Save Dialog And Save As Boxes Appear Empty In Programs

Save dialog and save as dialog boxes appear empty in multiple programs. I cant save my work. I click 'save' or 'save as' in dbdesigner4, srcedit, and other programs, and the dialog is empty. The 'favorites', 'ftp', and 'file format' options show up, and the save and cancel buttons at the bottom, but nothing else. I cannot choose a destination directory, name the file to be saved, choose the file type, and when i click save, nothing happens.

Default Save To Location Reg Key / Save As Location To My Documents

Can someone please tell me the reg key that controls where non office documents get saved to by default when you click save. For most things it defaults to my documents, but what controls that. I am not referring to the places bar, rather the location that comes up when the save as dialog box appears. Currently i have users who when they go to save a copy of a pdf or create one using cutepdf writer it is defaulting to a network location that we'd rather they not save to. I want that save as location to be my documents. If i manually navigate to my documents and save and then attempt to save other pdf docs they default to my docs so i know something has to be keeping track of the change. Can someone help?Os is windows 2003 server and we have a citrix environment if that makes any difference.

Should I Save Documents As Docx?

In light of the lawsuit that microsoft seems to have settled with the canadian company, it is unclear to me if i should continue saving documents in word 2007 as docx or even i will be able to use the docxs i have already saved. I am concerned because i just came across something on the web [quoting]

'the ruling means microsoft can't sell versions of word that can open documents saved in the .xml, .docx, or .docm formats that contain custom xml. Those formats were at the heart of the patent dispute.docx is the default format for the most current version of word, which is included in microsoft office 2007. Custom xml is used by businesses to link their corporate data to word documents'

I gather that since i don't have any corporate data which i knowingly link to my documents, i should be ok. But, i wish someone could explain this.

I like word 2007, and appreciate its advantages; indeed, i have come to appreciate the ribbon. (And docx does have it advantages over.doc in that the files are considerably smaller)

Save Target As Issue

From time to time i would like to be able to save pictures or mp3's, but the "save target as" feature is dull. What setting do i change to enable that "save target as" feature?

I can left-click on the link, but it will be opened directly by it's default program. If it's an mp3, i don't want to have to hunt for it on my hard drive. Ie8 is already optimized. I've already tried deleting everything in the browsing history. I've tried defaulting everything in the general, security, privacy, and advanced tabs. What's next to try?

Save As File Locations

Often when saving a file, a window pops up with several, what appear to be random, file locations listing where the file can be saved. Some of the locations are actually internet sights. I, always want to save the files to a folder on the hard drive of my computer, usually in the documents folder or a sub-folder. The list of available locations is getting longer and it's hard to find the documents folder in this list. How can i delete all the locations, especially the internet locations, and keep this drop down list manageable?

Cannot Save Properties Of Folders

I create a folder, call it test, on my desktop and click on "organize" and then "layout" and turn off the "navigation pane" this is the way i want this folder to appear. I then close the folder. If i re-open it right away it looks as i left it. However, now i click on "windows explorer" and it does not have a "navigation pane" which it needs, so i click on "organize" then "layout" and then "navigation pane". I finish with "windows explorer" and close it and go back to my "test" folder and lo and behold it has a "navigation pane". Shouldn't i be able to maintain different appearances for different folders and applications?

Cannot Save Pdfs From Some Websites

I have windows 7 home premium, internet explore 8 and adobe reader 9. 3. I have found that when i get a pdf from a website and the url ends in .pdf i have no problems viewing or saving it. However, it the url doesn't end in pdf, adobe reader loads and properly displays the pdf but when i click the save button to save a copy, nothing happens. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any ideas on how to correct it? I'm pretty sure that i am up to date on all versions. This is only a problem on my new computer with windows 7. I can still go to the sites on my vista laptop and save copies.

Two Open / Save Dialogs

Windows 7 appears to have 2 different open/save dialog boxes. One simply has a few icons on the left (recent places, desktop, libraries, computer, network). The other has the complete file system, including favorites folders, on the left. Is there some reason there are 2 of these?  Is there any way to set windows to always use the more complete dialog box, or is this something hard-coded into the program i'm using at the time? If it's the latter, then i have a suggestion for sp1 - get rid of the limited dialog box so windows 7 will have a more useful and consistent interface.

Error - Do Not Have Permission To Save To That Folder

When i download files and try to save them to my folders in 'd' drive, i get an error that says i do not have permission to save to that folder. I was a vista user and created these files and folders on 'd' drive. When vista crashed, i began using win7rc for many months and had no problems accessing the folders and files on 'd' drive. Yesterday i installed rtm. Now when i download files and try to save them to my folders in 'd' drive, i get an error that says i do not have permission to save to that folder. I am the only user and am an administrator.

I used the same user name on the install of rtm that i had in rc. I did change the computer name during the install of rtm. How can i regain control of my folders. I do not have any trouble reading the files in the folders. I have set up my libraries the same as all user files are in 'd' drive.

Save As To A Usb Thumb Drive

My usb thumb drive is not cooperating. I can drag (or send) a file to it from the desktop if i "provide administrator permission to copy to this folder. " I can create a new file on the thumb drive. I can even open and edit the new txt file - but "access is denied" if i try to save the file (to its original name and place).

Some applications will save to the thumb drive with an odd message, but the real trouble is an application that flat out refuses to save to the thumb drive. Wordpad says "you don't have permission to save in this location.contact the administrator to obtain permission. "

How to fix the thumb drives?

Unable To Save Driver Downloads

I was running vista and my hard drive stopped working and would not repair. I replaced the hard drive and took the opportunity to upgrade with a full install of windows 7. I have a sony vaio media centre pc vgxtp3z/b and went to sony website to download the original drivers. I got as far as the chipset and graphics but none of the other drivers will save. After a while of trying to download, the system says the file could not be saved as unable to read source file'. This has also affected other downloads i have tried. For example the same happens when i try and download itunes.

I would be grateful if anyone could tell me why this is happening and how i can fix it as i seem only to be able to do some thing on my pc now.

Cannot Save To C Drive After Windows Update

I have windows 7 and as of yesterday after a windows update i cannot save files to my c drive. I can copy and paste files from an external drive to my c drive but if i try to save something to my c drive from word, paint, etc it says "a required privilege is not held by the client" and if i try to save to a folder within the c drive i get the error "you don't have permission to save in this location.contact the administrator to obtain permission. "

I have not changed any permissions and i have double checked that the permissions are correct. I have also tried to take ownership of the drive and it was successful but that did not resolve the issue. I can save to my documents but not the c drive or any of my personal folders within it. Also, system restore is not an option as every time i try to do system restore it tells me that it has not completed successfully.

Any ideas what could be causing this issue?

Word Document Save Issue

We recently purchased a windows 7 system and transferred all of our word 2003 documents. I am able to access and edit all of them when they are saved on the desktop or in my documents folder. But, when i open the files that are saved on my "c" drive, the window name has "read-only" in it and i can't go in to edit them. I know this is probably a security setting somewhere (either in the word program or on my "c" drive). But i can't find it.

Cannot Save Changes On Live Movie Maker

I have windows movie maker. When i save a movie and name it, and try to close out the window, it asks me if i want to save changes. I can't 'not' save changes, but when i do, and rename, somehow, several videos go into one video. I save, then name and when i try to close out, it has that pop up asking me if i want to save changes. If i cancel or say no, it comes back, so i change. Does someone understand what i'm doing wrong?

Unable To Save Movies To Laptop

I have been trying to transfer some info from my panasonic vdr_d160 camcorder. At first i tried via usb, although the laptop recognized that there was a device windows media player wouldn't allow me to view or tnfr. I have now inserted the disk after formatting it in the camcorder. I can see and view the videos however i want to copy these onto the play lists so i can burn scenes to dvd later and it wont allow me.

Is there any other way i can transfer data from the dvd disk so i can use this later for burning to dvd? I'm very new at this.

Ok i have now figured out to connect the camcorder via the usb, go into windows movie maker and select 'import from device'. Now i've done this but it seems that out of the 1hr video i imputed i have about 30 secs of video in the movie maker. It seems to have forgotten most of it and it took longer to import than the video there. This is getting really frustrating as i am hoping to make a video of my late grandfather for my grandmother and the scene's i seem to have lost are the ones featuring him!

Dual Monitor, Unable To Save Error

I have had windows 7 installed on my computer for a few months. I use a hp pavioion zd8000 laptop. I also have a lg w2242to flatscreen monitor. In the past, extending my monitor was easy and worked just as described for windows 7. Recently i detached my laptop to go to a meeting. When i returned i hooked up my monitor and i now get an "unable to save" message when i try to extend my monitor. I can use one or the other monitor, but not both.

I have uninstalled the monitor driver and tried system restore with no success. Is there something that can be done so that both monitors can be functional at the same time again.

My graphics card is an ati readon x600 which has worked fine with the two monitors under xp and for a few months under win7. I did uninstall the driver for the graphics card too and reinstalled, but that did not help.

Ie8 - Save Windows Authentication Password

First off, this is not the same as the standard "ie8 won't save form passwords" problem; this is solely related to windows authentication and i've already seen the thread at http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/internetexplorer/thread/51e22f43-1f31-4fc6-a80e-6e9633341795

I log into my machine with an account on domain a, but access a moss 2007 site that uses an account on domain b. Everytime i access the sp site i get prompted for username and password (though it does remember the username, but not password). I've tried adding the site to trusted sites and local intranet, and i've tried all the options in "user authentication" but i can't get the password to save no matter what. This is particularly annoying because everytime i want to access a document in sp it asks me for the password yet again. Any ideas?

Bioshock 2 - Couldn't Save Game

I have a couple of simultaneous problems with bioshock 2 that i need help with. After first installing the game i received an error about not having the right disk in the drive, which it was, the problem persists but is temporarily solved by reinserting it and clicking play.

When i first started the game it wouldn't allow me to create a "games for windows live" account, it would give me a message saying there was a network problem or a problem with the site. I continued to play but realized i couldn't save my game, so i created a user account to play single player but when i started playing from the beginning, as soon as i tried to loot the first corpse it wouldn't allow me to pick up items, the game proceeded to freeze.

Now when i start the game i see the adverts for nvidia and 2k games but after that my screen goes black and i get a window saying there was a problem and would i like to look for a solution online or close the program.

I have tried to reinstall from a fresh boot with the same problem. I have also tried deleting the "c:/users/guy/app data/roaming/bioshock 2" file.

My system specs are: intel core @ quad cpu q9650 @ 3. 00 ghz
                                4 gigs ram
64 bit operating sysem (windows 7)
                                Nvidia geforce gtx 275

I run all other games just fine, including fallout 3, borderlands, dead space etc.

Compatibility Troubleshooter Unable To Save Settings

I am fighting to get the program cd for my online course to work. I finally was told by their tech support that the compatibility setting should be win98 and not xp which i had on my old computer. After using this setting the program worked fine! But the next time i opened it i needed to redo the compatibility troubleshooter.

I tried to save the settings but it came up with an error: incompatible application! Is this because this is on a cd and it can't be changed? Is there anyway to do something about this. Or if i am going to have to open the compatibility troubleshooter every time where is this located so that i won't have to go into help and dig for it.

Cannot Save Text Added To .cfg Files

I'm new to windows 7 (as is practically everyone, seeing as how it's a new os. ) And i'm currently running flight simulator x deluxe edition. In the past, on my xp machine, i enjoyed adding scenery items, aircraft repaints, etc. And in order to introduce aircraft repaints, lines of text must be added to a certain . Cfg file located in one of the scenery folders. My problem is, that although i can open and view the content of the . Cfg file, when i add the new text and try to save, i get an "access denied" error message. It simply won't allow me to save!

This single action is the only thing standing in the way of me enjoying the use of the scenery file i've recently downloaded. Any advice on how to get around this annoying issue would be great! I've already browsed through administrator capabilities, and have tried opening the . Cfg file in both notepad and wordpad, but with no success.

Unable To Save File To Remote Server

My site is hosted on a server with frontpage extensions installed. As such, i can edit my html files directly on the server, but also i have been able to open excel files that are located on the server, update them and then save them directly to the server itself. That was when i used windows xp.

Within windows xp i had added my site via 'my network places' and so could open the xls files within the 'open' dialogue box in excel (2007), click on 'my network places' and then double-click my site and login to view the xls files that i want to edit.

Since i have switched to windows 7, i find that i can no longer do this. I have added my site as a 'network location' in windows 7, but if i log into my site either via windows explorer or within excel, there are no files listed - it is just blank. I can open a file in excel if i type in the exact url address for it in the 'open' dialogue box, but when i try to save it, i find that i cannot save it to the server - the error message is "document not saved".

I really don't want to go back to windows xp, so is there a way to restore the functionality that i had in xp - editing and saving excel files to my server - within windows 7?

Error Code - 0x000006d9 - Cannot Save Printer Share

Two issues - cannot save printer share with error code 0x000006d9 and machine share is not accessible from workgroup network. I am thinking these are connected problems, but here are the separate issues, first - the fundamentals:

4 pc network using work-group with two windows 7 (ultimate) and two xp. All worked well with the previous one vista/ 3 xp network. All but the windows 7 desktop behave well. The network is wired with a cable modem to a netscreen ns 5xt (hardware firewall to the outside and hub for inside), a netgear wireless access point and using (as said before) windows workgroup.

All naming remains correct on all machines, all discovery settings are in place and each has norton internet security for its local protection services. The win 7 upgrades were to the wirelessly connected vista laptop and a hard wired desktop previously running xp professional sp3.conversion of xp was assisted on the desktop by laplink pc mover upgrade assistant. All applications run seemingly well on both upgraded machines.

On the desktop - i cannot share printers. When i use 'networks and printers' from the start menu to set sharing on a printer i get the error code 0x000006d9 stating something like the configuration can't be saved. All local printing works well.

Also on the desktop - the computer name registers to all as on the network (it is discovered and mapped by each pc) but when i try to access from any other machine i get a general error message that states something like 'check your name spelling dummy'. This win 7 desktop can browse the shared folders of all on the network  and write to any.

A little added data - this unit can ping all other in the network successfully but none get a successful ping into the offending machine either with ip address or computer name (times out waiting for a response or says name cannot be found). It can ping itself successfully. It accesses the internet quite handily.

Solutions have been attempted without firewall (norton internet smart firewall - 2010), with firewall and with various permission changes. A final discovery was that the windows firewall will not enable because bfe is not able to start - error 5 - access denied (this was discovered trying to enable a possible solution due to some internet chatter that the windows firewall needed to be running to set up shared printers).

All other dependencies are running making me pause about why bfe is not (it is running on the win 7 laptop as well as is the firewall). Permissions have been checked in the registry for bfe and firewall settings (ports, allows, etc) have also been looked at with a very critical eye. Sfc was run with no problems encountered. All the ports for net drivers, win 7 networking and other shares are opened in the firewalls.

So folks - i have researched the internet and tried many of the suggested solutions to no avail. My apologies in advance if someone provides a solution and i say 'already tried that'.

Using Internal Drive To Save Files When Upgrading From Xp To Win 7

I've already searched my question countless times, and undoubtedly its possible that my situation has occurred before, but bear with me. Being not as tech-savvy as some ppl, i've been facing some dilemma in wondering if i should upgrade to xp and windows 7.

Currently, my computer has 2 hard-disk, one 50gb, the other 450gb. I run xp from the 50gb, whereas i save most of my games and installation files on my 450gb both of which are internal. Now, in the process from upgrading to xp to windows 7, its recommended that an external hard drive, but as i currently don't have one - i'm wondering if its still possible to save the various stuff i have in the 450gb internal hard-disk, even though its only used for storage?
