Sata Hdd Not Found On Win 7 Install

I've bought a new hdd drive to install win7. I have xp pro on my old hdd and want to keep this as it is for dual boot. When i boot with the win7 disk to do a custom install, it can't find either hdd.
I point to the drivers on the cd, pen drive or floppy disk and it doesn't find those either. After quitting the installation i found it had made this folder on the new drive: g:

Fresh Install Of Win7 On Sata Drive

I have tried several times to install windows 7 oem onto my freshly built computer onto a sata 2 drive. It hangs up each time after it copies the files off the dvd and says its starting up windows. No error messages are displayed. It never gets to the point where it asks me if i need to install 3-party drivers for the gigabyte sata controller. I have tried to install with the wd drive both non-partitioned and partitioned/formatted to ntfs. What am i doing wrong?

Gigabyte ga-ma785gmt. Ud2h
Amd phenom ii x4 965
4 gig of corsair dual channel ddr3 1666+
Internal integrated ati radeon hd 4200 graphics
Western digital 500 gb sata 2
Seagate 500 gb sata 2

Jack

Update as of 12/19/09

I have finally got back to trying to finish the build after about 10 days of waiting to get the time to sit down withthe system again. I'm developing a painful disgust for windows 7. The software is real touchy in comparison with windows xp which i have loaded on several types of systems with no problems. I went through some forums on the subject and found several suggestions which ultimately helped me get the software installed. The system subsequently crashed while getting updates from microsoft's website. I'm now going through the motions of trying to reload the software. Here is what a few people suggested:

1. Remove all hardware not needed for the install: cd/rw, external usb devices, etc. And bring memory down to one stick. (Done) note: i never had to do this with xp.
2. Make floppy or usb with sata driver. Install when prompted. (Done)

Note: make sure you install sata and not raid driver because people have had problem with raid drivers during install.

3. Make sure bios is set to sata mode. (Done).
4. Make sure your not using raid sata connectors. I have 5 connectors all the same color listed as sata2_0, sata2_1, sata2_2, sata2_3, and sata2_4 which according to my manual can all be used for sata or for raid depending on bios setting. (Done).

My current install says it is completing installation and has been setting in the same spot at the progress bar at the bottom #2 installing windows for over 90 minutes. I believe the install hung up again for whatever reason. Going to try again and recheck everything. Failed again taking motherboard, processor, and ram back to fry's tomorrow.

Update as of 12-20-09

I returned the gigabyte ga-ma785gmt. Ud2h, amd phenom ii x4 965 and 4 gig of corsair dual channel ddr3 1666+ back to fry's for store credit. Fry's said that due to the issues they suspect that the motherboard was bad. My new selection was asus m3n78-vm motherboard, amd phenom ii x4 965 processor, and kingston ddr2 2gb ram. I built the system and windows 7 loaded with no problems.

The bios and windows 7 recognized the sata 2 hard drive without even loading the sata driver at install. The system seems stable. I'm going to let it run overnight and see if i get any errors. My faith in windows 7 is restored.

Cannot Install Win 7 On Sata Hard Disk - Intel 945 Chipset Motherboard

I troubleshoot more than one pc with dual boot system which run windows xp and windows 7. Which system are most latest- intel g31 chipset, 2gb ram, 500 gb sata hdd, 2. 5 ghz intel dual core etc.
But, now i face some installation problem with my pc. Yesterday i run my pc smoothly with windows 7 with 2 ghz pentium 4, 1 gb ram, 80 gb pata hdd, 945 chipset motherboard etc. I need more storage area, so i purchase a hitachi 500 gb sata hdd. My motherboard has one pata connector and two sata connector. I use the pata connector to attach my hdd and dvd. They worked fine.

But, when i attach my new 500 gb sata hdd to sata connector and remove the 80 gb pata hdd. Only dvd attach with pata connector. I insert my windows 7 installtion dvd to the drive and restart my pc and go to bios. This is amibios. I find bios recognize the sata hdd as primary master and dvd to secondary slave drive. I also find sata drive mark in ide form. (Their also raid and ahci also available. ) I save the configuration and reboot. After reboot, when pc want to start from dvd, i press the space key from keyboard and the setup start to copy installation file in 2 stage and i find it complete the copy process. And pc going to start up, but, but a green color bar running through a tube for about 2 hours. Nothing happen. Read more at the forum.

Raid Hdd Was Not Assigned Drive Letters After Install

Boot manager installs on wrong hdd and raid hdd's was not assigned drive letters after install. This is first time i installed windows 7 and after updating motherboard bios and mixing the hdd boot order i find out in the end that the files windows require has been installed on my mirror raid instead of the system disk stripe raid. This annoys me a bit, do i have to plug out all my hdd's except the ones i want to install windows 7 on to ensure the booting is independent of other hdd's?

(Another annoyance was that the mirror raid did not show up under my computer, which after installing every driver known to man i found that a drive letter had not been assigned. )

Win 7 Install Requires Driver Download For Hdd To Load Windows

I'm installing windows 7 (32 bit) onto a freshly formatted hdd. Installation goes all the way to highlighting the partitioned disk but refuses to load stating it needs a driver download. I can't find any drivers on line for my wd hdd and have never needed them before. Someone suggested upgrading the bios but with no operating system on the computer i'm not sure how to achieve this. Any suggestions?

Drive Not Found Win 7 Install

Ok i think this is going to be a raid controller driver issue but just in case i gotta ask. I have vista, gateway lx6810-01 with raid 0 sata drive 640gb, q8200 quad core processor with nvidia chipset 720i. I have installed xp and vista a 1000 times on pc's so am familiar with the process of how to do it. I have even reinstalled raid drivers and vista on this gateway. I put in win7 bootable disk. Says loading drivers, says drive not found aborting installation. Then it says loading usb drivers. Success cd-dvd rom drivers. Success (paraphrasing as it rolls through boot rather fast)then the cursor just flashes and does nothing. Keys on keyboard do nothing.

1 time i got it to load to what looked like an old win me or 98 boot that had a:> like it was looking for a floppy. I tried b: c: d: e: and f: and all said drive not found. I also have the setup disk on my external usb 500gb hard drive and tried to boot from there with same results. I am sure it is needing raid driver to locate my hard drive that is raid but unlike xp and vista it does not tell you how to get to these files (my system does not come with a floppy drive).

Error Found Code 646 Install Microsoft Office Updates

I am running windows vista (32 bit) premium home edition service pack 2 on a dell inspiron 530s pc.
The specific updates that i have been experiencing the problem are:

Security update for microsoft office 2003 (kb975051)

Security update for microsoft office excel 2003 (kb973475)
Security update for microsoft office word 2003 (kb973443)

Update for microsoft office 2003 (kb978551)

Update for microsoft office outlook 2003 junk email filter (kb977840)

I have not had my computer in "safe mode" during installs. I have tried temporarily disabling my firewall, then i tried with all protection temporarily off. I really do not understand the reasoning for me to need the updates for microsoft office 2003 and related features. I do not have it installed in my computer, nor do i use any outlook products. I assume it may be to cover items that one may receive via email perhaps as an attachment.

Sata Drive Order

I have two western digital cavier (wd5001aals) drives on my new system. One is fixed and the other is in a removable vantec ez 2 swap case (mrk-300st). I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64.

The fixed drive is bootable and contains windows (c: drive). The removable drive (d:) is empty. Windows' disk management indicates that the fixed drive is 'disk 1' and the removable drive is 'disk 0'. I wish to reverse this designation. That is: the fixed drive should be 'disk 0' and the removable should be 'disk 1'. I've tried using different sata ports on the mother board but no matter how i switch them, windows always keeps the designation the same. The mother board is: asus p755d premium.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how i can resolve this issue?

64-bit Sata Drive Issue

I recently built a new computer and installed win7 pro, 64 bit as the os. I have two, 1. 5 tb sata drives installed in the raid 0 and raid 1 position on the motherboard. The device manager shows both drives as operating normally but yet, when i click on my computer, it shows only "drive c: 139 gb. " I would like to configure it as drive c: and drive d:. The bios is set to ide/sata. If i go back and reset it as ahci, windows fails to boot. What have i done incorrectly and how can i correct the problem?(Intel i7 860, 8 mb ram. Evga p55-sli mobo)

Problem Booting In Sata Mode

I recently built a computer using an asrock x58 extreme mobo. I installed windows 7, but realized only afterward that the mobo's default setting for the hdds was ide rather than sata.

I followed the registry hack instructions to change the "start" parameter for the msahci driver to "0" (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/922976?P=1), rebooted, changed the bios setting to ahci and everything worked fine. The sata drivers loaded and things were looking good!

However, a few days later i had a problem with going into "sleep" mode. The computer hung, and after several minutes i just switched if off and rebooted.

Now, i cannot get it to boot properly with the bios in ahci mode. The registry entries are still the same as when ahci was working, but it will not boot in sata mode. I get the message "problem loading os". Changing the bios back to ide allows me to boot.

Any ideas as to what went wrong (was it the hard shutdown that messed me up?), And any ideas on how to get sata working again?

How To Prevent Users From Ejecting Sata Drive ?

Hi, i've a second sata drive (wdc wd15ears-00z5b1 if it matters), that windows 7 thinks is removable, and shows in the "safely remove hardware and eject media" applet, allowing any user to "eject" it. The hard drive is not removable, but sometimes users (non-admin) occasionally click "eject" it and remove from the system, forcing me to restart computer to bring it back. How do i disable this functionality and tell windows 7 this drive is not removable and may not be "ejected" by my users?

Upgrade From Vista Sata Driver Problem

Im trying upgrade from vista ultimate to windows 7 rc1, however during the compatibility check it fails, saying i need to upgrade a sata controller driver. So i do that, ie right click, select update driver, it says the latest driver is being used, but the problem remains, and i cant upgrade. Ive tried doing  a clean install booting from disk, and an upgrade, and all fails.

The error message is below, any ideas? The following issues are preventing windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

Recover Disc Image From Sata Drive

I just purchased a new laptop. Spent all last weekend upgrading the os to win7 pro; reinstalling all my apps; and transferring all my data. Done! I then discovered one of the usb ports didn't work.
When i return to the store, i found they had the same laptop, but with a larger hd at the same price. So. I need to transfer all my "stuff" to the new machine.

I used the windows disk image utility. I successfully created the images on an external esata drive.
When i tried to run the windows restore utility on the new machine, it didn't recognize any available images. (The esata drive appears ok in windows explorer.

Sata Optical Drives Not Enabled In Win 7

I have a dual-boot computer with two hdds, one running vista 32-bit home and the other windows 7 professional. My motherboard is an asus m2n-sli deluxe with bios updated to latest stable version. The win7 os apparently cannot recognize my sata optical drives, 2 internal and one usb, as they do not appear when i open "computer". They do appear in device manager with the yellow error signs (!) Next to them. When i ran ms fixit, i was told there was an incompatibility between the away mode function in the bios and 64-bit oss, so i went into bios and disabled amd live! Which i understand from the forums is that function, but no improvement.

Also, i moved a sata optical drive from sata1 after learning from an asus tech that the nvidia chipset has a problem with an optical drive being in that position. And my sata hdds are recognized.

Win 7 Does Not Support Sata Cdrom Drive

I installed windows 7 home premium from my lg gsa-h62l super multi dvd rewriter which has a sata interface. Device manager sees the drive as hl-dt-st dvdram gsa-h62l ata device. When i insert a disc, the drive spins up, the light flashes a few times, then goes out.co-incidentally, the hard disk led comes on solid. However, nothing else happens, and the hard disk led stays on solid. When i eject the disk, the hard disk led still stays on solid forever, i have to shut down the system to restore normal led activity on the hard disk.

I know the dvd drive is good, cause it still works fine on my xp computer. It also works on the windows 7 computer, if i boot up from bios with a bootable cd in it. However, if i boot up with the windows 7 cd in it, it goes past the starting windows screen, then hangs on the blue windows 7 splash screen. The mouse pointer still works. Ctrl-alt-del does nothing. The hard disk led is on solid. Have to force power shut-down. This is with the bios raid mode set to either ide or raid. If set to ahci, the computer boots from the windows 7 disc ok, but does not boot from the hard disk, which also has a sata interface. It hanhs on the circling windows icon display, the resets.

I cannot do a system restore, since windows 7 was installed on a computer that had xp running on it.

Win7 Not Recognizing Sata Native Mode

My problem seems the opposite to many already posted about sata support. My computer has a msi 863 neo3 mb which has sata support. I had to load special sata drivers to get xp to recognize the sata drives and xp ran on this machine stably for 5 years. It has an intel p4 ht 3400 with 2 gb ram. Win7 would not load past the 1st file copy stage until i reset the bios back to legacy isa mode. On successful completion of win7 install and all the available updates i reset the bios back to native mode but now win7 hangs again on starting windows stage.

The machine has 1 ide drive and 2 sata drives  in native mode i can start the computer and it will by default boot grub and load ubuntu 10. 04. I can also from grub chose windows xp which takes me to the win7 boot loader where i can chose either xp or win7. If i chose xp it loads fine but if i chose win7 it hangs. However if i set the bios to legacy mode i don't see all the drives so i don't get grub at all. Just goes straight to the win7 boot loader where i can only choose win7, which loads fine.

If i put back sata native mode i see win7 as a subset of grub which will not load as described above. Win7 is on the 1st ata drive with xp and ubuntu on the 3rd drive in separate partitions. I expected win7 to better support native sata mode and was surprised that changing the bios back to legacy allowed win7 to install. I guess it did not like the sata driver for xp.

The bios has also been updated after win7 installed to see if this would help but it appears to have made no difference. I was expecting that once win7 was fully installed, updated and stable it would allow the change back to native mode in the bios. I think i need to do something in the boot loader for win7 to account for the adjusted position of the win7 partition it assumes when in native mode relative to the other drives.

Win7 Can't See Sata Drives But Bios Can

My computer was running win 7 64 on a 2t stripe without any problems until last night when i tried to load a game that has anti pirate software on it. It installed the game and needed to reboot. After the reboot windows couldn't see the stripe. I can see both drives in bios but windows can't find them. I have a lot of stuff on the drives and don't really want to loose it if i can help it. I cant run any kind of repair as it doesn't see the drives to fix them.

Sata Storage Controller Driver Installation

I have a fresh install of win7 prof x64 on an 17/930 system. In trying to fix a problem with media center stuttering, i looked at my device drivers and noticed that the sata ahci controller driver that was installed by win 7 is a generic ahci driver circa 2006 (6. 1. 7600. 16385). My intel matrix storage manager has a much more recent driver available from asus for my p6x58d-e motherboard.
Question - can i install the new storage controller driver now that win 7 is already installed? If so, what is the correct process?

Win 7 64-bit Problem With 4 Sata Hard Drives

How can i get windows 7 (64bit) to see 4 sata hard drives? It will only accept 2 drives; if 4 are plugged in, it freezes on the "loading windows" screen.

Board:intel dg31pr; ram: 4 gb corsair; drives (all western digital): 600gb velociraptor(c:); 1. 5tb (e:); 1. 5tb (f:); 500gb (g:). Pioneer dvdrw-108 is allocated as d:all intel board drivers are up to date. Drives are plugged into board sata ports 0 through 3 (c, e, f, g) respectively.

The only drive that i have not moved around is the 600gb raptor - it has always stayed on motherboard sata port 0. I've tried all other variations on the other three drives. In every case, the only way windows will successfully reboot is if 2 drives are plugged in. If three or four are plugged in, windows hangs at the "loading windows" screen. I can "force" windows to accept a third and/or fourth drive if i boot with 2 drives and when i get to the login screen plug the other(s) in then press .

Windows will then see all the drives, but on reboot i'll have the same hang at the "loading windows" screen. If all the drives are plugged in, i will see them all in the bios. If i use the above mentioned method to "force" windows to recognize the drives, they can be seen both in windows explorer and in control panel>administrative tools>computer management>disk management. How should each drive be partitioned?  Mbr or gpt? Is it possible to partition the boot drive as gpt?

My reading indicates that the boot drive cannot be partitioned as gpt; can you advise as to if that is correct or not?Partitioning the disk as a basic mbr disk allows only 4 primary partitions and unlimited logical volumes - correct?Partitioning the disk as a basic gpt disk allows up to 128 primary volumes - correct?I read somewhere that windows 7 adds a 200 mb hidden partition (hex 17f) for o/s recovery - is that correct?

If so, trying to add 4 disks (assuming a single volume on each disk) would result in 5 volumes thus exceeding the mbr limit of 4 primary partitions (assuming that the boot disk must be partitioned as mbr). So do i need to adjust the partitioning in some way or is this a windows 7 sata bug of some sort? Can windows 7 boot from a gpt partitioned boot disk?If so, what do i need to do to do this. I started to do this in acronis disk director 11, but was warned that the disk would not be bootable, so i did not proceed with it.

Long Time To Load Win 7 On A Sata Drive

Win 7, 64 bit loading on a gigabyte ma785gm-us2h with 4 gig of memory. One pata pullout drive, 2 dvd burners, one pullout sata, (hot swappable) and one internal 160 gig sata drive. Have tried raid, with no array and i am currently trying ahci setup for the internal drive. Only happens on sata internal drive. First load took about 6-8 hrs. Second load was about 3 hrs when it should be about 1/2 hr. On first install, (a few months ago) took about 1/2 hr. To install my new version of win 7 and all programs loaded in a minimal amount of time and were not sluggish ro run.

The same programs are taking a long time to load. It seems to load to a pata drive o. K. When it takes a long time to load my programs are sluggish to run the first time i loaded it new out of the box with the same programs to load everything was fine. I was impressed and had i not lost 2 sata drives set up as a raid aray 1 it would still be running.

Vista tends to do the same thing and i wouldn't load it but there are some features. I like so it is loaded on the other computer. For the first time in a while vista was about 1/2 hr to load and hope it doesn't crash for a while as i do not want to load xp onto the sata drive in matts computer. Windows 7 is on maries computer. Both computers are named after my kids. Version 7 is impressive over vista 32 bit.

Sata Drive Doesn't Wake From Sleep

Have a clean install, firmware and all drivers are up to date. Windows 7 enterprise, x64
2 hard drives are installed in the system - 120 gb intel ssd with os install and 2tb wd caviar green which is used as a misc. File storage drive-system works fine until pc goes into sleep mode. If the pc wakes from sleep the 2tb drive is not accessible and does not appear under my computer found an article referencing a hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977178/, however i can't figure out what to download. The following are the files available as a download in the hotfix request page:

Windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2   all (global)  x86   sp1fix299433 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)x64sp1fix306215 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)x64sp1fix299433 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)ia64sp1fix299433 windows 7/windowsserver 2008 r2all (global)ia64sp1fix306215

Then there is a reference to manifest files (. Manifest) and the mum files (. Mum), as well as additional files for all supported x86-based versions of windows 7 what exactly do i need to download and install?

Compatibility List Of Sata Raid Hba Devices

My hp workstation has an embedded intel 82901 sata raid controller that does not work with windows 7. Apparently intel has no plans to provide drivers.

I need to find an hba that will work with my machine and also supports windows 7. Just finding the list of compatible disk controllers would probably be an important start, but i can't find that. Any suggestions (or maybe even a link) would be appreciated.

For reference, this is an hp xw8200, and the appropriate sata hba will support pci-x 133 64-bit.

Sata Hard Drive To Usb Adaptor Cannot Access

I cannot get my windows 7 x64 laptop to access my sata hard drive connected via a usb adaptor. Upon connecting for the first time or after you have uninstalled the usb mass storage device, it successfully installs the drivers. But you cannot see the drive listed in "my computer" nor access it. If you go to disk management the drive is acknowledged but offline. I had no problem accessing an ide drive connected via a usb adapter that was made by the same manufacturer that makes the sata to usb i am using. I have read/wrote to this sata drive and usb adaptor plugged in several other machines using vista and xp. My sata to usb adaptor:

Slow File Transfers Between Sata, Usb, Firewire

While testing out this new install i am getting very strange drive speed results. A 2gb test directory full of photos will copy in a blazing 10 seconds. Yes, that is cool i say to myself. So i delete the target and try again, where it then takes a minute or maybe even three. Then when it finally gets transferred and i delete the directory, even the delete takes forever.

Then if i try to do other stuff the system will eventually lock up, and about 2 minutes later it will unfreeze and deliver the flood of folders i tried to open in the interim. Looking at task manager i see an enormous number of explorer.exe page fault delta when the slowdown occurs.

It does not seem to matter what type of drive it is. I have checked and everything is current for drivers and updates. Also note, this has nothing to do with the networking (all local drives). I haven't any clues save for perhaps a memory timing problem, but i think i bought some decent memory, and there is plenty of it. The task manager shows very low memory use and no swapping problem. Nothing else is running during my tests. Any ideas?

My system is: win7 on an i7 2. 8 ghz processor on a p6t se asus mb with 12gb corsair ddr3 memory (6x2). 4 identical wd velocirator hard drives set to sata ide emulation.nvidia gtx 470 vid card. Everything set to "auto" (no overclocking/overvoltage). Thanks in advance for any ideas :)

Win 7 64 Bit Does Not Recognize File System On Sata Raid

Windows 7 64 bit ultimate (installed on single ide drive) does not recognize file system on sata raid pairs set up previously with xp. I recently upgraded to windows 7 64 bit ulitimate using a (single) ide drive. I also have two sata raid pairs on my pc, one mirrored, one striped. I installed drivers (asus m2a-vm_hdmi mobo) that enabled w7 to recognize the drives, but as far as w7 is concerned, they're brand new blank drives that need formatting - and both pairs have data that i do not want to lose.

When i double click a raid drive icon through explorer, w7 tells me i need to format the drives, when i decline, i get a "x: is not accesbile. The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted" error.

How do i get access to the files on these drives through w7?

Hangs / Freezes While Transferring Files From Sata Drive To Raid 0

Windows 7 hangs/freezes while transferring files from my e drive (sata) to my c drive (raid 0 sata). Every time i try to move a large group of files, the copy process will lock up about 40 seconds in. I can move smaller groups of files, liek 100-200mb or less and everything works fine, but if i try to move a gigabyte or more, the system will freeze.

Motherboard: asus p5n-d 750i
Cpu: q6600
Os: windows 7 64bit
Ram: 8 gig's ddr2 800

2x Raptor 10,000 Rpm Sata Raid 0 Drives Reported 12 Ms

My 2x raptor 10, 000 rpm sata raid 0 drives are being reported at 12. 98 ms avg access time! I built a new system w/ win 7 pro 64 and two 10, 000 rpm raptor sata drives set up as a raid 0 array (c: drive). Everything was up and running before i put my old 240 gb ata133 ide drive (old c: now d:) in to see what utility and progs i could use on a 64 bit sys. Afterwards sys info and active disk manage reports my raid array as disk:1 and the ide as disk:0. Why?

And does it matter? Although the ide reports as a master drive because it's the only drive on the ide bus but that shouldn't matter. I should have mentioned my bios settings: the ide drive isn't even listed for a boot device. (Don't know why. Maybe b/c i'm booting off the sata raid array? This is on an asus m4a78 plus motherboard. ) It always boots to 7 off the array no matter if the ide is in or not. There's no problem w/ operation and all of my drivers, busses and drives are working fine. It's just that my access time on my raid c: boot drive is an average of 12. 98 ms and is being reported as drive 1 instead of drive 0.

The reviewed times for the wd1500 raptor are: full access= 10. 6 ms with read access at: 4. 6 ms and write at: 5. 2 ms. Does this mean win is searching for the ide first before it looks on the array for whatever action? Is this slowing down my access time? Because sandra reports my access time as 12. 98 ms, that's a little slow for a 10, 000 rpm drive. Do you think it's the system is trying the ide first or the raid interface software that's slowing it down or whatny enlightenment would be greatly appreciated!

Cannot Boot From Hdd

Just installed windows 7 pro upgrade onto a hdd previously containing windows xp sp3. Windows 7 runs absolutely fine as far as i can tell. However the system has been booting to dvd, which has then passed over to the windows 7 install. When changing the bios settings back to boot from hdd first, i get the error "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, please reinstall". As far as i can tell, this is a hangover from the old xp installation, and windows 7 is not even trying to start. I've run the startup repair service from the windows 7 dvd once and all that did is unnecessarily run a system restore.
