Pc Says " Shutting Down " But Does Not Shut Down

When i select the option to shut down my computer, it says "shutting down. " For fifteen to twenty minutes, then goes to a blue screen that says something about dumping memory and then reloads the log in screen. At that point it usually shuts down when i select the option but overall it takes about thirty minutes to shut down my computer sometimes, while once in a while it shuts down in less than five seconds. I already set up my computer to shut down rather than hibernate/sleep/restart when i select the shutdown button so that is not the issue. Here are my general system specifications:os: windows 7 home premium 64 bitcpu: intel core i7 920 2. 8ghz gpu: nvidia geforce gtx 260 896mb ram: 9mb hard drive: 750 gb my computer model is the gateway fx6801-03.

Random Shut Down / Computer Randomly Shutting Down

I have a sony vaio vgn-cs190j. I upgraded to windows 7 professional 64bit about 4 months ago and am now having issues with my computer randomly shutting down. It will instantly freeze up for like a second and just shut off to immediate power off. There is no bsod or a restart. It just instantly shuts down. It has happened while doing flash applets, surfing the web, and playing games on my computer. It even happened one time while i was on microsoft word. There is also the occasional occurrence where the computer will shut down immediately shutdown before or during start up.
Does anyone know how to fix this or if there is a known problem of this happening?

Pc Will Not Shut Down, Stays On " Shutting Down " Page

I have been trying to get my windows 7 to work for the past week. My basic problem at this point is getting it to shut down. It gets to the "shutting down" page and pretty much sits there and won't shut down. I have a dell inspiron 530. 64 bit. Nd in case you're going to ask. I know very little about the workings of a computer. I can work in programs and do very well. I work on a computer every day but as far as what makes it work. Thats a mystery to me. So, that said, when i upgraded from vista to windows 7 i was hoping it would help me with problems i was having with vista. I'd like to get over this shutting down problem so i can find out if it does the trick.

Here is a possibility of where i went wrong. I may have neglected some of the drivers needed to upgrade to 7. Those being the ones mentioned on the dell site. The upgrades for my inspiron 530. I downloaded the drivers but the instructions on how to load them were a bit confusing. Apparently i have to load them in some order, but the ones i downloaded have different names than the ones listed in the instructions. So, since i have no clue what they're talking about i dont know if i dare open and install these. If i do them in the wrong order im afraid things will just get worse.

Usb Drives, External Hd Not Shutting Down

When i finish using my usb thumb drive, or external hard drive and click the icon for "safely remove hardware and eject media" and click "remove", the message pops up saying the drive can be safely removed - but the drive light stays illuminated on the thumb drive or the external drive. If i pull the thumb drive out, the next time i use it i'm informed that there may be errors and i'm given the option to scan and fix the drive or continue without scanning. Because of this problem, i always shut the pc down before removing the external hard drive (its light stays on as well).

Is there some way to correct this?

System Shutting Down After Left Idle

Not sure if this is the correct forum. Every now and then, i come back to do something and my system has completely shut down, for no apparent reason. It is not restarting, but shutting down. I have not caught it, when it has done it. I push the powere button and it comes back up, and will either go for safe mode or regular start, either will work (though usually i do a safe mode and, scan the hd on restart). It did not happen with xp, but has been doing this for about 2 wks or more. I have  checked connections and the fans, all seems alright there. Anything i can check?

Windows Will Not Shut Down

Since installing all my drivers and programs on ultimate 64 windows will not shut down. If i try to restart or shut down it just sits there on the logging off screen forever. There is occasional disk activity. I've tried safe mode and windows shuts down perfectly fine. So i can only assume its a driver of some system setting causing the problem, all the drivers are the latest and are also used on a dual boot vista system.

Pc Will Not Shut Down Completely

I have setup a dual boot system, xp & 7, on two separate hard drives. Everything was working fine for a couple of weeks. I am not sure what suddenly caused the problem but windows 7 will no longer shut down completely on its own. It spins at the shutting down screen. I have to hold to power button in to get the computer to shut down. I have tried restoring the computer to an earlier version without success. I have closed the anti-virus program and all other programs. I have also stopped unnecessary processes. It still will not shut down automatically. Windows xp still runs fine and shut down completely on its own.

Eventually it just cuts out like after some time, ill say about 5-10 mins, then restarts saying there was an issue shutting down. So for the past couple of days i been trying to fix this problem and it seems i cant do it on my own.

Pc Restarts Each Time I Try To Shut Down

I've looked through the forums to see if i could find a solution to this issue, but the most i've been able to find is that there might be an incompatible driver somewhere on my system that's causing this to occur. When i click on "shut down", the computer does shut down, but then it turns back on after a few seconds. I had a clean install of windows 7 ultimate (64-bit)done on the computer to wipe everything off of it and start from scratch, and this still occurs. My computer is an mpc clientpro 424. I've tried disabling automatic restart, and the issue still occurs. Can anyone help?

Pc Will Not Shut Down And Explorer Crashing

Hey, so when i try to shut down my computer it just gets stuck on the shutting down screen and i have to switch it off by holding down the power button. I'm fairly sure this is because the system cannot end certain processes but i don't know which ones. At first i thought it was itunes because it wouldn't open but would start a process that wouldn't shut down. Then i got it uninstalled and it hasn't helped. Now the other problem, maybe related? When i right click on the desktop explorer crashes (not ie). It doesn't just shut off but stops responding. For some reason i can still use the taskbar and start menu (i thought that was part of explorer). And my computer is constantly running at 100% cpu usage. Its an hp laptop running windows 7 and has had windows on it for at least a couple months running fine.

Media Center Will Not Shut Off

I am running windows 7 and this is a new problem. It did not occur when i installed windows 7. When i login to my laptop the media center comes up, i can not close it. When i hit the 'x' in the upper right corner, it expands but does not close. Then when i try to run any program, it brings up the media center - not the program. I can't access any of my installed programs - only media center. I'm at a loss. When i installed windows7 everything was running perfectly for several weeks and the only thing i have done is to run the automatic updates.

Many Messages About Updates Before Shut Down

Every time i click on the start up button, there is a little yellow shield with a exclamation mark in the center (). It says that i have updates to install, so far, nothing bad has happened. It's just that it takes a long time to shut down with the updates. It's happened about 4 times already ranging from 5 to 26 updates. I'm thinking that this can't be right. Why would there be so many updates to install? Testing it out, i immediately shut down the computer and let it install updates, then after that, i turned it on and waited, sure enough, there were more updates to be installed. I don't know if this is a some kind of bug of virus but the more i know and the faster it's resolved, the better i'll feel.

This has happened ever since i installed windows 7 to my laptop. My wireless access point has no problem.

Monitor Shut Off After Boot Screen

Can't believe i have to ask this problem again, previously my problem is my screen gets lower resolution when windows supposed to shows login screen (honestly it's remain unsolved) now my monitor suddenly just turn off when windows supposed to shows login screen (even though i can clearly hear the login screen's sound. )

It works fine after i press the power button to power up my laptop, the monitor showing bios & windows boot screen, but after that my monitor just turn off. Even when i'm performing clean boot (disable all startup items and disable other than microsoft services via msconfig) this problems still remains.

The only thing i could do it's just press the power button to shut down my laptop improperly then press the power button again to power up, then the problem's gone. Why this problem come on my 1st boot, suddenly gone in 2nd boot and sometime happens again when i'm trying to restart or power up again after shutting down my laptop from my 2nd boot?

Need to upgrade my graphic driver? Already have the newest version
15. 12. 75. 4. 1930 (8. 15. 10. 1930) from downloadcenter.

My device manager shows no problem/conflict at all. Don't have any second monitor plugged in my laptop ever since i've installed windows 7.

Restart And Shut Down Problems After Upgrade

I used a toshiba upgrade disk ($35) to upgrade from vista to windows 7. Now, any time i use "lock", "sleep" , "hibernate", close down the lid, or simply "shut down" it has become harder & harder to restart my laptop. Its a disaster & i think that the windows 7 upgrade is to blame. On restart, i'm getting a message that windows didn't shut down properly (even when it was) if suggests "checking one of my disks for inconsistency" but fails to start the process & advises me to restore my system to an earlier date which i'v tried on numerous occasions. It shows an error reference number 766f6c756d652a63. I've tried numerous sites to try & solve this problem without success. I've also noted scores of people on these sites who have had problems after upgrading to windows 7.

Shut Down Computer From Login Screen

I have my windows 7 systems set up with user account passwords. I sometimes accidentally bump my keyboard and wake my computer up from sleep mode, taking it to the login screen where it waits for a password. How do you shut the computer off or put it back to sleep from the login screen? There isn't a button or anything. Does windows not let you shut the computer off until you log in? It's a completely unnecessary hassle to have to log in to put the computer back to sleep, not to mention if someone else in my family accidentally woke the computer up they wouldn't be able to put it back to sleep at all.

Computer Hangs On Shut Down And Lockout

I'm running windows 7 ultimate x64 upgraded from windows xp pro 32x on a dell precision 490 (2 xeon dual cores 5130 2ghz, 4gigs ecc ram, radeon 4850 vc, sb x-fi xtreme audio sc). My problem is that windows 7 sometimes (not always) hangs when i attempt to shut down. It goes through the shutdown to the point where it displays just the background and then nothing happens. The only thing that can be done from this screen is a hard boot. A similar problem occurs, occasionally, when trying to lock out the pc (win + l). It sometimes fails completely (and at that point ctrl+alt+del no longer responds either) or other times it'll lock out and then not let me back in displaying the same screen as when the computer hangs during shut down.

I've attempted chkdsk and run numerous virus and malware scans (avg, malwarebytes, adaware, trendmicro etc) with no errors or issues detected. None of the software/processes i'm currently running are particularly contentious and the problem never seems to occur regularly while using one program in particular. Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Acer Aspire Refuses To Shut Down

I bought an acer aspire 5738 just before christmas and sent off for the windows 7 upgrade disc and installed it. It was working fine until today, when all of a sudden it refused to shut down.
I've left it for over an hour, and all it that happens is the screen switches off after a while. Every occasion so far, i've had to hard shut down the laptop. I've tried restoring from an earlier point, closing everything down via task manager before shutting down and the various windows diagnostic tools, but nothing seems to be working. I don't understand why it wasn't a problem until now, and is now screwed up, as i haven't installed any new software in a couple of months. Can anyone help me?
