Computer Hangs On Shut Down And Lockout

I'm running windows 7 ultimate x64 upgraded from windows xp pro 32x on a dell precision 490 (2 xeon dual cores 5130 2ghz, 4gigs ecc ram, radeon 4850 vc, sb x-fi xtreme audio sc). My problem is that windows 7 sometimes (not always) hangs when i attempt to shut down. It goes through the shutdown to the point where it displays just the background and then nothing happens. The only thing that can be done from this screen is a hard boot. A similar problem occurs, occasionally, when trying to lock out the pc (win + l). It sometimes fails completely (and at that point ctrl+alt+del no longer responds either) or other times it'll lock out and then not let me back in displaying the same screen as when the computer hangs during shut down.

I've attempted chkdsk and run numerous virus and malware scans (avg, malwarebytes, adaware, trendmicro etc) with no errors or issues detected. None of the software/processes i'm currently running are particularly contentious and the problem never seems to occur regularly while using one program in particular. Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Shut Down Computer From Login Screen

I have my windows 7 systems set up with user account passwords. I sometimes accidentally bump my keyboard and wake my computer up from sleep mode, taking it to the login screen where it waits for a password. How do you shut the computer off or put it back to sleep from the login screen? There isn't a button or anything. Does windows not let you shut the computer off until you log in? It's a completely unnecessary hassle to have to log in to put the computer back to sleep, not to mention if someone else in my family accidentally woke the computer up they wouldn't be able to put it back to sleep at all.

Random Shut Down / Computer Randomly Shutting Down

I have a sony vaio vgn-cs190j. I upgraded to windows 7 professional 64bit about 4 months ago and am now having issues with my computer randomly shutting down. It will instantly freeze up for like a second and just shut off to immediate power off. There is no bsod or a restart. It just instantly shuts down. It has happened while doing flash applets, surfing the web, and playing games on my computer. It even happened one time while i was on microsoft word. There is also the occasional occurrence where the computer will shut down immediately shutdown before or during start up.
Does anyone know how to fix this or if there is a known problem of this happening?

Password Lockout

I have just set up my new toshiba satellite l450d-11v 15. 6 purchased this morning. I set the password on set up and re-entered it and it was accepted. I later turned off the power and when i turned it on again it asked for password and accepted it fine. I decided i did not really need a password and went to control panel to remove it. It is telling me that the password is incorrect, i have tried several times and still will not let me remove it and now after switching it off it will not let back in to windows.

I know that what i am typing is correct. Surely i could not have made an error in the spelling then done the same thing on the re-enter and the next log in. I have a recovery disk with the laptop. I wondered if i should use it.

Win 7 Hangs

I have been using windows 7 rc1 for a while now and it's been very stable until last week. I had not made any changes to software or hardware. I was watching a dvd as i normally would and the computer just froze. There was no response from the keyboard or the mouse and no error message. I rebooted and went to the event log and found no error message generated. So i tried again to finish my dvd and after a few minutes it locked again. I then rebooted and tried the built in dvd player in windows media center. It had a terrible lag so that was no option.

After that i tried another dvd software that i had installed but never used and again the computer freezes. Something else i've noticed but just been dealing with is that any audio or video that i watch or listen to will jitter every so often with some static sound. It happens in any program i use to listen to audio or watch video. Don't know if that's related but has anyone else had any similar problems with system hangs and no related error message to trace the problem?  Btw, i had to dig out my previous drive with vista installed and put that back in the computer to continue my normal pc use.

Win 7 Hangs Up

I upgraded from xp to win7, got everything running smoothly and then a week later upgraded the motherboard, processor and memory. Then the problems started. I have updated every driver known to man and all looks well in the device manager. However after a smooth boot the os hangs up sometimes 10 minutes later sometimes 1 minute after boot with no activity at all. At times i can go to the internet for a few minutes and browse at times it hangs immediately.

I am running with a selective startup with only necessary services running. Makes no difference. I can view the event log and get a " the computer browser service depends on the server service which failed to start because of the following error: the dependency service or group failed to start. " But i am not sure if that is the cause or the result. Safe mode works ok.

Upgrade Reaches 60% And Hangs

Windows 7 upgrade reaches 60% and hangs at "transferring files, settings, and programs. " I am upgrading from vista home premium to windows 7 home premium but it keeps hanging at 60% - right where it is transferring files. The upgrade can go back to vista but the problem keeps happening every time i attempt the upgrade.

File Deletion Hangs

I've been having problems with my norton ghost backups, which hang at the very end of the backups, preventing their completion. But now, i think it's not a ghost problem: frequently when i delete a set of files using windows explorer, it's hanging at the end as well. This makes me think it's a deeper problem within the windows file system software. To be explicit, within windows explorer i select a set of files and then right mouse click and delete.

A dialog comes up to track the deletions, file by file. The deletion takes place (they are removed from the display of files), yet the dialog remains - and it will remain indefinitely. I'm suspecting that this failure to cleanly complete simple file operations is related to my hangs in ghost backups.

Win 7 Hangs After Update

I have the same problem - safe mode, no problem, clean boot won't give you any help - i have already been down this road - this seems to be an issue with the last updates from ms - you will probably also experience loss of usb ports once the device that occupies the port is disconnected.
I have experienced the same problem on two (2) identical machines (hp pavilion dv7, i7, w7 home premium, 6gb ram, 640gb hd, nvidia geforce) - the problem was so annoying, especially the usb problem, that i reinstalled the os and all the programs only to encounter the problem again.

I returned the machine and exchanged it for the same machine - and now the same problems again.
This is a ms problem - clean boot won't tell you anything - just have to wait for ms to realize the problem and issue a patch.

Update Dialog Hangs Up

Yesterday in the middle of the working day my computer restarted and i lost one program i was working on (i already re-coded again). I'm thinking it might be automatic windows update. So, after that i was trying to bring this dialog and adjust my settings to install updates manually.

However, every time i try to bring this dialog and do something, it hangs and i have to kill it using task manager. Do you know what should i do? Could it be some virus instead? I'm using ms essentials as my antivirus program. Recently i ran a manual scan and it found 3 trojan (removed). I'm not sure how did they get there in the first place. Anyway, do you know what should i do in this situation?

Print Spooler Hangs

I have 2 laptops, upgraded old one to win 7, new one came with it installed. Using several different printers, from time to time the spooler will freeze up. My only solution so far has been to open services, and stop the spooler, i then have to reboot to clear the problem. Then things work fine for a while then it hangs up again. Either laptop, any printer, direct or networked. Doesn't matter which combo i use so i can only conclude the problem lies with win 7.

Update At Shutdown Hangs Up

Os: win 7 home premium 64 bit oem installed on zt 1. 5t desktop
Service pack level:  do not know. Machine is 2 weeks old and have seen 3-5 successful updates at shutdown time.

Few weeks ago bought a quad-core zt machine that came with win 7 home premium 64 bit os and a 1. 5t hd. Have been very happy with the unit, and have seen some 3 or 4 updates at shutdown with the usual banner "please do not power off or unplug your computer; installing update 1 of x. "  So, would happily head to bed and could hear the unit shut down in five minutes or so.

Not so last evening (fri, feb 26). Saw the update screen at 11 pm, and still there as of 10 am this morning. Yes, can see some sporadic hard disk activity, and the spinning cursor.

Any idea what may be happening, and more importantly how can i break out of the update, bring to a place where i can continue my work?

Btw, have two other win 7 systems that did not have the update last evening: a netbook running home premium 32bit, and a dell desktop running win 7 ultimate. All three are on a home win 7 network.

Update Hangs When Enabled

My computer started out as a vista machine. When i got my free upgrade to windows 7 64bit i started to have a hange problem with in minutes of boot up. I traced the problem to only happen when the computer has internet access. I further traced the problem to windows update as when this is disabled the computer no longer hangs. With update disabled i am not able to check for or download any updates from the microsoft site. How can i figure out what is wrong or what do i need to do next to fix this?

Agp440 Hangs During Boot

I recently rebuilt my pc and installed windows 7. Things seemed to be working ok with my old nvidia graphics card but it was only 128mb and i wanted to upgrade. I replaced it with an ati radeon 1gb agp card and now it hangs when booting agp440.sys. It'll sit there for about 25 minutes and then complete booting. Is there anyway of disabling this file from booting? Seems it was a big issue for xp and people could disable it in services, but its not listed in windows 7. Pentium 4 prescott 3. 2 ghz; 3gb ddr pc3200; asus p4c800-e deluxe, hsi radeon hd4650 1gb ddr3

Win 7 Hangs Randomly

Finally got a clean custom install of win 7 ultimate to a formatted partition h: on drive 0. Dual boot with working windows vista on the c: drive. Windows 7 boots and occasionally works for a period of time, accesses the internet fine, allows me to install a program, sometimes read email, but randomly freezes with a strange screen display, vertical lines over the existing display.

Eventually the screen becomes completely blurred with odd patterns and remains that way until i reboot. There is no single program that fails consistently. Word processor, and ie fail at different times. Noticed several times it occurred when entering data like password etc. , But at times it fails with a mouse cursor movement. When i boot to windows vista, thankfully it works flawlessly without failures so i can actually accomplish my work. Hoping for some help with this the win7 freeze problem.

Programs Not Responding, System Hangs

Windows 7 x64 random errors, including programs not responding, system hangs, system not shutting down, programs not starting. I'm so frustrated right now regarding all these issues. I had installed win7 64bit clean install a few months ago and everything worked fine till a few days ago, then all of a sudden my programs stooped responding, didn't start, couldn't shut down different programs, including media player, and even wouldn't shut down with ctrl+alt+del.

I got so frustrated that i reformatted my drives and did a clean install od win7 again (multiple times over the last 2 days now). The installation seems to go fine and i install my programs (office, alcohol 120, winrar, firefox, drivers for graphics and sound), and windows update, and hook up my external drives, speakers and printer. After that windows starts acting up, programs will open but not respond, won't shut down, explorer will crash and not restart, if i try to shut down the non-responsive programs (including my computer), they will not shut down and instead explorer will shut down.

My computer will open but take forever to load and right clicking anything will cause the system to hang. I have to restart in order to make anything shut down, and on shutdown, the system just hangs on the shutdown screen, forcing me to shutdown with the power button. I've tried system restore to restore to before i installed any programmes, but the problem persists. It gets so bad that i am unable to do anything at all (surprisingly the browser always works), and i've done a clean install 5-6 times already with the same problems.

Kb980182 Problem - Hangs On Reboot

Problem description: there is a new update that requires me to download an important update on internet explorer 8 just recently. The download is successful but the only problem is that the next time i turn on my computer, the computer hangs at the loading of the windows loading bar and i will have to restore back to before the update. This happens a everything that update is installed, and everytime i update the same thing, its hangs again.

It doesn't hang at the loading bar in windows vista after a boot if the update is not installed. The update is cumulative security update for internet explorer 8 for windows vista (kb980182)
Operating system: windows vista home premium service pack 2 32-bit operating system.

But what i ever i tried even change system boot services at msconfig and off debug at cmd, but none works. Can anyone help me? It's very annoying, i couldn't play any game.

Win 7 Hangs Up / Freezes Randomly

I just bought a dell studio 1749 with windows 7 64 bit. Randomly a program will lock up. After about 30 seconds or so the program will say it is not responding. If i right click on the program the whole program will turn a transparent white. This happens with many programs including ie, firefox, and windows explorer. I contacted dell and they did some simple maintenance but that didn't fix anything. I re-installed windows 2 times but it still didn't fix the problem. After all of this dell sent a technician to swap out hard drives. That still didn't fix the problem. It seems that if i have the battery plan on performance it helps but doesn't solve the problem.

Random System Hangs / Freezes

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure this one out. I am currently running windows 7 x64. At any given moment, the system will hang. Sometimes the system will go days without any issues, sometimes it will hang several times during one day. First the screen will freeze and all open programs become unresponsive, the mouse will continue to move around the screen as normal for about thirty seconds, but this time varies.

If i am watching a video or playing music, the audio will continue without interruption for several minutes, but this time will also vary. The caps lock, scroll lock, and num lock lights will continue to work also, meaning if i press any of the affor mentioned buttons, the light turns on/off like normal. The mouse, keyboard lights, and sound usually continue to work until i click the mouse buttons several times, at which point the system becomes entirely unresponsive.

My first instinct was driver issues. Noticing that the screen froze first, i assumed that the vpu was crashing and failing to recover. After several driver updates and much online research to this end, nothing had changed. I then turned my attention to drivers in general, updating all that i could, this again yielded no results. I then updated my bios and had no luck. Assuming it was not a driver issue, i examined my hardware. I thoroughly tested my hard drives, ram, and monitored loads and temperature on the cpu, vpu, and chipset.

I could not see any trends, the freezes appear to be at complete random. I do have an early amd phenom 9600 with the tlb erratum. I have tried enabling and disabling the patch in the bios
With no change. At this point i do not know what else to check. This is my most powerful pc at the moment, and i have reverted back to xp pro x86. I really like 7 over xp, but the instability in 7 makes it difficult to use for fear of data loss. Xp has no stability issues running on this same system. I have four other pc's which also have windows 7, none of them have had any issues. Some are 64-bit, some are 32-bit, all are stable.

My system specs are below: this is with the system at idle.

Motherboard: gigabyte ma790fx-ds5 motherboard - amd 790fx, socket am2+, atx, audio, pci express 2. 0, crossfirex ready, gigabit lan, s/pdif, usb 2. 0, firewire, serial ata, raid

Logging Off Hangs / Logoff Issue

I have upgraded my dell e1505 laptop from vista to windows 7 home premium. Everything seems to work except when i try to shut down the system, when the system reaches logging off state, it remains in that state indefinitely. At this time i have to force down shutdown by pushing the laptop on/off button. In the next bring up, the windows complains that the system did not shutdown properly.

I have turned off all start-up program (from msconfig) and problem is still there. I have created a new user with a new profile, and the same thing applies. The shutdown works only if i start up the system in safe mode, and the shut down. Otherwise, the logging off message hangs. Any idea?

Remote Desktop Hangs On Logoff

When trying to logoff from a remote desktop session to any host (vista, 2008 server, 2003 server, xp), the remote desktop window hangs - the rdp window stays open and the screen is stuck at the 'logging off' message or a blank black window is displayed. You have to end task the session in task manager to close the window.

Yes, my rdp session does log me out. We've seen this behavior on both windows 7 and vista (both are x64). The av version we're using is sep mr5. We have local admin rights on our workstations. Windows firewall is enabled. Ll windows updates are up-to-date. Disabling and re-enabling 3rd party startup items didn't solve it. Also, these are on lenovo thinkpad notebooks.

Windows Will Not Shut Down

Since installing all my drivers and programs on ultimate 64 windows will not shut down. If i try to restart or shut down it just sits there on the logging off screen forever. There is occasional disk activity. I've tried safe mode and windows shuts down perfectly fine. So i can only assume its a driver of some system setting causing the problem, all the drivers are the latest and are also used on a dual boot vista system.

Pc Will Not Shut Down Completely

I have setup a dual boot system, xp & 7, on two separate hard drives. Everything was working fine for a couple of weeks. I am not sure what suddenly caused the problem but windows 7 will no longer shut down completely on its own. It spins at the shutting down screen. I have to hold to power button in to get the computer to shut down. I have tried restoring the computer to an earlier version without success. I have closed the anti-virus program and all other programs. I have also stopped unnecessary processes. It still will not shut down automatically. Windows xp still runs fine and shut down completely on its own.

Pc Will Not Sleep Or Shut Down

My computer will not shut down or sleep, i am running windows 7 64-bit on an hp pavillion slimline. When i click either of these options it tells me it is going to sleep or shutting down, but the actual computer never does. It stays on the shutting down screen with the circled icon constantly spinning. Eventually it just cuts out like after some time, ill say about 5-10 mins, then restarts saying there was an issue shutting down. So for the past couple of days i been trying to fix this problem and it seems i cant do it on my own.

System Restore Hangs - Updates Never Complete

System restore hangs forever, windows updates never complete & installation of new programs freeze. After a scheduled windows vista update, automatic updates stopped working, among several other things: in manual mode, the progress bar freezes at 0% of the first update and never shows progress.

When i try to shutdown the pc (hp pavilion s3241la slimline desktop), the same story: automatic updates begin the installation, but with no progress, and at the end, i have to power off the pc the hard way.

In control panel->system->system protection i can't see any system restore points, the system keeps "searching" forever for those points but never displays any, and the hdd shows no activity; the "system restore. " Console isn't available too, it's button is greyed out.

Any program i try to install or upgrade never completes, installations just hang. How can i solve this?, The system is a production unit & it's not easy to stop all activities to perform a re-installation from scratch.
