during installation.

This is my first windows 7 user experience having previously worked off xp pro.

Access By Users To Install Programs

I installed office 2010 as administrator, and now the programs do not show 'default-program' list for the other users (in the start menu). I can give them access to the programs, but cannot use them as 'default applications' for the associated file types, because they do not appear on the users' program lists. So the users can only open a .doc file by opening word and then finding the file in the directory. This is particularly annoying when trying to open an attachment to an email that is not saved to the pc

Users Cannot Logon Unless Given Administrator Rights

Users cant logon unless they have been given administrator rights. After the last windows update, i am the only one that can log on to my user account. All other user accounts that do not have administrator rights can no longer log on. If you attempt to log on to an account that does not have administrator rights it starts to log on, then it logs off, and then goes back to the screen were you choose which user you want to log in as.

If i give the other user to administrator rights they can log on, and everything seems to work fine. But i don't want to give administrator rights to other users just so they can log on (this is a quick and easy way for my kids to mess up my computer). What can i do to fix this?

Integrate All Programs And Eliminate Different Users

Windows 7 : is there any way to eliminate user accounts and just have everything under one user (administrator)? I want all the programs and documents to be available, but i'm the only one who uses this laptop these days and hate switching between users. Before you ask, i originally set up a user (mom) because the program told me to do so. Then there were some programs that i installed but didn't work properly - i later found out they had to be set up under "administrator. " Giving myself(mom) the user admin rights does not solve the problem, as the programs crash if they're run under any user but administrator. (I already know that they shouldn't crash out, but the fact is that they do. )
Unfortunately, 90% of my files, documents and programs are installed under mom.

How To Prevent Users From Ejecting Sata Drive ?

Hi, i've a second sata drive (wdc wd15ears-00z5b1 if it matters), that windows 7 thinks is removable, and shows in the "safely remove hardware and eject media" applet, allowing any user to "eject" it. The hard drive is not removable, but sometimes users (non-admin) occasionally click "eject" it and remove from the system, forcing me to restart computer to bring it back. How do i disable this functionality and tell windows 7 this drive is not removable and may not be "ejected" by my users?

Cannot Create Folder In Users Me App Data

Cannot create folder in usersmeappdata.
Applies to: windows | windows 7 | programs

I have an old application that creates a temp folder in usersmeappdataemp

When i log in as a local user, the application has no problems creating the temp folders necessary to run. However, when i login with a domain login (with domain admin permissions) the application cannot create folders.

My domain is running at the windows 2003 functional level, and has schema 47 (2008) installed.

I have tried:

Taking ownership of the folder
Giving "everyone" full control of the profile
Being enterprise admin
Running as administrator
Uninstalling and reinstalling
Making the domain users members of the local administrator group.

None of these things has helped. I am at the end of what i know to do. I currently have a case open with the software provider, but this doesn't seem like a problem with their application, since it works just fine as a local user.

Preventing Users From Remote Desktop Break

In xp, when one would rd to a computer the host computer would show potential users the computer was locked. If they were not admins, they could not break the lock. This was good. Now with 7 and vista, i am finding that the desktop appears "normal" to a user, no sign that anyone is logged in. Once they enter their username and password, they get a message that someone else is logged in.

If they answer the prompt to logoff the other user, the rd user is logged out. The person doing the booting is only a user. This is proving frustrating when i rd to a computer to try to resolve an issue just to find some user booting me out after 20 minutes. Is there some way to prevent a simple user from booting an admin from a remote desktop connection?

Install Programs - Win 7 Different Users Directories / Scheme

Will (installs of) programs such as itunes & adobe lightroom get confused by win7's different "users" scheme? On xp i had "my documents" physically moved (via properties) to a standalone drive (so i could have a certain backup of user-only files on a separate disk in case the os drive needed to be reformatted) wherein the well-written apps would install their user specific-data.

I was just about to (re)associate "my documents" to the xp "my documents", when i noticed the hierarchy is different in windows 7. Subsets such as "my photos" appear to be no longer inside "my documents" (?). After googling the subject, there also appears to be some question as to whether these new user directories even contain the actual data files.

I am almost certain that difference is going to confuse especially the reinstall of itunes (which is capable of very little tweaking in this regard), and it will not be able to locate my thousands of tunes and the album art (which are located on the separate drive:/my documents/my music/itunes.

Lightroom is also going to get confused, but i'm not as worried because it is capable of moving files around within its catalog, although it would be a pain to do. Questions are: can i rearrange this hierarchy back to xp's, and then point them to the separate data drive, or is there more going on here than i described above?

Can this all be done with properties? And what does the lock symbol on the new folders mean?  Is there a document somewhere that discusses this difference in detail so i can figure out how to set this up?(I am running win7 ultimate on a home-built pc with a separate drives each for physical storage of video, audio, and photo. )

Logged In Users / Remote Desktop Connection Session

I have two computers with windows 7 ultimate x64 edition and am wanting to be able to log in to my account from each computer on each computer when i'm at the other computer. The problem i'm having is that when i try to connect to my computer at my grandparents from my computer at home, and my grandfather is using it, remote desktop connection displays a message that a user is already logged on and that he will be disconnected if i connect. I need to be able to use remote desktop even if users are already logged in without logging them out. Is this possible?

I mean if you can "switch users" and have more than one user logged in locally, why can't or how do i do the same remotely? I search around and found hacks about multiple concurrent remote desktop sessions but i need the same to apply to locally logged in users as well. If this is a limitation of windows7 i seriously wonder why i always spend the extra money for the ultimate edition if it still has all these home edition limitations and crippled features.

Wireless Connected To A Domain For Multiple Users On The Same Laptop

I am in a hospital setting. We have several wireless laptops where users will need to connect to the wireless network and be able to login to active directory. I have found a way to do this for a single user on the laptop but these laptops are used by multiple users. Windows 7 will use one users domain credentials to connect to the wireless network and also login to the domain, but it will not do this for any other users that use the laptop. It appears that it will only remember one users credentials. I assume this is by design but i was wondering if anyone knew of a way to do this for multiple users on the same laptop. I know i could create a single service account to accomplish this but we prefer not to do this for security reasons.

Any other suggestions?

Taskbar Change

Today i noticed that when i scroll over the icons on the taskbar i no longer get a small image of what would be displayed on the screen if i clicked on it. I only get a small grey rectangle that gives me the information in text form. For instance, when rolling over the internet explorer icon that was previously opened as the google page, instead of the image of the google page i get a small grey rectangle that says "google - windows internet explorer". Can i change this back to what it was before easily, or what caused this to happen?

Cannot Change Background

I have an hp pavilion and i recently put windows 7 on it my backgrounds were fine when i first installed it.

I search the internet for a good picture i want to use for my background. I right click it. Then set as desktop background. Then the window that asks the position, color, and has a preview on it pops up. I click set desktop background. The window stays there. (I'm sure its supposed to disappear), and the taskbar flashes then goes away without any change to my background.

Ive tried changing my theme background. When i choose to change the desktop background in my theme it shows that every picture i have is selected. I go through all the picture locations and deselect all of them. When i go back to a picture location that i have already deselected all of the pictures in it are selected again. ? I don't get it

Right now my background is stuck at a solid color and that is the only thing i seem to be able to change about it

I cant say for sure but i think this all started after i installed the last update. I dont want to mess things up by undoing important updates.

Com Ports Change Itself

I will try and keep this short. I was using the com 1 on my hp to key my radio. That computer died and i got a new one that has no com ports so i got a usb to serial adapter and it seemed to work but then on its own it will key the radio 3 or 4 times then switch com ports on me. I can reconfigure it and reboot and then it works (for a period of time) then does it again. Any ideas?

Other devises are working fine on 2 other adapters but they have software that controls them where this one being used for push to talk on the radio (for digital communications) does not it is just relying on the voltage change from dtr dts and ground to key a small circuit that in turn keys the radio, when the voltage drops back to normal it unkeys the radio. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and feel free to email direct to email removed for privacy if you like.

Change User Name

When i very first set up my new pc (windows 7) and input some details, it asked for a name for the pc so i put clements in (this is my surname). Now i find when i go into my computer/c drive/users, there is a user entry for clements and i really want that to be trevor (my first name). I do have an initial login box of trevor when i power up the pc , but i want my user name under c drive to be trevor as well. Can i somehow change it or change the name of the computer to be the same?

Change 64 Version To 32

I purchased a window 7 home premium family pack upgrade. On the initial desktop i decided that i would upgrade to the 64 version. However i now find that two programs that i use, autocad 2006 and cs2 do not have 64 versions on the cds. I will therefore have to upgrade if i want to go down that path and since i am nearing retirement i do not want to go down that road. If i un-install the 64 version reformat and load the 32 version will that still count as one of my three upgrades?

Hence i would still be able to upgrade my wife's desktop and our laptop. The alternative is i believe to keep the 64 version and to load a virtual program and install my vista 32 version and run both autocad and cs2 in this virtual program. If this is possible how easily is it to switch between the 64 and 32 versions and will the 4gb ram i have be sufficient, or do i need more ram to run both versions at the same time? Finally if the virtual program is the way to go what virtual program should i download?

How To Change Monitor Assignments?

I did a clean install of windows 7 64bit. I have a 9800xt gpu. After i got everything installed and stable i added my tv to the second video port. What i want to do is have the tv as an extended desktop and run my video on it. I now have two problems. The first is that my monitor assignments got swapped - my pc monitor is no #1 and my tv is now #2. This creates alkl kinds of problems. When i boot bios is displayed on one screen and windows on another. Another problem is that running extended desktop my icons appear on the tv and my pc monitor gets the windows default background.

I want it the other way around. All i can do now is clone but this has it's problems. The last issue is that when i run media centre full screen my mouse pointer disappears. I've tried removing the drivers and reinstalling. No matter what i cannot change the monitor assignments. Does anyone know a way to do this?
