Setting Up File Sharing

Two desktops both running windows 7 home premium. Got it set up once and it worked great. Then due to problems on pc 2 i did a clean install of windows 7 home premium. The files that i am trying to share reside on pc1. I have the homegroup set up on it and set several files to share and then selected read/write for those files. Printed out the key and went to pc2 to set it up.

Did as instructed on control panel but there is no network and internet but went into network. Thats when it gets crazy as it seems that in trying to join now and put in the password from pc1 it prints out its own password on the screen and says that there are no members in the homegroup.could someone help or point me to a document to read and use?

File Sharing Not Working

I have had the files on my vista home premium desktop set up for over a year as shared files. I could always access them from my laptop. I recently got a new laptop with windows 7 and it immediately could access the files and make changes to them. Today , all of a sudden the files on my desktop are now read only. I go to documents folder and there is a check make in "read only". I unchecked the box and click apply and another dialogue box comes up asking me to click ok to make these shared files.

I click ok and another little window appears and shows progress as attributes of every file in documents is being adjusted. However after that task completes and i go to look at documents properties -the read only box is still checked. I have restarted the desktop and tried to make the change 3 times but no success. If i go to network setting there is a green check mark for file sharing on. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how to fix this.

The only new software put on the laptop has been microsoft home and student office but i don't see where that should have affected anything.

File Sharing On Win 7

I have recently installed windows 7 on my pc. I have a ton of music and photos that i would like to be able to share. We recently got set up with at&t uverse, and there is an interactive feature on uverse that allows you to access your music and photos from your network. When i go to this feature in uverse, i am able to see that my pc is connected, but i am unable to access any of my folders that contain music or photos. At one point, i was able to access them, but i installed another hdd in my pc with more music and while i was trying to get everything set to share, things disappeared from uverse.

I have gone to my computer and right clicked on the music library that i want to share, i selected share with specific people, and included my homegroup. I gave the homegroup read / write access, but the files still do not show up on uverse. I would appreciate any insight on sharing or any insight on how to use with at&t uverse.

Setting Wireless Router Security Setting Have Changed

I have two selections possible. 'set up a new connection or network' wizard, or†'connect to a network' (manually)†in windows 7. I know how to install hardware but my problem is, the security setting have been changed, and these changes i am trying to make in the configuration are not possible. The different permutations on offer do not provide the correct selection for me. e.g. I want to key in wpa + wpa2 i can only have one of them. Authentication and data encryption have same problem. You cannot key in the info manually.

File Sharing Network Issues

I have three computers running on my network. 2 computer have windows 7 ultimate 64bit and 1 has windows vista ultimate 32bit. One of the computers is wireless (windows 7) the other 2 are wired. When i first turn on my wireless computer i have full internet and file sharing connections. I continue to have full connections until about about a half hour or until i lock that computer. Then when i start to use that computer again i have internet connections but my file sharing connections are messed up. I only can share files with the windows vista computer. When i try to access and share files with the other windows 7 computer it says windows cannot access.

I try and click diagnose but it cannot find anything wrong with it. Can anyone help me find out what is wrong with this? The only other way i can start to share files with both computers is to either restart my computer or go into computer management disable and then re enable my network card (that seems to work most of the time). My router and wireless card are only about a year and a half old. It is a linksys speed booster brand. Wrt54gs i think.

Firewall Blocking File Sharing

Came into the office today (two computers on the network) and one of the computers could not see the other on the network (it was not a problem the other way around). I went through some troubleshooting, and figured out it was the firewall on the one computer blocking access. The firewall is controlled by macafee virus protection. So, i turned off the firewall, and bingo, i can now see each computer from both directions. The problem is now i don't have any firewall protection. Any reason the settings on the firewall would have been different today than they were yesterday, and how do i turn the firewall back on while allowing the file sharing to continue on as before over the network?

The File And Printer Sharing (smb) Problem

The device or resource (pc name) is not setup to accept connections on port "the file and printer sharing (smb)". Long enough i have suffered with this problem, hopefully this will be the place that is able to solve it. A while ago, when i installed windows 7, the file sharing feature just worked fine. Thought†since a month, maybe 2 its not working at all. I have†2 pc's. One laptop with windows xp 64-bit, one main pc with windows 7 64-bit (windows 7 ultimate n build 7600).

The problem: i have†file sharing turned on, thought i cannot access the desktop pc from my laptop. (Not by name nor ip address). On the desktop pc itself, i cannot look into the shared files (which are on the same pc!). The ironical part of this is that is does show what files are shared†(and this updates correctly) thought it wont show the content. Also the desktop pc cannot see any other pc†on the network, thought they all have the same workgroup. The laptop is able to see and access other windows xp pc's who are in the same network, but not the desktop (windows 7) pc.

Some tests i did:
#1 from my laptop i can ping to my desktop.
#2 from my desktop i can ping to my laptop.
#3 i uninstalled northon ghost (even with the removal tool), no changes.
#4 i turned off eset nod32, windows firewall and windows defender, no changes.
#5 i uninstalled the drivers of my network card and reinstalled them, no changes.
#6 i checked if the serveces started that might have something to do with this:
-> "Computer browsing" -> started
-> "Ssdp discovery" -> started
-> "Tcp/ip netbios helper" -> started
-> "Server" -> started

#7 when i turn on network discovery, it will automatically go back to "off". (I used to be able, when all worked, to turn this on!)

#8 set pc back to a restore point 20 days ago (this unfortunately was the earliest i could find, thought even on that date i had problems. )
Change sharing options for different network profiles is configured as following:
Home†& work (current profile)
Turn off network discovery (! I cant turn this on !)
Turn on file and printer sharing
Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write.
Media streaming is off (also with "on", no changes)
Use 128-bit encryption to help. (Also with "40-†or 56-bit", no changes.
Allow windows to manage homegroup connections
Errors:
#1 when†i open network, it shows my desktop pc only in the list. (I used to have all the pc's in the list)
#2 when†i click my desktop pc's name, it shows which folders are shared: "some folder" & "users" are shared.
#3 when i click eighter of these folders i get the notification: "windows cannot access jeffreyusers"
#4 when i click "diagnose" it shows: "the remote device or resource won't accept the connection" and "the device or resource (jeffrey) is not set up to accept connections on port "the file and printer sharing (smb)". "

Solution: the problem is caused by a corrupted file.

The dns client and the dhcp client rely on 3 processes in windows 7: "nsi, tdx and afd" (can be found in the registry, see 2nd post of mine for location). If the dhcp client wont start, it might be, because of one of these files. By entering the command: "net start nsi"† (and tdx, and adf) you can find out if they work or not. In my case the tdx process wouldn't start.

Using shinmila h. 2nd post, you can find out if the file is corrupted, and replace them with a non corrupted one. In my case the tdx.sys file was totally empty, and following the tutorial of shinmila h. 2nd post link, i was able to replace the file, with a file of my friend. (I couldn't find it on the installation dvd).

Once the file has been replaced, the service would start normally again. (Manually, or automatically on restart) who knows what i have to do, to make windows sharing possible again, between a windows 7 and a windows xp pc.

File Sharing Between Xp With Office And Win 7 With Ms Works

File sharing between windows xp with microsoft office and windows 7 with microsoft works word processor and spreadsheets. I work for a small non-profit and just opened our first office. We received a donated rebuilt pc with microsoft xp office products which were compatible with what i had been using at home. Just received an new dell inspiron with windows 7 and the microsoft works programs installed. The systems are wirelessly networked to share files.

However, the new system will not install many of the existing logo images installed in our forms, and when they do install they aren't proportional or different colors. And formatting is often lost in the . Wps files.

I have been able to open files, edit and then re-save in the .doc format, but it is time consuming and doesn't solve the formatting or image issues. I have not been able to figure out how to run the compatibility software.

Setting Up Raid 1

A question for setting up raid 1 ( i have never attempted raid before). I understand that raid 1 can be set up through windows 7. I have one 1tb drive with windows 7 pro, 64-bit and one blank 1tb drive, which i would like to use to mirror the other drive. I know that when using hardware raid that you must set it up before loading the os. I already have many programs, etc. On my main drive and was hoping it wasn't too late to use the blank drive as a mirror. If so, are there some simple instructions to follow?

Losing Setting On Reboot

I have been getting windows 7 all installed and set up over the last few days. Did a clean install on a box that had xp. At some point today, windows 7 started losing a lot of my personal setting on every reboot. I have no idea if i flipped a setting that would do this or if something is scrooged. Examples of what is lost are my settings in ie and firefox (i use both browser as required by my job). The customization of the tool bars and which ones are displayed are all reset to defaults for both browsers on reboot. Also i lose all of my saved id/password for various web sites. I am not sure what all else is being lost, but do any of you have an idea of what might cause this?

Folder Setting Not Saving

I noticed that folder settings are not being saved after i restart the pc. There are two scenarios.
1. After i installed winamp media player, all audio files default to that program. I will open an mp3 file with windows media player and tell it to always open with this program. It then opens all mp3 files with wmp instead of winamp, but as soon as i restart it goes back.

2. I have an mp3 player which i connect to the pc and device stage opens it up and says that there is a new update for the player. I hit update and the interface changes. This stays like that until i restart the pc. Once i restart it, the interface goes back to the old one and it tells me there is a new update.

Windows 7 x64 with latest updates and patches installed.

Setting Up Hardware Raid Under Win7

Setting up a hardware raid under windows 7, with a separate system disc for system and programs (non raid) and 3 disc hardware raid 5 for data storage. I was running a windows xp pro machine with a hardware raid set to run as raid 5 (a 3 disc raid ) and a separate disc for the system and programs files. I want to recreate this set up using windows 7 pro (64 bit) running on a msi 790gx-g65 mother board. I successfully installed windows 7 on the system disc, without the raid drives being† installed. So i now have windows installed and running ok on my sytem disc.

I than added the 3 raid drives, set the bios to raid and set up the 3 disc hardware raid in the raid setup dialogue. Rebooted the system and first message error massage was 'can't find operating system' rebooted from dvd and started to reinstall window 7. Fter the keyboard screen, windows searches for an operating system but dose not find one. I select repair system add drives (latest raid drivers downloaded from the motherboards website).

Window finds these and seems to installs the drivers. First time i did this it windows did not find any of the drives at all, i repeated the process and it then found the raid and the separate drive but then it would not install on to the separate drive giving an error message saying it was not a correct drive and windows would not could not install on to it. Any idea anyone?

Cannot Access Documents And Setting Folder

I recently installed windows 7 rc as a dual boot with xp. Unfortunately, in windows 7, not only can i not access my documents and setting folder (win7 partition), but nothing through the†'user' folder, either. I created a new account, and had the same trouble. I've tried changing permissions through the tabs and dialogs, including in safe mode, and just as it seems it's getting ready to write the new permissions, it pops up yet another 'access denied' dialog. I've gone through windows update and all is up to date.

Should i be concerned, or is this a 'windows 7 rc' quirk?† How will it affect applications i might want to install to "try out"?

Setting Up Security To Protect Router

I set up a network and installed a router for wireless access to the net. I did not set up the security protection on the router at that time. Am trying to do so now but keep running into road block. I followed the directions† for security set up in the "setting up a wireless network. When i click on the "set up a new network" and click next i get a window that has two (2) messages.

"Choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure" and "it might take up to 90 seconds for unconfirmed devices on your computer to appear". Under the second message is a blank box. Nothing ever appears and the only options i am left with is cancel or next selection is not activated. Can someone help on where to go from here. The router manufacturer has provided ip address and password which i don't know what to do with.

Setting Individual Window Sizes

I cannot figure out how to set individual windows sizesin w7 and have them stay set. I have a desktop folder called "internet" where i keep about a dozen internet related shortcuts. It is set to display as medium icons and is sized to exactly hold those icons in two rows of six. When i open my computer (not sure why we keeping changing the name of this feature but that is another discussion) i have the view set to list and i want the window much larger than the desktop folder described above.

However what happens is that whatever the size is of the last window i close, any windows opened subsequently are sized that size. I want windows to retail their size as well as their view. Since functionality is obviously built in to retain view on a per window basis there has to be he possibility of retaining size as well.

I don't know what this black screen is called , but its the one, where† u can choose which operating system u want to use. Basically i installed windows 7 twice and† now†i have to choose between windows 7 and windows 7 the first one is the working one, the second one not. Setting Lan / Wlan Priorities

I'm running w7-64 up-graded from vista on an hp hdx16-1200 connected through an hp dock to a netgear wireless router (cable connected from router to dock). If i have a lan connected and wifi enabled, the pc selects the slower wifi connection. Backwards to what i'd expect/want. When i turn wifi off, it selects the lan. Hp is telling me that there was a setting in vista that ms eliminated in w7 and they have no recommendation for me other than turning wifi on and off.
