Sound Problem With 32-bit Programs On Win 7 64-bit

64bit windows 7 rc, getting sound in 64bit programs, but not from 32 bit programs. About two weeks agoi had started my computer, there were windows updates that had installed the previous night. All seemed fine, but then when i went to go play a computer game, it comes to find out there is no sound from the game. After troubleshooting the game, i determined it wasn't the game that was the problem.

When i go to the directx diagnostic tool, and go to sound the tab, there is no sound card/driver, listed. Tells me to go and install one. But! When i run the 64bit version of dxdiag it actually picks up my sound card and drivers, and tells me everything is ok, no problems detected.

So i go and check to see exactly what was updated in the "review your update history" section in windows update, and all that was updated were "definitions update for windows defender. " So i go and do a system restore, and revert my computer to a time that was two weeks ago, assuming it would fix the problem. It didn't.

I†still get sound through windows and internet explorer, just no sound when i play any game or other 32 bit application. I have a amd motherboard with realtek hd audio onboard audio card. I updated drivers through windows, no fix. I went to realtek's website, downloaded the drivers, used those to uninstall the old drivers and reinstall the new ones, no fix. I manually unstalled the old realtek drivers, and installed the new ones i downloaded from realtek's website, the problem persists.

So the conclusion i have come to is that i have a problem with directx11 itself, that it just wont recognize my 32bit side of the realtek drivers, and only the 64bit, i have searched for a directx 11 download, but can't seem to find one. So if anyone knows where i can download the directx 11 (i already tried getting it off my windows 7 rc cd, didn't work) or has any other ideas about my problem and how i can fix it.

Will 64-bit Win 7 Run 32-bit Xp Compatible Programs ?

Will 64-bit windows 7 run 32-bit xp compatible programs that are not compatible with 64-bit vista ultimate? I recently bought a new pc with vista ultimate. It's my first 64-bit system (long time xp user). I have encountered big problems with the new 64-bit vista.

Specifically, i have several programs which run on 32-bit xp, but will not run at all on 64 bit vista (vpn checkpoint client, and solidworks 2008 - both non-trivial items used constantly for work). I bought the computer never imagining that i would have problems with these programs.

In vista, the only option i've found to make these programs "work" has been virtual pc. With virtual pc, in your new vista operating system, you can set up a "virtual computer", and install an old operating system on it, where your old programs will work. Installing an old operating system within a new operating system polices the borders of common sense. Too - the programs you install on the "virtual pc" are not free to communicate with the "real" pc. So in the frustrating case of my vpn client, i only see it function in fairyland (i.e. The virtual pc).

I recall a similar issue that arose with the windows 98 transition to xp. I thought xp handled this well with its "program compatibility wizard" (as i believe it was called). Where did this function go? Will it return with w7?

Download Programs To Default Folder "program Files" 32-bit Or 64-bit

I have been confused if programs automatically download to the optimum "program files" for 32-bit or 64-bit or do i have to select which if the two program files i want it in? It seems everything has been going into the x86 file. I don't want to just move them all over to the 64-bit file if they really belong in the x86 file, but i am sure my new photoshop programs belong in the program files file yet they seen to have downloaded into the program files (x86) instead. Also, how am i to know which programs are better suited for either folder?

Update: i tried copying the photoshop file and moving it to the 64-bit folder but it won't let me do so, saying a file is in use somewhere. I do not have any files from this open; i even restarted the computer to completely close anything that might be open and i get the same message. Is this maybe because it does not belong in the program files folder for 64-bit programs? Any other hints on how i can move this program, along with adobe premiere elements (for making videos) that gives me the same message? I have been told these programs would work better running as 64-bit programs so that is why i want to move them.

Win 7 64-bit Doesn't Distinguish Between Ie8 64-bit And Ie8 32-bit

Windows 7 64bit doesn't distinguish between ie8 64 bit and ie8 32 bit when attempting to set a default browser using the control panel default programs 'associate' utility. My new windows 7 64 bit pc (luv that i7 920 intel cpu) came installed with both ie8-64 bit and ie8-32 bit (nothing more need be said regarding the absurdity of having to deal with this in the first place - i†should have gone with the imac).

Anyway, ie64 bit lacks the flash player cuz adobe hasn't released a 64 bit version yet, per their website. So i can't use ie64 with xm online music stream (et al). Ie32, on the other hand, supports flash player, but won't successfully link to various embedded hypertext links, such as those embedded in an email. My initial solution was to use firefox, which served me well until an application from a local vendor will only work with internet explorer. Sigh.

I've used†windows since version 2 back in the 1980s, have become stoic, and can emotionally cope†with having to use 3 browsers to get the†job done.

However, just for fun, my current burning question is, with two different versions of ie8 (64 bit and 32 bit) installed into windows 7, why doesn't the control panel default applications utility seem to aware of the fact that there are indeed two different versions installed? It lists firefox and internet explorer, but†does not differentiate between the two flavors of ie. My goal was to set ie8 64 bit as the default browser temporarily to accommodate the vendor's application.

Fyi, by setting the default, i refer to: control panel | default programs | associate a file type or protocol with a program. Then scroll down to 'http'†and†click on the change program button. So in my case, firefox and only one instance of internet explorer, with no bit distinction, display as selection options.

Xp Mode Is 64-bit Or 32-bit In Win 7 64-bit

I am planning on purchasing win 7 pro & installing the 64-bit version. I intend to make use of the "xp mode" feature if i can install 32-bit printer drivers within the xp mode, as my photo printers have no 64-bit drivers. I currently edit my photography on a win xp pro 64-bit pc, which is networked to a win xp pro 32-bitpc in order to print images. I need to know if "xp mode" is 32-bit - even when installed with the 64-bit version of win 7 pro. I want to be able to convert/edit my photos in win 7 64-bit, then print these images using "xp mode" via the 32-bit driversi intend to installin xp mode- all from the same pc. Is this do-able?

No Sound Randomly Win 7 64-bit

I have no audio in my computer. No sound from anywhere let it be winamp, windows media player, youtube, system sounds, etc.

-Sound is not muted.
-Rebooting has not fixed the issue.
-I installed and reinstalled the realtek hd audio driver.
-System restore didn't fix the problem.

There was an error screen one time when i tried shutting down my computer, but it disappeared before i could see what it said and on the next boot up, there was no sound.

Everything in the computer says that the driver and sound is working. When i try to configure the speakers, it just says "failed to play test tone. "

Someone told me to enter the bios to check for audio. Not too sure how to enter it. When i press f2 to attempt to enter the bios, it just takes me to setup and there is no option to check for audio devices or anything. It just tells me things about booting up.

I have a sony vgn-fw510f/b. Realtek soundcard.

No Sound Dell Studio 1557 64-bit

No sounds on windows 7. I have a dell studio 1557 (64-bit) with windows 7 installed when i bought it last november. I used it without any problems until about february, when suddenly sound started not to work at all. Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem but running even a simple program (such as sound recorder or playing a wmv file using windows player) wouldn't work. I tried system restore as a last resort and it fixed the problem. For a while. It reappeared again after some time, and i fixed it again that way, and again and again. So i am wondering if this has any easy fix, and whether any programs might have compatibility issues and cause this?

Intel D955xbk Sound Driver For 64-bit

Ive recently re-installed windows 7 64-bit on my home computer which i use as a media center. Im having a problem with the drivers from intels site for the on-board sound for the d955xbk motherboard. I have to use the vista 64-bit driver and then specifically add the driver via the device drivers update section. The problem is that this all works fine until i exit media center then try and reload it. It hangs on a black blank screen as if media center is trying to process something but it never does.

When i try to force a shut down it then hangs on playing windows shut down sound. It seems the sound driver is reverting back to an old installed driver each time i shut media center down. So i have to go into device manger uninstall the present driver (ticking the completely remove the driver) then go through the install as above for the vista 64-bit driver. This is all getting a pain unistalled the sound driver all the time. Any help people or do i need to face that my motherboard is not supported by windows 7 64-bit drivers?

Xp Programs Work With Win7 64-bit ?

How To Run 16-bit Programs On Win 7?

I have to be able to run a 16 bit cad program. I had vista and replaced it with xp. Got w7 and it is much better than vista but still can't get the program to run on it. Virtual pc will run the program but access to the physical drive is so slow that it is not acceptable. For instance to run a routine (which is why i have to have the 16 bit program) takes 12 seconds in xp and 1min 20 sec on w7 via virtual pc.

Is there a way to do this?
Is ms going to address this if not?
Or do i dump w7 and stay with xp?

Programs Buggy With Win7 64-bit

I purchased and installed the 64 bit version just after the official release. I kept my xp install for several older software titles and had a very smooth dual-boot install experience. After running win7 64 for several months now i conclude, at least with the 64 bit version, that certain software titles have bugs that may or may not be microsoft's fault. I find this most with adobe titles but ms and others have issues as well. After a chat with a friend of mine who is a lead engineer for micron, he agreed and has come to the same conclusion. Just because ms says itís compatible doesn't mean you wonít have problems!

Previously iíve always waited until the Ďsp1í version of a new os came out- i jumped this time and am glad i chose the dual-boot option. But. Iím primarily win7 user now and really enjoy the better performance, usability and security over what i get from the xp side. Xp is good and at this point, about as solid and un-buggy as it gets. Win 7 will go through its growing pains until the kinks are worked out but all-in-all a great upgrade. My advice: if your machine is used in a mission critical role, dual-boot until the bugs are worked out. Also, learn to run msconfig to block programs at startup. This has solved a few issues for me as well as improving startup times.

64-bit Win 7 Problem With Install Programs

Inin 64 bit windows 7, i've only been able to install 3 of my probably 20 programs i've used before, why is this? Ive tried 64 bit versions designed for windows 7 and tried compatibility modes. I really†don't†have much to say. Ive got 64 bit, and ive tried just about everything i can. A couple examples of what i cant install that are designed to work for this: itunes, logitech g19 keyboard drivers, alex feinmans iso recorder.

Also one of my cd drives wont let me do anything, like install stiff from a disk or copy a cd, if theres encryption at all. My other cd drive does. Skype doesn't work, nor ventrillo. Steam and all its games run so far, and crysis works but its editing tools don't, and there designed only for 64 bit. I do like windows 7 and i do find that its faster, but whats the point in speed if i cant run anything?

Ati Radeon Sapphire 5770 - Win 7 64-bit Asks For 32-bit Drivers

Multi-boot System Win 7 64-bit & Vista 32-bit On One Hard Drive

Multi-boot system windows 7 (64-bit) & vista (32-bit) on one hard drive - do i need two hard drives?I have an existing windows vista ultimate (32-bit) system installed on a 500gb sata hard drive, partitioned into 2 partitions (c: and d:). I would like to make the system multi-boot so that i can back-track to vista if i have a problem with win7.

One issue here is that i plan on multi-booting vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit on the same hard drive without touching the d: partition of the hard drive. I don't know if this is possible, but i'm interested to see if it is.

I've done some research and have found that win7 has many compatibility modes, so maybe i don't need to worry about keeping an installation of vista on my system? I just don't want to be "caught with my pants down" if something were to go wrong with win7, like if one of my programs was incompatible or something along those lines.

If i can't multi-boot vista 32-bit and win7 64-bit from the same hard drive, can i do it with 2 hard drives having one os on each hard drive? Or, am i being much too paranoid about this and should i trust microsoft on this one that win7 will not have any large compatibility issues with my most used programs?

For reference, here are some of my most used programs: firefox 3. 5, steam, adobe photoshop (versions 7. 0 and cs3), ie tester (for web development), winamp, trillian (an im and irc program), itunes, skype, mozilla thunderbird (for e-mail), and fraps (in-game video recording software).

I know that this is a lot all at once, but does anyone see any foreseen compatibility issues with any of these programs and win7 64-bit ? I'm also worried about the compatibility of some of my drivers with win7 64-bit, but i've heard that there have been leaps and bounds made with driver compatibility on win7 64-bit (as compared to the mess it was with xp 64-bit). Is this true?

Printer Sharing - 64-bit Win 7 And 32-bit Xp In Remote Desktop Session

Printer sharing - 64 bit windows 7 and 32 bit windows xp in a remote desktop session. Windows 7 machine with a local ricoh / aficio 1045 b & w multifunction printer attached. Works fine, uses 64 bit printer driver. This computer connects to a windows xp machine (32 bit) using remote desktop session (terminal services).

On the xp machine, i installed the 64 bit printer driver via printers and faxes -> server properties - drivers - add driver. I can see the driver there, successfully installed (have rebooted, etc). Despite this, the printer will still not show up when rd session is run. In event viewer, i can see there's an issue with it finding the correct driver.

I've used the terminal server printer redirection tool in the past to solve these problems (tspdrw.exe) which works great. The correct 64 bit driver is not listed as a choice when scrolling through options to reassign the driver. Hopefully that is clear, not sure what i am missing.
