Access Old My Documents Files

How do i access old 'my documents' files which were located on separate drives under vista with my new windows 7 installation. My vista (32bit) installation was on drive c with photo's located on drive d which was the same physical drive. Separately, i had a second hard drive with all other 'documents' on it, including word & excel files plus savegames etc which were set up by the system. I had pointed 'my documents' to this drive under vista.

I upgraded (though it was a fresh install) to windows 7 (64bit) and in explorer i can see these drives, and they show as loaded with files (100gb out of 150gb used) but a double-click on the drive shows an empty folder. The installation process was clean and i had no problems or errors.

I know that this is how it used to be seen in explorer under vista but the data seems to be completely inaccessible under windows 7. I have tried pointing to it from within libraries. The computer name both before and after the os change was the same and i have used the same password because i thought that might help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cannot Access Documents And Setting Folder

I recently installed windows 7 rc as a dual boot with xp. Unfortunately, in windows 7, not only can i not access my documents and setting folder (win7 partition), but nothing through the 'user' folder, either. I created a new account, and had the same trouble. I've tried changing permissions through the tabs and dialogs, including in safe mode, and just as it seems it's getting ready to write the new permissions, it pops up yet another 'access denied' dialog. I've gone through windows update and all is up to date.

Should i be concerned, or is this a 'windows 7 rc' quirk?  How will it affect applications i might want to install to "try out"?

Files Missing From My Documents Folder

I had set my wife up as a user on my windows 7 pro laptop. She created and saved many files and folders in her my documents folder. Then my niece needed to use the laptop for her college nursing courses because she didn't have microsoft office 2007 on her personal computer at home, so i added her as a user and i also password protected my wifes files by adding a password to her profile. Fter i got the laptop back from my niece i removed the password from my wife's profile. Now, when she opens her my documents folder, all of the files and folders she had saved are missing. Where did they go? And, how can i get them back?

Missing Files / Documents In Win 7

My sister bought a brand new computer with windows 7 pre-installed less than three days ago. That night we brought it home and put all of her files on the computer, and stored them in separate folders in 'documents' folder (not the preset videos, music, pictures folders. )

The next day she got an error-type message saying that the computer was low on memory and it had to reboot. When the computer rebooted, all of her files were missing. Even applications that were in the 'downloads' folder. But when i looked in the 'computer' folder, it still showed that the os (c:) drive held 18. 5gb (out of 218gb). So i knew that it was still on the computer. I looked in the os (c:) drive > users > into her user folder and into 'documents and i found her files.

Today, she had the same problem, but when i tried to use the same method to find her files for her again, they aren't there. But the os (c:) drive still shows that its holding 18. 5gb of memory. Where should i look to find the missing files, and what could be causing this to happen?

Access Blocked To Files

I recently set up my new laptop with windows 7 ultimate and transferred files from my old xp laptop. I'm finding several folders that tell me "access denied". I've tried to upgrade the access through file properties>security but often the permission upgrade boxes are greyed out so i can't even improve the security. It seems that a lot of the "denied" files are under my user name.

The workaround this is to slap a blocked file from my old laptop onto a usb key and then saved it a public user on my computer but what a hassle and how inefficient.

Any ideas on how to resolve my security issues?

Lost Access To Files As Administrator

I was setting up my new desktop, including setting permissions for folders i did not want my children to have access to. The files were/are on my external hard drive. I am the owner/administrator, yet when i went to limit other users, i lost access to the entire folder. I cannot open it or see its contents and cannot change the permissions back to default settings. There are many gigs of data that i need. How can i access these files/folders?

Windows 7 seems to be pretty bitchy even to the owner/administrator. It makes no sense that any after market files/folders should ever be restricted to the owner/administrator.

Cannot Gain Access To Files As Administrator

I can not gain access to my files despite being the administrator. When i got this new laptop, i transfered my files from xp on my old computer, to this 7. Now i'm told i'm denied access to the files i transfered, despite being the sole administrator on my computer. I tried disabling the uac as someone suggested elsewhere, but i am still denied access. My old computer is dead, and these are the only copies of the files. How can i get them?

Also, the product key that is on my laptop for this version of windows 7 is not accepted when i try to get support from windows, and when i try the "let windows get your serial number", it just says i've entered the wrong number. So i can't get direct support for a windows 7 program that is only 1 month old. If it's not the "product key" and not either of the other 2 sets of numbers, then where's the stupid serial number?

Cannot Access Registry Or .exe Files

Can't access registry or .exe fies so i got a new computer, it has windows  and runs on a 64-bit operating system. I had downloaded and played a game on my other computer, and the client worked just fine. On this computer, i downloaded the same client, from the exact same site, and for some reason i couldn't open, drag, or access the .exe file from my downloads. So i looked into it and over time realized that some .exe files would open while others wouldn't. I went in the registry and changed the value of both options in the exe folder without realizing that i should've just edited the default.

So to get to the point, i can't access any .exe files, on top of having absolutely no access to the registry. I can manage to et on the internet directly, but no programs or downloads will open, or can't access the registry ether. I've tried every trick in the book, booting in safe mode with command prompts, command prompts in general, and none of them seem to work. So without further adue, i'm screwed. Any help or suggestions?Oh and i've managed to have every single .exe file try and start with regedit, reading that if you tried to open regedit with itself it would work. Absolutely not. And now i'm in an even deeper rut. Nd changing it to regedit.com doesn't work either.

My own personal computer at home, just bought a new sony vaio with win7 home and photoshop hangs when trying to open a picture to edit. I find it very strange that different computer types, different os types and different programs, all have the same issue. Only thing in common. Windows 7. Any ideas?

Access Denied - Cannot Access The Outlook.ost File

We have installed windows 7 on a new machine. The user is a domain administrator and has full rights. When we try to open outlook, it says that it cannot access the outlook. Ost file and then freezes. We have moved the uac slider all the way to don't notify, granted explicit ownership to the c: users folder, given machine specific administrator rights to the user and the problem still persists.

When we log in as the hidden administrator though, everything works just fine for the same users exchange login. The user cannot even delete files on the network that belong to the user! Everything works fine when he logs in from another machine running xp. What are we missing here?

Open Documents In Ie

Recently i have noticed that word and excel documents accessed via ie (7 or 8) do not open in their own application. Instead, they open in what appears to be half browser/half application. Once the document is saved, it is then shown in its native application. This is a change to the way documents used to open in ie, and i was wondering why this change was made.

I know it is browser related because i have tested it on several sites with the same results, but documents opened in firefox open in their native applications. I know this is going to cause a problem with some of my customers who are not very computer literate. Is there a setting that can be changed to avoid this?

Getting My Recent Documents

How to get "my recent documents" in windows 7? I need "my recent docs". I purchased win7pro because i assumed it was created with professionals in mind. People who rely on their computer for their lively hood rely on "my recent docs" for a million things. The "recent items" function does not seem able to locate any but the last version. When an earlier version is shown in he jump folder, windows can't find it. I need to know what i did yesterday, last week, and in 2002. Xp does that, (pro and home b. T. W. ). Please tell me there is a setting some place that i just haven't found. Everyone in my field relies heavily on "my recent docs". I can't believe it is gone.

My Documents Shortcut Does Not Work

I am in a school environment where we do not allow students to access the c drive. We also redirect students my documents¯ folder to a network file storage server. We are in the process of converting to windows 7 and found that when a student tries to access their my documents¯ from their desktop they get an access denied message.

We would like to keep students from accessing the c drive but allow them the use of the desktop short cut for their my documents¯. We are pretty sure this is due to the fact that the my documents¯ folder is now a subfolder on the desktop. Is there a simple fix to allow students access only to their my documents¯ folder?

Moving My Documents Folder

Shortly after installing win 7 64 i moved "my documents" by some simple method i don't now recall (it was 6 months ago). I need to correct the situation now. Sometimes i have software installs fail because they are looking for h:my documents and it no longer exists. I have also removed hard drives since then. I also want to setup for a ssd drive keep the os and program folders on c: but data on a different drive. I still have c:usersbmacdmy documents right click doesn't show the location and move option. Permissions shows i have full control and i am an administrator on the system.

My registry shows entries like this for my documents personal reg_expand_sz h:my documents bruce but like this for others my pictures reg_expand_sz%userprofile%pictures i no longer have an h: drive but have all my data stored on f: in the root. Can i search and replace my registry and replace h:my documents bruce with f:?

Infinite Documents Folders

I have what seems like an infinite chain of documents folders, one inside of another. Forever. And ever. I've deleted probably a hundred of them. Where did they come from and why can't i delete all of them at once? Had this problem in vista but the folders weren't infinite, they just existed and wouldn't let me open them. Now that i have 7 they have become infinite. Can anyone help me?

Because my friend tried working on it and he named the files he moved them to "stuff you need to sort and delete" and "needs to die. " He also did it because it annoyed him severely.

I have tried deleting the top most folder, but i get a "source path too long" error message. "The source file name(s) are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter name(s) before attempting this operation. "

I don't really understand why or how they got created, or what's in the last one (if there is one!). How can i just delete all of them? Forever?

Should I Save Documents As Docx?

In light of the lawsuit that microsoft seems to have settled with the canadian company, it is unclear to me if i should continue saving documents in word 2007 as docx or even i will be able to use the docxs i have already saved. I am concerned because i just came across something on the web [quoting]

'the ruling means microsoft can't sell versions of word that can open documents saved in the .xml, .docx, or .docm formats that contain custom xml. Those formats were at the heart of the patent dispute.docx is the default format for the most current version of word, which is included in microsoft office 2007. Custom xml is used by businesses to link their corporate data to word documents'

I gather that since i don't have any corporate data which i knowingly link to my documents, i should be ok. But, i wish someone could explain this.

I like word 2007, and appreciate its advantages; indeed, i have come to appreciate the ribbon. (And docx does have it advantages over.doc in that the files are considerably smaller)

Redirect My Documents Folder

I did as i found to redirect my documents to an alternate location on my drive "c" and something strange happened ( windows 7 home premium) went to usersyourloginnamedocuments/properties/location tab/move and the chose a target folder "esteban" which i had created before.

Now the strange stuff, the folder "esteban"was replaced by "my documents" in the new location and is now not visible. Basically what win 7 did is not only point to the new folder but replace it.
This behavior i did not see in win xp in which the folder would remain even though my documents pointed to it.

I tried to backtrack and redo everything. I restored the default location of the my documents folder and now i noticed that the new folder that was created before in "c"is still there and now it can't be erased, so back to scratch. I'd appreciate your comments.

My Documents Is Hidden In Another Folder

In vista they changed things so i couldn't find my documents without opening another folder called "documents. " In windows 7 it's now been renamed "my documents" but that's still hidden in another folder. I'm having trouble finding things quickly because of all these "improvements. " What is everyone doing to quickly find things in the "my documents" folder? It doesn't look like i can even change the icon to something that'll stand out for me.

Multiple My Documents Folders

I have just upgraded from windows vista to windows 7, i note tha there are two my-documents folders in the c:/users/myname/. One of the two contains the files that i want and is accessible in both this folder and the libraries/documents folder. The second my documents folder is locked and even tho i am the only user and have full administrator privileges i can not see whats in it.

I checked the properties of the folder in "libraries/documents to see if it matched either or both folders under users. It didn't show for one of the folders so i couldn't compare them to determine which contained my files. One of the two folders is not necessary but i don't know which to delete and if its the one i can't access, how do i delete it?

My Documents Renamed View Libraries

This is a windows 7 question -ok - this is a little complicated. I have a windows 2003 server in a domain environment. This server houses my users public directories. So under my "users" directory - bob smith has a "bsmith" directory and jane doe has a "jdoe" directory and so on. My users local "my documents" folders are mapped to their respective directory on the server. So if they click on their my documents folder - they are actually looking at their folder on the server. All of my users have a folder with their name and everyone can see and modify each others files.

(This is by design) now that i am bringing some windows 7 machines online - those folders are being renamed to "my documents". They aren't actually renamed - its just a view. Only my windows 7 users folders are being renamed and only my windows 7 users see the renamed folders as "my documents" so now - if i have 10 windows 7 users - and i go to my "users" directory on the server. I would normally see a folder for each person.

But now i see 10 folders that say "my documents" and the non windows 7 users still have their names listed normally. So i now have no idea which of these 10 my document folders is bob smiths. This only looks this way on a windows 7 machines. If i look in the "users" directory from an xp machine - they look normal. So this tells me this is some sort of windows 7 "view" or library. I need to turn this view off. Any ideas?

Ie8 - Issue With Documents And Links

We have upgraded our systems from ie 6 to ie8. This has been done by the use of wsus server and all went fine except :a certain config / type of systems have the following issues :- when opening documents(word excel pdf) , they are opened in browser. This works fine , except that the menu-bar suddenly looses the "file" option. This causes an issue for printing documents in word and excel , as also the main-bar is missing in browser.

- Right mouse click on links is missing the open in new tab feature. This is for all user on the given computer and all standard fixes i could find for the link issue have been tried(registering the dll's as well as resetting ie8). I hope to find some help in this(also rebuilding a pc with the same basic image seems to not reproduce the issue for some reason. )

Excel Documents Keep Moving On Desktop

I am running windows 7 64-bit, all recent updates installed, but this will probably work on most windows 7 machines. I do not have an english version of windows, but i'll try to explain reproduction. I like my desktop icons to be organized, so i do not use auto arrange. I group icons in my own specific way. The left side of my screen is almost empty. My problem is that when i edit an excel document that resides on the desktop, the icon moves to the default (left side) location of the screen. Here's how:

1. On your desktop, turn off auto arrange. (Right click on desktop -> menu "view" -> item "auto arrange")

2. On your desktop right click somewhere on the right side of the screen and create a new excel document. (Right click on desktop -> menu "new" -> item "microsoft excel-document").

3. Make sure the new document is not on the default location (left side) of the screen. If it is, goto 1 or try to drag it to the right side of the screen.

4. Open the excel document you just created, and save it (with or without editing). (Saving with ctrl+s, so not "saving as. ").

5. View your desktop again by closing or minimizing the excel document. The icon has moved to the default icon location. I have tried this with other documents, but only excel documents seem to be moving.
