Cannot Boot From Hdd

Just installed windows 7 pro upgrade onto a hdd previously containing windows xp sp3. Windows 7 runs absolutely fine as far as i can tell. However the system has been booting to dvd, which has then passed over to the windows 7 install. When changing the bios settings back to boot from hdd first, i get the error "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, please reinstall". As far as i can tell, this is a hangover from the old xp installation, and windows 7 is not even trying to start. I've run the startup repair service from the windows 7 dvd once and all that did is unnecessarily run a system restore.

Drive Not Accessible At All On Hdd

I have a 500gb hdd. It had been partitioned into 2 drive, g:/ and h:/. I have no idea why g:/ is not accessible but h:/ allow me to go into the drive. Hence, i logon as administrator and found that g:/ is actually accessible. I can delete, move and copy files. I even set it all allow on permission.

When i login in back to my user/administrator mode, i am still unable to access the drive at all. Base on all the drives i have on my computer, everyone of i will indicate how many disk space i have left except for g:/, which there's no bar for me to view it at all. Can someone help me with it? I'm totally lost. And also, why at times i have to login as administrator to install certain stuff when i am the administrator as well?

Win 7 Upgrade On New Hdd

I will be replacing the hdd in a pc previously running windows xp. I plan to take this opportunity to upgrade to windows 7 and have bought the upgrade version. I can first reinstall xp on the new hdd from the oem cd if needed. Naturally, i would rather skip that step and just install windows 7 from the get go. Presumably, to authenticate illegibility for installing the upgrade version of windows 7 on a completely empty hdd, i will need to use my old xp cd and/or product key at some point. I've seen instructions elsewhere on this site that say to leave the win 7 product key box empty during setup in that situation, but it's unclear what happens then. Can anyone tell me how this is done?

External Hdd Corrupted

I use 2 external 250gb hdd's with my laptop to backup files from the office server and desktop machine. One evening i left in a hurry and closed the lid and hurriedly removed all usb devices. When reconnecting the drives (to the same laptop) i did not pay attention to the usb ports and in fact they were connected opposite to original. After working for a while i tried to access the external hdd's but was unable to. I tried swapping the drives around but it seems too late.

One of the drives could not be accessed at all and i am currently trying to recover important live files from it. The other drive reported that the recycle bin of the drive was corrupt and i accepted the message to "repair". I still cannot access the files on that drive and may have to go through the file recovery process on that one too, unless there are any suggestions?

Adding Data Hdd

I have just installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on a new hdd - the installation went perfectly. I now want to add another hdd (internal), to use as a data drive. I have been using this drive to store all my data from another installation of windows 7 (32 bit). Whilst i can see all the folders, when i attempt to open some folders (but not all) to access files i receive a message saying i don't have permission. I am the only person using the computer, i.e. I have no additional profiles or anything.

How can i fully access this data drive, with full read/write capability? I will also want to use the same drive when i use it with my windows 7 32 bit installation too. I imagine it is something to do with granting permissions or sharing, but i'm not sure what. Any suggestions?

Reinstall Upgrade On A New Hdd

Background: 1 year old dell, originally vista home installed, upgraded to windows 7 professional, which required reformatting the drive and original os partition was removed in the format. Upgrade when fine and system is up.

Now, i want to move the os to an intel ssd drive. I am expecting to run into a roadblock trying to get windows 7 loaded, becuase the drive will be new, no os on it. Any way to do this without having to buy a new copy of windows 7?

File Transfer To External Hdd

External hdd: adata nh-92 500gb
Computer: asus g51jx

I'm trying to move an iso file from my desktop to the aforementioned external hdd, but when i drag the file over to the hdd, i get a window that pops up saying that "the file is too large for the destination file system. " Is the problem really because the file is too big (7. 86 gb), or is there something that might be wrong with my computer? I think it may be because of my laptop because i got this file from my friend's external hdd, so if he could copy it on to his external, why can't i?

Lost Files From External Hdd

Recently i have bought a new computer with windows 7 32bit. With it i am using an external wd hard drive(fat 32) that i had been using with my previous win xp computer. I had been using this drive to store documents, movie/dvd images, my music collection and family photographs. The problem started when i thought the best solution to transfer some music files from my old computer fixed hard drive to my new computer, was to transfer them by plugging in my external hdd via usb into my old computer. The transfer went ok but when i opened explorer all that was displayed was the files that i had transfered and all my previous files(docs movies music and family photos had disappeared. I then ran scan disk to no avail.

When i run disk cleanup i am told there are 252gb of old chkdsk files obviously these are my files, but i don't know how to restore them. I have downloaded two data recovery programs (recuva and diskdigger) these programs each took about 7 hour to run, but neither did what i wanted. Any ideas?

Slow Hdd Copy Speed

I'm getting very slow copy speeds, no matter if its installing a game from a dvd (retail), or copying files over the network. I never get over 12 mb/s. I opened resource monitor for disk and it looks to me like files are first copied to the c: (ssd) and then to my target drive (hdd raid0). I have tried turning off disk cache and the swap file. I'm still getting very slow copies. I understand why the ssd is the bottle neck, but how do i make it stop going through the ssd.

System specs:intel dx58so with 975 chip kingston 64 gb value ssd (os drive)4x 1tb samsung hdd in raid0 samsung blu-ray reader dvd-rw6 gb kingston hyperx 1600 windows 7 pro clean install (retail)

Files Gone From Another Raid Hdd Array

Windows 7 upgrade torched all mp3's, documents, pictures files that were on another redundant raid hd array. Just did the vista - win7 upgrade. Made sure everything was securely backed up on my second hard drive - actually a mirrored 2 disk raid array, though on the same system. Kicking myself for not disconnecting the drives because after the install everything is gone! 150 gigs of mp3's, years of documents and photos, everything.

Two funny things:

1) the file structure is intact. Ie, i can click through folders, say e: -> music -> u2 -> joshua tree. But then i am greeted with an empty folder. The entire file structure remains but every folder is empty

Except .

2) bring up the disk's properties window and it shows that the space is being used. The files add up to around 230 gigs and the system shows this space as in use. Click properties on any individual folder, though - ie on my music - nil.

Things i tried:

Chkdsk - no errors. Various (free) file recovery programs - no deleted/corrupt files found to recover removed drives and installed into an external hd enclosure. Identical problem, both on the target system and on my laptop that is still running vista.

Hdd Problem With Sleep Mode

When the computer goes into suspend, it hangs the hard drives, and doesn't spin them down. Im using win 7, 64, and i am wondering if theres a control panel or something that governs how the computer suspends itself. Im curious to know if you have ever heard of hdd's that do not have the spin-down feature in them. Why i am curious, is that these 2 250gb hdds came out of a raid array, and they are spec built to be continuous (for server type use that never spin down)which may be the problem. I don't know if its hardware or software.

Cannot Find External Usb Hdd

I have just bought a new dell inspiron n5010 with windows & 64 bit. However i cannot get it to connect to my maxtor basic 500gb external usb drive. The drive works fine with my other vista laptops and when connected to the dell the light comes one and the drive spins suggesting the drive knows it is connected. The hdd has its own power supply. However nothing shows up on the dell.

Nothing in disk management and nothing in device manager. I have tested all the usb ports on the dell with a flash usb drive and they recognize that no problem. All the ports also recognize a usb mouse. I have raised this with dell who told me to reformat the usb hdd to ntfs (!). Needless to say that made no difference. Anyone got any ideas?

Bios Sees New Hdd, But Win 7 Does Not

I just did a fresh, successful install of windows 7 pro. Very happy with it. The boot drive is a 80gb sata drive, residing on sata port 0. I also have a dvd+-rw sitting on sata1. No problems with either of these following windows 7 installation.

I decided i wanted to add more storage, so i bought a new seagate 1. 5tb sata drive. I completed the physical installation of the drive, connected it to the next available sata port (sata2). I turned the machine on, went into bios, turned on sata2 in bios, saved the settings, and booted as normal. I saw a notification window from the task bar indicating the driver for the new hd installed successfully.

However, the new drive does not show up anywhere in windows 7 - not in the device manager, not in the control panel, not in drivemanger. Msc, nowhere i would expect to see it. I powered down, powered back up and went into bios. Bios reports that there's a nice 1. 5tb sata drive installed on sata2.

How is it that bios can see it, but windows 7 can't? Any advice on how to get this working so windows 7 can use it? System is functioning perfectly otherwise.

Resets Bootable Flag On Hdd

I have four partitions on my hdd with windows 7 on the second one. I want the boot flag ( boot flag - wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) on the first partition and only on it. It contains a menu, that gives me a choice of what os to boot. Whenever i boot windows 7 from the second partition, it resets the boot flag to the second partition only and thus i can't get back. How do i tell windows 7 not to do this? Alternatively, is there a way to reset it manually from within windows 7 so i don't have to boot a rescue cd?

External Usb Hdd Not Recognised By Win 7

External usb hdd not recognized by win 7, and no longer recognized under win xp. Maxtor usb 300gb external hdd working fine on windows xp. Unplugged and attached to new windows 7 pc. Os responds by saying device found and working properly. I use the disk to download assorted files.

Then moved cpu a few feet (did not switch off or move usb hdd). Reboot, and usb hdd not seen as a working disk. Seems very unlikely that hdd damaged at this time. Manage disks shows the disk apparently working but not "initialized". Right click to initialize. Hour glass shows for ~2 seconds, and goes away, but disk not initialized.

Reattach to old win xp computer, and now looks the same as on the win 7 machine, not initialized and not unrealizable.gots lots of data on that hdd which i would like to keep, so have you guys got any new ideas?

System Process Locking External Hdd

I have a seagate freeagent desktop 750gb external hdd connected via usb port. When i connect the device to windows, it is immediately locked by a system process that i cannot shutdown. I ran some sys-internals tools and found the culprit.

C:>handle h:

Handle v3. 2
Copyright (c) 1997-2006 mark russinovich
Sysinternals -

System pid: 4 1c8:
H:$extend$rmmetadata$txflog$txflogcontainer00000000000000000001

H:$extend$rmmetadata$txflog$txflogcontainer000000000000000000002
System pid: 4 288: h:$extend$rmmetadata$txf

I am aware that these files are part of transactional ntfs system which was present in vista, im unsure if win 7 has this same feature or an updated version.

I cannot delete these files since they are protected operating system files, i cannot unlock the process locking them so how am i supposed to safely eject my external drive. I have another external drive, a small wd passport which does not get locked by windows in the same manner therefore i have concluded that these system files on my external are remnants of vista (my previous os). My wd passport was never connected to a computer running vista.

Please do not tell me to format my drive because it's filled with data i cannot backup to an alternative right now. This is beyond infuriating, i have been trying to solve this issue on my own for days trying numerous methods.

Win 7 Not Showing Usb Hdd In My Computer

System: hp pavalion a6334f, running windows 7 home premium 32 bit upgrade with a fresh install. Intel core 2 duo e4500 @ 2. 2 ghz, 3bg of ddr2 ram. Okay just to cover all the bases here i will let anyone who erads this know, drivers are all updated, and the device is *working properly*  when reviewed under device manager, the devices i use are recognized, and appear to be working fine.

Okay, so basically no usb harddrive i plug to the system is showing up under my computer, i am unable to view contents of various harddrives whatsoever, ive tried multiple usb ports, multiple h. D. D. Enclosure casings, and power cords and usb cables, i have ruled everything with regards to faulty drives, enclosures, wires, and ports. But windows 7 just wont show the drive in my computer.

External Hdd Not Recognized By Usb Port

I have an external hard drive that is not being recognized by all of my usb ports on my laptop. When i connect to my third port, the computer recognizes the device and i am able to access the files on it. But, when i try to hook it up to the other two ports (located on the back of my laptop) the hd is not recognized. It receives power, however, because the power light comes on. Whats even weirder is that other devices, like my mouse and my ipod, are recognized by the back ports.

When i plug the external hd into these back ports, nothing happens, no "unrecognized device" messages or anything. I have tried a number of fixes, like reinstalling the usb drivers and updating the external hd's driver (its a toshiba). I don't know why the external hd is being recognized by one particular usb port and not the others! Any ideas?

Blue Screen When Hdd Is Used At Maximum Rate

My laptop is asus x50gl ap115 and i experienced serious problems in xp and windows 7 with it. It work perfectly with vista but i like windows 7 way more. The problem with windows 7 is that i sometimes get blue-screen ( wich i was told that don't exists with vista and windows 7 ) or it freezes. This happens when my hdd is used at maximum rate or in that area, more specifically, when i download movies from network or stuff like that. The configuration of my laptop is easy to find on www, i haven't made any changes to it. I don't have at this time any details of that error(bluescreen) but if needed i while take some pictures or something.

Swap Hard Drives After Copying Win 7 To Another Hdd

I installed windows 7 on my 1st 1 tb hard disk. I partitioned it after wards and could not get the c partition smaller than 1/2 tb (because files are blocking it at that point) with the remainder 1/2 tb calling itself e, which i can not change to d? Is it possible to copy windows 7 on to my second 1 tb hard disk from the first (which i will partition beforehand to 50 gb and 950 gb, which i prefer) and then after that swapping the 2 hard disks internally?

Hdd Visible In Devices And Printers But Not Recognised In Explorer

I have two external storage hdd - a 320gb buffalo ministation (it has a samsung drive inside) and my principal backup drive is a western digital 1tb drive. I bought my new notebook four months ago (acer aspire 4740) and upgraded the ram to 4gb. Over the past two days my notebook has ceased to recognize either of my external drives in the explorer although it does the drives are connected when one looks under "devices and printers". I have taken the following steps:1. Checked the drivers are up to date2. "In win7, go to device manager. Uninstall the external hard drive. Unplug the usb cable. Plug it back in. Voila.

I know it seems simple and it was but it took a long time to figure out. " This came from a form here (http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/w7hardware/thread/630f7c23-3dff-4df3-8557-d7897e42549d?Prof=required)this has all been futile. Ironically my older notebook, which runs xp, gives me full access to both the drives. Please can somebody offer me some advice on how to deal with this issue.

Raid Hdd Was Not Assigned Drive Letters After Install

Boot manager installs on wrong hdd and raid hdd's was not assigned drive letters after install. This is first time i installed windows 7 and after updating motherboard bios and mixing the hdd boot order i find out in the end that the files windows require has been installed on my mirror raid instead of the system disk stripe raid. This annoys me a bit, do i have to plug out all my hdd's except the ones i want to install windows 7 on to ensure the booting is independent of other hdd's?

(Another annoyance was that the mirror raid did not show up under my computer, which after installing every driver known to man i found that a drive letter had not been assigned. )
