Win 7 64-bit App Installations Always Default To Program Files (x86)

I've just recently installed windows 7 64-bit. When i try installing 64-bit applications such as firefox namoroka or google picasa 64-bit the default is always to install in "program files (x86)". The default should be "program files" for 64-bit apps. Shouldn't windows detect that it's a 64-bit application and default the installation to "program files"?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Will I Need To Upgrade All Of My Existing Software To A 64-bit Version, If I Use 64 Bit Win 7 ?

I am ready to purchase a new desktop computer with windows 7, but i am a little confused about the 32 vs. 64 bit decision. I understand technically what the difference is, but i am not sure what the impact on my software will be. At present all i have is 32 bit software running on both my desktop and laptop, some of which is quite old but still needed and very functional. I can't afford to replace all of my software, some of which have no counterpart in 64 bit. My new laptop is running 32 bit vista (less than 1 year old). Will i need to upgrade all of my existing software to a 64 bit version if i get the 64 bit version of win 7 or will i be able to use my old software with the new os? I also plan to upgrade to a new version of office. What impact will that have if i go to a 64 bit version? What about compatibility with my laptop and the existing 32 bit office on it?

Windows 64-bit Keeps Trying To Run 32-bit Version Programs

Windows 64 bit version keeps trying to run a 32 bit version to run internet from different programs. I updated my sony laptop to windows 7 from vista. I had trouble connecting to the internet. I went to the search programs and files option from my start menu. I found the explorer 64 bit option and  clicked on it and the internet can right up.

I downloaded things like i-tunes and sony reader and when i go to places like the library that need to access the internet i get the no connection error. I also get messages that i am trying to run a 32 bit version of something that has a 64 bit cpu and an error code. I need to know how to change the defaut to run everything on the 64 bit version. I hope this makes since to someone. I am so confused and frustrated.

Redo Upgrade With 64-bit Version From 32-bit

I just recently upgraded from xp to windows 7 a couple of days ago. And i must say i love it however, because i was so excited about upgrading i actually put in the 32bit version disk. So my question would be can i redo my upgrade with the 64bit version disk. I'm assuming it would be a custom clean install and don't mind reinstalling certain programs ( it is well worth it ).

Convert 32-bit To 64-bit Version Using Same Upgrade

I am currently using xp on my desktop and want to convert to 64bit win7. However, my tax returns were done on this computer over the past several years and the 32bit tax software used to prepare these returns probably will not work on the 64bit os, if i install the 64bit version now i will lose access to my older tax data. Can i install win7 32bit version via a clean install with the upgrade version, now and later, convert this win7 os to the win7 64bit version using the same upgrade version?

Using Key From 64-bit Install For 32-bit Version On Same Pc

Want to use key from 64 bit install for clean install of 32 bit version on same pc. I recently purchased windows 7 ultimate which included the 64 and 32 bit versions. I installed the 64 bit version on my laptop and would like to go to the 32 bit version for compatibility issues with older programs. (I've grown a bit tired of working through the trouble shooting that comes with the 64 bit version) i would like to know if it is legal and possible to use the key from my 64 bit to use for doing a clean install of the 32 bit version on the same pc?

Win 7 X86 32-bit Only Recognises 3 Of 4 Gb Ram

Windows 7 x86 (32-bit) only recognizes 3 of my 4 gb ram. Should i upgrade to windows 7 x64 (64-bit)? I just upgraded to win 7 from vista (both x86) on my sony vaio vgn-280e which was shipped with vista home prem x86 and sony state that it is capable of 4gb ram. I have just upgraded from 3gb to the full 4. And of course only 3 usable according to system properties.

You all say that it's cos x86 oss aren't capable of 4gb ram but that's just not the case with everyone, i've read other forums where people have. And also where x64 users can't access all their 4gb, only 3 or 3. Xgb. I have run linux x86 on here, which uses the full 4, and have an os x leopard install which also detects and uses all 4gb. My bios detects all 4 too. Is there absolutely no way that i can get win 7 to use the full 4gb ddr2 (pc-2 5300 667) ram i have installed?

Further system spec:
Mobile intel 965 express chipset family
Core 2 duo 667mhz t5450 cpus
Intel gma x3100 video (total available graphics memory: 358mb - 64 system, 294 shared)

Also: if i upgrade to win 7 x64, and the full 4gb ram is utilized by the system, isn't the trade-off that an x64 os is more demanding on system resources including ram? Ie. Probably performance-wise i'm not any better off?

Extra question to you: how do i update bios? My bios is showing the full 4 actually, so is my os x install (and using it too). But win 7 x86 says 4 installed, using 3. How can i tell if that extra 1 is or isn't "wasted", ie is it going to graphics (c. 300mb in my case) etc?

Download Programs To Default Folder "program Files" 32-bit Or 64-bit

I have been confused if programs automatically download to the optimum "program files" for 32-bit or 64-bit or do i have to select which if the two program files i want it in? It seems everything has been going into the x86 file. I don't want to just move them all over to the 64-bit file if they really belong in the x86 file, but i am sure my new photoshop programs belong in the program files file yet they seen to have downloaded into the program files (x86) instead. Also, how am i to know which programs are better suited for either folder?

Update: i tried copying the photoshop file and moving it to the 64-bit folder but it won't let me do so, saying a file is in use somewhere. I do not have any files from this open; i even restarted the computer to completely close anything that might be open and i get the same message. Is this maybe because it does not belong in the program files folder for 64-bit programs? Any other hints on how i can move this program, along with adobe premiere elements (for making videos) that gives me the same message? I have been told these programs would work better running as 64-bit programs so that is why i want to move them.

Wrong Bit Version

I won a copy of windows 7 ultimate at a microsoft hosted seminar. When i opened it at home to install, i discovered that there was only a 64 bit version disc in the package. Since i have a dell 32 bit laptop running vista home premium, i cannot use the disc that i won. Is it possible for me to somehow exchange this unused disc for the correct version? I could provide you with the product code which has not been registered or used.

If exchanging the physical media discs is not practical, could you exchange the code to allow me to do an online upgrade path to any edition of windows 7? I don't need ultimate and would be happy with the standard home edition. I was told by a friend that this activation code inside the package would not work if i simply did an online up grade to 7.

3. Select the ˜boot tab.

Win 7 64-bit Doesn't Distinguish Between Ie8 64-bit And Ie8 32-bit

Windows 7 64bit doesn't distinguish between ie8 64 bit and ie8 32 bit when attempting to set a default browser using the control panel default programs 'associate' utility. My new windows 7 64 bit pc (luv that i7 920 intel cpu) came installed with both ie8-64 bit and ie8-32 bit (nothing more need be said regarding the absurdity of having to deal with this in the first place - i should have gone with the imac).

Anyway, ie64 bit lacks the flash player cuz adobe hasn't released a 64 bit version yet, per their website. So i can't use ie64 with xm online music stream (et al). Ie32, on the other hand, supports flash player, but won't successfully link to various embedded hypertext links, such as those embedded in an email. My initial solution was to use firefox, which served me well until an application from a local vendor will only work with internet explorer. Sigh.

I've used windows since version 2 back in the 1980s, have become stoic, and can emotionally cope with having to use 3 browsers to get the job done.

However, just for fun, my current burning question is, with two different versions of ie8 (64 bit and 32 bit) installed into windows 7, why doesn't the control panel default applications utility seem to aware of the fact that there are indeed two different versions installed? It lists firefox and internet explorer, but does not differentiate between the two flavors of ie. My goal was to set ie8 64 bit as the default browser temporarily to accommodate the vendor's application.

Fyi, by setting the default, i refer to: control panel | default programs | associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scroll down to 'http' and click on the change program button. So in my case, firefox and only one instance of internet explorer, with no bit distinction, display as selection options.

Xp Mode Is 64-bit Or 32-bit In Win 7 64-bit

I am planning on purchasing win 7 pro & installing the 64-bit version. I intend to make use of the "xp mode" feature if i can install 32-bit printer drivers within the xp mode, as my photo printers have no 64-bit drivers. I currently edit my photography on a win xp pro 64-bit pc, which is networked to a win xp pro 32-bitpc in order to print images. I need to know if "xp mode" is 32-bit - even when installed with the 64-bit version of win 7 pro. I want to be able to convert/edit my photos in win 7 64-bit, then print these images using "xp mode" via the 32-bit driversi intend to installin xp mode- all from the same pc. Is this do-able?

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

Ati Radeon Sapphire 5770 - Win 7 64-bit Asks For 32-bit Drivers

I have windows 7 64 bit. I recently changed my video card for an ati radeon sapphire 5770. I had an nvidia before that stopped working. I installed the lastest drivers from ati for win7 64 bit (version 10. 5) after uninstalling those from nvidia. Everything seems to be working fine, but windows keep telling me that there's no drivers installed for my card, even tho i can access the catalyst control center. When i click on the link that windows provide, it always lead to the 32 bit version of win 7. Is it a known problem? Is there something i can do to correct that?

Multi-boot System Win 7 64-bit & Vista 32-bit On One Hard Drive

Multi-boot system windows 7 (64-bit) & vista (32-bit) on one hard drive - do i need two hard drives?I have an existing windows vista ultimate (32-bit) system installed on a 500gb sata hard drive, partitioned into 2 partitions (c: and d:). I would like to make the system multi-boot so that i can back-track to vista if i have a problem with win7.

One issue here is that i plan on multi-booting vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit on the same hard drive without touching the d: partition of the hard drive. I don't know if this is possible, but i'm interested to see if it is.

I've done some research and have found that win7 has many compatibility modes, so maybe i don't need to worry about keeping an installation of vista on my system? I just don't want to be "caught with my pants down" if something were to go wrong with win7, like if one of my programs was incompatible or something along those lines.

If i can't multi-boot vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit from the same hard drive, can i do it with 2 hard drives having one os on each hard drive? Or, am i being much too paranoid about this and should i trust microsoft on this one that win7 will not have any large compatibility issues with my most used programs?

For reference, here are some of my most used programs: firefox 3. 5, steam, adobe photoshop (versions 7. 0 and cs3), ie tester (for web development), winamp, trillian (an im and irc program), itunes, skype, mozilla thunderbird (for e-mail), and fraps (in-game video recording software).

I know that this is a lot all at once, but does anyone see any foreseen compatibility issues with any of these programs and win7 64-bit ? I'm also worried about the compatibility of some of my drivers with win7 64-bit, but i've heard that there have been leaps and bounds made with driver compatibility on win7 64-bit (as compared to the mess it was with xp 64-bit). Is this true?

Printer Sharing - 64-bit Win 7 And 32-bit Xp In Remote Desktop Session

Printer sharing - 64 bit windows 7 and 32 bit windows xp in a remote desktop session. Windows 7 machine with a local ricoh / aficio 1045 b & w multifunction printer attached. Works fine, uses 64 bit printer driver. This computer connects to a windows xp machine (32 bit) using remote desktop session (terminal services).

On the xp machine, i installed the 64 bit printer driver via printers and faxes -> server properties - drivers - add driver. I can see the driver there, successfully installed (have rebooted, etc). Despite this, the printer will still not show up when rd session is run. In event viewer, i can see there's an issue with it finding the correct driver.

I've used the terminal server printer redirection tool in the past to solve these problems (tspdrw.exe) which works great. The correct 64 bit driver is not listed as a choice when scrolling through options to reassign the driver. Hopefully that is clear, not sure what i am missing.

Xps m1210 with vista 32 bit- will the drivers for vista 32 bit work for windows 7 32 bit? Can anyone tell me with certainty if the drivers will or wont work for windows 7?
