Enlarge C: Drive

Installed 7 did not realize that it left drive partitioned. C drive is almost full. F drive is empty. Tried to expand c-not allowed in disk management but can shrink f(empty drive) by 87. 5 gig. If i shrink f will it go into c (main drive) and not erase anything on it? Or can i safely delete the partition which is really not needed? Tell me best way to go. A computer geek at best buy told me to try to delete partition by formatting? Or do i need to use diskpart in command prompt? The example that the windows 7 inside book shows the expansion of a drive screen but i don't get that same picture.

Sites such as ebay - the 'enlarge picture' will not work on ie7 but does on ie8. Seems i can't have flash player and working hyper-links together.

Cd/dvd Drive Stopped Working - Drive Cannot Start Code 10

The drive did not respond in a fixed time to the access attempt 1100:012a, 1100:022a, 1100:032a, 1100:042a. My cd/dvd drive stopped working. When i attempt to reinstall the driver, it fails. On the drive properties, i see "drive cannot start code 10". I have replaced the drive, and the sata data cable, and still have exactly the same problem. I have run the psa test and it revealed the error code listed int he title of this message.

Win 7 Fails To Assign A Drive Letter To A Usb Drive

Windows 7 fails to assign a drive letter to a usb drive (in this case an olympus ls-10 recorder). I have a plug and play ls-10 recorder. It works fine on all of my xp systems. When i plug it into my windows 7 64 bit system, "nothing" happens. Upon further investigation, the disk manager sees the drives (there are 2), but no letter is assigned. I tried assigning, but i keep getting a message that asks me to refresh, restart or reboot, none of which works. I have tries to uninstall and install the devices - same result. I tried to assign the drive letters in command mode, but i get a "no volume" error. Ny suggestions?

Bootable Flash Drive Or Hard Drive To Install Win 7

estimating windows 7 wim file sizes - ufd too small for image. I was trying to capture awim file for windows 7 to a bootable ufd, but the 16gb ufd was too small. I reran and directed the capture to a usb hard drive. Is there a tool to estimate the ufd size required? Is the fat32 format a constraint? Can i build a bootable usb hard drive and capture the image to it so that if i boot from the usb hd instead of the ufd? Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.

Can't Eject Usb Hard Drive, Drive Always In Use

I have a 500gb maxtor onetouch 4 external usb backup drive that is set to do weekly backups with windows backup. This works great except that everything and their grandmother wants to spin the hard drive up whenever possible. This is not an ideal situation: with exception to backup, this drive is not used for anything. So i had a great idea, i'll keep the drive unmounted until i need to backup which then a newly created scheduled task would mount, backup and unmount when done! Well, turns out, windows doesn't think so. And this makes me a sad panda.

Win 7 Recognize Flash Drive As Disk Drive

Windows 7 will not recognize flash drive, sees it as disk drive. How do i get win 7 to recognize my flash drive for what it is and allow me to use it? Whenever i try to open it in my computer it tells me there is no disc in the drive. Disk manager list it as a usb drive. Win 7 says flash drive is a disk drive in my computer. Device manager lists it as a usb flash drive but lists it under disk drive.

I Get Drive Full Error When The Drive Is 90% Unused

Reported used space on drive c continues to climb, but no data is actually added; ultimately i get drive full error when the drive is 90% unused. I recently upgraded to windows 7 from vista home premium (64 bit each). Other than that, i don't believe there has been any hardware or software changes in months. My c drive (sata ii, ntfs format) has a capacity of 500 gb, although i don t have more than 60 gb of material on it, which is the amount reported on bootup.

However, after some usage, the hard drive "appears" to be adding data at the rate of 50 gb an hour, as if some video is being recorded to the hard drive, which it is not. In fact, if i disconnect from the internet, the reported disk usage still continues to climb. Within a day, i get a disk full error and i cannot save anything. In other words, if i right click on the drive c icon after booup, then click properties, i see that the drive will be 60 gb used, or a11% of so, but an hour later it will report drive use at 20%, or 100 gb, and an hour after that it's showing 150 gb of hard drive use, etc.

If i re-boot and then check the hard drive usage again, properties will report only the actual 60 or so gb of use, but an hour later, i'm back up to 100 gb and so on until disk full appears again and i can't save a simple word document. Ideas on what is causing this?

The o/s will remain on the "c" drive, however.

Secondary Drive Or Any Usb Drive Is Not Accessible

After installing windows seven on my primary drive (followed the installation procedures for 7 on 32 bit xp pro) all works fine except my secondary drive or any usb drive is not accessible.get error message they are not available. They are in the setup bios and in devices, but in my computer if i left click i get the error message.

However my secondary disk is a sata 500 gig drive. Windows 7 will recognize dvd/cd drive but only the "c' drive (of hard drives)> i have tried usb drives in addition to the sata but it does not read them, only tells me they are not accessible. The one exception was the windows easy transfer data sent to a usb disk made prior to loading windows 7.

Remove Boot Drive When Win7 Is On Different Drive

I want to change out a drive, "f", but some how the windows boot manager is listed here on the drive i want to change. I tried swapping this drive, "f" but i cannot boot into win7 on "h". If i just remove the earlier version of windows xp using bcdedit(easybcd) would this work, i'd hate to do this and not be able to boot to anything. The output from bcdedit and easybcd is listed at the end of this posting.

As an added note you'll see that my win7 boot drive is listed as "h", i've no idea how this happened so how would i go about changing this back to "c" and whats the implications, i know i may have to reinstall some apps but anything else?

Matching Drive Letter With Physical Drive

I know there must be a simple way of doing this. I have 5 sata drives on my windows 7 system. The boot drive (c:) and another drive (e:) are 150 gb wd raptors. The two raptors are connected to the mobo's sata1 and sata4. But how can i tell whether the c: drive is on either sata1 or sata4? All in can see in the device manager is the drive s/ns. In disk management, all i can see are the drive letters and the drive type, but not the s/n. I know that i could power down, unplug one of the drives from the mobo and see what happens when i reboot, but i was wondering if there was some way to find out from the os.

The only other way i decided that it might be possible to find out is to use the bios to examine the s/ns and try booting from each drive using the bios and see what happens.

Replacing A Slow C Drive With A Ssd Drive

I am considering purchasing a ssd and would like to replace my existing c drive with this ssd. I want to move my current install of windows 7 to the new drive. I have an upgrade license for windows 7 and performed a clean install as i upgraded from vista 32 to windows 7 64-bit.

Is there a relatively easy way to do this? I would like to end up with the ssd as my c drive and my old drive as a different drive letter. If need be i don't mind re-installing windows 7 but i wouldn't want to have to install vista 32 first.

Installation On A Non C: Drive, Still Shows On C: Drive

I have tried various methods and can change the drive letter designation of my various drives under w7p(64) but seemingly one cannot (easily) change the drive letter that the os operates under. (Why w7 feels it has to be on the c: drive eludes me!) My hdd was previously set up under xp with a c: for utility stuff, d: as the wxpp-os and i was trying to install w7p onto the e: partition. (A 1. 5 tb drive, so each partition has plenty of space. )

After rebooting, w7p displays that it had the c: drive, wxpp had the d: drive, and my utility partition had no drive letter designation at all. Rebooting to xpp showed the proper drive designations. As i mentioned first, i can use the "disk management" feature to change all the drive letters around other than for the w7 os drive. Xp has no problems with my setup, and i have even managed to get vista to accept residing on a non c: drive previously.

Any hints as to if or how i can get w7p to accept being called out on the e: drive? (Which is where it is/was installed after all, i just want it to wear its proper name tag. ) It's very confusing to dual boot the system and not have the drive letters be consistent. If w7 is using some sort of remapping to allow more varied handling of the drive resources, why can't it allow me to continue handling them the way i've been handling them for the past 20 years?

Primary Drive Is Marked As Drive 0

I built a new system w/ win 7 pro 64 and two 10, 000 rpm raptor sata drives set up as a raid 0 array (c: drive). Everything was up and running before i put my old 240 gb ata133 ide drive (old c: now d:) in to see what utility and programs i could use. Afterwards sys info and active disk manage reports my raid array as disk:1 and the ide as disk:0. Why? And does it matter? And 2nd ?. Is there any way to remove the old boot partition on the ide from the list of drives to image w/ sys image? I can understand the c: part (raid array) and the "system reserved" but i don't want to image the d: part (1st part on old 95 drive).

How To Format C Drive And Save On D Drive?

So had vista on c drive and used d drive to store. Did clean install of windows 7 on d drive. However, c drive still has about 18 gb of stuff that i'm pretty sure dealt with vista and it won't let me format c drive even though i am logged in as administrator. Found most of the workaround by changing owner of folders from trusted installer yada yada.

Found the way to show hidden folders. Right now have everything deleted except $recycle. Bin boot and system volume information. All i want to do is clean format c since windows 7 is on d drive and free up all the space on c. Everytime i try i get same message "windows was unable to complete format".

Also, even though i've changed permission on d drive i am not able to save even simple notepad docs to d drive. Have to save to a folder. Any ideas on how to change this?

C: Drive Backups Larger Than C: Drive, Why?

My c: drive has 519gb on it, but the total backup space usage is 732gb (system image is 396gb; file backup is 265gb; other files 71gb). I frequently need to delete backups to make room for new backups. I never delete the system image. I let windows manage the space used for backup history. I have had space issues since using the windows 7 backup utility, well prior to accumulating 519gb on my system. My 1tb external drive is partitioned to 750 dedicated for backups. Why do i use more space than what's on my system, and how do i fix this problem? What are the benefits/drawbacks to keeping the system image and dumping backups, and vice versa?

Dual Boot - Can't See Win 7 Drive After Removing Other Boot Drive

My mobo (msi p7n diamond 780i sli / 570i sli) has a sata raid controller providing 6 sata interfaces
These are organized thus.

Sata 1 - [partition 1 - windows xp] [partition 2 - windows 7 beta (64bit)]
Sata 2 - ocz vertex - windows 7 home (64bit) retail version
Sata 3 - mirror a
Sata 4 - mirror b
Sata 5 - mirror a
Sata 6 - mirror b

The system was originally running xp on sata 1. I added a partition to sata 1 and installed windows 7 beta some weeks ago. The system dual booted to xp or win 7 beta fine. I then added the ocz vertex drive and installed the win 7 retail version, and i am able to dual boot to all three systems just fine.

However - i really want to do away with the xp and win 7 beta partitions and just run with the ocz drive. However if i disconnect the drive from sata 1 the system will not boot up. Can't find ntldr or bootmgr or something similar. I have changed the boot sequence in the bios to point at just the ocz drive - but it just won't boot from it.

Upgrading Existing Hard Drive To Ssd Hard Drive

I have recently purchased a laptop with one hard drive slot. I want to change the existing hard drive slot to a ssd. My laptop came with windows 7 pro pre-installed (no disk supplied). When i purchased the machine i created the windows recovery disk.

I would like to know if the upgrade is as simple as:

1) removing the current 500g hard drive
2) installing the new new ssd
3) running the recovery disks to re-install my copy of windows 7 pro or am i missing something?

Upgrade On New Hard Drive Because Of Failed Hard Drive

Anyway to upgrade on a new hard drive because of a failed hard drive with vista on it? I had a pc that came with a pre installed version of vista home 32 bit, however my hard drive has just totally failed, is there anyway that i'll be able to just get the upgrade version and install it on my new hard drive, or as i beleive to be the case, will i have to get the full version of windows 7. My pc didn't come with any sort of vista install disc.

As i said im fairly certain i know the answer and its that i get a new hard drive and will have to get the full version of 7 but just wanted to check with people who know far more on the subject than i do.

Copy Raid Drive To Another Raid Drive

I've been running 2 seagate barracuda 500 gig hdd in raid1. I recently purchased 2 wd cavier green 2tb hdd that i want to run in raid5. I have backed up all my information from my existing drive to my external and create the back up boot cd. When i go to restore the information to the new raid array i get a error message (think it was 0x80042414). I tried then to just reinstall windows 7. Problem 2 happens. It will see the 3. 6tb hdd and will partition only 2tb of the disk space even though it was specified for 3. 6tb. Even still with the 2tb drive the install fails (don't have the error code).
How can i get the drive copied to my new array?

Why Is C Drive Being Used Up?

I was telling a friend yesterday how great windows 7 is. Now i am not so sure. As i open and close programs, use ie8 to go to websites, or use explorer on my computer, the available space on c drive is slowly used up. I have removed (uninstalled) everything i installed after doing a clean install of windows 7 ultimate. I have checked the drives for errors - none. I ran the windows memory diagnostic tool and found no problems.

The only way to get back the free space is to reboot. It usually happens without my help because the system crashes just after telling me i am out of memory. Bios is not changeable. C drive is 40 gb with 13. 5gb used for programs. As i type the available free space on c goes down, and down, .
This just started today. No viruses, no worms, nothing that i can find and nothing that windows can find. I cannot find any where on my computer where i can reset shadowing, etc. If it is in the bios, it doesn't show up or is not accessible.

I do run my computer in admin mood. I have a partition that is 410gb and has nothing on it but i cannot extend c. Had visual web developer, etc on c but i uninstalled it. Why is the free space being used up to the point that the computer crashes? About to crash now.

Lost Drive

I have an hdd box which contains a hard disk (formated in 3 partitions) . When i used windows xp before, i can view my file in all of the partitions. But when i install windows 7, only one partition of my hdd box can be accessed . Nd the others can't. I tried to make them show but they can't. I used "disk management" and i can see the missing drive but nothing can do with them (except delete them of course). And when i bring it to my computer which is using windows xp , the first time i can still accessed all the data in the partitions but when i tried on win 7 i still can't. And the second time i tried on win xp it' missing two drive just like win 7. I know that the drive doesn't have viruses 'cuz i scan viruses almost everyday .
