Random System Hangs / Freezes

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure this one out. I am currently running windows 7 x64. At any given moment, the system will hang. Sometimes the system will go days without any issues, sometimes it will hang several times during one day. First the screen will freeze and all open programs become unresponsive, the mouse will continue to move around the screen as normal for about thirty seconds, but this time varies.

If i am watching a video or playing music, the audio will continue without interruption for several minutes, but this time will also vary. The caps lock, scroll lock, and num lock lights will continue to work also, meaning if i press any of the affor mentioned buttons, the light turns on/off like normal. The mouse, keyboard lights, and sound usually continue to work until i click the mouse buttons several times, at which point the system becomes entirely unresponsive.

My first instinct was driver issues. Noticing that the screen froze first, i assumed that the vpu was crashing and failing to recover. After several driver updates and much online research to this end, nothing had changed. I then turned my attention to drivers in general, updating all that i could, this again yielded no results. I then updated my bios and had no luck. Assuming it was not a driver issue, i examined my hardware. I thoroughly tested my hard drives, ram, and monitored loads and temperature on the cpu, vpu, and chipset.

I could not see any trends, the freezes appear to be at complete random. I do have an early amd phenom 9600 with the tlb erratum. I have tried enabling and disabling the patch in the bios
With no change. At this point i do not know what else to check. This is my most powerful pc at the moment, and i have reverted back to xp pro x86. I really like 7 over xp, but the instability in 7 makes it difficult to use for fear of data loss. Xp has no stability issues running on this same system. I have four other pc's which also have windows 7, none of them have had any issues. Some are 64-bit, some are 32-bit, all are stable.

My system specs are below: this is with the system at idle.

Motherboard: gigabyte ma790fx-ds5 motherboard - amd 790fx, socket am2+, atx, audio, pci express 2. 0, crossfirex ready, gigabit lan, s/pdif, usb 2. 0, firewire, serial ata, raid

Random Freezes With Win 7 64-bit

I use to run vista home premium x86 on a acer computer. This summer i downloaded windows 7 rc x86. A month ago i bought all new parts and since i could use 64-bit system now i installed a 64-bit windows 7. Then did the problem start. Every new and then the computer freezes, some days over 30 times. I thought it was hardware problem and tried a lot of hardware finders and nothing helped. I also installed windows 7 rc my mothers laptop (the same version i use to have that work fine) that used to run on vista home basic. But her computer didn't freeze it just got a black screen now and then.

The i started to suspect that it was because it was a beta version so when windows 7 were released i bought two of them a 32-bit and a 64-bit. But the problem didn't go away. It's still there and it's kind of frustrating and even more now when i’m trying to write a essay. I used windows upgrade advisor and it didn't see any problem with an upgrade to windows 7. What can i do?

Win 7 Hangs Up / Freezes Randomly

I just bought a dell studio 1749 with windows 7 64 bit. Randomly a program will lock up. After about 30 seconds or so the program will say it is not responding. If i right click on the program the whole program will turn a transparent white. This happens with many programs including ie, firefox, and windows explorer. I contacted dell and they did some simple maintenance but that didn't fix anything. I re-installed windows 2 times but it still didn't fix the problem. After all of this dell sent a technician to swap out hard drives. That still didn't fix the problem. It seems that if i have the battery plan on performance it helps but doesn't solve the problem.

Hangs / Freezes While Transferring Files From Sata Drive To Raid 0

Windows 7 hangs/freezes while transferring files from my e drive (sata) to my c drive (raid 0 sata). Every time i try to move a large group of files, the copy process will lock up about 40 seconds in. I can move smaller groups of files, liek 100-200mb or less and everything works fine, but if i try to move a gigabyte or more, the system will freeze.

Motherboard: asus p5n-d 750i
Cpu: q6600
Os: windows 7 64bit
Ram: 8 gig's ddr2 800

Random System Shutdowns Without Any Warning Or Error Code

While playing world of warcraft i am experiencing apparently "random" system shutdowns without any warning or error code. This generally happens in areas where there is high activity and probably high demand on my graphics card.

I am running vista 64 bit.
Amd athlon (64) dual core 5200+
4 gb of ram
Nvidia geforce 9500 gt 1gb graphics card

This has only started since latest "patch" from blizzard so am wondering if it is a compatibility problem or graphics card problem.

Programs Not Responding, System Hangs

Windows 7 x64 random errors, including programs not responding, system hangs, system not shutting down, programs not starting. I'm so frustrated right now regarding all these issues. I had installed win7 64bit clean install a few months ago and everything worked fine till a few days ago, then all of a sudden my programs stooped responding, didn't start, couldn't shut down different programs, including media player, and even wouldn't shut down with ctrl+alt+del.

I got so frustrated that i reformatted my drives and did a clean install od win7 again (multiple times over the last 2 days now). The installation seems to go fine and i install my programs (office, alcohol 120, winrar, firefox, drivers for graphics and sound), and windows update, and hook up my external drives, speakers and printer. After that windows starts acting up, programs will open but not respond, won't shut down, explorer will crash and not restart, if i try to shut down the non-responsive programs (including my computer), they will not shut down and instead explorer will shut down.

My computer will open but take forever to load and right clicking anything will cause the system to hang. I have to restart in order to make anything shut down, and on shutdown, the system just hangs on the shutdown screen, forcing me to shutdown with the power button. I've tried system restore to restore to before i installed any programmes, but the problem persists. It gets so bad that i am unable to do anything at all (surprisingly the browser always works), and i've done a clean install 5-6 times already with the same problems.

System Restore Hangs - Updates Never Complete

System restore hangs forever, windows updates never complete & installation of new programs freeze. After a scheduled windows vista update, automatic updates stopped working, among several other things: in manual mode, the progress bar freezes at 0% of the first update and never shows progress.

When i try to shutdown the pc (hp pavilion s3241la slimline desktop), the same story: automatic updates begin the installation, but with no progress, and at the end, i have to power off the pc the hard way.

In control panel->system->system protection i can't see any system restore points, the system keeps "searching" forever for those points but never displays any, and the hdd shows no activity; the "system restore. " Console isn't available too, it's button is greyed out.

Any program i try to install or upgrade never completes, installations just hang. How can i solve this?, The system is a production unit & it's not easy to stop all activities to perform a re-installation from scratch.

System Freezes After Hibernate

I have a toshiba t135-s1310 laptop running windows 7 64-bit, 4gb ram.computer restarts quickly with no issues. However, when waking up from hibernate mode, the computer freezes and must be turned off manually. This only happens in hibernate, not sleep/standby. All drivers are updated, bios updated, virus scan done; i can't seem to find any issues. I never had any problems up until last week: i was in the middle of a word document, and the computer suddenly froze and restarted itself. Since that point, the hibernate function doesn't work properly. Any ideas?

System Freezes During Startup

After behaving normally for two weeks or more, my computer (using retail copy of win 7 professional 32 bit system) will not start up.

It freezes during the "microsoft starting" phase. The 4-color logo never gets formed up and that's it. I have tried all or most of the config and reboot options but nothing happens i always get stuck at the same place. When i use the option that shows the 32 bit system drivers getting loaded it never gets past . Disk.sys or the next one . Snp.sys. And that screen ends with "please wait".

There were some downloads/updates installed on last good day (thursday 1/21/2010). I might have downloaded firefox that day as well. One more thing i set up a (wireless) network but i only have one win 7 machine so i don't think it will do anything for me.

Upon the next start-up two days later - i experienced this trouble that will not go away. I do not have a boot-up disk but when i try to start with the original dvd media the same thing happens - it appears to read the disk then the "microsoft starting" begins and ends just as already described.

System Freezes During Memory Diagnostic

Built system 5 months ago. Worked fine for 4 months. There were no changes to hardware or software.computer freezes at all points of operation randomly. Will not complete windows memory diagnostic, will freeze anywhere from 5% to 20% completion of pass 1 of a 2 pass test. Tried all settings: basic, standard, extended, cash on cash off it didn't matter.

Please help, my components have warranties, is one of them bad. It wont complete any diagnostic without freeze. Is there any other way to identify the bad component or is it a setting that got screwed. I don't monkey with bios settings and generally haven't had any problems. This is my 3rd build and the only one i have had problems with. Running win7 x64.

Oh almost forgot this tidbit. Occasionally it wont reboot after freeze. I have even had to reinstall the cpu to get it to restart. Taking all proper precaution as far as not reusing the same paste properly cleaned etc.

Remote Desktop Freezes System

Windows 7(64 bit) pro.connect to the pc via remote desktop, and conduct a session. When the session is over, terminate the session. Then go back to the windows 7 machine and try to log in. The pc takes the password and looks like it wants to bring up the desktop, but freezes on the screen. The mouse cursor isn't visible. 3 fingered salute doesn't do anything. The only thing that works is a reset or power down. It doesn't matter if the client is win xp pro or win 7(64 bit).

The machine has 6 gb of memory. Ati radeon 4650 graphincs card, asus p7p55d motherboard. I have installed the latest driver for the graphics card. Nothing in the event viewer that looks like it is related.

Any ideas?

I tried changing the product key, in case i entered it in wrong during install and, re-activated windows. I have no idea why this is happening on this system but, i also have windows 7 retail versions running on 2 desktops without this issue. Ny ideas would be fantastic.

Win 7 Random Freezing

I have an acer aspire 6930 with intel core 2 duo (t6400 @ 2. 00 ghz), 4. 00 gb of ram, and win 7 32 bit operating system. Originally had vista on it but upgraded in jan to 7. I am also running avg antivirus on here. It was running fine until around the first of march. Then it started freezing up and you have to do a hard restart to get out of it.

It normally happens when i'm using internet explorer 8 but once it froze up a few minutes after i started it (i had no programs opened at that time). This is getting really annoying, i've tried everything i can think of and a bunch of the stuff in the forum. I play games on facebook but that's the only kind of games.

Win7 Random Shutdown

I am using win 7 ultimate 32 bit, upgraded over vista home premium 32 bit. My laptop is randomly shutting down, it never done it while i had vista installed. It is not going in to sleep mode or anything similar, as some have suggested, it completely shuts down with no warning but can be booted up straight away. The only time i can make it happen for sure is when i run the windows experience index, it gets near to the end and then shuts down. I used to be able to run the wei before so i don't know why it does it now.

Any ideas as this is really annoying me?

Pc Random Sound Failure

I bought a brand new intel core i7 860 2. 8ghz , 4gb ddr3 ram, intel whitesburg lga1156 p55, and windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Ever since i got it, the sound randomly disappears, and the only way to get the sound back is to restart the pc. Doesn't matter what im doing, be it skype, playing music, watching movies. Etc. It is also at different times, like sometimes it can take 1 minute to disappear, sometimes 2hrs. The pc has integrated sound, so no separate sound card. This had become beyond irritating i work in i. T, and have tried plenty, but nothing helps. Sound continues to randomly go off.

Random Corrupt Login Error

Occasionally and more frequently, login will not work properly. I am a genuine 64-bit windows 7 user, and i love the system, but unfortunately i have been running into a recurring problem. I'm sorry that this does not have any specific error messages (i didn't think ahead, and it's not happening now), but these are the symptoms:

- On boot, i get to the login screen just fine, i enter my credentials.

- It says welcome, and then something like "loading your desktop".

- It says something about a corrupted login, then puts me into either:

- A) some weird half-breed of windows 95 and 7, where icons still resemble windows 7, but the taskbar and explorers are grey

- B) this last time, i was logged into a temporary account

- Edit: when i shut down, there is some weird audio feedback

- From then on, if try to log in, an error message about login or profile data not found.

- I usually just restore to an earlier image, and it will work fine.

Unfortunately, this has become more frequent, and i'm wondering what is the culprit. If it is impossible to grasp the situation without further information, i will try to get it. Past searches suggested it was something about the registry.

Random Bsods - Event 41, Task 63

I am experiencing intermittent bsod crashes. The crashes do not correspond to high levels of activity, high operating temperatures or any other pattern that i can perceive. If anything, they occur most frequently shortly (seconds) after bootup or while the system is idle. The system is not overclocked. I have the latest bios available from msi and the latest optical drive, ethernet, gpu, and audio drivers.

(A side note on the ethernet driver. The latest version available from realtek's website is 7. 11. 1127. 2009.microsoft update recommended an update to the driver which i installed on feb. 6. This driver version was 7. 12. 128. 2009. I have experienced bsods with both versions of the driver. Currently i'm running realtek's latest version as i'm unclear how microsoft could have a more up-to-date version than the manufacturer. )

I have already tested the ram using memtest86. I've run in excess of 16 passes without returning any errors. I've also tested the hard drive using the manufacturer's diagnostic utility and chkdsk /r /f. Hard drive checks out fine. I've stress tested the system using prime95 and seti@home and the system has not shown any tendency to crash during stress testing. I've also run system file checker. It does not return any errors.

I've posted the minidump files here: http://expedientweb.com/bsod-dump.zip

I've posted the event logs here: http://expedientweb.com/event_log.zip

The critical events (which i assume are the bsod events) all run along these lines:

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Random Bsod After Upgrading To Win7

I recently upgraded from windows vista home premium to windows 7 pro and have had some problems with random bsod's. I originally installed windows 7 over windows vista and after about 48 hours i would have a bsod with them happening at random time after that point. I thought that it have have been something left behind by the vista install causing the problem, so i re-installed choosing to format the hard drive so that i would have a "clean" install. 48 hours later, bsod with a second one happening less than two hours later.

The problem has not happened while i have been using the computer, just when the computer is unused and in power saver mode (i use the high performance setting offered in windows 7 only i do not power down that hard drives, just the monitor). I thought the problem may have been caused by the motherboard(i am still not sure on this score but. ) So i went to the manufactures website, downloaded and installed the latest bios that was suppose to included windows 7. That was between the original 48 hour bsod and the second today.

I am running and asus m4a78 plus motherboard with an amd phenom 9500 processor and 4 gb ram. The only drivers that i have installed, other than the drivers supplied by the os for devices are for my video card (ati radeon 5750) and printer (hp deskjet d1660) both of which came from the manufactures websites stating that they where for windows 7(i know, can't always trust them). As i have stated, the system has not bsoded on me during use, just when the sytem is unused so it has not been a major issue to this point, but i would like to try to correct the issue before it becomes a major issue.

Random Bsod, Error 0x0000001e

I keep getting the bsod on my pc. It was confined to skyrim only at the start but is now random and not always when i am playing games. The last error was when my wife was on skype. I have updated the graphic card drivers and even tried replacing the monitor as i had an error message about recalibrating the screen. As the monitor was pre windows 7 i blamed that and replaced it. It didn't work.

Random Bsods With Win 7 Professional 64-bit

I've been recently experiencing random computer lock ups and bsod's after fresh installing windows 7 professional 64-bit system. In addition, i did the fresh install twice, just to see if it was a bad install. I did not have any problems, while running the same setup under windows xp professional.

All my drivers have been updated to the most current one, either from windows update, or directly from the product manufacturer's website.

Random Bsod Crashes Due To Driver_power_state_failure

Random bsod crashes due to driver_power_state_failure when pc left alone or in sleep. I have a dell studio xps8000, core i7-860, 8gb ram, nvidia gt220, win7 home premium 64-bit oem which, more or less since new, randomly crashes about once a week if i leave it alone and powered up for several hours or put in standby first. When this happens the pc is either fully shut down (& i then boot selecting 'boot windows normally' option) or has rebooted to login screen automatically.

According to recovery boot it is a bsod, and each minidump file looks like nearly identical to this, parameter 1 always 0x00000003:

Random Screen Blackouts When Using Dual Monitors

Recently got dell inspiron 580 with nvidia geforce 310 graphics card. When i hook up dell monitor (1600x900) to vga output, no problems. When i hook up second monitor (1280x1024) to dvi port using dvi-vga adapter, i get randomly occurring black screens, especially after playing a few minutes of flash video on a web page. Once the screens are black, the only thing i can do is force power-off and reboot.

Where do i start to diagnose what is happening? All i can find is the event viewer, which doesn't have any critical or error events except that an unexpected reboot occurred. Is there some way i can start logging or run drivers in debug, anything like that? I'd like to get some more information other than "the screens are black", because right now i don't know who i should be talking to about this problem; dell, microsoft, or nvidia.

Random No Boot And Noises From Hard Drive

Last week my mobo was broken, and i must do a complete new installation (so everything) with my win7.
Yesterday i recognize that my actual hard-disc starts to make problem ( not starting while booting, sometimes hanging with unusual noises) which options i would have to do a repair, without to have a full new installation, i am tired of this. Is there someone out here, who can explain what to do, to a user, not an expert?

Desktop Icons Pixelated With Random Colors

Suddenly from one day to the other a few of my desktop icons look strange. The interesting thing is that some of the icons (like "my computer") are still fine, while others "foto's", "music", "documents" are affected.

The icons appear to have a square layer of random pixels over them. I've tried to find the issue on the net, but don't seem to find an answer. I'm running windows 7 (with all recent updates), nvidia 8800 gt (driver version 8. 15. 11. 8627)

Random Spike / Lag Online Game

I experience random lag spike when playing online game (rf online), i'm very sure this is not fps lag because my notebook can play gtaiv smoothly and this online game is kind a very old game (2001). I never get this problem when playing with xp. Some sites suggesting to turn off the multimedia scheduler, or disable auto-config on my wireless network connection, also did change the 'network performance throttling' on registry to be ffffffff. But none of them solve the problem. Last thing i did is reinstalling windows 7 and just put the necessary driver on it just for running the game, still the resource monitor displaying lag-spike on network grap.

Random Peices Of Pictures In Live Gallery

I just transferred back to pc from mac and am using my old ipod video as an external disk to transfer music and photos. All of my photos are now in my new computer, but in the windows live photo gallery, it also displays small random pieces of my photos-for example-part of someone's face or the scene. I have the whole photo also, but i don't understand why little pieces of them are here and there all of the gallery. No clue how they got there or how to get rid of them. Does anyone know how to fix this? Do i just have to go through all of them and delete manually the distorted pieces?

Win 7 Pro 64-bit - Random Freeze

I used windows 7 rc 32 bit before this, it worked like a charm. Now, i installed windows 7 pro 64 bit, it works for a couple of weeks smoothly.

Today, i did a few things:

1) installed thunderbird
2) installed a huawei e160g wireless broadband modem
3) changed my dns to 8. 8. 8. 8 and 8. 8. 4. 4
It froze a few times already, and this is what i recall:
1) firefox was open in all cases
2) the modem was being used in all cases
3) thunderbird was uninstalled, still happening.
However, it cant be firefox, i have been using it for weeks.

I just tried uninstalling the modem, smooth so far, but i cant be sure yet. I want to ask: has anyone else had problems with modems or their drivers/programs?

Random Shut Down / Computer Randomly Shutting Down

I have a sony vaio vgn-cs190j. I upgraded to windows 7 professional 64bit about 4 months ago and am now having issues with my computer randomly shutting down. It will instantly freeze up for like a second and just shut off to immediate power off. There is no bsod or a restart. It just instantly shuts down. It has happened while doing flash applets, surfing the web, and playing games on my computer. It even happened one time while i was on microsoft word. There is also the occasional occurrence where the computer will shut down immediately shutdown before or during start up.
Does anyone know how to fix this or if there is a known problem of this happening?

Random Shut Down In Sleep & Hibernate Modes

I recently installed windows 7 professional on my hp laptop and i have the following problem: when i enter the computer into "sleep" or "hibernate" mode, after a certain period of time (usually a few hours), the computer will automatically wake up and the screen will go blue for a split second before the computer shuts down completely. When i turn the computer on again, it says that it has been shut down improperly and prompts me whether or not i would like to boot normally or in safe mode. When i was using windows xp, i had no problem leaving the computer in sleep mode for days at a time. Does anyone know why i might be having this problem with windows 7?

Random Bsod, All Updated Drivers, Firmware And Bios

Before thursday and the release of windows 7 x64 i was running xp pro x64, i did a clean install of win 7 home premium x64 and was faced with random bsod every hour or so. I updated all of my drivers, bios, hardware, everything i could think of and it still continued to happen. I gave up on win7 x64 figuring it was a driver issue, so now i am back on xp pro x64 and i am still having the random bsod pretty frequently.
