Cannot Backup To Dvd

I have a compaq presario cq6-215dx notebook pc on which i have clean installed windows 7. (Originally the system came with vista installed). I have repeatedly attempted to back up my system with no success. Each time i"ll get through a disc or two and then i get the "backup did not complete successfully" and event viewer registers the following error- "the device, devicecdrom0, has a bad block. ". 1342 times in the last 24 hrs? This can't be the dvds. I am using sony dvd+rw, 1-4x discs. I've gone through numerous discs and refuse to keep wasting discs.could tis be a controller error. Dvd drive problem. Or a problem with the backup program.

Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Dell Datasafe Local Backup Vs Windows Backup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows 7. One of the first things i did was configure all of my back-upsettings / schedule in windows. I used the recommended windows default settings in regards to what data is being backed up and set my back-up location to an attached external wd drive. All seems to be working fine. That said this machine also has dell factory installed back up software (dell datasafe local back-up) that does it's thing and backs up data to a partition on the "c" drive. My question is if i've set up windows to back up my data to an external drive do i even need the dell datasafe local back up program at all? The concern is this program is using space on my c drive and if the c drive were to crash having the back up info on it seems kind of pointless to me anyway.

Dvd Maker Cannot Create The Dvd

I'm getting this like everyone else on a windows 7 64 bit. The dvd burner is turned on, working, etc. I have 251 gb of free space. The problem is that this error message is so worthless, i.e. No real specifics like "out of space" , "codec error", "invalid input file", "hey, i†just don't like you" †. There is nothing to work with. The input is a home movie avi which plays just fine in windows media center. The "just†die for no†apparent reason"†point seems to be 38% in windows media center and 17% in windows dvd maker and the blank disk is kicked out.

If nothing else microsoft ought to build a fix that at least dumps some useful error messages about the failed process so there's a direction to take. At least under dvd maker the status was "encoding" and it dies during that. Windows media center tells you nothing, but the vague error. Oh, yes i did try again after a fresh re-boot and am running nothing else. Same problem.

Win 7 Backup

I have several questions in regards to backing up data & system image from a a new windows 7 laptop to an external hard drive.

First, after loading my data files and applications to the new machine, i used the control panel>system and security>backup route to backup everything to an external hard drive. This backup failed due to the fact that i had created a new library called my work that i had created for containing my professional files (i.e. Autocad drawings, word documents). Once i moved my professional files to one of the factory libraries, and deleted the new library folder i had created, the backup process succeeded. Why is this, and what is the point of being able to create a new library if it causes the backup process to fail?

Second, when attempting to perform a subsequent backup a week later, this backup failed because the external hard drive i was backing up to apparently was not big enough. However, i was backing up approximately 140 gb of used space from the computer's 450 gb internal hard drive to an external 300 gb hard drive that had received the previous successful (and failed) backups from the week before, also of about the same size transfers. Is the backup process not incremental, or due i have to purge the external hard drive before each backup to create the space for a new backup?

Must i delete previous windows 7 backup from my external hard drive to create space for new back, or will new backup write over previous backup?

Microsoft Backup

I have set my computer to back up weekly using the automatic backup system on the computer but for some reason it will not backup the videos - comes up 'xxxxxx†path not found'. If i take the videos out of the library the back up works perfectly and i then back the videos up manually but i am curious as to why i cannot back them up using the automated system - would it be because the file sizes are too large?

Backup Is Slow

I have been backing up my files for almost 5 hours now! It's on its second dvd now and is at 61%. The percentage does move but very slowly! Why is it taking so long? Is there a problem or something, and if there is how do i fix it? Thanks everyone!Edit: i just got the following message when it was 63% complete: "windows backup found errors on the media while saving a backup on it and cannot use it for additional backups" then it asked me to put in another dvd, which i did.

Now it has continued backing up and is at 63% still. Ok, so how did it find errors on the dvd, when it was a brand new dvd? So should i still keep that dvd? I have been having issues with windows backup for the past 2-3 months and its really annoying!

Backup So Slow

I have a brand new dell pc (intel i7 processor) running windows 7 home premium 64-bit. (Oem)
I have about 350gb of data that i have transfered onto the new pc. I have tried running windows 7 backup to two different external drives. It seems to take†24 or more hours to run a backup with windows 7.

On my old pc with vista it took 3-4 hours to backup the same data to the same drives
I can drag and copy files to a portable drive†in about 3 hours

Here is what i did:
External drive shows 99% free space.
Ran error check on both pc and external drive.
Used settings for automatic fix file system error as well as attempt recover of bad sector.

Pc is running normally.
Power state is normal.
No other programs running.
Logged in as administrator† (i have no other uses. Just me as administrator)
Opened windows 7 backup.
Select "let me choose" what to back up.
Chose local disk "c" and "include a system image" box
Executed backup

This process should take a few hours, not a day.

What else can i try to speed up the windows 7 backup process?

Cannot Get Backup To Work

Just set up a new windows 7 64 bit system. When i try to run "set up backup" i get a window that says "starting windows backup - please wait while windows backup starts, " but nothing ever happens. Just hangs on that. If i x out, it changes to "canceling" and hangs on that. When i ultimately go to task manager to end it, it says not responding.

I just want to set up an automatic backup to an external drive nightly, but i can't seem to get to step one. Anyone else having this issue?

I do have another backup program installed - iomega automatic backup pro. I had that on my old xp system, and it transferred when i transferred to the new windows 7 system. The problem is that it doesn't work with windows 7 (which is why i am trying to use windows backup. ) I tried to uninstall it, but a window opens that says "preparing to uninstall, " and it just hangs at that - also not responding. I guess since the program doesn't work with windows 7, neither does the uninstall -
Or maybe it can't find the uninstall log. Is there a way to locate the actual executable that will uninstall iomega automatic backup pro? Or some other way to uninstall it?

Btw, i tried clean boot and had the same problem even with all startup items and services disabled (other than microsoft services and anti virus - i could not disable antivirus). Also tried the system check and found no problems.

More info: i booted in diagnostic mode and tried to uninstall. After activating windows installer, i tried to uninstall automatic backup pro. Instead of hanging, i got "the install script engine on this machine is older than the version required to run this setup. If available, please install the latest version of isscript. Msi. " So i think the isscript. Msi file is probably newer than that required, not older, but either way†the installer doesn't recognize it. Is there a way to uninstall with xp scripts?

Backup And Restore

I just upgraded to windows 7 from vista. I had backed up my program files and data on dvd's prior to upgrading to windows 7. Now i want to restore them in windows 7, but i am unclear of the location of where i should be restoring them. If i pick the original location, it tells me that the file already exists in that location, and do i want to replace, copy or keep both copies; if i choose a different location, i have no idea where they should go. Do i make a new folder, or just have them restored in c drive. I am not sure how to proceed. Can anyone explain this for me please?

Backup Failed

I have three external drives, that were backed up each night on a vista machine by whs. I purchased a new machine, with win 7, and moved the drives to the new machine. I then installed the connector for whs, and configured the back up. Each night the back up backs up the hard drive on the new machine, but fails on the external drives. I moved them back to the old machine and they back up fine. When i move them back to the win7 machine, the internal harddrive backs up, but the external drives will not anymore. Does whs put a file to connect the drives to certain machine or something? How do i get the drives to back up some the new machine?

I also moved an internal drive from the old machine to and it does the same thing.

Backup Onto A Second External Drive

I want a second backup on a second external drive (call it "drive2"), so i'd like to either #1) copy every now and again drive1's daily backup file to drive2, or, #2) perform an occasional separate backup directly onto drive2. I'm confused about issues with both approaches. Original title: i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches. With approach i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches.

#1, windows doesn't permit me to just drag the backup file icon from drive1 to drive2; instead, i have to open the file and then copy itsunderlyingbackup set files, at the end of which iím always asked about merging a folder (see graphic at† do i answer yes or no? (This merge question comes up even when copying just a single backup set file. ) And, can i drag over to drive2 just the most recent backup set file, or does the backup program update older backup set files when it runs, meaning that i would have to copyeverybackup set file anytime i copy between drive1 and drive2?†

With approach #2, i can change settings within the backup program and choose drive2 as the destination, but does that affect theexistingbackup set (which i want to continue using) by creating an incremental backup file in the new destination, or does the backup program interpret a new destination as "create a totally new backup file from scratch on that new destination"? (With xp's ntbackup, you could create different "jobs" and different . Bkf files; does windows 7 backup offer a similar choice?)
