Upgrade After Hard Disk Crash

Purchased upgrade directly from microsoft was one of the first to receive it. Installed it successfully last fall. Had a hard drive crash (seagate firmware problem) and my backup drive did not recover operating system (also seagate, 0 for 2). Had to reinstall vista using recovery disks. Now i can't load windows 7 upgrade, does not get past compatibility check.compatibility report on my desktop was empty. Downloaded and ran the windows 7 compatibility software. It said that i was good to go for the upgrade. Tried to reinstall windows 7, did not get past compatibility check.

Upgrade With New Hard Disk Drive

Vista 32 bit home premium (oem) to windows 7 64 bit home premium (upgrade) with new hard disk drive my current setup: i have a 2 year old hp laptop which came with windows vista home premium 32-bit pre-installed (oem). I have a partition on the hard disk that will allow me to 'restore' my system. I also received the 'restore' dvd from hp. I do not have the os re-installation dvd as this was oem (and hp doesn't give these out with their laptops) - i only have the 'restore' dvd / partition on the hdd.

I bought the windows 7 64-bit home premium (upgrade version) last summer when win 7 was released but have not had the time / courage to use it yet! (Laziness too!). Current problem: my laptop hdd is only 160gb and its already too full. This is what i want to do: i would like to replace my existing 160gb hdd with a new 500gb hdd and move from my existing vista 32-bit os to the new windows 7 64-bit os. If at all possible, i would like to do a clean install of windows 7 on
The new hdd instead of upgrading from vista to windows 7. Can this be done?

Ms Office And Internet Explorer Crash After Upgrade

Microsoft office and internet explorer crash after upgrade to windows 7 premium 64 bits. I bought my pc in october just before windows 7 was released. It came with vista premium 64 bit and a voucher to get windows 7 as soon as it was released.

I did get my copy of windows 7 via the retailer and did the upgrade (i would have preferred a clean install but apparently that was not possible). After that the system is microsoft unfriendly. All other applications work without problem but all microsoft stuff just crashes.

- Internet explorer crashes if you try to open any internet shortcut. You can only open a blank
Page and then type in a url. If you click on any url shortcut anywhere else, it craps out. Whenever i reenable ie (windows features) then it re(installs) [we all know it is there all the time], win restarts for the update to the system and as soon as i open ie. It says "internet explorer stopped working" followed by "windows is looking for a solution (that never finds)" and after than the only alternative is to debug or close. Ie is totally useless on my system. Firefox on the other hand still works like a charm.

- Office applications such as excel and word crash if you click on any microsoft office document
Shortcut. You can only open a blank document and then use the file dialog to open a document.

- Outlook crashes after the wizard.

All in all, the entire microsoft suite has gone to craps. I have uninstalled ie, i repaired office, i removed and reinstalled office but the problems continue.

Reinstalling win7 and reconfiguring my system will take at least a couple of weeks and i need it to do my work. All other applications (third party) work without a glitch, all microsoft applications are crashing. Besides if i reinstall win7 i will have to go through the hassle of reactivating kaspersky without loosing my 3rd license as well as flight simulator x which was also activated.

And no, it is not my antivirus (kaspersky 2010).

Hard Disk Cleanup

I did something dumb. I moved a program (not installed a program) to program files (not program files(x86)) of my local c hard disk. I realize it shouldn't be there and want it off. When i look at the instructions for disk clean up i get confused about what to choose and find that for such  a potentially ruinous application the instructions are too simplistic. I don't want to ruin anything and want to be sure i'm doing the right thing first. I have windows 7 pro.

The program does not show up at the control panel uninstall although the uninstall should be with the program. I can't find it anywhere. The program seems to work fine but i'd like to install it properly. Everything is working fine so i'd rather leave things as is if i would run a risk of any malfunctions. So if anyone out there can convince me on how to get rid of the offending program i'd bevery thankful.

Hard Disk Space Unusable

I am using windows 7 32 bit edition on dell inspiron 1545. The specifications are
Intel core 2 duo
2 gb ram
250 gb hard disk

There is only one drive ( c drive ) in the partition. Only 232. 77 gb is allocated out of 250 gb. The problem is that 118 mb is unallocated. It was the oem's partition but i formatted it because i didnot knew what it was for. The left over 118 mb cannot be merged with 232. 77 gb. It only shows the option of creating new drive. On the other hand c drive does not show the option of extend volume. How can i use the 118 mb ? Do i have to format ?

Change Hard Disk After Windows 7 Was Activated

I have one hp desktop with vista 64, i upgraded it to win7 by the upgrade disk mailed to me. My hard disk is 500g seagate. Thanks for the 7200. 11 seagate bad reputation, i might need to change it, in case burned. My question is :

Can i re-do the upgrade win7 on a different hdd in the future and activate it, or i have to stick with the same hdd after the win7 activated. What about motherboard, can i change motherboard after win7 activated? Or i have to change my mb before the win7 activation. Or put it this way, after the win7 activated, can i still change all the hw parts, or some restriction applied?

Unable To Use 2 Hard Disk Through Usb Connection Simultaneously

Unable to use 2 external hard disk through usb connection simultaneously connected - with each disk of different capacity. When using 2 external hard drive one of 1 tb another of 2 tb on a single computer together - one of them gets recognized properly the other one does not get recognized. Inserting the same drives one at a time make them work fine. The drives are seagate freeagent drives.

The computer nearly hangs when the drive that is not properly recognized is accessed. If it does not hangs it may show situations such as drive needs to be formatted - or does not have any data etc. I am facing these on problems in two computers - one core 2 duo desktop pc using intel motherboard and running windows 2008 server (with all important updates applied) and another core 2 duo dell inspiron laptop intel chipset running windows vista home basic (with all important updates applied). I am sure it is driver issue - but the drivers are provided by microsoft not seagate here.

Error Message - Disk Is Corrupt Or Unreadable - External Hard Drive

Seagate freeagent go 500g external hard drive usable in xp professional works fine, but when i try to use it on windows 7. I get the error message "disk is corrupt or unreadable ". Installed windows professional x64 11/16/09. Everything works fine, all updated drivers for motherboard chipset. Tried everything, i can plug it into windows 7 pro x64 and get an immediate prompt to reformat, followed by disc is corrupt or unreadable. I can disconnect immediately and plug into a xp home computer and it works just fine.

Tried doing the security allow all users so its not locked from this new computer, didn't work, installing drivers hasn't worked, basically at a loss here, not enough room to back it up on the working computer, format on the new, and reinstall it on newly formatted hdd.

Win 7 Sees External Usb Hard Disk But Can't Access It

I'm using windows 7 home premium and had a power supply go out causing my computer to shut down in the middle of moving some large files to a fantom 1 tb external usb hard disk. I've got the system back up and running (after repairing the boot disk that had a corrupt boot sector) but when i plug in the external disk, windows won't allow me to access files. It does recognize the drive when i plug it in but if i go to properties and try to look at drive details or do disk maintenance, it gives an error message saying it can't access the drive. Also, the external drive is not partitioned.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the fat or partition table that got messed up when the power went out. I ran the easeus data recovery wizard-it was able to access the drive just fine and tells me the data is still there.

Any thoughts?

Cannot Install Win 7 On Sata Hard Disk - Intel 945 Chipset Motherboard

I troubleshoot more than one pc with dual boot system which run windows xp and windows 7. Which system are most latest- intel g31 chipset, 2gb ram, 500 gb sata hdd, 2. 5 ghz intel dual core etc.
But, now i face some installation problem with my pc. Yesterday i run my pc smoothly with windows 7 with 2 ghz pentium 4, 1 gb ram, 80 gb pata hdd, 945 chipset motherboard etc. I need more storage area, so i purchase a hitachi 500 gb sata hdd. My motherboard has one pata connector and two sata connector. I use the pata connector to attach my hdd and dvd. They worked fine.

But, when i attach my new 500 gb sata hdd to sata connector and remove the 80 gb pata hdd. Only dvd attach with pata connector. I insert my windows 7 installtion dvd to the drive and restart my pc and go to bios. This is amibios. I find bios recognize the sata hdd as primary master and dvd to secondary slave drive. I also find sata drive mark in ide form. (Their also raid and ahci also available. ) I save the configuration and reboot. After reboot, when pc want to start from dvd, i press the space key from keyboard and the setup start to copy installation file in 2 stage and i find it complete the copy process. And pc going to start up, but, but a green color bar running through a tube for about 2 hours. Nothing happen. Read more at the forum.

Upgrade As Clean Install Using Upgrade Media Using One Hard Drive

I need help with planning my upgrade to windows 7 from windows xp pro. Can i do this upgrade as a clean install using upgrade media if i've only got one hard drive? I'm currently running 32-bit windows xp professional and want to upgrade to 64-bit windows 7 professional.

My laptop only has one hard drive on it, so installing "fresh" to a separate hd isn't possible. Since i already back up all my data to an external hd, i'd like to just format the internal hd and install windows 7 onto that. Will that be possible though using upgrade media? How does it verify my existing xp pro license?

How To Upgrade Hard Drive At Same Time I Upgrade To Win 7?

How should i upgrade my hard drive at the same time i upgrade to windows 7? I plan to upgrade my laptop from win xp pro to win 7 pro and want to at the same time upgrade my hard drive. I don't know what i should do to ensure that the win 7 install program recognizes the prior win xp installation.
Would it work to put the old (win xp) drive in an external enclosure connected via usb? Alternatively, what would i need to copy from the old hard drive to the new in order to have the win 7 install recognizes win xp?

Can I Use Upgrade Disk To Fix A Virus?

I have a lenovo ideapad that runs windows vista home premium. The laptop came with the operating system already installed, so i do not have a clean disk. I have a really bad virus that keeps me from looking at my indexes, doing a system restore or a virus scan with kapersky to do any type of repair. The virus keeps anything related to flash, java, windows media, activex, etc. From running. If i purchase and install an upgrade disk of either windows vista home premium or windows 7 would it fix the problem?  Or, do i need to wipe the entire system and start over with a clean disk? Is there some something that can be done if the operating system is on the computer when it's purchased?

Upgrade Disk No Longer Working

I had just purchased the new windows 7 home premium upgrade and had inserted the 32-bit disk and followed all the necessary instructions to get to the installation. I had heard that i was using the wrong disk and canceled the setup. I then restarted and inserted the 64-bit disk. I found that the disk did not work and so i inserted the 32-bit disk back into the drive and restarted my computer again. Now when i insert the 32-bit disk, the bootmaster will say that the disk is corrupt. How do i fix this problem?

Upgrade Or Clean Install Using Oem Disk

I am building pretty much a new system, just for myself. I will have new motherboard, new hard drives, new case, new psu, new video system (going sli). I currently have xp sp3 and i want to go to win 7. I bought an oem copy of win 7, but have not broken the seal, and won't unless i know i can use it. My question is: once all the hardware is together, my assumption is that in my oem package i will find a win 7 dvd from which i can straightforwardly install windows. Can i do this, or should i get a retail version?

I had a pc that came with a pre installed version of vista home 32 bit, however my hard drive has just totally failed, is there anyway that i'll be able to just get the upgrade version and install it on my new hard drive, or as i beleive to be the case, will i have to get the full version of windows 7. My pc didn't come with any sort of vista install disc.

As i said im fairly certain i know the answer and its that i get a new hard drive and will have to get the full version of 7 but just wanted to check with people who know far more on the subject than i do.

Help With Hard Drive Upgrade

My hard drive had only 37gb so i upgraded to a 320gb drive. I have cloned the old drive to the new drive. My problem is windows 7 shows the new drive size as 37gb. In the diskmanagementwhere it shows disk 0, disk 1, disk 2 i can see the correct drive size 320gb but the drive properties shows 37gb. When i select the right-mouse "format" menu the "extend volume" menu is grayed out. How can i make windows 7 remeasure the hard drive size so the full 320gb drive is available and the menu format->extend volume will work?

Moving Data From 1st Disk To 2nd Disk

I installed my w7 on a single disk pc then i added a second disk for data. I want to have all my data (documents, photos, music, etc. ) In this second disk. In xp, when i did so, i copy my documents from "documents and settings" folder to the new location (d:/) and i was done. Now in w7 i open the "user" folder i found that files are not on a single folder but that there are several document folders (images, documents, etc. ) And settings folders (favorites, etc. ). May i copy all the user folder to the new location or i must leave there some of them in c:/system/users? In xp, when i move my documents to d:, every thing was redirected there (default1 saving folder, default download folder, defautl music folder, etc. ) In w7, would happen the same? The link on the desktop will redirect me to the location or may continue pointing the old one.

Disk Read Error And Recovery Disk Not Working

I have a toshiba satellite c650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that i have read about on the internet. I have made a windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has windows 7 installed. When i use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why i am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

Upgrade To Win7 - Keep Xp Hard Drive As Is

I have xp, want to upgrade to w7. Would like to keep old xp hard drive as is (just in-case upgrade fails). I want to buy a new second hd and 'upgrade to that hd and making xp hard drive a "d:" drive and w7 the "c". I want to keep my xp hard drive as is and use it as a second hard drive. Don't want to have to move everything or do a dual boot.

I would like to buy a new hd, upgrade w7 on it and make it my new c: (boot) drive and make my old xp hd my d: (data)drive. This way, i could switch back to the old xp hd if w7 failed. Is there a way to do this easily or at all? I guess i could buy the new hd install xp on it, then do the w7 upgrade!

Upgrade To A New Empty Hard Drive

I have a pre order of windows 7 professional upgrade coming when released. I am getting my inspiron 8600 ready, 2 gb memory installed, and i have a new 160 gb hard drive to replace the 40 gb original drive. My plan was to install the new drive and install the upgrade using my original xp install disc from dell as a qualifier. It sounds like i cannot do this based on other threads. Can i install the dell original xp on the new hard drive (basic install) and go to the upgrade disk from there? I understand i will have to reinstall software and documents, etc. After.
