Trouble Dual Booting Win7 And Xp

Trying to install win xp onto a notebook that already has win 7 installed. I shrunk the partition holding win 7 and created a primary partition on the other. What i did was cut the hd in half and now have two partitions. The second partition is  a health primary partition and is now drive e:. I restart the notebook and with the xp pro disc in the cd drive i boot from it. All of the installation files and drivers load as usual but when it gets to the next part, i get a blue screen and it goes no farther.

I have run every test chkdsk etc. And the drive is fine. I'm starting to get the idea that you cannot install xp on a computer that is already running 7 no matter what you do. I have a multiboot desktop that i built but i installed xp first and then 7 and it works fine but then this was a computer that never had an os  of any kind on it. If anyone can confirm that i can't install xp on this machine unless i start from scratch and reinstall everything i would appreciate it, if there is a work around please let me know.

Reinstall On Dual Booting Macbook

I installed a recently purchased full version of windows 7 ultimate on my dual booting macbook pro laptop but am unable to install the xp compatibility module. Apparently there is an authenticity issue. The problem may be due to the fact that when i partitioned the disk and installed windows, i inadvertently corrupted the mac os x system. So i reinitialized the disk and installed os x again. Windows 7 apparently installed successfully. But when i downloaded the windows xp compatibility module it failed to install. The message indicates that there is an authenticity issue.

Dual Booting Cannot Find Microsoft Office Suite

I have set up a win 7 dual boot on my laptop which had vista home. The c drive has vista along with all my programs including microsoft office suite 2003 and 2007. When in win 7 i can find and use some programs eg picassa, photofiltre, but i cannot even see the microsoft office suites, they are not listed under all programs on the c drive.

I have tried copying a shortcut to word (in vista) on the win7 desktop folder, but it tells me when i click that i can only use shortcuts on programs that are installed? As i teach seniors computer i need to be able to access the office suites from win7 is there any way this can be achieved?

Once the system boots to the window's desktop i can remove the usb connection and upon reinsertion windows sees the device and installs drivers; then the keyboard and mouse work find.

Everything has been running great for the last 2 months, except for tonight, i start the pc up and now its stuck on the "loading windows" screen, the little widows logo is doing its thing getting brighter and dimmer but it sticks there, i have re-started several times but get back to the same screen, i get an occasional hard drive access light every few seconds but everything is dead, no mouse, keyboard or action on anything.

Some Programs Delays Before Booting Up

I have win 7 ultimate, cpu-core duo e6850, 4gb memory, nvdia 8800 gtx graphics card, motherboard evga nforce 680i lt sli. Often i will double click a program, usually internet explorer. The cursor will twirl like it is booting the program for 10 seconds then stop. In 1 to 2 minutes later the program will run. It seems that this does not happen with "portable" programs that don't access the registry. I have had this happen ever since installing win 7. I've scanned for viruses with 3 different programs and am clean. Does anyone know what is going onlso i have set my power saving settings to be always on and to never hibernate.

Problem Booting In Sata Mode

I recently built a computer using an asrock x58 extreme mobo. I installed windows 7, but realized only afterward that the mobo's default setting for the hdds was ide rather than sata.

I followed the registry hack instructions to change the "start" parameter for the msahci driver to "0" (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/922976?P=1), rebooted, changed the bios setting to ahci and everything worked fine. The sata drivers loaded and things were looking good!

However, a few days later i had a problem with going into "sleep" mode. The computer hung, and after several minutes i just switched if off and rebooted.

Now, i cannot get it to boot properly with the bios in ahci mode. The registry entries are still the same as when ahci was working, but it will not boot in sata mode. I get the message "problem loading os". Changing the bios back to ide allows me to boot.

Any ideas as to what went wrong (was it the hard shutdown that messed me up?), And any ideas on how to get sata working again?

Win 7 Not Booting - Unable To Do A System Restore

I installed the last windows updates last night, and this morning when i tried to boot up my computer, it worked, but it froze when i tried to run explorer so i had to do a forced shutdown. I then was unable to do a system restore, and now i'm getting the following message:windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. It goes on to ask me insert the windows disc (which i don't have), and goes on to say "an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data". What can i do to restore windows off of my hard-drive?

Trouble Booting From Windows Install Disk

I built a new computer installed windows xp no problem. It is a total sata machine hard drives and optical drive. I purchased a retail upgrade windows 7 disk. So i have to boot off the installation disc and select custom, there lies my problem. The disks loads the operating system into memory and gives me the desk top the only thing i can do is move the mouse around. It will not go to the install screen every time i put the disk into the dvd drive it says loading windows file then the windows 7 desktop appears no option to install no nothing. Is there a setting i am missing in bios where it runs the operating system off the disk and not install it.

Blue Screen Stop Error When Booting

I went on vacation june 5th. When i shutdown my computer (windows 7 professional x64) before leaving, two (2) critical microsoft updates were installed. When i returned from vacation today, june 9th, & started up my computer, i get a flash of a blue screen that has some stop error. It goes by so fast, i can't read it. I've tried the obligatory startup repair options numerous times, but it says that it cannot determine the cause of the problem.

I've tried the system restore option, but it is trying to restore to the (c:) (system) drive, which shows a status of "you must enable system protection on this drive". In startup recovery, the actual system drive has now become the e: or x: drive, so that doesn't work & the os isn't smart enough to identify the correct drive (i guess).

I've tried using the command prompt & running bootrec.exe with every available option, including rebuilding the bcd, but that doesn't work either. The /scan os option says "total identified windows installations: 0", even though i can see all of my windows files on the ~now~ e: & x: drives. I've tried booting into safe mode, but i get the same blue screen. On which the message is again unidentifiable. Everything was working fine before i shutdown my computer & the microsoft updates were installed.

Dual Monitor

Is there any option available with using dual monitor in a "stretched" view instead of extended? What i'm trying to do is run 1 application over my 2 monitors in full screen mode. So far i haven't found anything that would make this possible. I can extend and i can enlarge a window over 2 monitors but i can't really use a resolution of ~3200 * 1050 for example. This was possible under xp but neither vista or windows 7 i can get this to work.

I've tried searching the forums but alas i have not found an answer for this. If someone can find a topic already covering this sorry for double posting. But mostly i found extending and not really stretching it over 2 screens.

Dual Monitor Help

Dell couldn't seem to solve my problem, so i'm desperately in need of help. I have a dell inspiron 580, i3 processors. The machine has one vga output, and hdmi. I want to run two monitors, so dell informed me to buy a second vid card. I did, installed a raedon jd2600 pro 512mb with two dvi connections and one dvi adapter. I hooked both monitors up, and it will either run one monitor on the ati card, or one on the intel card, but i cannot extend the display. I was on the dell support line for over an hour, and  they told me to just go buy another dvi adapter and plug it in. So if that's true, i cant run two cards?

Dual Boot

I am currently running windows xp and need to upgrade for school. My computer has a 120 gb harddrive split into two partitions. Can i use the other partition that xp is not on to install and run windows 7? My primary drive is listed as os c: and the other one is listed as data d:. My system is as follows:

Emachine el 1200-01e. I meet all the system requirements except for the ram, which i will be upgrading anyway. Will it be better to buy a new computer if i can't install windows 7 on the other partition or should i perform a clean install? The clean install worries me a bit because i can't be without a computer very long as it is needed for online schooling.

Dual Monitor Support

I got windows 7 professional rtm through msdn. I have a 19" samsung and a 26" samsung monitor (t260hd and 941bw). When i start windows 7 with both monitors attached, it boots on both monitors, then goes black at the login screen. If i boot with either monitor plugged in solo, it works fine. Last, if i start with one, then plug the second one in on the fly, it automatically defaults to my 19"- the display manager shows both as active, and i can drag windows over to the invisible second desktop- but i can't see it. I installed the latest nvidia drivers for my 7600gt and installed the drivers that come with both monitors. I'm out of ideas. Can you guys help me out?

Issue With Dual Monitor

I have an i7 machine running windows 7 - 32. It has an nvidia 9400 gt video card and i am having an issue when i open word or notepad in the second monitor. Once i maximize the program on the second monitor, the mouse becomes unresponsive when in the primary monitor. If i manage to move the mouse back to the second monitor, the problem stops and as soon as i move the application to the main monitor the problem stops also. I am baffled about this issue since i have never seen anything like this. I have all the latest drivers for my hardware and all of them are for windows 7.

Dual Monitors Malfunction

Dual monitors, whilst using dual monitors i could not maximize the windows as shown in the task pan when i hover the cursor on it. I disconnected one monitor and the problem disappeared. I disconnected the other monitor and again the problem disappeared. I switched connection between the sockets ( i.e. Monitor to plug b and vice versa) and the problem disappeared. Any ideas how to restore to dual monitor viewing?

Dual Monitors, Trying To Get Them To Work

Me and my friend are attempting to connect two monitors to his desktop, and we have the computer connected properly, but the monitor is not receiving any kind of signal from the computer (it won't turn on, just has a black screen or says in power saver mode). The main monitor works (obviously, since l am posting this) and it connects to the nvida dvi card (a installed video card), and the second monitor is a vga. The second monitor we want to hook up we want to use on the old video card that came with the computer, and we have the ports for it.

However we cannot get it to work, and it is quite frustrating. We have tried to update the software, but we believe he may have disabled the second video card without meaning to, and we need to know several things at this point:

1. Can we use dual monitors from two different computers and use them to do different things (i.e. Use it to surf two different websites with two different keyboards/mouses, or play two different games (our intention is to play wow off the computer) in this manner)?

1a. If so, can someone please link to a site that would be easier to read and understand? (We have been to a few already posted but they are confusing or just say the same things and aren't working).
2. How would we re-enable the video card should it be turned off? Again, simple steps please.

3. Can we use the two separate video cards to run the two different items on the computer, or would they both be forced to run off the one video card?

3a. If so, is there anyone who can explain how to link one monitor to one video card and not the other?

Create A Dual 7/xp Boot

Is there a way to create a dual 7/xp boot? I have a dell xp system with a relative small and relative full hard drive. I'll probably have to upgrade to a new pc with win 7 in the near future. I have a number of programs that have upgrades upon upgrades (mostly downloaded) and i'm seeing a ton of work in my future. So i've seen some virtualization possibilities (e.g. Zinstall xp7) but is there a way to create a dual 7/xp boot by just installing - as a second drive - my existing drive into a win 7 machine. Don't know if it matters but there is a hidden small partition on that drive as well as the main c partition by the way, in case it's not obvious, i'm definitely not a hardware person.

Dual Boot Ghosts

I installed windows 7 on a machine that had been running xp using the custom install. Everything went well with the installation and the system seems to run fine. However, at startup i'm prompted to select an os to boot from (windows 7 or "earlier version of windows") which is annoying at best. If earlier version of windows is selected it can't/won't boot and simply goes back to windows 7. Only a single partition shows up in the disk manager, and i'm pretty sure there isn't any other installations of windows left on the machine. I've tried rebuilding the bcd, but when running bootrec.exe/rebuild bcd it indicates number of os found = 0.

Can anyone suggest a way to stop the system from asking me which os i want to boot to?

Turn Off Dual Boot

I have a created a system using windows 7 64-bit and windows xp professional. My c drive is the win 7 while the d drive is the old windows xp. I am ready to abandon windows xp and go with windows 7 only. My c drive is a sata drive while my d drive is an old pata drive. I wish to disable windows xp and format the d drive.

In disk management, my windows 7 disk is disk 2/drive c: with boot, page file, crash dump and primary partition. My windows xp disk is listed as disk 0/drive d with system, active and primary partition

Since the boot info is on the windows 7, could i just take the d drive out of the system without any problems? Is there a way to tell the boot to ignore the d drive as a drive with an operating system on it before i remove the d drive?

Dual Monitors - Black Bands On One

Dual monitors, black bands on one and the other monitor is fine using nvidia scaling, i recently upgraded from vista to windows 7 x64 via a clean install. I have dual monitors that i use on a daily basis. Both of them are wide-screen format. I prefer to use 1280x1024 which is far under the native resolution of both monitors because the icons and texts are bigger and easier to read. With vista, i didn't have a problem but hopefully someone can help.

I use a geforce 8800 and i downloaded the nvidia drivers so i can access the control panel to customize. With the first monitor, it gives me options under "adjust desktop size and position" and i selected "use nvidia scaling" and everything is back to normal. However, when i click on the second display that i would like to change, instead of providing those options, it gives me an option to move the screen up down left or right.

I thought that my selecting the nvidia scaling it would go in effect for both monitors, however it only shows it for one so i figured i have to manually do it for both. The other one is 1280x1024 with black bands on the side and it is frustrating trying to troubleshoot this. Can anyone provide a solution?

Lost Ability To Dual Boot Into Xp

After formatting my vista drive and installing windows 7, i lost my ability to dual-boot into xp. How do i restore that dual boot option? I was previously running a dual-boot for vista and xp. Yesterday, i formatted my c: drive (vista) and installed windows 7 onto it, and now i can't boot into xp. I now understand that in doing that i erased the old boot loader. How do i modify the boot loader to allow me to boot to xp?

Win 7 Dual Monitor Issues

I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on a dell latitude notebook computer. When it is docked i have dual external monitors. My primary monitor is dvi and the secondary monitor is vga. Recently i have noticed that my primary display is darker than my secondary display. I checked my brightness and contrast controls on both monitors and they are set properly. The weird part is that my mouse pointer is the same brightness on both monitors, but the applications and desktop appear to be faded on my primary monitor. What would cause this? What settings should i check?

Win 7 Dual Monitor Issue

Weird issue. Before upgrading to windows 7 i have two 19inch monitors i use, they worked brilliant at 1440x900 res. There are same in everyway (no sure on make or model) the issue is, when i upgraded to windows 7 and wanted to setup duel monitors one monitor was fine at the 1440x900 res but the other one was not allowing me to go higher then 800x600 plus windows 7 description of the monitor was 17inch? Now first thing was to of course check drivers. So i did i am running a 9600gso nvi. So i made sure i have windows 7 (64bit) drivers installed. Tried this twice. Tried using the normally windows drivers. No luck. Next thing was to uninstall generic pnp monitors. Tried that and no luck.

Next thing i tried was to plug the monitor having the issue in on its own. This allowed me to get 1440/900 but when linking second monitor up, didn't detect anything, restarted the computer and same issue as before.

Dual Monitors Problem In Win 7

I have a dell laptop. I plugged in an acer al2223w monitor by vga cord. I went to screen resolution to setup dual-screens, and the acer monitor is identified, but it is the only monitor i see. It does not show 2 screens. The acer monitor is indicating that it has no signal. When i click "detect monitor" nothing happens. It is as if i have only the acer monitor on the system, even though the acer screen is not working? Please help if you have any information. Shouldn't the laptop screen also be showing in the screen resolution setup?
