Which Win 7 Backup Files Can Be Deleted?

I've been using windows 7 (and vista) backup for my pcs and laptops to back-up to an external hard drive. The drive has now run out of space and i need to find some room. Windows has automatically created a number of sub-directories on the drive under the pcs' names over the last several months. Can i just delete the older folder(s) to create more space? My concern is that the back-up has been an incremental one and deleting one or more of the older folders will mean that a restore (should it ever be needed) won't work.

Files Send To Dvd-rw Drive On Network Results In Deleted Files

"send to dvd-rw drive" when the source files are on a network drive results in deleted files! Windows 7 rc 7100. Have a mapped drive to another computer. I opened the folder, right clicked on a group of .doc files. I choose "send to dvd-rw drive". Responded to the prompt of "use like usb drive" or use in a cd/dvd player by choosing the 2nd choice. Then was faced with a prompt that filename.doc is no longer in this location cancel/retry/skip. All the files were gone! Not in recycle bin of either computer.

Deleted Files By Accident

I was in recently viewed documents and they were all short cuts to my original files and pictures. I deleted one of them and checked the original location and the file was still there. So i thought these recently viewed were like cookies, so i deleted all 212 of them. Went back into my file folder and they were all gone. Recycle bin was emptied, restore item didn't work either in the recycle bin. I check in system restore but i never backed up my files. All my passwords contained in one word document.

Protect Files From Being Deleted

How do i protect files and/or folders from being deleted?  Our photos and videos are our most valuable possession and they need better protection - from us. We back up to external drives. But, we would also like to "lock" the files to ensure that when we are sorting, browsing, and copying they are not effectively deleted. How do we eliminate deleting and/or moving of files? If possible we would like to eliminate the possibility to delete while still allowing viewing, copying to project folders, tagging and rating. Is this possible?

Microsoft Update Deleted All Files

How do i figure out which update did this so i can get rid of it!Ok, here it is. I am really getting upset with microsoft and their updates! This is the second time their updates have done something to my computer! The first time i had to reformat my computer. This time or rather last night i allowed microsoft to install their updates to my computer. After they were through i turned my computer off to go to bed.

And when i turned it back on, i see a message as it is going to the log on screen that says personalizing your desk top this may take a few minutes and when i logged on to my desk top everything and i means everything that i had saved in my c drive no longer existed! I can't believe it! Do you think system restore will bring it all back? Or what else should i try!

Live Sync - Unwanted Restoration Of Deleted Files

For the last three months i have had a recurring problem of deleted files from livesync re-appearing suddenly overnight out of the blue. I can verify that they are in fact gone from the directories of all three of my syncing computers (two on xp, one on windows 7). Then suddenly out of nowhere, 24-48 hours later, i get all the files deleted since january 2010 reappearing in their original directories. It's a huge headache and takes hours & hours to delete again manually.

Defragmenting Backup Files

I use windows 7 x64 home premium. I routinely backup my files and create a system image, each on a separate drive from my primary drive with the os on it. I defrag my primary drive on a daily basis. Recently i needed to restore some files from the backup drive. All of the data restored successfully, sort of. Some of my documents and music were restored intact, but the information in the folders was out of sequence.

For example, although the entire music album/cd was restored, it was restored in two pieces with 5 songs on one piece and the other five on another in an identical folder name. I wound up with two identical folders and album artwork for patti smith instead of one. I never de-fragged the backups. But after this, i am asking if i should start?

Using Backup To Transfer Files

I have been using xp's backup/restore to keep two computers in different locations in synch. I backup all my data on computer 1 and restore it to computer 2, choosing to restore only if the files on computer 2 are older.

I'm about to buy windows 7. I understand that its backup does incremental backups, not full ones. This won't work for me, because i may have changed a file on computer 1 several days ago and done backups since then, so, as i understand it, the file won't be backed up if i haven't changed it since.

Is there a way to do full rather then incremental backups? If not, i'd welcome suggestions for ways to keep the two computers in synch.copying all the files on computer 1 and then copying them to computer 2 seems inelegant to say the least.

Reinstall Backup Files And Programs

I did a system recovery on a computer with a windows 7 home premium upgrade. Before the recovery, i was instructed to do a backup of any files and programs that i wanted to keep. I did a full backup on dual layer dvd+r's. I just finished putting them back on the computer and they are in a "system recovery files" folder on drive c. When i open the folder, it appears that everything is there. When i go to backup and restore, i have no option to access and reinstall the files and programs.

Does Backing Up Files Backup Ms Office?

So i'm pretty sure theres some kind of virus floating around on my hard drive though it doesn't show up on my antivirus or anti-spyware because my laptop has been becoming slower and slower and the screen blacks out on me or just freezes. I've done the hardware check and everything is running fine. I want to do a system recovery and start from scratch again to see if that can fix it but the problem is i am worried that i am going to lose my programs and my activated ms office which i have lost the disk to and the product key. Is there any suggestions on backing up programs for windows vista?

Is It Ok To Move Backup Files / Directories?

I'm in the midsts of doing my first backup on a new laptop running windows 7 professional. I'm backing up to an external 2tb usb drive. The backup is about halfway done, and so far has created files called frank-laptop (my pc's network name) and mediaid. Bin, as well as a directory called windowsimagebackup, in the root directory of the external drive, which the pc recognizes as e:. I'd like to do some manual backups of data from other family computers to this same usb external drive. In order to keep from mixing files up, i'd like to create a new directory on the external drive to move the windows 7 backup files/directories into (say, something like "win 7 backup files").

Can i just use windows explorer to create a new directory on the external drive, and move the visible backup files/directories there? Is there anything special i need to do to let the system know where the files will now be stored? Are there any invisible files i need to worry about? Or does windows 7 itself provide some functionality i should use to relocate the backup files?

Backup Issue - Some System Files Were Skipped

My question about backup in windows 7 is that i did a backup yesterday, windows not only saved data in libraries but it also backed up some files of already installed softwares from "program files" (which is included in system drive c:) but when i restored a software for experiment (after uninstalled it), unfortunately windows didn't back it up and gave a message "some system files were skipped because they cannot restored to original location. To restore these files, try a different location". So what does it mean? Can we not restore installed software? Also what's different between system image and windows backup?

Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Dell Datasafe Local Backup Vs Windows Backup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows 7. One of the first things i did was configure all of my back-upsettings / schedule in windows. I used the recommended windows default settings in regards to what data is being backed up and set my back-up location to an attached external wd drive. All seems to be working fine. That said this machine also has dell factory installed back up software (dell datasafe local back-up) that does it's thing and backs up data to a partition on the "c" drive. My question is if i've set up windows to back up my data to an external drive do i even need the dell datasafe local back up program at all? The concern is this program is using space on my c drive and if the c drive were to crash having the back up info on it seems kind of pointless to me anyway.

Earlier this year i bought an asus ul30a with windows 7 home premium. I purchased it and have a product key. Is it possible for me to download an install file from microsoft to a different computer (for free of course), put it on a usb (the ul30a has no optical drive), boot my asus from that and install windows, using the product key i already have? Btw i have some files that i cannot afford to lose, they are on another partition of the same hdd.

Chkdsk Deleted An Index

I'm running windows 7 professional 64. Today i turned my pc on and it ran chkdsk for no apparent reason. As far as i can tell it deleted the index for one of my music files (filename. Wav), then replaced the index for the orphaned file with filename?Wav. The file still seemed to exist on the computer, but it didn't seem to know what to do with itself. I found that the file name in windows was filename[japanese character]wav, and i'd assume the japanese character i saw was there in place of a ?, As? Is one of the characters that can't be in a file name. Does anyone know what has happened or why? For the record, i can make a new file from the original audio cd, but it bothers me that this has happened at all, and i'm worried that it'll happen again and i'll lose something more important.

Login Cookies Are Being Deleted

Okay, this is a weird one! Every so often, seemingly at random, i sit down at my computer to find all my login cookies have been deleted from my favorite websites. This is a reall pain! The first thing i did to solve this was to reset my privacy settings to 'medium' from 'medium high. ' i then added every one of my favourite websites to the list of sites allowed to use cookie information. This worked for the last couple of days.

Then, i woke up this morning to find it had happened again! All my cookies had been deleted, and i had to sign in to all of my favourite websites. I've checked to see if maybe my antivirus program (avg) or anti-spyware program (adaware and spybot s&d) were responsible. Nope, neither one had done a scan in recent days. The only other possibility i could think of was that maybe there had been a power failure during the night, but that would be the first time a power failure has caused this to happen. It certainly never happened when i was running windows xp.

Nor did i get a message about improper shutdown when i first went online this morning. Everything looked the way it always looked, expect for the missing cookies! (I left the computer running all night, as i have seti at home installed, and it works on analyzing data from outer space while i sleep. ) Can someone please help me get rid of this cookie monster that keeps 'eating' my cookies?

Sticky Note Can't Be Deleted

I have a particular sticky note that seems to be stuck somewhere on my laptop which is running windows 7 home premium 64 bit edition. I can create new notes, delete all other existing notes, etc. , But this one particular note can't be opened or deleted. When i select it from a search box, a new blank note opens (rather than opening that note). A screen shot of what i mean can be viewed at http://www.Zumodrive.com/share/6xrwotnmmz. Note i crossed out the names in the memo title for anonymity reasons, but you'll see the note is stuck there from july 8th, and you'll note a new blank note which opens if i click it.

I hope i've adequately explained the problem i'm having with this screen shot. It's kind of a strange problem to describe in writing, particularly because i doubt that most people use a search box like this to view a list of their sticky notes, but rather probably just open the sticky notes to see all their notes at once. If i can provide any further details, please advise, and i'll be happy to do so. I'd greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can offer.

Media Center Albums Deleted

Within the last week, i upgraded from windows vista to windows 7. In my windows vista version of the media center, i had nearly 60 cds that i'd ripped and kept in my albums collection. This evening, i found that my windows media center shows me having 22 albums, most of them intact, a few not, and the 22nd album containing 600+ tracks. Basically all the other missing albums lumped into one. Everything appears to be correct when i access them through the media player, but completely ruined in the media center. Is there any way i can restore my original albums without deleting my whole music collection and starting from scratch?

Deleted Encrypted Bitlocker Partition

Here's the clearest description i can can up with:

Was running: seagate 320gb hd -60gb storage partition (d:) -240gb windows & everything else partition (c:) -additional 100mb "system reserved" partitions -hidden? Partitions (not sure, because i was using bitlocker) windows 7 ultimate 64-bit w/256 aes bitlocker encryption on both partitions.

It had been a while since installation, and i was receiving bsods every time i restarted/shutdown. I figured i would do my normal routine: backup all my documents from my windows partition (c:) to my storage partition (d:), delete, recreate, and format the c: partition, and reinstall windows. After installation, i could simply type my password into the d: drive and unencrypted it. I've done it this way dozens (yes, that's accurate) of times.

This time, however, when i deleted the c: partition (using the windows installation disc), all (let me dwell on that for a moment. A l l . )Of my partitions were deleted. After a few brief moments of turrets syndrome, my instincts kicked in, and i shut off all power to the drive to preserve as much as possible. No formatting was done. It simply says that i have 290ish gb of unallocated space.

Using another computer, i ordered and received a 2tb western digital hd. I removed the old hd, installed the new one, and installed windows without a hitch. I attached the old hd using another sata hookup (they are both sata). I have tried using easeus to recover the hidden storage partition (d:). I have found numerous variations of 294gb, 100mb partitions, and even found a partition with 60gb (bingo!) But it won't let me retrieve it.

So here's the bottom line: is there any way i can recover my partition, encrypted or not (i have the key), using my new hard drive and old hard drive? Gimme anything. Program names, processes, something please?

Win 7 Restore Points Deleted By Xp

I have two separate os systems (xp pro and win 7 pro) on separate hard drives. Restore points are created on both systems. No problem with xp. I have presently 20% of the 500gb drive reserved for restore points in win 7. I am only monitoring win 7 on the win 7 drive and only xp on the xp drive. No files are on the win 7 drive- only the os and programs. Win 7 works fine and keeps the restore points. However if i boot up xp pro and then boot up win 7 pro i find that all of the restore points that had been listed in win 7 have been deleted. How do i fix this problem?
