Move Win 7 Installation To C Drive

I inadvertently installed windows 7 on the recovery drive in my pc - drive d, not the c drive as it should be. I completely messed up my pc - somehow i installed windows 7 on the small recovery drive in my dell laptop - not the c drive. Now, all my software is gone and i cannot even reinstall ms office, since it forces the installation to the d drive and there is virtually no space.

All my files and photos and music are still on the c drive. How can i move the windows 7 installation to the c drive where it belongs?

Move Win 7 To A Different Hard Drive

Okay i had originally bought windows vista 64bit hp oem for my computer. Down the road i downloaded the 64-bit windows 7 while i was in university. I only had a wd 120gb drive, and i now have 50mb of empty space :( (computer is running way slow, and i need to have more space) so i bought a segate 500gb 7200rpm drive. Anyways i wanted to know, how can i install 7 onto my new drive and use my current one as a slave. My main problem is i don't have the disk for windows 7 b/c it was an upgrade, but i do have the verified serial number.

I cannot contact microsoft b/c they want to charge me 70$ just to talk to one of their support people. (Ridiculous, almost the cost of another oem). I guess the way i would like to do this is install the second hard drive and copy everything over to it, and then boot from that drive and wipe the one i'm using now. Possible?

Move User Folders Off System Drive

Move user folders off system drive? Want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not individually, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on e.got a brand new notebook with win 7 home premium preinstalled. Using win 7 language. I shrank the hard drive volume to 55gb.

Made new simple volumes. I want all personal data on e, so need to move the user directories to e. Not by individually changing the location tab on dozens of folders, but globally. So all new users i create will have their user folder and docs on e from the gitgo. In xp, i could just change the "my documents" link on each desktop to go to e*. * Instead of c*. *, But with win7?

Like windows home server and most wise os installations, the system drive is isolated and a drive or 2 or 3 for everything else.get a problem? Just restore the system drive.

Dual Boot - Move Boot Image To Second Drive

I have a problem with two different drives both running win7, one 32 the other drive64, on a dual boot system. I want to pull the win32 drive, but it also has my boot information for the win64 drive. When removed it will not boot. I have been working on this for 5-6 weeks. I want to remove the win7/32 and put the boot image of win7/64 on the second drive.

I booted from the win764 install dvd, and went to there pair your computer. The placethat displays the operating systems installed, none will show. I have tried bootsect from the command prompt. It seems to work, but tells me no partition on the second drive. Or on another attribute used, it can not find the path to the drive. I have tried rebuild bcd, fixmbr, etc.

Installation On A Non C: Drive, Still Shows On C: Drive

I have tried various methods and can change the drive letter designation of my various drives under w7p(64) but seemingly one cannot (easily) change the drive letter that the os operates under. (Why w7 feels it has to be on the c: drive eludes me!) My hdd was previously set up under xp with a c: for utility stuff, d: as the wxpp-os and i was trying to install w7p onto the e: partition. (A 1. 5 tb drive, so each partition has plenty of space. )

After rebooting, w7p displays that it had the c: drive, wxpp had the d: drive, and my utility partition had no drive letter designation at all. Rebooting to xpp showed the proper drive designations. As i mentioned first, i can use the "disk management" feature to change all the drive letters around other than for the w7 os drive. Xp has no problems with my setup, and i have even managed to get vista to accept residing on a non c: drive previously.

Any hints as to if or how i can get w7p to accept being called out on the e: drive? (Which is where it is/was installed after all, i just want it to wear its proper name tag. ) It's very confusing to dual boot the system and not have the drive letters be consistent. If w7 is using some sort of remapping to allow more varied handling of the drive resources, why can't it allow me to continue handling them the way i've been handling them for the past 20 years?

Formatting Hard Drive During Installation

I'm doing a custom install of windows 7 professional from vista home premium. I'd like to reformat the drive before installing, but i'm not sure how. It's unclear to me whether that option will appear during the installation process or if it's something i have to do on my own. Which is it? How do i reformat my disk before the install?

Ok, i just chose which drive to install on and clicked "next. " The program started installing 7! I just wanted to see what the "next" part of the setup was to see if it had the reformat option. Anyway, is there any way to reformat at this point? Will i have to install windows 7, reformat, and reinstall? I'm rather frustrated right now. Note to microsoft: make the button say "install, " not "next. "

Multiple Hard Drive Pc Installation

Just a simple question! At the moment i'm running xp - which means i'll need to move all my data etc (i know all that business). However, i have 2 hard drives on my pc - one which i will use for the os - the other for my music/videos etc. When i upgrade to windows 7, should i physically remove the music/video hard-drive? Or will it be safe, as i will be installing the os on the other hard-drive? I don't want to lose the data on the music/video hard-drive. I hope that makes sense!

Installation Cannot See Drive After System Partition

I recently got a hewlett packard 630 laptop which had linux os. I decided to replace it with windows 7 and face two major issues:

1) when i was installing win 7, it asked me to create a new hard drive because the 10gb partition could not fit win 7 ultimate 64-bit i wanted to install. I therefore created a 20gb hard drive and completed win 7 installation through usb. However, when i finished i could only see the 20gb hard drive and not the remaining 450gb.

2) i installed win 7 and ms office 2010 properly. However, the system is missing hp tools, such as network, ethernet, pci etc. As a result, i do not have internet. I tried a number of drivers from the hp site, with no success. How do i correct the problems above?

Installation Failed - The Wrong Volume Is In The Drive

Windows xp to windows 7 installation failed. "The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmculxfrer_en_dvd". Trying to install a legal copy of windows 7 (not downloaded either, actually purchased disk). The disk is an upgrade disk and i am upgrading from windows xp (32-bit) to windows 7 (64-bit).

When i attempt to install it, when it gets to "expanding windows files" i get the error message "the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmculxfrer_en_dvd into drive d:" and the installation fails regardless of whether or not i click "cancel" "ignore" or "continue". What is wrong?

I ran a system upgrade check before and everything seems to be ready for the 64-bit.

This question has been asked before but no solution proposed on this forum that i found. Everything is is so slow too! Just to get to the initial installation screen takes 20 minutes and when it begins installation it stalls at 0% for 30 minutes before it throws me the error. How can this be so hard to upgrade?

Will Upgrade Installation Require More Space On Boot Drive ?

I have a very small 32gb boot drive with vista premium installed. Will upgrade installation require more space on the boot drive? The boot drive i have is an 32gb ssd. Since ssds are so expensive i ordered this small one as a boot drive only. So will i need space available on the c drive to upgrade my windows vista premium 64-bit to windows 7 64-bit? I have a secondary hard drive as my f drive. It is 320gb and contains all my programs and games, leaving about 200 gigs left.

If space is indeed required from my c drive, is there an alternative way to upgrade?

Clean Installation Issues - Wrong Volume Is In Drive

Clean installation issues results various transient faults - mostly hangs. One reoccurring message is "the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume grmchpxfrer_en_dvd"

I'm using a retail version of windows 7 premium that i purchased tuesday night. I've tried on and off for the past three nights to install w7.initially, i had xp on the machine and installed w7 via the backup of the xp files and using the network for additional patches. The install hung towards the end after i entered a password for the user account (e.g. Drives dead, mouse/keyboard unresponsive, etc).

So i hard-cycled the machine. At this point i was able to log on, but the dvd drive or my second internal drive would not function. I figured something had went wrong with the install over xp and i had no issues with trying a clean install, so i went for that it next.

Prior to the first clean install i removed my second hd and all usb devices to minimize the hardware in play. Once i started running the clean install i've seen mostly hangs during the file extraction process (3%, 11% - haven't got to 62% yet :o) ). One error message in particular i"ve seen is listed in the title "please insert volume grmchpxfrer_en_dvd".

Some things i've tried: the package and disc were in mint condition when i purchased them so hopefully there are no issues with the integrity of the dvd. My machines dvd drive is in decent shape and i have recently installed other operating systems and watched dvd's without a without a problem. I don't believe the disc or drive are issues.

I've messed around with turning off the floppy, usb and ahci support in the bios. I've tried installing the 32 and 64 bit versions. I tried to access drivers off the gigabyte cd, but that didn't work so much. At this point i'm open to new suggestions :d

My hardware:
Gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l - http://www.Newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=n82e16813128059
Wd raptor - wd360gd
E6850
Nvidia 8800 gt
Sony dvd drive

Ocz Ssd Drive And Reformat Installation Issues

I was having difficulty with my motherboard bios not reading my ocz vertex ssd and 2 other hd. I believe this was due to an incorrect setup of previous bios to run a raid configuration in ahci. The only way the motherboard was able to read the drives again after all cmos were cleared was to put a jumper onto the ocz ssd. I am now trying to reformat my ocz 60gb ssd in order to install windows 7. After inserting the windows 7 disc i am able to access the installation prompt, when i select the ocz drive windows 7 is unable to install, however it gives me the option to install a driver for the device.

1. Will i be able to re-install the ocz ssd drivers from this prompt?

2. Any other suggestions for a fix?

3. I am also having trouble figuring out which driver the ocz drive requires, because i am unable to determine its current driver version.

.msi Installation Directory Must Be On A Local Hard Drive

Every time i try to run a particular . Msi i get this. "Installation directory must be on a local hard drive". Its not the msi as ive tested it on another computer. The msi is a plug-in tool called t-splines by autodesk. Ive also tried older versions with the same error, things i've tried so far:

Sys restore
Safe mode
Right click - take ownership

I uninstalled 7zip which i already had, then reinstalled with the . Msi from the website to test if it was all msi, however it actually worked. I was looking around for other . Msi install software just to test it but can't find any. If you could point me in the direction of some . Msi files which i can test on my rig. Edit, just tried a few other msi's i had on my computer and i get the error 1723.

Win 7 Upgrade Version - Installation On Reformatted Hard Drive

Win 7 (upgrade version) reinstallation following hard drive reformat. Need to reinstall xp now in order to activate win 7. I made the mistake of creating primary boot drives too small for an os other than xp or linux. Shortly after install i was unable to update my win 7 because of lack of space on the hard drive (all programs i could change the installation of, were on a separate drive). That meant i had to wipe the hard drive to repartition it.

I was under the impression that i could upgrade to win 7 after a clean install by putting the disk in and having windows check for it, like when i upgraded from me to xp. (Yes, i realize now the error of my ways. ) Now i need to fix it. Add to it, i have 32-bit xp and 64-bit win 7.

Having contacted microsoft tech support, i was told i could simply reinstall my xp and win 7 would recognize that it was there and set up dual boot. That isn't the case, as i suspected. In the reformat, i have lost some data that i thought i had backed up and obviously didn't, which is why i really don't want to reinstall win 7 a third time after reinstalling xp.

I have no windows. Old because of the reformat/repartitioning of my drive. Is there anything else i can do? (I'm so tired of being penalized with drm, activation etc. For purchasing licensed software because of all the pirates out there!).

Mouse Cursor Wont Move

Today i did something really stupid. I was in an unsupervised chatroom earlier and another person and i got into it and i could definently tell that i angered him. I left the chatroom and about 15 mins later im on another website and the mouse cursor suddenly freezes and will not scroll on the page. Everything else seems to be working fine. So i restart the computer, the mouse is working when the windows password page comes up, so i type in the password and that page loads and then the main page comes up (the one with all the programs etc) and as soon as that pops up that is when the mouse cursor freezes and will not scroll or move.

Everything else continues to upload and seems to be working fine. So i restart the computer and put it in safe mode and the mouse works fine moves and everything. Anyways, the bottom line is i think that other person sent me a virus or something that wont allow my cursor to move in regular mode. What should i do? Also, i cannot get the sound to work on my computer in safe mode.

The bottom right volume icon says "audio service not running" and i would like it running in safe mode until i can get this cursor problem resolved. Any help is greatly appreciated and please explain in laymans terms because i know absolutely nothing about computers. Thank you so much for your time and have a beautiful day.

Website Blinks When I Move The Mouse

I have ie8 x64, and windows vista home x64. Ever since installing ie8 via windows update, i have had a very annoying problem. Lots of websites, including this page where i am submitting this question, blink or flash when i move the mouse. Just the page and elements on it, not the ie interface or windows task bar. I have read some confusing things as to whether this is an adobe flash player problem with ie8 x64 or just a glitch with ie8, but as it is doing it on this page, which from the source does not use adobe flash, i am not sure it is the problem.

Is It Ok To Move Backup Files / Directories?

I'm in the midsts of doing my first backup on a new laptop running windows 7 professional. I'm backing up to an external 2tb usb drive. The backup is about halfway done, and so far has created files called frank-laptop (my pc's network name) and mediaid. Bin, as well as a directory called windowsimagebackup, in the root directory of the external drive, which the pc recognizes as e:. I'd like to do some manual backups of data from other family computers to this same usb external drive. In order to keep from mixing files up, i'd like to create a new directory on the external drive to move the windows 7 backup files/directories into (say, something like "win 7 backup files").

Can i just use windows explorer to create a new directory on the external drive, and move the visible backup files/directories there? Is there anything special i need to do to let the system know where the files will now be stored? Are there any invisible files i need to worry about? Or does windows 7 itself provide some functionality i should use to relocate the backup files?

Move Hd To Another Computer Brand And Still Run Win 7

Converting from an oem version of win 7 to a full retail package to allow my drive to be used on another computer in the case of a computer crash. My computer crashed big time but the drive is ok and i need to somehow upgrade the oem win xp home to a version that will allow me to run on another brand of computer and not lose the programs & data on the drive.

This happened on my xp machine and i am considering purchasing a new computer with an oem windows 7. But i refuse to be locked to a particular computer brand or model in case of a crash but the hard disk is still ok. If i purchase a full retail package and overwrite the oem version will i be able to move my hd to another computer brand and still run the windows 7?

Desktop Icons Move - Multiple Monitors

I am using windows 7 64-bit on a laptop that i connect to an external monitor each day at work. Because the external monitor is higher resolution, the desktop extends beyond the area of the laptop monitor. When i arrange my icons on the external monitor desktop, and then later restart my computer without the external monitor, my icons get completely jumbled around. When i then plug in the external again, i have to spend 5 minutes rearranging my desktop.

This is getting very aggravating. The only partially successful solution i've found so far is to hit f8 to change the monitor selection and then put the computer to sleep, rather than shutting down. This works sometimes, but is not optimal and occasionally fails. What i want to do is lock the icons in place so they don't move around when i change monitors. Any suggestions?

Unable To Move / Delete / Rename Files

It's a simple problem but i cant find any solution. I dl a video from youtube (the 'guide' i followed http://www.Youtube.com/watch?V=q-c5ldefcxa) and now i have some files with the size 0 bytes on my desktop that i cant move, delete or rename. I've tried delete, shift+delete, drag and drop in the trash, deleting using cmd. The feedback is that my comp is unable to find the files.
I downloaded a program that delete files at boot (gipo@moveonboot) but it returns with 'access denied' when i select the files.

I've also tried to create a new file with the exact name and when i do it 'disappears' into the file i want to delete, but when i drop the file it is deleted and the original file remains (when i rename the file theres no warning that it's the same name as another file). I'm out of ideas to approach this problem so please help me! Running w7 home premium on a dell studio 15 (don't think it matter but anyway. )

Ps. The files is just annoying and not dangerous in any way, also the ending is just a '. ' 'example. Flv. ' ds.
