Usb Takes Long Time To Eject

I upgraded to windows 7 over thanksgiving with no problems. However, recently i discovered that when i clicked on the "safely eject" icon on the taskbar to eject my usb drive, it takes over 1 min for the menu to pop up. I restarted my computer in safe mode and tried ejecting my usb, which worked fine with no lag. I don't know what happened that suddenly made ejecting so slow now. I haven't installed any new software since i upgraded, and this is definitely a recent issue. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Usb Drive Takes Long Time When Sorting Files In Directory

I have several external usb drives on my machine. Some of the folders on those drives contain several thousand files, the default is for them to be in name order. Fine. But i quite often want to rearrange them by date, everytime i do this i get the semi-transparent green progress bar at the top of the folder but it seems to take an age to complete.

On previous versions of windows clicking on the column you wanted files sorted by made the sort almost instant. Each time i go back to the folder i have to wait all over again. I thought i had added the folders to the library etc to make searching and sorting easier. Am i doing/not doing something stupid?

Hard Drive, Devices Window Takes Long Time To Open

When i open the "computer" window, to see the hard drive, devices, etc. It's taking five minutes for it to load. Why is it taking so long when the drives and devices should just pop up? Click on the start icon, move over to my computer, then wait forever for it to load.

It doesn't make sense why, this system is analyzing the content for so long when i just bought tis computer. I have a mac, and i know this is different. But my dell laptop, and my wife's old computer doesn't nearly take this long. If i right click over computer, open in new window appears, and it acts as it always has. Why the unnecessary difference between the two. It should be fixed.microsoft shouldn't let this go on for long.

Installing Programs Takes Too Long

I have seen similar issues raised on this forum but none of the answers so far work for me. My system specs are : windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram, 2. 80ghz when i attempt to install various programs (games, audio editing, gadgets) the pc runs through the standard pop-ups, license acceptance etc in normal time right up until it attempts to actually install the program. Then it appears to stop. The pc doesn't crash, other applications keep working (freecell helps pass the time).

The install window isn't frozen (the loading 'pulse' keeps moving). Task manager shows the install program as 'running', cpu usage is 12% or thereabouts. Physical memory approx 17%. So it appears there is plenty of capacity to handle the task but no urgency. For all of the programs i have tried to install i have used normal, administrator, compatibility & safe boot install modes with no effect. Disabling virusguard and unnecessary applications / processes has no effect.

For minor applications after 8 to 10 hours the install may complete, i guess other applications might also complete too but i don't have a week to spare. Please, please don't suggest 'microsoft installer cleanup utility' - this bug occurs for several different programs and on 1st install even in safe mode. Nd please don't ask me to reinstall windows 7. You may as well suggest i buy a new pc (actually a mac is looking good right now).

Programs Taking Long Time To Load

Windows 7 - when i right click on any icon, in desktop, programs, my computer, documents, it takes 5 minutes for the window to open. Also any program in system tools takes 5 minutes to load. Windows explorer must be corrupt. Before i do a complete wipe, i was hoping someone knew of an easier solution to my problem. This is what i am running.

Here is the problem i am having when right clicking. After running several complete disk scans, registry cleaner, disk defrags, error fixes, device mgr. You name it, i have ran it, even from the cmd, there are no system errors, except for one minor error pertaining to my monitor display.
I have searched through all my hardware, and checked for updates, it always comes back as latest version installed already.

What is happening is when i "right click" any icon on the dektop, pgms, my computer, recycle bin, etc. It takes windows explorer like 5 minutes to open the little options window. Here is the problem i am having when i left click. When i go to system tools, and try to run defrag, it takes the same amount of time or more to open. Left clicking on 95% of all pgms. Works fine with no hang ups.

My thought is, windows explorer has been infected somehow but gets by all my system checks. I really don't want to do a wipe, but if it will make this issue go away i have no choice. I must add, that after my complete system check and defrag, everything worked great, but after the next boot, i was right back where i started with the same problems mentioned above.

Pc Is Taking Long Time (10 Minutes) To Shut Down

I am having trouble working out why my laptop sometimes takes up to 10 minutes to shut down. It is an acer 5920g with a core 2 duo (t7300) and 2gb ram. It is running windows 7 home premium to which i have upgraded from vista home premium (both 32 bit). It is on a small home network but the problem still happens on moving it to a different network. The delay seems to be longer if the laptop has been switched on for longer - i.e. If the laptop has only been on for a few minutes then it shuts down very quickly but if it has been on for a few hours then it can take 10 minutes to shut down. Event viewer does not seem to be much help as even creating a custome log of all information around the time of the delay it shows nothing - here are the messages either side (nothing appears between these times:

Information 02/02/2010 22:09:14 kernel-general 12 none
Information 02/02/2010 22:00:20 kernel-general 13 none

I have run full anti-malware scans and am fairly confident nothing nasty is lurking. I've seen mention on some forums of clearing virtual memory on shutdown causing delays but windows 7 home premium does not seem to have the gpedit.exe utility that is recommended to cure this. Also i have looked in the registry and found a key labeled "clearpagefileatshutdown" which i assume would be the one to set with gpedit but this is set to 0x00000000 (0) - i'm guessing this setting means that the page file should not be cleared at shutdown - is that correct?

I have tried setting the registry key for waittokillapptimeout to both 2000 and 20000 but this seems to make no significant difference. Does anyone have any ideas of what else i can look for to try and find out what is causing the delay? Just as a final thought - while the close down screen is sitting doing nothing for the 10 minutes i have noticed some slow disc and network traffic but i can't tell what this is doing. As i said earlier there seems to be nothing in event viewer's logs - at least that i can find. I'd be really grateful for any help with this as i'm stuck for what to try next.

Long Time To Load Win 7 On A Sata Drive

Win 7, 64 bit loading on a gigabyte ma785gm-us2h with 4 gig of memory. One pata pullout drive, 2 dvd burners, one pullout sata, (hot swappable) and one internal 160 gig sata drive. Have tried raid, with no array and i am currently trying ahci setup for the internal drive. Only happens on sata internal drive. First load took about 6-8 hrs. Second load was about 3 hrs when it should be about 1/2 hr. On first install, (a few months ago) took about 1/2 hr. To install my new version of win 7 and all programs loaded in a minimal amount of time and were not sluggish ro run.

The same programs are taking a long time to load. It seems to load to a pata drive o. K. When it takes a long time to load my programs are sluggish to run the first time i loaded it new out of the box with the same programs to load everything was fine. I was impressed and had i not lost 2 sata drives set up as a raid aray 1 it would still be running.

Vista tends to do the same thing and i wouldn't load it but there are some features. I like so it is loaded on the other computer. For the first time in a while vista was about 1/2 hr to load and hope it doesn't crash for a while as i do not want to load xp onto the sata drive in matts computer. Windows 7 is on maries computer. Both computers are named after my kids. Version 7 is impressive over vista 32 bit.

Unable Eject Usb Flash Drive

I've recently installed windows 7 on my system and since then i am having problem in ejecting my usb devices. When ever i click on eject the pop-up notification in the system tray says "your hardware can be removed safely" but the light on the flash drive still keeps blinking and i can still access the drive. Even if i repeat the process of clicking on safely remove hardware at various location(system tray, devices and printers, my computer. ) I am still able to access the device despite the message "you can safely remove the hardware)

My flash drive has even produced bad sectors because of unplugging the device ignoring this.

Win 7 Won't Eject Usb Device Because It Is In Use

No devices (that i can find) are using my usb attached hard drive but my new windows 7 machine won't let me "eject" the usb device because it says it's in use. The usb attached hard drive worked fine just can't "safely" detach it.

Can't Eject Usb Hard Drive, Drive Always In Use

I have a 500gb maxtor onetouch 4 external usb backup drive that is set to do weekly backups with windows backup. This works great except that everything and their grandmother wants to spin the hard drive up whenever possible. This is not an ideal situation: with exception to backup, this drive is not used for anything. So i had a great idea, i'll keep the drive unmounted until i need to backup which then a newly created scheduled task would mount, backup and unmount when done! Well, turns out, windows doesn't think so. And this makes me a sad panda.

Only One Usb Port Will Work At A Time

If i connect two 500 gb external hds to my inspiron 1750 at the same time, they are both recognized by 'devices and printers' but only the one first connected can be opened in 'computer'. If i then eject both external hds and re-connect (pull out the plug and re-insert it in the same port) the hd that previously could not be opened now opens without a problem, normally. If i then re-connect the first hd, it then cannot be opened but is recognized in 'devices and printers'.

So - both external hds , their cables and the usb ports all work absolutely fine - but only one at a time. This is so in any combination of the three usb ports available. I can open a couple of flash drives simultaneously no problem.

I can open both external hds simultaneously on my tower pc with windows xp.

How can i get both external hds to open simultaneously on my windows 7 laptop, please?

You Cannot Eject Your Computer Because Devices In Docking Station

You cannot eject your computer because one of the devices in the docking station, 'ecp printer port (lpt1)' i'm running a dell latitude d830 and use a d-series docking station. When i try to eject my laptop using either the undock button on top of the docking station, or the eject hardware option in the windows 7 taskbar, i get a warning message saying "you cannot eject your computer because one of the devices in the docking station, 'ecp printer port (lpt1)', cannot be stopped because a program is still accessing it. "

However, i do not have anything connecting to the parallel port of the docking station, and this happens when all programs are closed! The only support i can find on this from microsoft is http://support.microsoft.com/?Kbid=842058 but that says its a windows xp issue, and the latest service pack fixes the problem. Which it might do, but it looks like it has been re-introduced in windows 7!

Now when i go online, try to download anything from the web, windows media center comes on, prevents me from going online through internet explorer, and prevents me from opening any download. What did i do?

Laptop was running problem free before i closed it down last night. Can i simply turn off the computer?

Long Boot Times

After getting to the log in screen, i type in my password and my system seems to hang for anywhere between 10 to 20 minutes. This started about 3 months ago and since then i have resigned myself to just sleeping my computer. That worked fine for a while, but not it's hanging for almost the same amount of time. The light on my hdd never goes out during these hangs.

I have tried the start up repair utility. I did not install anything new before this started happening either. I have not tried to reinstall windows because, in my opinion, this shouldn't be necessary. I tried (not sure if i did it successfully) to disable any and all external network connections (like my xbox 360 and other windows based computers) on the off chance that it was hanging trying to connect to their shared folders.

Ie8 Script Running Long

The last few times i have tried to access my hotmail inbox with ie8 i have gotten the following dialog:

Windows internet explorer stop running this script? A script on this page is causing internet explorer to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive.

-
Yes   no
-

If i click no and wait, then 30 seconds later or so i get the dialog again. If i click yes then ie locks up completely. That is, it stops displaying this dialog and becomes unresponsive. I have to end it with task manager. I can't disable javascript because the passport site needs javascript to function and if i put *. Mail.live.com into my restricted sites (where javascript is disabled) then the login process fails. I have experienced this on more than one computer. This one is running xp and the other windows 7. Both are running ie8. Any ideas?

Ie8, Office, Live Takes Several Minutes To Start

I'm running windows 7 64-bit with 12gb of ram on an i7 quad core. Whenever i start ie8 32-bit it takes several minutes before it will display a web page, most of that time it says waiting for about:blank in the status bar. I've searched the web and none of the solutions i've found work. I've noticed that office communicator and live meeting both take upwards of 5 to 6 minutes to start. I also use firefox and it starts on the same web pages as ie8 but only takes a second or two.

Since most of my work is using tools like share-point actually using firefox as my primary browser is not an option since it is not compatible with sharepoint. I've disabled all antivirus and even changed antivirus applications at one point so i don't think antivirus is an issue.

Boot Takes Minutes, Will Boot In Safe Mode

When i booted up this arvo, the computer took 15 minutes to get to the log in screen. Upon clicking the profile image, i had to wait another 5 minutes of unresponsiveness for even the desktop background to display. Rebooted 3-4 times, still happened, booted in safe mode, (which is how i'm writing this) and initially thought it was msmpeng.exe that was causing me issues, so i removed mse once i finally managed to get it going in normal mode. I thought the problem was fixed when i rebooted, and i had about 4-5 minutes of normal speeds before it slowed right down and became unresponsive.

When the computer is running, the actual computer itself sounds fine (hard disk is chattering away) but when going slow and unresponsive it only makes noises every 1-2 seconds, if that makes any sense, as if it's under a really heavy load. Hard to tell because i cant open anything. Ran a system restore, didn't do anything. I need help soon! I suspect a driver issue, but i'm just speculating. Specs: windows 7 home premium 64 bit 6gig ddr3 ram i7-860 cpu ati 5770 gpu

Cannot Change Time On The Taskbar

Once when i bought the computer it was fine. Then once i noticed that even though it was 5:10 pm sunday 4th of july, it showed that it was 1:10 am monday 5th of july! So i changed it. This is what i did:i clicked on the place where it showed me the time, and the clock and the calendar popped up. Then i clicked where it said "change date and time settings. " The window with the date and time and the time zone displayed came on, and i clicked the change date and time button, with administrator permission (which is me).

I doubled clicked the hour and used the arrows to set it correctly. And also with the minutes and seconds. And i changed the date. I clicked ok. Nothing happened- nothing changed, and the wrong time is still there. So what happened? How do i fix the time?

Any Time Upgrade Or Reinstall

I recently bought an hp laptop that had windows 7 home premium installed on it. I have a copy of windows 7 ultimate (promo retail) that i would like to use instead. I have installed it but have found that most of the extra stuff that hp throws in does not work on standard installs if windows. I could easily do a system restore and use my copy as a any time upgrade. If i do this does that key become tied with the home premium or could i reinstall it at a later date(as a retail version) and restore the laptop back to home premium

Win 7 Keeps Changing Time

And that screws up my tv watching and recording. It's very annoying. I've seen the problem here with vista (though my husband's laptop with vista never does it) and the only answer relates to the time changing on boot and having to do with the bios.

Well, my dell computer with windows 7 will change time even when it's left on and i checked the bios. The bios has the right time. When i noticed it tonight (it didn't record survivor), win7 said it was 3am. It was 9:15pm. I shut down the computer and checked the bios: 9:15pm.

I've even set this to automatically update every 4 hours. How did it get to be 3am? Will there be a patch for this win7 problem? I've tried turning off autosync, changing servers. And for awhile it stayed solid but then changed again!

Speeding Up Start Up Time

Since microsoft does not recommend or support registry cleaning programs, how then does one speed up his system when starting up? There are programs that start with my windows application that i do not want, or need to start with windows, and they will not let me remove them from the start up menu. Aol to be specific. I do not want it running all the time, but it will not allow me to remove it from the background. There are others that i do not need tying up resources, and they do not give me the option not to load on startup. Windows defender is ok, but i don't particularly like it.
