Problems Updating Bios After Update

Yesterday i went to the amd site to download the latest bios. I installed sp3 for windows xp and got the bsod but no specifics, just four error codes after the 0x0000007e stop. The bios saved as a winzip, and when i opened it, it was set as a vlc media player file, which seemed wrong, and as a text file, which seemed wrong. Earlier i had been able to open it, and run it, but then it said i had to shut down to get it to activate. So when i said shut down, the system said, hold on, it's not finished and if you shut down now, you could lose files. So i waited, nothing happened.

So i did it again and it said do you want to uninstall it, suggesting it was installed already.
If it was installed, it clearly had no affect on my bsod problem. I can only boot in safe modes since i upgraded to sp3. And one issue it said could be the problem is an out of date bios.
Do i have two bios? One for the cpu and one for the motherboard? I went to try and update my asus mb, but that may have been where i got the winzip issue, not the amd bios for the cpu. Either way, still getting the bsod. And when i have booted, i don't think the version of bios has changed. But i was able to check my version versus the latest versions, and i am seriously out of date.

Can Update Patches Affect Bios?

Can the windows update patches effect the bios? I had a discussion about testing patches against different platforms yesterday. My stance was that software updates/patches have nothing to do with hardware on any given machine. The response i got was well each platform has a different bios and software updates can be affected by the bios. I have never experienced any kind of relationship between a os, application software , etc. And the bios. M i correct in saying that software updates have nothing to do with the bios of the machine unless that update is specifically a bios software update?

Updating Drivers

I ran vista 64 on this custom pc for 2 years and upgraded to win 7. I had it running well for about a month until i started getting lots of updates for drivers, like atapi, 1394, atk 0110 etc. Installing these "updates" over time began to give me lock ups and bsods. I sort of just took windows word for it and installed these drivers, knowing full well that windows has tried to give me the wrong drivers in the past (gpu, monitor, sound card to name a few).

Im on my 6th install of win 7 so ive decided to update all drivers manually in the future. Im pretty familiar with updating drivers for devices like the gpu, mobo (nforce), monitor, mouse, sound card etc but im unsure about updating several other devices. These devices have windows generic drivers dating back to 2006 and include :

Acpi x64
Wdc scsi disk device
Ide ata/atapi controllers (ata 0, 1, pci ide generic)
1394 bus controller
Usb's

It should be noted that ive been sent windows updates for atapi, atk 0110, ehci (usb updates), 1394
My board is an asus striker ii extreme. From their website i can get the drivers for :jmicron(raid controller), nforce (though its outdated), onboard audio and atk 0110 and install them on top of the generic drivers. But that leaves me with quite a few other drivers missing. Atapi, ehci, 1394. Where would i get these?

Computer Not Updating

My computer is set to automatically update every day, but has not been updating at all for the past year. When i check for updates, a message appears that says "failed"  and when i look to see the list of things that try to update, they all say "failed. "  When it searches for updates, a code comes up that says "error" with a bunch of numbers after it. Because of the computer unable to update, i am no longer able to print or open up any microsoft programs, such as word or excel.

When i try to open these programs, it tells me that not updating the computer could affect the stability of the computer and that i would need to go to windows update to install new updates. When i opened up windows update, it said that i must first install an update for windows update. I clicked "install now" and it attempts to install, but then goes right back to the original page.

The other night i went online to see what else i could do about this. Several websites said that the problem was most likely from the catroot2 folder and that renaming this folder to catroot2old would fix the problem. I tried this and it would not allow me to change the name. Now i don't know what else to do.

Ie Will Not Open After Updating To Ie8

I recently reformatted my desktop pc and reinstalled xp home sp2. I have updated to sp3. I have just finished updating ie to ie8. I rebooted but, upon restarting, explorer did not open in the usual way. I selected my account to log in and my settings loaded but, when my desktop appeared, there was no taskbar and none of my icons. There was a small popup window about personalization of my browser settings (i'm sorry, for some reason i can't recall the wording) in the top left corner but, unfortunately, it hung and i had to reboot without shutting down properly.

Now, explorer starts as usual and, other programs seem to be fine but, when i click to open ie8, i get the little animated hourglass on my cursor for a moment or two - as though it is about to open - but then, it stops and nothing else happens. I would appreciate some direction on how to rectify the situation. I have to make do with a dial-up internet connection at the moment and so, if there's a way to fix it without downloading anything (simply because it takes a long time), that would be preferable.

Automatic Updating Problems

Something fishy seems to be going on with my computer. I seem to have a mystery partition on my hard drive. You see, my hard drive should have only one partition, drive c. And that's all that shows. However, when booting off of the windows xp setup disc, i discovered a second partition of 31 mb that does not show up in my computer. Automatic updating also fails to deliver the newest microsoft updates to me, and even windows steadystate installs no updates, even though it says it is. Several
Months ago, this computer had a bot and 37 trojan horses, a virus, and spyware. I reinstalled to get rid of the bot. Tell me, is what's going on here normal, or should i be worried? Is it possible that the bot is still on that mystery partition?

Updating Takes Hours

I just purchase a new asus laptop and fired it up yesterday for the first time. When i shut down last night there was a message that there were 13 updates to install. When i got up this morning, update 4 was installing and it's been that way for about 3 hours now. Yesterday i loaded a printer driver, avg, and transferred my oe contact file by copying it onto a cd. Laptop was running problem free before i closed it down last night. Can i simply turn off the computer?

Win 7 Hangs On Updating Ms Security Essentials

I installed win7 ult. As a dual boot on my pc which was running xp pro. (4 mb ram). Recently when i  booted up win7 it asked to update ms security essentials, but would not do so when i clicked update. I seemed to spin it's wheels for hours. I now note that when shutting down win7 instead it wants to reconfigure win7, but again seems to spin it's wheels endlessly without an endpoint (i ran it overnight at one point). Clearly there is a system glitch somewhere. Can someone suggest how to correct the problem(s) or is it necessary to reinstall win7.

Media Center Library Updating Issue

I am having repeated difficulty maintaining my media library with wmc. I am running win7 professional - 64 bit on a ibm intellistation 6223, dual 3. 6ghz xeon w/ 5gb memory. I have parred down my entire media library to one directory of ~20 pictures in an attempt to isolate the issue to no avail. Media player sees the pictures just fine: media center sees the picture directory, but claims it is empty.

I have already:

1. Rebuilt the database by following the directions give in another post by savan h, provided here:

Follow these steps:

A. Click start, type%systemdrive%programdatamicrosoftehome in the start search box and hit enter.

B. Right-click themediacenterdatastore. Dbfile and delete.

C. Restart windows media center.

(Note: i did not find the filemediacenterdatastore. Db, but did find and delete the . Db file called mcepg2-0. Db, but to no avail. )

2. I have uninstalled and re-installed wmc.

3. I have run system file checker (sfc) and no errors were found.

Why can't wmc see and display picture files that wmp has no problem with?

Won't Stop Updating And Configuring

Everytime i turn off my computer, vista is downloading updates. Then the next time i turn it on, it says it's 'configuring 1 of 3- do not turn computer off'. This takes up to 20 minutes to configure all three. It seems as if it's attempting to perform the same update over and over. I let it run- i don't turn off the computer. To top it all, everytime over the past year that vista has updated, my computer fails to boot, and has to search for solutions, which of course takes forever as well.

It finally boots up, but this is obviously unacceptable. I need to know if there is a solution, or if it's just one more flaw in the terrible vista operating system, and i should just download windows 7, or, better yet, buy a mac.

Sound Not Working After Updating Display Driver

I recently upgraded to windows 7 and am having an annoying issue with the sound. My display driver is intel g45/g43 express chipset. My sound drivers are intel high definition audio hdmi (location 3 (internal high definition audio bus)) and realtek high definition audio (location 2 (internal high definition audio bus)). When first upgrading the sound works fine (using the intel driver). However, when i upgrade my display driver, the sound stops working. My pc is switching over to the realtek driver that doesn't have my hdmi connection (so no sound).

In the 'sound' section in control panel, my intel driver isn't even showing up as an available playback device. Important to note that in vista i had the updated display driver and did not have an issue like this. I always have option of not using updated driver but i prefer to have it. The updated driver provides height/width resizing so i can use highest resolution and then scale to fit my plasma. Any help would be much appreciated

Error Code - 0x643 When Updating .net Framework 3.5

I had to do a recovery on my computer a few days ago and no problems doing all the updates until this one.microsoft .net framework 3. 5 service pack 1 and .net framework 3. 5 family update for .net versions 2. 0 through 3. 5 (kb951847) x86. The error code is 0x643.

I reinstalled my microsoft 2007 software before i received notification of this update, when i open a word doc, it always configures before opening my document. I'm not sure if these 2 problems are related as i've read somewhere on microsoft about don't run a utility to fix the .net framework problems if have microsoft 2007 installed.

System information:

Microsoft windows xp home edition sp3
Compaq presario
System type: x86

Trouble Updating .net Framework, Receiving Error Code 643

I am not too keen with computers so you'll have to bear with me here. My computer has been acting a little funky lately, so i figured that i should update my computer. This update was a service pack for my .net framework. I failed in this attempt, as aforementioned receiving error code 643, which apparently means that my current .net framework is damaged. I can't update it b/c it is damaged. Seems a little silly.

I then went to help and support, which told me to "fix it" by following a link in order to "repair .net framework. " This was a download.microsoft page and my computer for some reason don't like them. Or maybe they don't like me. I get some "oops!" Message from firefox and internet explorer when trying to connect to a download.microsoft address.

I tried repairing my current .net framework using that "uninstall program" thingy in the control panel, but that didn't seem to have any effect on the success of its service pack update.
Well anyway, i followed a support.microsoft tutorial. It instructed me to uninstall my current .net framework using "dotnetfx cleanup tool" -something i had to install.

The tutorial then instructed me to go to a download.microsoft page, which ended in failure, of course. Soooo. Now i don't have a .net thing. I assume that to be bad, especially since i can't download another one from microsoft.
So far, i have gone to a couple of microsoft tutorial pages, but it always comes back to an inability to connect to download.microsoft. Once i fix whatever is wrong with my current .net framework, i feel like maybe i'll be able to successfully update my computer.

I'm not even sure why this is such a big deal to me since i have no idea what any of this means. I just need some help. Any ideas?

Oh! And i'm not sure if this is relevant, but when i try to connect to download.microsoft, i receive one of two messages: the "oops!" One . Which tells me nothing; and one that says that "'download.microsoft.com' is not set up to establish a connection on port 'world wide web service (http)' with this computer. "

Install While In Bios Or In Xp

I don't know if i should install windows 7 before i load windows xp, while i'm in the bios (boot from cd drive) or should i run it while in xp, when i put in the disk it says install now, check compatibility online. On the directions that come with the disk, it says do it through bios, but then online it says to load windows xp and install it that way (where it actually pulls up the screen mentioned above). So my question is a- what is the difference, and b- which one do you use, and c- under what circumstances do you use it?

Bios Problems

I have a compaq presario i am trying to sell, i need to wipe the hard drive, some people have recommended using dban, darik's boot and nuke. I downloaded the . Any suggestions for the bios etc. Would be amazing, however as long as all data can be wiped from the computer, ill be satisfied.

Bios Memory Issue

I'm having memory issues; win 7 is crashing about every 36 hours. Running win 7's memory checker (f8 at startup) says i need to contact manufacturer (memory errors reported). After contacting manufacturer, he said i need to make sure (first and foremost) that my motherboard bios is up to date. Then i need to make sure other bios settings are correct as well.

In previous version of windows, going into the bios was accomplished by pressing f2 at startup; now, however, i have only 2 options when executing this procedure: (1) staring win 7 normally or (2) performing the memory test.

How do you get into the bios? Choosing win 7's help feature, it says either f2 or f12. But neither of these takes me to the bios any longer. My motherboard is nvidia, by the way. Oh, and by the way, once i get into the bios, how do i update?

Changing Bios Settings

I have a custom built computer that has been running the windows 7 release candidate. I've been trying to install the full version but have not successfully been able to boot from the cd/dvd drive. There are two options to prompt the screen before windows starts either press delete for bios settings or f12 for boot menu. First off, i'm not sure which one i'm supposed to so i tried both. When i went to the boot menu the screen was frozen and i could not select the boot first device. What am i doing wrong?

No Bios Screen On Startup

No bios seen on startup - wrong resolution when finished startup but have to put the laptop to sleep and re-wake to finish startup. Acer 5920g; black screen on start-up or re-start

System:
- 5920g
- 8600m nvidia
- 2gb
- Vista home premium upgraded to windows 7 home

Symptoms:
- On start up no bios details and screen stays black but i hear the windows start up sound
- When plugging in the external monitor unable to see laptop screen as a selectable option (so fn+f5/fn+f6 do not work)
- Started about 5 weeks ago.

Actions:
- Put computer to sleep fn+f4
- Wake up and get resolution of 1200 by 768
- Re-set resolution to 1280 by 800
- If put to sleep and re-woken no impact continues to work fine
- Tried with an external monitor and works fine – can see the bios start-up routine

What has been done:
- Re-installed drivers sourced from acer and nvidia
- Refreshed the bios (source acer)
- Re-set the bios defaults
- Got confused with some many hardware suggested issues but convinced it is not a back-light or inverter problem

Will a reload back to vista or a clean install of windows 7 solve the bios post screen and resolution issues?

Bios Cannot See Any Devices To Boot

I performed a full hard disk encryption on my laptop using truecrypt. Now i cannot boot. Before i started i took the precaution to take a full image backup using norton ghost. I used the latest stable version - 6. 3a of truecrypt. I created a truecrypt rescue disk.

My hp laptop was running windows 7 ultimate (32-bit). The laptop contains 2 x 640 gigabyte hard disks from western digital - wd6400bevt blue scope 5400rpm - part number 591192-001 - model number wd6400bevt-60aort0. The system disk had 4 partitions before i started.

When i ran truecrypt i opted for: "encrpt the system partition or the entire system drive"; "standard truecrypt volume" i.e. No cascades; serpent encryption algorithm; the ripemd-160 hash algorithm; and 7 passes. The truecrypt program checked my parameter choices and did a test reboot without any error messages. The encryption process continued for 32 hours.

After the encryption finished with a "successful" message i was a little surprised that the program didn't suggest an immediate reboot. So i looked around on the disk. My file systems appeared normal. I was able to get into microsoft outlook and download new mail. I was able to browse my favorite sites on the internet. I was also able to look inside word documents.

So i decided to reboot. Since then i have not been able to get my system to run at all. I have had no luck using the truecrypt rescue disk; or a system recovery cd; or even the original windows 7 installation disk.

I get a black screen with a 4-5cm diameter blue disk displayed in the middle with the white letters, "hp". Down in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen it says "press the esc key for startup menu". Pressing esc does nothing, unless you press it 8-10 times, when it causes a "beep" noise to sound.

The problem is that the insyde h20 bios supplied by hp is unable to communicate with either of the hard disks or the cd drive; or a usb thumb drive. The bios program does talk to the keyboard.

I have tried a strategy to reset the bios back to default. I removed the battery and power cord from my laptop. Then held down the power-up button for 15 seconds to ensure any residual power had drained. Then i plugged the power supply back in, and hit the power up key. I still get the black screen with the hp logo and the press esc message.

I tried powering up and pressing a range of function keys.
F1 gives me a , "f1.system information" message.
F2 gives me a , "f2. Startup check" message.
F9 gives me a , "f9. Change boot device order" message.
F10 gives me a , "f10. Bios setup options" message.
F11 gives me a , "f11.system recovery" message.
Esc gives me a , "esc. Pause startup" message.
. But none of these options actually work.

To me this indicates that the bios programme is working partially and able to intepret keystrokes from my keyboard. But nothing else happens other than the whirr of my fan, the led lights displaying normally around my keyboard and the sound of my dvd/cd drive spinning up, and then slowing down again. It appears that in order to bootstrap my hard disk or even bootstrap from a bootable cd the bios needs to talk to one of the (now encrypted) partitions on my system hard drive.

I have tried re-seating the hard drive cables and contacts, and even swapping the hard drives over. I've probably voided my warranty by unscrewing the covers off the underside of my laptop to access these hard drives. I don't have access to another laptop or desktop capable of mounting my western digital hard drives. So i haven't been able to try the option of decrypting my system hard drive by that method.
