Win 7 Reports Wrong Free Space On Hard Drive

I have 4 partitions set up on my hard drive. 1st partition has my windows 7 installation and some other microsoft products such as the office suit and visual studio and such.

2nd partition is empty and i'm not using it right now
3rd partition i have encrypted with the bitlock and use it for important files
4th partition i use for everything else. This partition is 219 gb in size. I have movie files, music, pictures, software iso's and the program files folder with lots of software.

Total all that data is exactly 48. T gb. I got this number in two different ways both equaling 48. 7 gb: first i manually calculated the sizes of all the folders and then to verify i used a utility called jdiskreport which confirmed my calculation.

The problem is that windows tells me that my 4th partition is completely full and only 1. 3 gb is left when clearly that doesn't make sense. I am missing 160gb which is a large number. I looked at all possibilities: hidden files, system restore files but there's nothing there. I would like to know if anyone out there has any idea as to what's going on and how i can fix it. Absolutely any ideas are welcome.

Full D Recovery Drive Disk Space Warning

I'm having a somewhat similar problem as a previous poster but. Have a newer computer and i upgraded from vista home premium to w7 home premium . My backup d drive is full . I guess the backup has not removed former backups . Now processing is slower and i worried about a total freeze. I used the disk manager and tried to add space onto my d from c but only ended up with an unallocated partition of 20g's .couldn't figure out how to add to d.

In the previous solution " press a special key combination when the computer starts, you can use the recovery partition to restore the computer to the way it was when it was new. " Would that remove windows 7(don't want to do that" or. Do i have to remove the partitions letters for the d? Would that just make it one big c drive? . Would that effect computers performance? How can i get that unallocated partition back to c . Or to d? Sorry for being so wordy but i could sure use some help.

Error Message - There Is Not Enough Free Space To Store Temporary

I'm trying to upgrade from vista home premium to windows 7 home premium and get the following error message:

"There is not enough free space to store temporary windows installation files. Try using disk cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a cd, dvd, or external hard drive. "

However, my hard drive has 91 gb free out of a total of 149 gb. I have no partitions and so this is the only hard drive that windows can be installed on. I also have 3 gb ram. Anyone have any thoughts on what i can do?

Enough Free Disk Space Issue Using Easy Transfer

Why does easy transfer say i don't have enough disk space when i'm trying to transfer 141gb to a hard drive with 585gb of available space? I just purchased an hp pavilion 6347c with windows 7 home premium. I'm trying to transfer data from my old computer with windows xp to the new machine.

Easy transfer works to the point where the actual transfer should be made, at which point i get an error message saying there is not enough disk space. I've called hp tech support, and they told me i'd have to pay for support as this is a "third party" issue.

Error - Not Enough Free Space To Store Temporary Installation Files

Not enough free space error when i have 190 gig free on drive c? When upgrading from vista hp 64 bit to win 7 hp 64 bit, following the "checking compatibility" function of the upgrade process i get the following error message:

There is not enough free space to store temporary windows installation files. Try using disk cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a cd, dvd, or external hard drive.

I have done that, moved all pics, music, uninstalled itunes and done everything the program recommended. My c drive is 286 gig and it has 190 gig of free space. Clearly, there is plenty of room. So what's up with this error message?

Excessive Space Being Taken Up On C: Drive

(b) drive not showing up after windows 7 64 bit install. Drive (c) also has less than half its capacity available after a clean install. I just "custom" installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit after running windows vista ultimate 32 bit. I followed all the defaults for the "custom" install and didnt do anything fancy, pretty much just clicked "next". Everything booted up fine but now when i go to my computer folder, only one of my internal hard drives is showing up (c). It is also showing my external hardrive - but not my second internal hard drive (b). Also, (c) has only 112 gb free of 298 gb after a clean install of windows 7. I know windows 7 cant be that big.
So:
(1) cant find second internal hardrive (b)
(2) excessive space being taken up on (c)
What gives?

Not Enough Space On Partitioned Drive

I have  a partitioned hard drive and "c" drive is only 29. 2 gb. What, if anything, can i delete in windows vista to get the required space i need to upgrade to windows 7? I have 7. 62 gb free and need another gig. I don't want to screw up vista in case of a problem with the installation and i don't want to do a clean install because i don't want to lose any programs.

I Get Drive Full Error When The Drive Is 90% Unused

Reported used space on drive c continues to climb, but no data is actually added; ultimately i get drive full error when the drive is 90% unused. I recently upgraded to windows 7 from vista home premium (64 bit each). Other than that, i don't believe there has been any hardware or software changes in months. My c drive (sata ii, ntfs format) has a capacity of 500 gb, although i don t have more than 60 gb of material on it, which is the amount reported on bootup.

However, after some usage, the hard drive "appears" to be adding data at the rate of 50 gb an hour, as if some video is being recorded to the hard drive, which it is not. In fact, if i disconnect from the internet, the reported disk usage still continues to climb. Within a day, i get a disk full error and i cannot save anything. In other words, if i right click on the drive c icon after booup, then click properties, i see that the drive will be 60 gb used, or a11% of so, but an hour later it will report drive use at 20%, or 100 gb, and an hour after that it's showing 150 gb of hard drive use, etc.

If i re-boot and then check the hard drive usage again, properties will report only the actual 60 or so gb of use, but an hour later, i'm back up to 100 gb and so on until disk full appears again and i can't save a simple word document. Ideas on what is causing this?

Unable To View Thumbnails Using Detailed View

I am unable to view thumbnails in windows explorer while i am using detailed view. I only can see them when they are extra large. I can't see them in small, not in list, not in medium, just in extra large. I hate them extra large. I want to view them in detailed view. This is what i have done so far:under folder options/view i "unchecked" the "always show icons never thumbnails".

That did not work. I did go through tons of problems regarding thumbnails in the forums, but could not find a solution to my problem. I am using windows 7 professional 64 bit. I never had a problem with thumbnails in windows xp. Now i am struggling and i want to view my thumbnails again. I just don't know what else i can do. I must be missing something in the settings; but what?

Cannot Manage Backup Space On More Than 1 Drive At A Time

Cannot manage backup space on more than 1 drive at a time; can view backups on more than 1 drive at a time. I make image and regular backups to 2 different usb drives - because you do not know when a backup drive will fail. Win7 backup and restore gui allows one to view backups on multiple drives at same time via "select another backup to restore files from".

Manage space only allows to manage space on the currently configured backup drive. Further - if modifying the configuration to select a different drive - you are forced to start a backup before you can manage space on that drive. - "Save settings and run backup" there may be little space on the drive - so i will have to either cancel the backup after started or configure a useless  small backup so that i can then manage space on the drive.

Hard Drive Space Usage Under Win7

I just upgraded to win7 (64 bit). My c drive (intel ssd) has ~75 gb space. When i click on "computer, " it says that the total free space is 25gb (i.e 75gb is used up). But the space occupied by all files/folders adds up to only ~24 gb (~21 gb of this is occupied by "windows" and "windows. Old" folders, ~2. 4 gb by "program files" and "program files (x86)", and very little by other folders/files).

How can i find out what is taking up the rest of the space? I have emptied the recycle bin and have done disk cleanup. In addition, in the advanced settings list, i made sure that "show hidden files, folders and drives" is selected. I also unchecked "hide protected operating system files. ".

Low Disk Space On Recovery (d) Drive

I just switched my dell studio 15 from windows vista to windows 7. Once i got everything set up, i started receiving an error message that reads "low disk space on recovery drive". I have already gone and changed the program files to default to the c drive by going in through the registry (?) But am not sure what else i can do. I have tried uninstalling programs, but it tells me that i don't have enough disk space to do so. I only have the following folders in my recovery partition: dell, perflogs, program files, sources, tools, users, windows. Any suggestions of what i should do?

External Hard Drive Space Discrepancy

I have a 500gb western digital external hard drive which shows i actually have a total of 465gb (i understand this). Currently it says i have 277 gb free but the files i have saved on there amount to no more then 100gb, so shouldn't it have 365gb available. Also about once a month it says there is not enough room to complete a back up even though on my c drive it shows i only have about 135gb of stuff, so i have to delete my previous back ups and start again, why is this  .

Will Upgrade Installation Require More Space On Boot Drive ?

I have a very small 32gb boot drive with vista premium installed. Will upgrade installation require more space on the boot drive? The boot drive i have is an 32gb ssd. Since ssds are so expensive i ordered this small one as a boot drive only. So will i need space available on the c drive to upgrade my windows vista premium 64-bit to windows 7 64-bit? I have a secondary hard drive as my f drive. It is 320gb and contains all my programs and games, leaving about 200 gigs left.

If space is indeed required from my c drive, is there an alternative way to upgrade?

External Usb Drive Showing As Unallocated Space

I installed windows 7 rc on a brand new pc to try it. I got it running then plugged in my wd mybook 750gb external usb drive to copy some files onto the pc. That worked fine. I then shut down the pc. When i tried to connect the drive to my xp laptop it no longer shows up as a hdd. If i look in devices it's there but showing as unallocated space in the hdd management console.

I have over 300gb of backups on that drive and will be pretty *** off if windows 7 has trashed 2 years worth of data. I'm assuming the file allocation table or something has been corrupted?

Upgrade To Win7 Wrt Hard Drive Space

I've been thinking about upgrading to windows 7 for a little while. I've been reading the system requirements (i meet all of them) but i noticed that i have to have 16gb of free space on my hard drive. My laptop is a basic (ish) spec so hdd space is at a premium. Will it always use this 16gb when everything is finished or is it just temporary.

What happens to vista? I've seen on some other forums that it keeps it installed. This is doesn't make sense - why would i want this and how could i stop it from doing this. Please bear in mind i would prefer to use an upgrade disc rather than a full copy to save money.

Hard Drive Full In Win 7

Recently i bought windows 7 home edition and upgraded my desktop and my wifes laptop. On my computer i kept my old folders from vista and did the first install selected. The only problem i had was i had to upgrade my video driver. However my wife's laptop i chose the second option and did a totally new install. Now her hard drive is in two places. C and d drive. The c drive has 230 gig free but the d drive is about full. Because of the partition now i can't put windows office on her laptop because it says not enough memory.

Does anyone know how to make this problem go away or to combine both hard drives?

Installing New Applications, The Drive Is Full

I just recently updated to windows 7, i'm trying to install new applications but won't let me because it is saying the recovery (d:) is full and is a red bar. To the left there is the (c:) drive, which is blue and has more than enough memory. I was wondering how i can fix this?

Also i looked this question up and on this forum it is saying to go to the (1)regedit option, (2)navigate to the following location hkey_local_machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrentversion and changing the programfilesdir. I do the first two parts but when it says to look for the programfilesdir. To the right, its not there.

Can someone please help?

1t External Drive Full After Scheduled Backup

I have a 1t external drive. The backup is half that & scheduled for each monday evening. 2 mondays. Full drive. Now what? Am i missing something? I would think the backup utility would do a comparison of the data on the main system and the backup and make them match each time the utility is run. If it does not work this way, how can i use the back up utility? Do i have to go in each week and remove the earlier back up manually?

Pop Up Shows Recovery Drive D Full

Recovery drive d full, i have a dell inspiron 545 laptop that came with windows vista and i upgraded it to windows 7. I just bought this computer in november and ever since i installed windows 7 i get pop-up messages every few minutes that say recovery drive d is full click here to free up space. Every time i try that, it doesn't work. I had a new hard drive g set up and also my c drive has lots of space but when i try to send folders or do anything with them, it says that i need administrator permission.

It also won't allow me to change and allowances because i need administrator permission. I have looked at other answers to the same question but these answers don't work for me. I have tried the following steps:

1. Click the start button.
2. Type diskmgmt. Msc in the search box and press enter .
3. In the disk management window, right-click the recovery partition.
4. Click change drive letter and paths.
5. Click remove. When i try this, i get two messages that stop me from being able to select remove.

The first one is from disk management and says, "some programs that rely on drive letters might not run correctly. Are you sure you want to remove this drive letter?" I click yes because it does not let me close out. After i click yes to that, i get one from virtual disk manager and it says, "assigning or removing drive letters on the current boot or page-file is not allowed. "What do i do? Please give me an answer that is not the same! It doesn't work for me!

Hard Drive Full After Sleep Mode

Problem occurred after upgrading from vista to windows 7.coming out of sleep mode, or logging in after computer left running unattended for several hours, c drive is full. Going into sleep mode/log off, c drive has 377/456 available. Have changed to dynamic drive and eliminated other partitions. Did not fix problem. No error codes. Restart clears up the problem and c drive goes back to normal space available.

Some additional information:

If computer left running and in lock-up problem occurs over time.

Normal steps taken to fix: defrag, minimized services, ran troubleshooter etc. Have run virus scans/spyware scans etc. Have searched forums for similar issue. Found something in vista forum regarding system restore taking up available drive space. So i have set maximum shadow storage to 10gb. Won't know for a while whether this fixed the problem. I doubt it though, because default max shadow storage was set to 30% = '40gb and problem was consuming 377gb.

I traced the offending files to the pc tools application internet security and/or registry mechanic in the common files subdirectory. There was an xmlfile in there that grew until all available drive space was consumed. I tried to get support from pc tools but all they suggested was downloading the current application versions, which i did, but to no avail.

I was at first unable to delete the file because it is in use when the apps are running in background. However, by changing the settings to turn them off at bootup, and using the disk cleanup application below, i was able to delete it.
