System Restore Hangs - Updates Never Complete

System restore hangs forever, windows updates never complete & installation of new programs freeze. After a scheduled windows vista update, automatic updates stopped working, among several other things: in manual mode, the progress bar freezes at 0% of the first update and never shows progress.

When i try to shutdown the pc (hp pavilion s3241la slimline desktop), the same story: automatic updates begin the installation, but with no progress, and at the end, i have to power off the pc the hard way.

In control panel->system->system protection i can't see any system restore points, the system keeps "searching" forever for those points but never displays any, and the hdd shows no activity; the "system restore. " Console isn't available too, it's button is greyed out.

Any program i try to install or upgrade never completes, installations just hang. How can i solve this?, The system is a production unit & it's not easy to stop all activities to perform a re-installation from scratch.

Cannot Complete System Restore

When doing a system restore i get the message that system restore did not complete and no files were changed. I'm running windows 7 on a 64bit computer. I have tried doing a restore from safe mode, from a dos prompt and i have uninstalled my virus protection and firewall and still no luck. My system is operating properly in all respects. I was running some media server software named playon and was having some issues so their tech support told me to change some networking options. I had to uninstall that software and now it will not let me reinstall so i am trying to do a system restore to a point before i changed the network settings.

System Restore And Updates

I have been trying to uninstall windows liveone care safety scanner because i mistakenly downloaded it and it does not work for windows 7 64 bit computers. It would not uninstall. So i tried restoring my computer to an earlier time. Two questions: the liveone safety scanner is still there and i still can not uninstall it. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?

The restore point was before the latest windows updates. Would the updates have been deleted by the system restore? I checked to see if i have the latest updates and i do, but i don't understand how that is possible. Any explanation?

System Restore And Security Updates

Did system restore to a march 22, 2010, as windows explorer had become deadly slow and i was unable to determine why. Seems fine now.

My question is: do i need to download and install again the security updates for windows xp (professional sp3) released since the system restore date? Since the sys restore, the add/remove progams list doesn't list any of the updates done since feb 10 except hotfix -kb979306 and security update - kb975561) although the microsoft windows update service online lists 20 or more that were previously downloaded. I'd appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this for me.

Automatic Updates Stopped System Restore From Working

On 1/13/2010 after turning on my dell xps 410 with vista home premium operating system i received a notice the the ms (microsoft)automatic update requested to download kb972270, kb977839, kb905866, and kb890830. I agreed. The download and installation proceeded without any issues. I did not receive a notice the computer needed to be rebooted. After completing my work i shut the computer down without any issues. On 16 jan 2010 i turned the computer back on and the boot up could not get past the ms timing bar that appears at the bottom of the screen. As previously when this happens i would do a hard restart and a screen would appear stating that my computer did not start properly and that ms repair would start in 30 seconds to repair the problem if not instructed otherwise. I let it proceed assuming it was one of the four above updates that was causing the problem. However. This time when the clock ran down to start the display blanked and flashed a few times and the same restart window appeared with the 30 seconds clock once again counting down; i was in an endless loop.

I attempted a number of restarts without success. I referred to the computer owner's manual which relayed that my final solution would probably be to use the ms or dell system restore disk which would wipe the hard drive. I inserted the ms vista system restore disk and instructed the computer to reboot from the cd/dvd drive. ( I think it was the f11 or f12 key that you need to press within the first few second of system boot-up; check your owners manual. ) Happily, i found an option "repair system" which i selected and the "restore" window appeared. I ran restore and it turned the system back to 1/13/2010 when i last successfully logged on. My computer is now back up and running. However, i continue to receive notices to download these four updates; but i am not sure which one is producing the problem.

Programs Not Responding, System Hangs

Windows 7 x64 random errors, including programs not responding, system hangs, system not shutting down, programs not starting. I'm so frustrated right now regarding all these issues. I had installed win7 64bit clean install a few months ago and everything worked fine till a few days ago, then all of a sudden my programs stooped responding, didn't start, couldn't shut down different programs, including media player, and even wouldn't shut down with ctrl+alt+del.

I got so frustrated that i reformatted my drives and did a clean install od win7 again (multiple times over the last 2 days now). The installation seems to go fine and i install my programs (office, alcohol 120, winrar, firefox, drivers for graphics and sound), and windows update, and hook up my external drives, speakers and printer. After that windows starts acting up, programs will open but not respond, won't shut down, explorer will crash and not restart, if i try to shut down the non-responsive programs (including my computer), they will not shut down and instead explorer will shut down.

My computer will open but take forever to load and right clicking anything will cause the system to hang. I have to restart in order to make anything shut down, and on shutdown, the system just hangs on the shutdown screen, forcing me to shutdown with the power button. I've tried system restore to restore to before i installed any programmes, but the problem persists. It gets so bad that i am unable to do anything at all (surprisingly the browser always works), and i've done a clean install 5-6 times already with the same problems.

Random System Hangs / Freezes

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure this one out. I am currently running windows 7 x64. At any given moment, the system will hang. Sometimes the system will go days without any issues, sometimes it will hang several times during one day. First the screen will freeze and all open programs become unresponsive, the mouse will continue to move around the screen as normal for about thirty seconds, but this time varies.

If i am watching a video or playing music, the audio will continue without interruption for several minutes, but this time will also vary. The caps lock, scroll lock, and num lock lights will continue to work also, meaning if i press any of the affor mentioned buttons, the light turns on/off like normal. The mouse, keyboard lights, and sound usually continue to work until i click the mouse buttons several times, at which point the system becomes entirely unresponsive.

My first instinct was driver issues. Noticing that the screen froze first, i assumed that the vpu was crashing and failing to recover. After several driver updates and much online research to this end, nothing had changed. I then turned my attention to drivers in general, updating all that i could, this again yielded no results. I then updated my bios and had no luck. Assuming it was not a driver issue, i examined my hardware. I thoroughly tested my hard drives, ram, and monitored loads and temperature on the cpu, vpu, and chipset.

I could not see any trends, the freezes appear to be at complete random. I do have an early amd phenom 9600 with the tlb erratum. I have tried enabling and disabling the patch in the bios
With no change. At this point i do not know what else to check. This is my most powerful pc at the moment, and i have reverted back to xp pro x86. I really like 7 over xp, but the instability in 7 makes it difficult to use for fear of data loss. Xp has no stability issues running on this same system. I have four other pc's which also have windows 7, none of them have had any issues. Some are 64-bit, some are 32-bit, all are stable.

My system specs are below: this is with the system at idle.

Motherboard: gigabyte ma790fx-ds5 motherboard - amd 790fx, socket am2+, atx, audio, pci express 2. 0, crossfirex ready, gigabit lan, s/pdif, usb 2. 0, firewire, serial ata, raid

System Restore

My current pc came with vista preloaded. I did not receive a cd disk with it. Rather the manufacture had set up a recovery partition for me to restore the system. In addition, vista also gave me the option to make recovery disks which i did. If i upgrade to windows 7 and do a clean install will it give me that same one time option to create the recovery disk for my computer?

Also, when i do install windows 7 will it give me the option to wipe my whole hard drive including the old recovery partition and allow me to create a new recovery partition? I realize that it is the manufacturer that has set up the recovery partition, and i have never had to do it for myself before, so i was wondering if that is some kind of option with windows 7 or if i am on my own to create a new one?

Need To Restore System

I just finished restoring my system for the 10th time in the three months that i have owned this new windows 7 computer. For at least 10 times when i have been advised that the windows 7 operating system has been updated i am not able to get on the internet with the use of internet explorer. After restoring the system to a time before the most recent update i am once again able to get on the internet. Does anyone have any idea on how to stop the need for restoration after an update?

Why No System Restore?

A registry defragmentor program caused my sysem to not be able to boot. The system could not repair itself either. I also tried last known good configuration without results. I tried to do a system restore and had a number of restore points to choose from, but every one i chose gave me an exclamation mark and i could not put a check mark in the c windows box.

I was able to get my system back using another backup routine (image) i was using, but this backup was 3. 5 weeks old and i had 3 restore points for 3 days ago. So what might i do to get this working  in case a similar event happens and my system is unrepairable via the repair tool presented. Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

System Restore Does Not Work

I recently had big problems with my dell inspiron 530 and it would not reboot. I finally got to the part of the safe mode where you can do system restore. I tried the 1st restore point and thought everything would work but all of a sudden i get a message that says system restore did not complete because of an error. I tried 2 more restore points and got the same message. Some way the system recovered and booted up the normal way when i started it normally. I would like to know why system restore would not work. Does the antivirus program need to be off or uninstalled? Does windows defender have something to do with this?

Restore From System Image

I have a hard disk with two partitions, one for my windows 7 installation and one for my media files. I want to make a system image of my windows partition only using the backup and restore feature in windows 7 (a backup of the files on the media partition would require more space than i currently have).

If i create a system image of the windows partition only and use it to restore to the the same hard disk that windows is currently installed on (which also contains a partition with my media files), will i lose the files on the media partition?

It wont let me do a system restore due to the common error below. "System restore could not access a file" and the event viewer shows "an unspecified error occurred during system restore. Additional information: 0x80070005"i notice that norton commonly causes these problems, and i may have a similar issue?I have uac turned off, what i do have is avast free antivirus, and ive tried turning it off before doing a system restore, but as soon as the pc boots avast is back on again, which may prevent restore from doing its job. Has anyone heard of avast buggering up system restore?

Restore System Administration

Also, my user account profile says i am the system administrator. However, ever since i upgraded to windows 7, i have been blocked from changing anything that requires a system administrator account. This is particularly true when i try to create a restore point, which i cannot do because it does not recognize that i have administrator rights.

When i bring up the system window and select system protection, it says that system restore is disabled by your system administrator. Except i am supposed to be the system administrator.configuration and system restore point creation is also disabled by my system administrator.

Anyone have any ideas? Also, how do i move an ntsf partition?

System Restore Problem

I'm running windows 7 home premium. Up till recently, as far as i know, i've been able to restore from restore points but recently i had problems installing a program and was unable to uninstall it. I tried system restore. On reboot i got a message "system restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point". I've tried other restore points but still get the same message. You can see the actual message window here

http://s8. Photobucket.com/albums/a28/rachelr-uk/?Action=view¤t=systemrestorefailure.jpg .

I've run the system file checker with no problems found and checked that volume shadow copy is running and starts automatically. I've also tried switching sr off and then on but it makes no difference.

Black Screen After System Restore

I have a samsung n150 its running windows 7 starter and i system restored it. The computer goes through the restore process and seems fine, i put in my password and it goes black, the only thing i can see is the mouse. I can go into safemode and such. I went into safemode with command prompt and tried to system restore again but to find that nothing changed. This netbook doesn't have a disc drive so i don't know what i can do.

All the safe-modes and everything boot a black screen with the mouse visible. When i load windows normally i can pull up task manager and thats visible, and from there i can pull up the internet and everything but the desktop doesn't show up nor does it respond when i click randomly on the black screen and there is not tool bar at the bottom with start and everything.

System Restore Has Been Turned Off By Administrator

System restore has been turned off by your system administrator. I thought my problem was a easy one but not so. I am logged in as administrator windows 7 ultimate, i went to restore my system files and turned them off by mistake, so that i thought was no problem, i did know that it deletes all system restore files, so off i go again to turn them back on and guess what, it says the administrator had to be informed as they turned them off, after trying many ways of doing this, i resorted to no protection on my uac, this did not help, tried a new uac that did not help either, so now i am on my hands and knees hoping that someone out there can help, after such a simple mistake which i was allowed to do because i was administrator, i have gone to not even being able to system restore back on without contacting my administrator!

Lost Office After System Restore

I recently won a computer from microsoft in their 50 pcs in 50 days drawing. It had windows 7 and microsoft office ultimate pre-installed on it. Then the computer crashed about a week ago and i just got it back working today. I had to do a complete system restore and in the process the office ultimate got wiped off the computer. But microsoft did not provide any installation media with which to re-install the office ultimate but they did provide a windows 7 dvd.

They also did not give me a key for the office ultimate but they did for the windows 7. Now i want the office back but have no way to install it again and also no way to unlock it even if i could install it. Is there any way to resolve this problem? Is there a way to get a key and installation media.

System Restore Error 0x80070005

The futuremark benchmark 3dmark vantage includes two installations. After the install, i found that futuremark's registration hurdles were not worth my effort. Instead of a simple uninstall i ran system restore and picked the restore point created by the 3dmark vantage installation [restore point 1]. Upon restart the system restore message box stated, "system restore did not complete successfully.system files and settings were not changed.

System restore could not access a file. Probably because an anti-virus app is running. Disable and retry. Unspecified error. (0x80070005) try again and choose a different restore point. "
Next i uninstalled the two futuremark installations without error. Then i tried sr using the same restore point getting the same error message. Then i tried sr using a convenient restore point from three days prior [restore point 2] but also got the same error message.

I do not use an anti-virus program. Next i disabled windows defender and uac, and restarted in safe mode. I tried sr using restore point 1 but i still get the same error message. It may be that system restore was never run before today (2010-04-11) on this mid-december 2009 installation of 32-bit win 7 hp upgrade. I will think on it. I have used sr by necessity several times in xp on this same desktop [asus m2n32 sli deluxe] and once on my wife's vista laptop.

My system and data partitions are backed up. But i really do not want to re-install the operating system. Win 7 hp upgrade is an annoying installation. Hopefully microsoft has advanced past the tiresome fix all "re-install windows" mantra. Please can anyone show me the procedures to allow system restore to change the registry and files?

System Restore Error 0x8000ffff

I’m trying to do a system restore in win 7 32 bit.

I keep getting the following from all the restore points i try.
"System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer’s system files and settings were no changed.

Details:

System restore failed to extract the file (c:) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x8000ffff)

You can try system restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see what is recovery?"

System Restore Points Problem

I'm having problems with system restore on my computer. I had a post about my earlier problem in a different forum on this website, my post was: "i'm using windows 7 ultimate, microsoft office 2007 and my printer is epson lx-300+. I had no trouble printing anything before until now, i can't get my printer to work. I thought it was a driver issue so i reinstalled it but still won't print.

I recently discovered that after i click the ok button to start printing, there at the devices & printers page, specifically at see what's printing page, the document for printing won't show up anymore, it always shows up there if i print something. "

"Strangely i discovered that, if my printer is not connected to the computer, the document shows up at the see what's printing page with the status as printing though my printer is off but as i turn on the printer the document for printing disappears and as i try to print again, it won't show up as long as the printer is on & connected. " I was about to try system restore to restore my settings to an earlier date but oddly enough i can't access any restore points, it says that there are no restore points available. I actually discovered my problem with system recovery a month ago, i had the enabled the "monitoring" option for system restore on my 2 drives both ntfs format.

I can manually make a restore point but whenever i restart my pc all restore points are gone. This happens over & over again. My system does make restore points when changes are made like when uninstalling programs but when i restart my system, like i said, all restore points are gone but the settings remained untouched like my drive can't store restore points, i did allocate 2 gb of disk space for it (i have a 40 gb drive partitioned to 30 & 8 gb. Have you encountered anything like this with windows 7 ultimate?

System Restore Point Failure

I have been unable to use the window 7 restore point function in the expected manner. Along with other participants in this forum, when i attempt to restore my system to an earlier state i received a message stating "system restore did not complete successfully". Error 0x8007005 is being reported.

On the basis of responses to similar inquiries on this forum i have unsuccessfully tried to roll back my system to an earlier restore point by:

. Disabling (but not uninstalling) my virus protection software.
. Performing a selective startup
. Booting in safe mode.

In safe mode i was unable to access (or even find) the system restore screen from the control panel or by using a desktop shortcut that is available after a normal boot. My attempts to use system restore in this instance are of a routine nature but i want to have a workable procedure available if a critical need arises. I would also like to use system restore for non-critical housekeeping as well. In this situation i do not see uninstalling/reinstalling my security software or booting into safe mode as viable options.

As system restore is a key system security function in windows 7, i would very much hope that a simple, robust solution to the reported problem is available. I am using window 7 ultimate on a dual boot system (along with windows xp).

Win 7 Not Booting - Unable To Do A System Restore

I installed the last windows updates last night, and this morning when i tried to boot up my computer, it worked, but it froze when i tried to run explorer so i had to do a forced shutdown. I then was unable to do a system restore, and now i'm getting the following message:windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. It goes on to ask me insert the windows disc (which i don't have), and goes on to say "an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data". What can i do to restore windows off of my hard-drive?

System Restore Error Code 0x80070005

Ok, running win7 64bit. Bought a new htc evo phone and was installing htcsync software to sync the phone. Power failure in middle of install. No trace of installed app in program files folder, not anything in unistall apps. When attempting to (re)install app, i get a installer error 1722. Follow instructions in attempts to repair that including running windows installer cleanup utility. Htc app does not appear in that application to clean up. Ok, so i figure i'll just restore to an earlier point. But when attempting to use system restore, i get the error code 0x80070005.

Found that within the forums, but mostly indicating to run software fix on norton's antivirus. I was running avira free anti-virus. Nothing on their website about the fix. So i uninstall avira to see if that would work. No go, same error when attempting to do a system restore. Tried booting in safe mode and obtained a message that i cannot access system restore in safe mode. So here i am, unable to install the application, unable to fix some problem within the win7 installer application, and unable to do a system restore.
