Fresh Install Of Win7 On Sata Drive

I have tried several times to install windows 7 oem onto my freshly built computer onto a sata 2 drive. It hangs up each time after it copies the files off the dvd and says its starting up windows. No error messages are displayed. It never gets to the point where it asks me if i need to install 3-party drivers for the gigabyte sata controller. I have tried to install with the wd drive both non-partitioned and partitioned/formatted to ntfs. What am i doing wrong?

Gigabyte ga-ma785gmt. Ud2h

Update as of 12/19/09

I have finally got back to trying to finish the build after about 10 days of waiting to get the time to sit down withthe system again. I'm developing a painful disgust for windows 7. The software is real touchy in comparison with windows xp which i have loaded on several types of systems with no problems. I went through some forums on the subject and found several suggestions which ultimately helped me get the software installed. The system subsequently crashed while getting updates from microsoft's website. I'm now going through the motions of trying to reload the software. Here is what a few people suggested:

1. Remove all hardware not needed for the install: cd/rw, external usb devices, etc. And bring memory down to one stick. (Done) note: i never had to do this with xp.
2. Make floppy or usb with sata driver. Install when prompted. (Done)

Note: make sure you install sata and not raid driver because people have had problem with raid drivers during install.

3. Make sure bios is set to sata mode. (Done).
4. Make sure your not using raid sata connectors. I have 5 connectors all the same color listed as sata2_0, sata2_1, sata2_2, sata2_3, and sata2_4 which according to my manual can all be used for sata or for raid depending on bios setting. (Done).

My current install says it is completing installation and has been setting in the same spot at the progress bar at the bottom #2 installing windows for over 90 minutes. I believe the install hung up again for whatever reason. Going to try again and recheck everything. Failed again taking motherboard, processor, and ram back to fry's tomorrow.

Update as of 12-20-09

I returned the gigabyte ga-ma785gmt. Ud2h, amd phenom ii x4 965 and 4 gig of corsair dual channel ddr3 1666+ back to fry's for store credit. Fry's said that due to the issues they suspect that the motherboard was bad. My new selection was asus m3n78-vm motherboard, amd phenom ii x4 965 processor, and kingston ddr2 2gb ram. I built the system and windows 7 loaded with no problems.

The bios and windows 7 recognized the sata 2 hard drive without even loading the sata driver at install. The system seems stable. I'm going to let it run overnight and see if i get any errors. My faith in windows 7 is restored.

Upgrade Vs Fresh Install

I'm getting conflicting information from repairmen and on the web about windows 7 upgrade. I'm currently running vista and am experiencing very slow response. I was advised by a retailer to buy a full version of widows 7 rater than a up grade so that i could do a complete fresh install from vista 32 bit to 7 64 bit and completely get rid of all traces of vista. My computer will support 64 bit. After i bought the full version i've had others tell me that i could do the same complete fresh install with an upgrade version.

I've just purchased a laptop with  7 installed like what i see and want 7 on the desk top to take advantage of a home network. Can anyone clear this up once and for all? Have i been swindled?

Security Issues On A Fresh Install

My question is are the issues outlined in the numbered points 2) to 5) below likely security breaches of a fresh install of windows 7.

By way of background i was using vista, found remote access software in use everytime i installed it, and as i couldn't be sure of the integrity of the vista install files held on partition, i decided to buy windows 7 upgrade and see if that could be installed securely. I use a dsl wifi router. I used for this install trend micro web protection add-on, pc tools threat fire and zone alarm extreme security. The laptop the install was on is behind closed doors, i.e. , Only myself could have had access (as far as you can be sure about these things at least, though i do use a bios password).

1) i installed windows 7 update fri 12th mar just after midnight. The hard disk was completely reformated from the command prompt (not a quick format). I turn off remote access, file and printer sharing and public folder sharing and disable autoplay and install usb disable software. I also install software to show me when / people have been logged in. I use a public dns.

2) fri 10. 50am, trend micro gave a 'bot found: malicious software launched by remote control' warning (i rebooted and ran a scan for viruses - no results).

3) fri 10. 50am threatfire reports: c:program fileswindows media playerwmpnetwk.exe 'this program is attempting to modify your computer so that another program can access it' - this was supsicious because i had been running windows 7 for a while, and so why just now decide to run this program, especially when wmp media sharing is disabled by default.

3) fri 12. 50pm threatfire reports: 'a system dll has been copied and modified', the file being c:windowssystem32sppsvc.exe

4) sun 16. 30pm threatfire reports: 'a system dll has been copied and modified', the file being c:windowssystem32loginui.exe

5) yesterday evening (sun), a message appeared lower right on the desktop that my install of windows 7 was not a legal copy and the desktop went black, the system info screen showed no product key and no option to set it. This fixed itself this morning (mon) for some odd reason.

6) i have used zone alarm's deep and rootkit scans with no results.

I run a website that gets over 500 unique visits each day, and have been for 3 years now, but in the past few months i have found myself heavily under attack from hackers (this could be down to my first press coverage).

I shall try a fresh install with a few changes, but otherwise will also set up openbsd. However, any hints on setting up a secure windows install would be greatly appreciated!

Fresh Install Aero Crash

My computer has run perfectly in the past 7 months using the computer for internet browsing and pc games. The thing that was not the norm that happened today was that i installed quicktax to try and view my tax information.couple hours later, my computer crashed and upon trying to restart it, the computer would not start because the motherboard had difficulty loading ahci drivers for my drives. After some fiddling around, i decided to reformat my computer, as i was getting some stuttering in games from my last reformat. The problem now is that after the reformats, i crash into a black screen when enabling aero glass effects after a clean install. This has never happened in the past 7 months when i have reformatted my computer about 3-4 times. What could be the problem now?

I'm 99% sure the issue stems from aero glass effects as i don't get any problems with it disabled. 1) clean install + latest amd catalyst drivers2) clean install + windows updates + latest amd catalyst drivers 3) clean install + windows updates + windows video card drivers 4) clean install + updated motherboard bios + older amd catalyst drivers/sfc scannow: windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations. Sata Drive Order

I have two western digital cavier (wd5001aals) drives on my new system. One is fixed and the other is in a removable vantec ez 2 swap case (mrk-300st). I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64.

The fixed drive is bootable and contains windows (c: drive). The removable drive (d:) is empty. Windows' disk management indicates that the fixed drive is 'disk 1' and the removable drive is 'disk 0'. I wish to reverse this designation. That is: the fixed drive should be 'disk 0' and the removable should be 'disk 1'. I've tried using different sata ports on the mother board but no matter how i switch them, windows always keeps the designation the same. The mother board is: asus p755d premium.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how i can resolve this issue?

Cannot Install Win 7 On Sata Hard Disk - Intel 945 Chipset Motherboard

I troubleshoot more than one pc with dual boot system which run windows xp and windows 7. Which system are most latest- intel g31 chipset, 2gb ram, 500 gb sata hdd, 2. 5 ghz intel dual core etc.
But, now i face some installation problem with my pc. Yesterday i run my pc smoothly with windows 7 with 2 ghz pentium 4, 1 gb ram, 80 gb pata hdd, 945 chipset motherboard etc. I need more storage area, so i purchase a hitachi 500 gb sata hdd. My motherboard has one pata connector and two sata connector. I use the pata connector to attach my hdd and dvd. They worked fine.

But, when i attach my new 500 gb sata hdd to sata connector and remove the 80 gb pata hdd. Only dvd attach with pata connector. I insert my windows 7 installtion dvd to the drive and restart my pc and go to bios. This is amibios. I find bios recognize the sata hdd as primary master and dvd to secondary slave drive. I also find sata drive mark in ide form. (Their also raid and ahci also available. ) I save the configuration and reboot. After reboot, when pc want to start from dvd, i press the space key from keyboard and the setup start to copy installation file in 2 stage and i find it complete the copy process. And pc going to start up, but, but a green color bar running through a tube for about 2 hours. Nothing happen. Read more at the forum.

The bios is set to ide/sata. If i go back and reset it as ahci, windows fails to boot. What have i done incorrectly and how can i correct the problem?(Intel i7 860, 8 mb ram. Evga p55-sli mobo)

How To Prevent Users From Ejecting Sata Drive ?

Hi, i've a second sata drive (wdc wd15ears-00z5b1 if it matters), that windows 7 thinks is removable, and shows in the "safely remove hardware and eject media" applet, allowing any user to "eject" it. The hard drive is not removable, but sometimes users (non-admin) occasionally click "eject" it and remove from the system, forcing me to restart computer to bring it back. How do i disable this functionality and tell windows 7 this drive is not removable and may not be "ejected" by my users?

Recover Disc Image From Sata Drive

I just purchased a new laptop. Spent all last weekend upgrading the os to win7 pro; reinstalling all my apps; and transferring all my data. Done! I then discovered one of the usb ports didn't work.
When i return to the store, i found they had the same laptop, but with a larger hd at the same price. So. I need to transfer all my "stuff" to the new machine.

I used the windows disk image utility. I successfully created the images on an external esata drive.
When i tried to run the windows restore utility on the new machine, it didn't recognize any available images. (The esata drive appears ok in windows explorer.

Win 7 Does Not Support Sata Cdrom Drive

I installed windows 7 home premium from my lg gsa-h62l super multi dvd rewriter which has a sata interface. Device manager sees the drive as hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-h62l ata device. When i insert a disc, the drive spins up, the light flashes a few times, then goes, the hard disk led comes on solid. However, nothing else happens, and the hard disk led stays on solid. When i eject the disk, the hard disk led still stays on solid forever, i have to shut down the system to restore normal led activity on the hard disk.

I know the dvd drive is good, cause it still works fine on my xp computer. It also works on the windows 7 computer, if i boot up from bios with a bootable cd in it. However, if i boot up with the windows 7 cd in it, it goes past the starting windows screen, then hangs on the blue windows 7 splash screen. The mouse pointer still works. Ctrl-alt-del does nothing. The hard disk led is on solid. Have to force power shut-down. This is with the bios raid mode set to either ide or raid. If set to ahci, the computer boots from the windows 7 disc ok, but does not boot from the hard disk, which also has a sata interface. It hanhs on the circling windows icon display, the resets.

I cannot do a system restore, since windows 7 was installed on a computer that had xp running on it.

Long Time To Load Win 7 On A Sata Drive

Win 7, 64 bit loading on a gigabyte ma785gm-us2h with 4 gig of memory. One pata pullout drive, 2 dvd burners, one pullout sata, (hot swappable) and one internal 160 gig sata drive. Have tried raid, with no array and i am currently trying ahci setup for the internal drive. Only happens on sata internal drive. First load took about 6-8 hrs. Second load was about 3 hrs when it should be about 1/2 hr. On first install, (a few months ago) took about 1/2 hr. To install my new version of win 7 and all programs loaded in a minimal amount of time and were not sluggish ro run.

The same programs are taking a long time to load. It seems to load to a pata drive o. K. When it takes a long time to load my programs are sluggish to run the first time i loaded it new out of the box with the same programs to load everything was fine. I was impressed and had i not lost 2 sata drives set up as a raid aray 1 it would still be running.

Vista tends to do the same thing and i wouldn't load it but there are some features. I like so it is loaded on the other computer. For the first time in a while vista was about 1/2 hr to load and hope it doesn't crash for a while as i do not want to load xp onto the sata drive in matts computer. Windows 7 is on maries computer. Both computers are named after my kids. Version 7 is impressive over vista 32 bit.

Sata Hard Drive To Usb Adaptor Cannot Access

I cannot get my windows 7 x64 laptop to access my sata hard drive connected via a usb adaptor. Remove Drive From Raid / Change Sata Mode From Raid To Ahci

Remove a drive from raid then change sata mode from raid to ahci, situation: i have 3 physical hdds: 1 ssd and 2 identical mechanical drives. The ssd stores the win 7 x64 pro installation while the mechanical drives, in raid 1, store data. The sata mode is set to raid at the moment. I want to remove a mechanical hard drive, thus, breaking the raid. Using the intel raid manager interface, i think i will still have all the data on the 2 mechanical hard drives.

Then, i will want to change the sata mode to ahci (1) because i will no longer have a raid (2) i want to enable trim for my ssd. Questions: how will changing sata mode to ahci affect my os installation? Should i change the mode before or after i remove a raid member? Will i have to reinstall windows?

Ide Hard Drive Connected Via Usb To Ide/sata Adapter

I have an old maxtor 9 1303d6 ide drive which is connected via a usb to ide/sata adapter and an active usb hub. The device worked fine under vista 32 ultimate. After doing a clean install of windows 7 ultimate and subsequent updates, the device is no longer seen in windows explorer. Device manager does see the hard drive, but the usb controller section of devman now shows an unknown device.

(I suspect that this is the usb to ide/sata adapter) the device is accessible using a hard disk recovery utility which can read the maxtor drive. I've tried to unininstall/reinstall and have moved the adapter from port to another on the hub. The device returns a code 43 error and i've tried the suggested kb updates with no luck.

New Sata Boot Drive Wont Boot

I have a new 2t sata drive (seagate). It took about 5 days of research to finally get my computer to see it. I used seagate's disk wizard to clone my older drive (ide). The sata drive was supposed to become the c: drive. Disk management does label it as the c drive but in "computer" it sees it as f:i disconnected my older drive and when i booted up the bios kept looking for the ide drive. Although the motherboard has sata built in, there seems to be no way to tell the bios that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive.

Also with the original drive disconnected i get a "ntldr not found. Press control-alt-delete to restart. "I believe mybios is the problem. I have flashed it with the newest bios i could find, (dates from 2005) but no sata adjustments in the bios. How can i make the bios know that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive?

Or is there a way to trick the bios into thinking that it is an ide drive? As it is, the computer is recognizing the sata drive as a scsi drive. I read somewhere that this is not a problem. In summary, i want my system to boot from the sata drive. I would like to reformat the original drive.

Can i install from a usb hard drive instead of the ufd? Then i would not be limited to the usb size of 16gb or 32gb.

Problem Booting In Sata Mode

I recently built a computer using an asrock x58 extreme mobo. I installed windows 7, but realized only afterward that the mobo's default setting for the hdds was ide rather than sata.

I followed the registry hack instructions to change the "start" parameter for the msahci driver to "0" (, rebooted, changed the bios setting to ahci and everything worked fine. The sata drivers loaded and things were looking good!

However, a few days later i had a problem with going into "sleep" mode. The computer hung, and after several minutes i just switched if off and rebooted.

Now, i cannot get it to boot properly with the bios in ahci mode. The registry entries are still the same as when ahci was working, but it will not boot in sata mode. I get the message "problem loading os". Changing the bios back to ide allows me to boot.

Any ideas as to what went wrong (was it the hard shutdown that messed me up?), And any ideas on how to get sata working again?

Sata Optical Drives Not Enabled In Win 7

I have a dual-boot computer with two hdds, one running vista 32-bit home and the other windows 7 professional. My motherboard is an asus m2n-sli deluxe with bios updated to latest stable version. The win7 os apparently cannot recognize my sata optical drives, 2 internal and one usb, as they do not appear when i open "computer". They do appear in device manager with the yellow error signs (!) Next to them. When i ran ms fixit, i was told there was an incompatibility between the away mode function in the bios and 64-bit oss, so i went into bios and disabled amd live! Which i understand from the forums is that function, but no improvement.

Also, i moved a sata optical drive from sata1 after learning from an asus tech that the nvidia chipset has a problem with an optical drive being in that position. And my sata hdds are recognized.

Win7 Not Recognizing Sata Native Mode

My problem seems the opposite to many already posted about sata support. My computer has a msi 863 neo3 mb which has sata support. I had to load special sata drivers to get xp to recognize the sata drives and xp ran on this machine stably for 5 years. It has an intel p4 ht 3400 with 2 gb ram. Win7 would not load past the 1st file copy stage until i reset the bios back to legacy isa mode. On successful completion of win7 install and all the available updates i reset the bios back to native mode but now win7 hangs again on starting windows stage.

The machine has 1 ide drive and 2 sata drives  in native mode i can start the computer and it will by default boot grub and load ubuntu 10. 04. I can also from grub chose windows xp which takes me to the win7 boot loader where i can chose either xp or win7. If i chose xp it loads fine but if i chose win7 it hangs. However if i set the bios to legacy mode i don't see all the drives so i don't get grub at all. Just goes straight to the win7 boot loader where i can only choose win7, which loads fine.

If i put back sata native mode i see win7 as a subset of grub which will not load as described above. Win7 is on the 1st ata drive with xp and ubuntu on the 3rd drive in separate partitions. I expected win7 to better support native sata mode and was surprised that changing the bios back to legacy allowed win7 to install. I guess it did not like the sata driver for xp.

The bios has also been updated after win7 installed to see if this would help but it appears to have made no difference. I was expecting that once win7 was fully installed, updated and stable it would allow the change back to native mode in the bios. I think i need to do something in the boot loader for win7 to account for the adjusted position of the win7 partition it assumes when in native mode relative to the other drives.

Win7 Can't See Sata Drives But Bios Can

My computer was running win 7 64 on a 2t stripe without any problems until last night when i tried to load a game that has anti pirate software on it. It installed the game and needed to reboot. After the reboot windows couldn't see the stripe. I can see both drives in bios but windows can't find them. I have a lot of stuff on the drives and don't really want to loose it if i can help it. I cant run any kind of repair as it doesn't see the drives to fix them.

Sata Storage Controller Driver Installation

I have a fresh install of win7 prof x64 on an 17/930 system. In trying to fix a problem with media center stuttering, i looked at my device drivers and noticed that the sata ahci controller driver that was installed by win 7 is a generic ahci driver circa 2006 (6. 1. 7600. 16385). My intel matrix storage manager has a much more recent driver available from asus for my p6x58d-e motherboard.
Question - can i install the new storage controller driver now that win 7 is already installed? If so, what is the correct process?

Install From One Hard Drive To Another

So what i want to do is fairly simple sounding, but i don't know how to accomplish it. I have the digital download version of windows 7 that was offered through the college student promotional pre-order deal. The specific file name is "win7-p-retail-en-us-x86.exe". I have another hard drive, it's twice as large as this one, and it's formatted clean, nothing on it. What i want to do is have both drives plugged into my pc, and install it from my current drive onto the new one.
