Network Files Vanishing

I currently have a network with a 2008 server and a variety of windows xp and windows 7 machines. One of the users running windows 7 has a short cut on her desktop from a folder on a mapped network drive. This folder is used to store faxes from a canon fax machine. For some reason in the morning she is able to see the faxes in the folder. At any random time during the day she will open the shortcut and no faxes will appear in her view. Yet one of the xp workstations next door sees all of the faxes. Once i reboot her pc and log her back in she can once again see the faxes.

I have disabled offline files in her local group policy, i have set the auto disconnect to server to -1 effectively turning off the network drives disconnecting i have set her netlogon batch file to goto servername. Domain. Local-share-name so that it eliminates netbios issues and solely uses dns to find the server. I am at my whits end with these "odd" network interruptions and not sure why various peoples files just seem to disappear and require a reboot to see them on the server again.

Downloaded Files Are Vanishing

I am helping my cousin with her machine, and this one has me a bit baffled. She is running ie8 on a vista machine. Whenever a download occurs, whether you choose "run" for an executable, "save" for any file, or "open" for any file, the file completes the download, but it never arrives at its destination. Saved files are never in the destination folder, opened files never open in their respective programs, and run executables never start. Searches for the files by name come up with nothing.

I have tested two things. First, files that can be opened within plugins, such as a pdf, open just fine as long as they are opened within ie. If a pdf is downloaded to the hdd with the expectation that it will open upon completion using adobe as a separate program, the download finishes, and nothing happens. The file is nowhere to be found.

As a baseline, i wanted to know if another browser would work. I got chrome onto the machine, and i do not have this issue, but my cousin would rather have ie back. Any suggestions?

Files Send To Dvd-rw Drive On Network Results In Deleted Files

"send to dvd-rw drive" when the source files are on a network drive results in deleted files! Windows 7 rc 7100. Have a mapped drive to another computer. I opened the folder, right clicked on a group of .doc files. I choose "send to dvd-rw drive". Responded to the prompt of "use like usb drive" or use in a cd/dvd player by choosing the 2nd choice. Then was faced with a prompt that filename.doc is no longer in this location cancel/retry/skip. All the files were gone! Not in recycle bin of either computer.

Vanishing Window

I have been using windows 7 for two weeks now. Everything was going well until two days ago. When i click to activate the control panel screen, the control panel icon is placed on the taskbar. The window is not displayed. When i click on the icon on the taskbar, the window zips across the screen and disappears beyond the right side of the screen. If i click the taskbar icon again, the window flashes from beyond the right side of the screen and disappears on the task bar.

Every once in awhile, clicking on the control panel icon produces normal result (window shows up on desktop) but then the problem reappears again. I really would like to use the control panel (you know, backup files, change properties, etc. Etc. ), But i can't access it.

Live Mail Vanishing Folders

I use an isp that provides a web mail client, but have always preferred to use my oem email provided with my windows software. I have been doing this since the days of outlook, 1997 - and now i use windows live mail with my windows 7 software. It is just easier to handle my email this way, as i have more than one email account and all can be sync'd in the one program. My question is this:  where does my personal folder keep disappearing to? At the bottom of my main email i create a folder with name on it, to save emails i may need later.

About a week ago, i logged into my email as usual, and was reading and sorting my email and when i went to transfer some to my personal folder to save, the personal folder was not there. The next day, a folder appears at the bottom of my list, under storage that has a folder, deleted items, imported folder, with my main mail name  person1, and my secondary name person2, and emails that are over a month old are in that file. About a day after that, a few files, cannot be sure it was all of them, appears back in a folder with person1 at its original location.

Now, it is a week later, and that original file has disappeared again. Is there some setting i need to revise?  Is there some sync setting that i am missing?  I have read the knowledge base, and i have not seen any solution or description of this exact problem. What can i do?

Text Vanishing From Folder Names

Every few days or weeks (depending on use) when i open a media player (i've had this happen with both windows media player and winamp) all the song titles that use asian (chinese and japanese characters specifically, i have no other languages to test it on) text have been replaced with blocks. When i try opening the mp3 files in explorer, all of the folders and subfolders using asian text have also been replaced with blocks. If i try to type the information in again, the characters all turn into blocks immediately.

When i reboot, the information is back exactly as before, so it's not being lost, something is just going wrong with the text display. I have no idea if this is being caused by a program or not - i always notice it first in a media player and then find it in the folder names as well, but since it affects the names of folders in the default windows explorer view it seems to be more than one program failing to render text right.

Ps i have no idea why my post is in grey font, it defaulted to that and if there's a way to change it i don't know. Sorry it's a pain to read.

Cannot View Shared Files On Network

I have a home wireless network with three nodes, a desktop named desktop hard wired to a wireless router, a wireless notebook named pc-user, and a network printer, also hard wired to the router, that works with both computers. The desktop runs windows 2000 professional while the notebook runs windows 7 home premium. Appropriate folders on both computers are set for sharing. Neither of the users on the desktop, administrator or me by name, require passwords. The desktop can see and use shared files on the notebook.

The notebook shows the desktop as a node on the network but when i click on the desktop icon on the notebook network window to open a desktop folder i get a pop up window that says, "pc-user my name, a block to type in a password and an error message that says logon failure. " No amount of fiddling, creating passwords on the desktop and then using them on the notebook when trying to get into the desktop will work. I keep getting the logon failure message.

Cannot Add Files On Mapped Network Drive

I am attempting to connect to my server via explorer, yet mapping a network drive isn't working correctly for me. I can delete files/directories just fine, although i am unable to upload any files. The error message i receive is: an error occurred opening the folder on the ftp server. Make sure you have permission to access this folder.

Details: the handle is invalid. There should not be an issue with permissions as i can connect via command prompt without problem, and i can delete files/directories so i should have write permissions. I have never experienced this issue with vista before, and the tech support on my host has no idea either. I'm running windows 7 x64, build 7100. I'll upload a dxdiag if more information is required.

Mapping Network Drives On A Home Network Issue

I have two pc on my home network, one is a desktop running window 2000, attached to this is an external hard drive. The second is a laptop running windows 7. Before i upgraded to windows 7 i was running window vista on the laptop. When i had window vista on my laptop i was able to map a network drive to both the desktop's hard-drive and also to the external hard drive attached to the desktop.

After upgrading to windows 7 when i try to access the desktop or map the external hard drive i'm asked for a domain password. When i enter the user id and password of the desktop i keep getting the request for my domain password. I don't remember setting up a domain password at the time of the windows 7 upgrade.

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

A2c Files Downloaded As Zip Files

If you go to alice.org and try to download one of their image files, ie8 changes the extension from a2c to zip making the file unusable unless the user manually changes the file extension.

http://alice.org/index.php?Page=gallery/amusement park/index

In our school network users are not allowed to change the file extension so that does not work. I found that the user when downloading has to change the file type to all files and change the file extension then. This is a bother to have to remember. When i tried with a different browser (chrome) the a2c file was recognized correctly. The computers in my school are laptops running windows xp. At home my desktop runs windows 7 and the problem is there as well. There was no problem with ie7.

Docx Files Downloading As Zip Files

I am having an issue with docx files turning into zip files when i try and download them in ie8. I have done alot of research on this problem and have looked into the 2 main solutions to this problem: 1) set security settings to "open file based on file content, not file extension" to disable  2) check the mime type table on the web server and make sure the office 2007 extensions are added.

The first step i tried and the file was still trying to open as a zip file. The second one i was only able to ask the vendor because the web server does not belong to me, but the vendor said they were able to get the same exact docx file to download as a docx file and everyone on their end was able to. I am able to save the zip file and rename the file extension to docx and open it, but sadly this will not be an acceptable answer.

I've tried adding registry settings to allow it to open with docx files as well with no success.
I am curious if anyone has any other suggestions for me?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

Network Name

Running windows 7 home prem 32bit i just replaced my wireless router. I have 4 pc's connected in my network; 2 ethernet; 2 wireless. Prior to this change out when i placed my mouse pointer over the network strength meter in the taskbar of all pc's. All showed "banker".

When i started up the new router. The select a location window appeared on all pc's. I selected "home network". I had to do this on all pc's. All my connections are fine to all pc's. However, now when i place my mouse pointer over the network strength meter in the taskbars. I see on 1 pc. "Network 4", another pc shows "home 2". None of the pc's show the same.

I opened network and sharing center on one of my pc's; selected change adapter settings. I see the network . Its displayed as "local area connection" next line it displays network 4. And the next line my network card model is shown. If i right click, select rename. What is showing that can be renamed is local area connection. I want to change "network 4" to banker (which is was prior to changing my router). How do i do this?

Network Xp With 7

I get my new windows 7 laptop to recognize two other xp computers on the network. I have tried following the common workgroup advice, setting security to allow access and basic windows trouble shooting suggestions, but nothing seems to work. Sometimes all computers appear in the network window, but when i click on them to access, win 7 tells me it can't find them. Other times the xp computers don't even appear in the network window (seems to be random without me making any changes).

Is there any easy to follow instructions to get xp and 7 to network and give me the ability to share files and printers? I've tried doing this with w7 pc attached through wireless and hard wired network. Still had no luck. Can anyone help?

Network Drive

I have a home network with 3 computers running windows xp, a linksys router, and an older western digital my book world hooked to the router. Everything has been working perfectly for about a year. When i added a new computer running windows 7 (64-bit), i can access the my book world from the new computer using windows explorer. However, after some time (usually less than 20 minutes), the my book world freezes and won't respond to any of the computers. I realize that windows 7 is not supported on this drive. I am hoping to discover what to shut off in windows 7 to keep it from freezing the drive.

I've tried plugging the internet cable directly to the laptop and internet explorer still don't work. Home Network

I was connected to a home network by ethernet cable that worked fine. I purchased a new computer with windows 7 for my main computer and am now using my ex-main computer as the second computer in the network which has windows xp as the os. I connected the ethernet cable but cannot make a connection or be recognized by my new computer. The connection goes to a westtell router.
On the my ex-main computer i get a "dial up connection" message box. I have tired to re-progam the network and used the in computer repair and diagnostic tools. Internet works fine on the new computer.

Have networked a new windows 7 system to linux.network looks good, but when trying to share files i get a prompt for a network password. When setting up, the software generated a ten digit network password. The system now does not recognize the password it generated. If i want one i will slot it in myself surely. Am not a regular windows user and i now remember why!

Network Issues

Home network includes 3 pc's, 1 desktop (hard wired; windows7 home prem 32), laptop (wireless, vista home prem 32) and 1 laptop (wireless, windows 7 starter 32). All pc's are set to private-home.

When i go to network & sharing on my laptops. And click map network. It never shows all the powered on devices. For instance, when i map from the laptop's it shows "the following discovered devices cannot be placed in the map. Click here to see all other devices. " My desktop appears under this. When i click see all other devices it shows the desktop.

Why don't i see my powered on pc's in mapping. What setting must i change, what must i do. All pc's have network discovery on, as well as file sharing on.
