Desktop Or Taskbar Shortcut To File Path

In windows xp, i used to be able to create a shortcut to a specific file path on my company's shared document drive (the h: drive), like so:

H:projects2009proj999-99999 project namesubfolder title xsubfolder title ysubfolder title z

Once i'd done that, i'd drag the shortcut to the bottom of my screen, and thereafter i'd have one-click access to that file path. Now that we've upgraded to windows 7, i can't figure out how to accomplish this. I don't want to create a shortcut to one specific file but rather to the entire file path, so i'll be able to see all the documents and sub-folders within that file folder. Can anyone help me?

Cannot Change Desktop Shortcut Icon

I've got an application shortcut on my desktop which leads to a dos based executable. The icon is apparently generic windows 7. I've tried to change it several times to one of the icons in shell32.dll. No luck, the apply button remains greyed out, even though for all intense and purposes the shortcut itself recognizes the icon as it is depicted in the upper left hand corner of properties. If i change any of the other settings and apply the icon it is still not transferred. This is only true of this "dos" based app.

Desktop Shortcut To Contacts In Live Mail

My new replacement computer came with windows 7 and windows live mail installed as my e-mail client. I have been using it and like it. I have also been placing my contacts in the live mail contacts folder within that program. Since the folder allows other information in addition to e-mail, i would like to use it as my default/main contacts folder/only contacts folder, but i want to have a shortcut on the desktop to access the full file of contacts directly without opening the full e-mail program. I have tried unsuccessfully to drag a copy onto the desktop, locate the program in live mail and create the shortcut to a file that will open the contacts list.

I have also noted/found a contacts file under c/users/chick that looks like and contains the same information about a contact ( it has the same user face) identical to the contacts in the windows live mail folder but does not contain the contacts info that i have already made in the live mail program and apparently is not the same folder. How can i create a shortcut on my desktop that will open just the contacts folder in the windows live mail program? I might also ask the same question about the calendar in windows live mail.

Error - Failed To Find Driver File Path

I receive the error "failed to find driver file path. Error=ffffffffx[gle=0x00000003]" when trying to update from vista to windows 7. The upgrade gets to the 'updating files and settings' phase, then ends up rolling back to vista. Before this last install that failed i've updated all of my drivers, removed my antivirus software, used the mouse that came with my system rather than my wireless mouse, and unplugged all usb devices-basically everything i've been told to try.

The last thing i was told was that i'll have to just do a clean install. I'm very disappointed since one of the reasons i decided to buy windows 7 was that i would be able to upgrade and keep all of my settings.

Missing Taskbar On Desktop

From time to time, my taskbar on my desktop at the bottom disappears. I usually notice it when my laptop has been idle for a few hours or more with the lid closed. It also occurs sometimes when it comes out from hibernation. The workaround, i found out, is to right click on the desktop, go to personalize, then screensaver and click preview.

Once the preview initiates, i move my mouse to leave the screensaver and my taskbar is back. It's the damnedest thing. Since i found the workaround, it's not really a big deal but just somewhat of a hassle to do this from time to time. Anyone have the same issue? I have an hp pavillion dv6 with windows 7 home premium also running on a 64-bit machine. Any thoughts on a possible bug?

How To Create Desktop Icon In Taskbar?

Since i use my computer for graphical production, i have most aero turned off so to not leak colors through to work area. On my xp laptop, there is a desktop icon that i can click to minimize all open windows together. This is very handy when i want to use something that is an icon on my desktop but does not warrant getting added to the task bar. How do i create this icon. I do not want the version that arrives by right clicking the windows explorer icon, i just want the actual desktop to come forward.

Problem Clicking On Desktop And Taskbar

I have a new sony vaio laptop (about 2 weeks old) with windows 7, which has been working fine up to now. Since yesterday, when i start up, i have a cursor which i can move about the screen, but when i click (r or l) on an icon nothing happens. It's the same whether i use the mouse, tap the touchpad or click the touchpad buttons. If i open the start menu using the key, when i click on any item the menu closes down.

I can navigate with the arrows to restart. 1 out of 6 starts this morning has got me working again. I downloaded all the latest window 7 updates this morning but it took a few restarts to be working again after the installation. Have any of you good people got a clue what's going on, or do i need to get out my guarantee?

Moving Toolbars Off Taskbar Onto Desktop

I am a great fan of toolbars (i do not like having a million icons on my desktop, and do not display desktop icons). Instead, i have (with xp, for example) created toolbars of related programs from folders of shortcuts. I then pull them off the taskbar onto the desktop to a convenient spot. I find that in win7 i cannot get them off the taskbar! I get the 4-way move arrow, but it does nothing except move the toolbar back and forth on the taskbar. I usually have about six toolbars and that is too many to have on the taskbar all the time! Sniffle, sob, weep!

Every Icon On Desktop Looks Like Word File / Program

I'm working with windows 7, on a new hp laptop. Windows booted up normally, but every icon on the desktop looks like a word file, and every program in the startup menu looks like a word file. Any time that i try to open a program, word opens, as well as a window that says to pick windows (default), os dos, or other encoder to find which one works to be able to read the message in the window, but none of them work. None of the programs are accessible, and word is trying to open every program. What do i do? I'm so confused. I've never seen this before, and i'm pretty familiar with computers.

Printer Path Error

I was working on my program family tree maker when the following error occurred and i could not use my printer. I had to close family tree maker, close internet hookup with ancestry.com restart my computer. Then go to uniblue registry booster program to see if there are errors.

Error from microsoft 7

Runshell("regsvr32.exe", '/s "c:usersbetty'sappdatalocaltemppft8ac7. Tmpcpc_dmird.dll"', "", @normal, @wait)

Third time same date

Runshell("regsvr32.exe", '/s "c:usersbetty'sappdatalocaltemppft14fa. Tmpcpc_dmird.dll"', "", @normal, @wait)

This same problem happened 5 times more. Each time i had to go out of what i was doing on family tree maker close the file. Close my internet hook with ancestry.com and restart my computer. Here is the repair log from uniblue registry booster when i used it:

20:34:24 fri, 07 may 10
19:24: 59 fri, 07 may 10
18:04:52 sat 24 apr 10

I have done what ancestry has advised, and what microsoft has advised but this same problem keeps happening. This is a problem between your two programs and i am tired of it and someone has to repair this.

Upgrade Path Question

I just found out - the hard way! - That a pc with vista ultimate cannot be upgraded to win7 home premium  so i am keen to find out whether another household pc, presently running xp pro 64bit, can be upgraded (i know that that will require a clean install).

I've downloaded and am running the upgrade advisor but it's already been running for nearly an hour and i'm beginning to think it's going in circles! Can someone please give me a definitive answer? If the information is on microsoft's website, it's damned hard to find and i am not looking forward to possibly discovering that not only have i bought two useless-to-me upgrade copies (one of which i can't now send back because it's been opened) but will have lost the time i'd set aside to do the back-up and upgrade/install work.

Bootcamp Upgrade Path

I recently decided to upgrade my bootcamp macpro tower to windows 7 64bit. I have run bootcamp for a couple years now and i am very happy with it. I own a copy of windows xp32 and windows xp64. I thought i was going to be able to just purchase a windows 7 professional 64 upgrade (which i did) my problem is that bootcamp requires a sp2 windows 64bit disk to install. I only have the original disks which came with my original windows computer (xp64 sp1).

So, since i cannot use that disk to do the initial xp64 install, i'm not sure my windows 7 upgrade cds will work. Maybe i will just have to use the windows 7 64 upgrade disk to install the os (not even sure the upgrade disk is capable of that and i would just have to use my older xp64 serial to validate the upgrade. Anyways, any comments are welcome.

Also, i opened the windows 7 professional upgrade disks so i cannot return them for a refund. I have always used xp64 and never got a copy of vista, so i have no vista disks either, i believe that the windows 7 upgrade is a valid upgrade for me since i do own the copy of xp64 (and a copy of xp32 for that matter).

Access To Path Denied

An accounting program, agexpert analyst, running on windows 7 home premium 64 bit, frequently crashes with the error reported by the program "access to the path 'c:analystfinance.xml' is denied". The finance.xml file is a temporary file created by the analyst software in the program folder and usually is deleted when the program is exited.

Tech support for the software says that this is a windows problem. The error did not occur with windows vista home premium 64 bit.

The error report is quite extensive and as follows.

Analyst at aef. Prxfinance. Write() at aef. Prxfinance. Settext(string , string lbltext47, string inventorypastyear3) at aef. E9. A(string arbeglabel) at aef. E9. E(string arbeglabel) at a. (Object , startupeventargs ) at microsoft. Visualbasic. Pplicationservices. Windowsformsapplicationbase.

I have set permissions for the analyst folder so that advanced security settings are full control for authenticated users, users, administrators and system. The error continues to happen.

I do note that a second permission entry exists for users, that only shows read & execute permission. It can be edited for full control, but when changes are applied, the lower permission continues to exist.

Access To The Path Denied

On a server-client application, the server is on a windows 7 professional 64 bit the firewalls are off and the program has:

    Ownership claimed
Shared the folder, subfolders & files
    Granted everyone permission full control
    Mapped network drive

The client, windows 7 home premium 64 bit, with the firewalls off.

The client upon completion of the questionnaire and print/preview gets an error message: generate_pdf: access to the path 'c:program files (x86)afs files generate pdf" is denied.
Attempting to access (on the client) forms created on the server get the same error message.

Unable To Access Network Path

I am using windows 7 started edition on asus eee pc notebook. The notebook does not join to active directory. It is a stand alone pc.

I connect to the server and map the network drive at the first time by saving password, so that i do not need to enter the password everytime i connect to network.

Recently, the active directory prompt to change the login password on my desktop, another pc. However, i changed to password to a new credential. Thereafter, i could not connect to network mapped from the notebook.

How do i clear to old saved password and re-enter the new one? Is anyone have idea?

Explorer Searches Problem With Ordering Results By Full Path

Explorer searches no longer (i.e. Since xp) seem to allow ordering results by full path in the folder column. Open explorer, browse to "c:", search for "*. *Proj", lots of results, "folder" column (which used to show whole path logically) now shows last folder then first to last-but-one folder (e.g. "Aardvark(c:program files)"). This means that i cannot get a logical order when i order by this column. Very annoying when trying to find visual studio projects on my machine.

This sucks! I realize this is probably by design since the addition of libraries but it means that i have to reboot to ubuntu to do this type of search ordering now (pain!) If anyone knows a way around this to put folder as e.g. "C:program filesaardvark"i will be very grateful.

P. S. Please drop ntfs asap. Linux uses a modern file-system (ext4:2006), solaris uses a modern file-system (zfs:2004 - loved by codeproject.com) please don't keep using this slow and bad filesystem - the little improvements each year since 1993 are really started to seem sad and ineffectual.

Entering Unc Path For Using Restrospect Express Hd With Network Drive

How to i do the following? Are they talking about the f drive which by portable hard drive goes to or the c drive. Csharedirectory

Using retrospect express hd with a network drive

Previous versions of retrospect express hd required you to first map a network-attached drive or volume as a drive letter in my computer before you could use it as a backup destination. This older method has several drawbacks and is not ideal for connecting to network storage.

Retrospect express hd now employs universal naming convention (unc) to access storage resources on the network. A unc path looks like this: devicenamesharedirectory. As long as you know a network storage resource's login/password combination and its unc path (or can browse to it), then you can use it as a destination for retrospect express hd backups and copies.

To select network-attached storage as a backup or copy destination: on the "select the disk(s) to store your backups" screen, click the "click here to add a network attached drive" link.

Enter the unc path to the desired storage device or click the browse button to locate it on the network.

Enter your login and password for this storage device and click ok.

Place a checkmark next to the network-attached drive name and click next.

Finish configuring your backups normally.

My Documents Shortcut Does Not Work

I am in a school environment where we do not allow students to access the c drive. We also redirect students my documentsť folder to a network file storage server. We are in the process of converting to windows 7 and found that when a student tries to access their my documentsť from their desktop they get an access denied message.

We would like to keep students from accessing the c drive but allow them the use of the desktop short cut for their my documentsť. We are pretty sure this is due to the fact that the my documentsť folder is now a subfolder on the desktop. Is there a simple fix to allow students access only to their my documentsť folder?

Win 7 Shortcut Key

Trying to find a thread on keyboard shortcuts for win7. Specifically: in vista the windows+space bar brought you to the sidebar for easy access to your gadgets. In win7 the keystroke gets you to a (temporary) state on the desktop, but it doesn't persist. In other words, when you release the key combo, you return to whatever windows were open.

I am aware that you can click in the far right space on the task bar to go to the desktop; you can even set a preference to either peek or show the desktop. But that means having to remove your hands from the keyboard. Windows + p toggles your displays. So what are the all the keyboard shortcuts?

Shortcut Keys Not Working

Ctrl + a and ctrl + d stopped working in the mail program to select all and delete selected emails. These functions work if accessed through edit on the toolbar but not if want to use the shortcut keys.
Also, backspace key is not functioning on one particular website i access. The backspace arrow in upper left corner functions properly but not the backspace key.

This makes browsing very slow and this is a shopping site that you want to be able to browse back and forth easily from a product to it's description and back to the next product. Oddly enough, this is the only site i have this problem with so i thought the problem was on their end, except my problem with the other shortcut keys makes me suspect. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Shortcut Icons Disappear

My problem is similar to raynman's but on a desktop (hp with win 7 home premium), so it isn't related to closing a laptop. My games shortcut icons sometimes disappear, plus a shortcut to broadband internet connection. It doesn't happen except when booting up or waking up, but it doesn't happen often either. Just unpredictably. Only way to restore the missing icons is to recreate each one.

I've seen this behavior in previous windows versions back to 3. 1. By this time windows really ought to include a desktop-memorizing and restoring function, not just for icon positions but for the icons themselves, and not just for system icons.

Network Shortcut Disappeared

I'm a system administrator for a small-medium company. We are moving to windows 7, because i think it's faster and reliable than xp. But we have a little problem: all the client that are using a new windows seven pc , complain about the same little (but annoying) problem: some times (generally after reboot, but not ever) all "network shortcut" disappear from desktop without any reason.

With the word "network shortcut" i mean: link to remote folder (folder on a network file server), link to network computer, or link for my own connections (like vpn connection to my company). An yway only link to network resources are affected by this problem, [desktop icon, internal link, ore file icons, are not affected by this problem].
